Use this guide throughout the year to help you get and stay active. We want more people to ‘get active’ in Warwick District and to enjoy all the benefits of an active lifestyle. Get Active Week is taking place throughout the County, and this brochure provides information on activities that are running throughout the week in Warwick District, as well an opportunities for us to tell you about other ways of staying active (for example leisure centres, how to find out about local sports clubs, volunteering).

FREE SWIMMING for the over 60’s Swim for free at all Warwick District Council swimming pools. In order for you to claim your free swimming, please apply for a Get Active Card. You will need to complete a Get Active form and show ID in order for us to process your free card. This card will then entitle you to free swimming during any public session and free adult swimming lessons. Please note that Aquafit and the Sauna are not included in this free offer. Please contact Leisure Centres for further details on swimming times.

SWIMMING LESSONS Warwick District Council runs a range of swimming lessons at all three of its pools. These include weekly term time courses; crash courses during school holidays and one to one tuition. All teaching is based on the ASA National Plan for Teaching Swimming and classes are led by a qualified teacher. Warwick District Council Holiday Activities Mailing List In advance of each holiday, a holiday activity leaflet is produced and made available in the Leisure Centres, Council offices, Libraries and Tourist Information Centres. There is also a mailing list facility for those wishing to receive a copy of the leaflet each holiday, and information about other activities in the district. Warwick District Council has compiled a list of over 90 sports clubs in the district that have agreed for WDC to promote club information. The list covers a range of sports. Brunswick Gets Physical This is a new project funded by Sport England and run by staff at the Brunswick Healthy Living Centre. Its aim is to encourage more people in the local community to engage in sport and physical activity through a volunteer ‘buddying’ system. If you are interested in getting fitter and/or can volunteer some of your time to help motivate others to get fitter, then please contact Tracey Neumann, Tel: 01926 422123. Need help getting active? Brunswick Gets Physical Project Do you have good intentions of leading a more active lifestyle? Would you like to try a specific sport or physical activity? This could be walking, swimming or even something more challenging, the options are wide. Would you like to make exercise a more fun and enjoyable experience with the opportunity to make new friends whilst getting fitter too? We can help you get started by providing you with a volunteer buddy.

Warwickshire Wildlife Trust have volunteer groups carrying out regular conservation tasks on nature

reserves. A great way to get some exercise in beautiful surroundings, do something useful and meet new friends. There are Sunday work groups in Crackley Woods, Kenilworth and Hampton Woods, Sherbourne amongst others. Contact www.warwickshire-wildlife-trust.org.uk or call 02476 302912.

Activities for ‘Get Active’ week in Warwick District 11

Kenilworth Common Volunteer Work Party run by Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, Sunday 28th June, start 10am & finish at 1pm, meet at Common Lane, Railway Bridge, Kenilworth. Come in suitable clothing for outdoor work, bring strong gloves, all tools and equipment will be supplied, suitable for all ages. Contact Serena Eccles for more details 01926 858378.

Midwarwickshire Ramblers Association have a weekly ramble on Sundays. For more information go

to www.midwarksramblers.org, as does The Bear Walking Group, www.bearwalkinggroup.co.uk. There are a number of other local ramblers groups and their programmes can be found on the Ramblers website, www.ramblers.org.uk. The Bear Walking Groups fixture for ‘Get Active’ week is the Edstone Aqueduct Circular Walk, a 9.5 mile walk over easy terrain with some mild climbs.

Your Directory of Parks in the District: Abbey Fields in Kenilworth is set in the dramatic valley of the Finham Brook and enjoys views of the historic town, the castle and the parish church.

St Nicholas Park in Warwick offers a wide range of activities including boating, a paddling pool and a fun fair.

Jephson Gardens in the heart of Leamington Spa has been extensively refurbished and has a Sub-Tropical glass house.

Victoria Park in Leamington Spa has a riverside setting and boasts world class bowling green’s as well as a paddling pool and other sports facilities.

Newbold Comyn in Leamington is a country park in all but name. This extensive park of over 120 hectares, offers an 18-hole pay-and-play golf course, informal recreation, sport, wildlife, a public house and a Leisure Centre.

Hire a rowing boat in St Nicholas Park in Warwick or Mill Gardens in Leamington Spa. Try kite flying at Newbold Comyn or Warwick Race Course or stroll around any of our parks.

New Play Facilities For 2009 Thanks to grants from the Big Lottery, play areas at Victoria Park Leamington Spa, St Nicholas Park Warwick, Newbold Comyn Leamington Spa, Castle Farm Kenilworth and Acre Close Whitnash were recently improved with the installation of some brand new play equipment. Featuring amongst other things, large pod swings, spinning bowls and sand pits, the facilities are designed to provide the maximum fun for children of all ages and abilities. The Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire Sports Awards is an annual event to celebrate outstanding sporting success and those who have made a tremendous contribution to sport in the sub region. Sport is such an important contributor to the area and the Sports Awards provide recognition of the achievements of the people involved.

Fourteen award categories represent the full range of contributors to sport in the sub region and the event is managed by a representative group of seven key partner organisations which include Coventry University, BBC Coventry and Warwickshire, University of Warwick, Coventry and Warwickshire 2012 Partnership, Coventry Solihull and Warwickshire Sport, Coventry City Council and Coventry PE and School Sport Partnership.
