SCHOOLOGY By Nate Egan, Natalie Behzadpour, and Grace Ranallo

Reasons Why It is totally NOT Awesome: 1. Mr. Phillips said so. 2. What was wrong withPowerSchool? 3. Change is bad… just bad. 4. Why start now? 5. Schoooooligy or Schuuology?

Quotes from fellow students and teachers “I’m not technologically savvy to get through the problems, and I have to ask people for help. Now I am very annoying to all of them”.- Mrs. Kruse “It’s terrible” - senior girls lunch table “This is eBackpack lite.” - Jack Fox “Mine doesn’t work.” - Eli Graham

THE CORAL REEF Written by Bianka Malinovic

Several species are being driven to extinction thanks, in large part, to human interference. Sometimes that interference is direct poaching for big game trophies or animal tusks, and sometimes, it's indirect, such as when land is developed and disrupts habitats and entire ecosystems. Coral reefs are endangered by a variety of factors, including: natural phenomena such as hurricanes, El Niño, and diseases; local threats such as overfishing, destructive fishing techniques, coastal development, pollution, and careless tourism; and the global effects of climate change—warming seas and increasing levels. “It’s shocking how quickly the Caribbean reefs crashed. In the 1970s and early 1980s, reefs consisted of about 60 percent live coral cover,” Hay says. “Coral cover declined dramatically through the 1990s and has remained low. It’s now at about 10 percent throughout the Caribbean. Hay is a coral reef specialist. He said, “You used to find living diverse reefs with structurally complex coral stands the size of city blocks. Now, most Caribbean reefs look more like parking lots with a few sparse corals scattered around.” Still, there’s hope. Pacific reefs support 10 times as many coral species as Caribbean reefs, and Clements’ and Hay’s new study suggests that this higher biodiversity may help make these reefs more robust than the Caribbean reefs. There, many species have joined the endangered list, or are “functionally extinct,” still present but in traces too small to have an ecological impact.

Sitting Down with the Stars By: Saif Malik Today I had the splendid opportunity to interview one of the “great” people/ athletes at our school, Douglas Black. What is French club trying to accomplish this year? Douglas: “Honestly, I don’t even know.” What is your French name? Douglas: “François (Frahn-swah) Noir” Are you good at making crepes? Douglas: “I am known around the school for being one of the best.” Are you fluent in French? Douglas: “What do you think mate?” How is your senior football season so far? Douglas: “It’s been a great season for me so far. I am one of the best players on and off the field and very dedicated in the weight room. You can tell this pays off in my game performance. Come watch me destroy Andale Friday night.” What is your pregame song? Douglas: “I don’t have one, I just mess around with the freshmen before.”

Welcome back guys, Shakira and Eman speaking!!!!!! Its officially basically like the best time of the year. Think about it, all the snuggles and scary movies! Plus, its hot chocolate season. It is October which means its fall. Its fall which means its cold. It’s cold which means its festive. Its festive which means it’s basically Halloween, not thanksgiving and not Christmas. Halloween is fun and spooky, BOO. We think it’s only right if we go to field of screams again this year. We’re not sure which one of us is more scared when walking through the maze. Eman does the dash on the clowns though. Just to make this article 3483358798457543 times better, we asked Mr. Stewart a few questions. 1) What is the best candy?

Best chocolate candy is Reese's cups - the small ones that are like an inch in diameter.

This is because the chocolate

to peanut butter ratio is perfect. Best fruity candy is Haribo Fruit Salad, hands down, because they're just the right amount of chewy with a good texture. Hit up World Market if you want some. 2) What is a good age to stop trick or treating? (if you even think people should stop) A good age to stop trick or treating alone is 12 or 13. With friends, high school age is fine, but at the point that you're old enough to have a job and buy your own candy, it's probably time to stop taking other people's candy. If you're with a little kid, any age is acceptable I'd say. 3) When was the last time you went trick or treating as a child? When was the last time you went as an adult? Last time I went was probably 6th or 7th grade as a kid. I haven't trick or treated as an adult, but I have gotten in costume and handed out candy each year.

XOXO, Shakemin

Teenager Greta Thunberg Taking on Climate Change Policy Makers in the U.S by Awab Elamin Teenager, Greta Thunberg, is a 16-year-old girl from Sweden who began last year taking every Friday off from school to demonstrate outside Sweden’s parliament. She has rallied many young people to join her in protesting the lack of action by policymakers on the issue of climate change.Greta was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize earlier in the year after her growing

group of activists, taking part in what they called “Fridays for Future” school strikes, reportedly broke 2 million across 135 countries. On Monday, September 23 of this year, Greta delivered an intensely emotional speech at the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York raising much awareness and discussion about what she and her fellow activists are doing. Thunberg's approach is aggressive and emotional as she accuses policymakers of caring more about money than they do the futures of the planet and of young people around the world. At one point in her speech, Thurnberg said to U.N representatives, “You are failing us, but young people are starting to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations are upon you and if you choose to fail us, I say we will never forgive you.” As it turns out, my sister, who is living and working in New York, was able to attend to Summit and had this to say about the young lady and her fellow activists, “ I was incredibly moved to witness these sixteen young climate change activists first-hand demands, filing a legal complaint and standing up for their rights- a stance and example of what we should all be doing for the future of our children, the world, and ourselves.”

Luke Bryan Concert Review By: Brooks White, Sam Schlatter, and Jon O’Hearn Jon’s Review: Last Friday night, Luke Bryan performed in Hutchinson, Kansas for his farm tour. Even though this was sadly not on a farm due to weather, it was still a great time. The concert was held in the parking lot of the Kansas State Fair Grounds. Despite standing knee-deep in mud, there was no place we’d rather be. Luke Bryan had two openers: Mitchell Tenpenny and Cole Swindell. Mitchell Tenpenny started the concert with a BANG! He did a great job getting the audience hyped up for the next two artists. Cole Swindell came out next and continued to increase the crowd’s energy. In my opinion, Cole Swindell sounded like garbage so finding the positives in his performance is a little difficult. Finally, it was Luke’s turn, and I couldn’t have been happier to see Cole Swindell leaving the stage. Luke Bryan came onto the stage riding a four-wheeler! He also gave a great performance to match his entrance. I was nervous his voice wouldn’t sound as good as it used to, but he had no problems hitting his notes. Overall, I’ll give the concert an 8.5/10. It was fun living the redneck life for a night with the bros. Sam’s Review: When going to this concert, I was hesitant because I am not the biggest country fan. I think a lot of the songs sound the same, but I wanted to go for the love of the boys. Upon arrival to the Hutchinson Fair Grounds, I quickly realized this was not my crowd. There was a lot of country folk with lots of overalls and LOTS of corndogs and beer. A good summary of the people present at the concert was the guy that had a Confederate Flag

sweatshirt on. Despite the interesting crowd, I had a lot of fun with the boys and listening to some above average country music. I would give the concert an 8.78/10 with the mud and the lackluster Cole Swindell bringing the score down. Brooks’ Review: Going into this concert, I was very excited about the atmosphere and being on a farm. Even though it sadly did not end up happening on a farm, it was still a great time. The muddy parking lot made it feel like a true country concert. The concert started with Mitchell Tenpenny, who was an artist I had never really heard of before. He had one of the best performances of the night, even though I didn’t really know any of his songs. The next opener was Cole Swindell, who to be completely honest was horrible. He barely sang any parts of the songs that were playing and when he did, he was messing up the words. Going into it I was excited about him performing, but in the end, I was very disappointed in his performance. The main act for the night was Luke Bryan who put on a great performance. He came out on an ATV and performed some great songs. In the end, I would say this was a great concert. I would rate this concert as a 9/10 sadly losing a point due to Cole Swindell’s embarrassing performance.

The Impossible Burger By Nate Voegeli and Lolly Newman We tried the impossible burger from Burger King. The patty is made out of plants. This burger is described as 100% WHOPPER, 0% beef. We tasted the original whopper and the impossible whopper. Here are our thoughts on this plant-based hamburger.

The Original Whopper -

Dry

-

Disappointing

-

Too many tomatoes and pickles

The Impossible Whopper -

Sweet

-

Tasted better than the original

-

Doesn’t taste like plants

Not really a looker, but looks aren’t that important… unless you’re talking food. smh

Neither burger tasted great but the impossible whopper tasted better than the original. Original whopper- 3.5/10 Impossible Whopper- 6.25/10
