SPOTLIGHT THOMAS BAKER (1808 – 1864) March – May 2019 Thomas Baker was a Midlands landscape painter and watercolourist often known as “Baker of Leamington” or “Landscape Baker”. He painted landscapes throughout Warwickshire, the Midlands and the Welsh border regions and also produced depictions of the Lake District, Scotland and Ireland.

Inspired by his teacher, the artist Joseph Barber, Baker became famous for his idyllic, pastoral scenes, often including riverbanks and bridges. Less well known are his sketches of the local urban landscape. The collection at Leamington Spa Art gallery & Museum includes more than 60 artworks by Baker and this Spotlight exhibition will showcase a selection of these works.

SIMON LEWTY Innocence Speaks of Light in Ways, 2012, ink and acrylic on paper In 2018 we were successful in receiving funding from the ACE/V&A Purchase Grand Fund and The Friends of Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum (FLAG) to purchase Simon Lewty’s artwork Innocence Speaks of Light in Ways. Simon Lewty was born in 1941 in Sutton Coldfield; he is a highly regarded artist who has exhibited both nationally and internationally since 1968. Lewty moved to Leamington Spa, in 1950 with his family and he has lived here ever since. He has been hugely inspired by the local area, particularly Old Milverton. Lewty’s work takes the form of intricate drawings, manuscripts, images, graffiti and narrative fragments often inspired by the significance of dream work and imagined creatures which take the form of a surrealist model. Innocence Speaks of Light in Ways was included in our exhibition Simon Lewty: The SIGNificance of Writing (29 April – 10 July 2016) and the work is important as it marks a turning point for the artist.

It complements the works by Lewty already in our collection; The Men Who Lie in the Road and two preparatory tissue paper studies for the piece. It complements the earlier work by Lewty already in the collection: The Men Who Lie in the Road accompanied by two preparatory studies. Lewty himself has also donated a drawing called Abstract Script 4, ink and crayon on paper, 2014 and Art First have donated the print Enact in Here Instinct from the same period.

ARTS SOCIETY The Arts Society is delighted to have supported the Art Gallery & Museum since 2004. Its Heritage Volunteers’ projects have included work on the textile, ethnographic and social history collections. In 2018 they designed and made a quilt for a single bed, based on patterns used for convalescent troops in the First World War. This was then displayed at an exhibition commemorating the conflict. The group have recently been checking the condition and re-packing large textiles which are stored on big rollers. Regular training sessions are held to ensure that the most up to date techniques are employed. These Heritage Volunteers recently won the prestigious West Midlands Museums Volunteer Award for their work at Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum.

These include a series of lectures on arts related subjects, days of special interest to explore a subject in depth, day visits to places of artistic or historical interest, short tours in the UK and abroad and support for Young Arts. The nine monthly lectures at the Royal Spa Centre are given by experts to educate and entertain. They last an hour and start at 11am and are

repeated at 2pm.
