TRANSLATIONS Syv barnlige Sange (Seven Children’s Songs) 1. Havet (The Ocean) Rocks and islands! Sea and ocean ever knocking at the door, the pilot awaits with hoisted flag outside the door and shows the way for every ship that passes by.

Skagerak, many thanks! You moisten my cheek; Polar Sea, North Sea, Atlantic Ocean! Snow and fog and shallows and grave are found in all.

Out of the haven, house and calm the Norwegian boys sail, ploughing the seas and doing their duty, whether the ocean be blue or white, sailing until life ends.

2. Sang til Juletræet (The Christmas Tree) Green and glittering tree, good day to you! Welcome are you whom we gladly behold, with Christmas lights and Norwegian flags and high up on top a bright star! May it shine to remind us of our God! 3. Lokk (Farmyard Song) Come, little boy’s billy-goat, come mother’s calf, come, mewing pussycat with snow-white shoes. Come, yellow ducklings, come out of the shed, come, little chickens which barely can walk. Come, all my doves with feathers so fine! See, the grass is wet, but the sun is warm, and the summer has barely begun; but call out for the autumn, and it will come!

4. Fiskervise (Fisherman’s Song) It is often the case that you throw out your line from the thwart but have no luck at catching flounder with hook and line.

For the flounder, like the salmon, does not bite at once, and is a little bit slow. I know many a boy who has waited long yet never caught a bone.

When your line is played out and has reached the bottom, God is well pleased; he will not give you stones. Therefore case your net in Jesus’ name!

God bless you hook that it never shall lack cod in winter or spring! And pray that he may send you and your hook the lively coalfish!

5. Kveldssang for Blakken (Good-night Song for Dobbin) Blakken, my dear foal, Blakken is so weary now. Blakken soon will eat his fill, O Blakken, my foal! Alas, the hill has tired you and the long road has worn you out! It was almost too much for you, my old Blakken!

Dream about it, Blakken: a day of only food and rest, and perhaps a walk around the farmyard with the little lad upon your back.

6. De norske Fjeld (The Norwegian Mountains) If you would go with me over the moor, I would show you the highland path and we would make our way into the mountains where the sun gilds the white peaks.

There are so few fields to farm and yet more are covered by the forest; but the mountains cover most of the land to the north and the south and especially the west.

To the Gudbrandsdal valley first we’ll go where fir trees on high ridges grow, where we must crawl forward foot by foot to see the Rondane mountains right before us.

And north at Dovre, on the broad plateau, sits the mighty Snehætta, enthroned upon her regal seat, enshrouded in snow and sun.

But if you wish to know where best to find the loveliest plateaus and finest peaks, then follow me to the Jotun mountains on a bright summer’s evening. Then we shall sit by the Blitretind peak where the mist disperses with the breeze; and you will hear a whisper in your heart: “Can all this be mine?”

7. Fædrelandssalme (Fatherland Hymn)

O Lord, you who are strong and kind, you protect the land of our forefathers. Be our shield in peace and war, in times of sorrow and of joy.

Here we see what most enthralls us, here is what we love above all: there is no land either near or far which is to us what this is.
