The Messenger March - April The Greatest Day... Ever! The other week someone asked me why I call the day Jesus rose from the dead, Easter. She said I should call the day for what it is, resurrection Sunday. I like that, for that certainly tells us why that day is so significant: making it the most important and triumphant day in human history. The resurrection makes our faith unique for we worship a living Lord. We don't weep when someone steps on a picture of Him, nor set off bombs when a Bible gets accidentally thrown in some burning garbage. Our Lord lives! Through the words of Paul the Apostle, the Bible tells of this account in 1 Corinthians 15:3-8, "Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that He was seen by more than five hundred brethren at once;... After that, He was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all He was seen by me also." To the follower of Christ, what celebration could possibly be more vital to one's faith. Paul wrote that if Christ had not risen from the tomb, then our faith is in "vain", worthless. But, how do we get our loved ones and friends around us excited about a day which centers around such a miraculous event? That's a hard task, because it can't be proven through logic or rationalization. Knowledge such as this can only be gained through personal experience. It's like falling in love. The best way to understand love is to be a partaker in it. The best way to understand the resurrection is to invite the resurrected One into one's heart. God desires to see everyone come to Him through faith in His Son. That's why we have the Holy Spirit of God to gently open the human heart to God's truth and love. This resurrection Sunday, if you already know and love the risen Lord, may God bless "the socks off you". If you have yet to understand what this day is all about, may you too be blessed by joining us and learn more about the greatest day ever. !

SERMON-BASED BIBLE STUDY In January, a new resource was developed by Pastors Rick and Kory to help Bible Study groups find curriculums for study. Using the Sunday message, Pastor Kory develops a study guide that first asks questions for review of the message, then additional questions to go deeper into what was taught, and finally some thought provoking questions for applying the lesson to our daily life. A pastor once told me he was thinking of installing magnets in all of his pews and then forcing all his members to wear underwear with metal in the rear end. This Pastor Kory Wenell way, when the sermon was over, he would not release anyone’s magnet until they had made a commitment on how they were going to apply the message to their lives. I am pretty sure that the pastor never went through with his idea! The motivation behind his idea came from the fact that it is too easy to simply let the sermon go through one ear and out the other. Not only do we not usually apply the sermon to our lives, but we have a hard time remembering on Tuesday what was preached on Sunday. About a month ago, we began offering sermon-based Bible studies to our home groups in the hopes of helping with these concerns. There are a few benefits to a sermon-based Bible study. First of all, it helps people remember what was preached on Sunday. When they have an opportunity to review it later in the week, ask questions about what they heard, and discuss their response to the sermon, their long-term comprehension of the sermon is much higher. I have already had people tell me that they are taking better notes when they listen to the message. What a blessing to be able to hear and remember the preaching of God’s Word better! A second benefit of this type of Bible study is that it allows one to go deeper into the subject that was preached on. A thirty minute sermon has its limitations not only because of its time restrictions, but also because in a sermon, people can’t respond to what is being said. In a Bible study setting, people can go deeper by asking questions, hearing other people’s thoughts, and digging into other passages that relate to the topic. The third and, in my opinion, most important benefit of sermon-based Bible studies is that it promotes application. In these Bible studies, there are questions that challenge the participants to think about how the message relates to their lives. Ultimately, isn’t this our goal in both hearing a sermon and going to Bible study? We want God to change us through applying God’s Word to our lives. If you are interested in joining a home Bible study, please let Pastor Rick or me know. We would love to get you connected to one.

In January, Lillian Shinoda, one of the missionaries we support in Japan, shared her experiences and the Christian relief efforts after the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in March 2011.

A Memory of Aiko Yoshida In February we celebrated the life of Aiko Yoshida who went to be with the Lord on February 22, 2012. I remember first getting to know Aiko when I volunteered to clean her house as part of the Borrowed Muscle program in which twice a year men lend a hand to the widows of our church. She was a very gracious person and always showed her appreciation by thanking me whenever I saw her at church. She also sent out birthday cards and Christmas cards and even a thank you note when I sent her our New Year’s letter last January. The last time we went to clean her house before she moved to be near her family, she gave us the frog (pictured above) to remind us of one of her favorite acronyms, Forever Rely On God. Although time took its toll on her body, she kept her mind young, using e-mail to keep in touch, and creating greeting cards on her computer. A prayer warrior and friend, she will be missed. Glen Waki

Toiletries for the Homeless During winter, several churches in the San Gabriel Valley join together to provide shelter for the homeless. Although we at West Covina don’t have the facilities to house them, we can and did participate this past year in providing them aid. Those freebies like bars of soap, vials of shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrushes that we picked up while traveling were collected and delivered by Yo Maeda to one of the hosting churches. During the holidays we collected enough to give to over one hundred and thirty people. We are asking that when you go on your next trip, you remember the needy and know that they can use the free toiletries that are provided in your room. We will again begin collecting next fall and thank you in advance for your generosity. Nancy Kodama Nurture & Care Committee

Women’s Retreat In October 7-8 of last year, the women of WCCC held a weekend retreat at the Radisson Hotel. One of the organizers, Anne Smith provided the following testimony. Another retreat has come and gone but what I learned will linger with me. Joy, Faith and Contentment. Joy is a gift from God, our faith must be strong to sustain us for such a time as this, be content no matter where God has us because he is our sovereign God and always knows what we are going through. As I think back to our first retreat, I can feel real joy now. I must admit that my faith has grown considerably since then. I don’t get stressed out about the details anymore. God works everything out including the smallest detail all year long and we are always blessed. I’ve learned to trust Him more, follow where He leads and watch as He brings the ladies He has chosen to minister to. I am privileged to be part of a great team and we do work well together. Every decision made is bathed in prayer as we wait upon the Lord to guide and direct us. We have a passion and a vision for our ministry and our excitement never stops. We look forward to each year to see what God is going to do next. God has given each one of us talents that will enable us to carry out His will. Content? Yes I must say I am content where God has me. I have joy as I watch how God’s plans are revealed, and my faith grows stronger everyday because I know He is our sovereign God and He is in absolute control. My prayer is that you will have the same passion and vision for your ministries and be excited about how God will use you to accomplish His purpose and you will know the true meaning of joy.

The Creation of Mochitsuki

MOCHITSUKI is a centuries old tradition of pounding rice to form small cakes of doughy consistency consumed by Japanese, usually for New Years. Mochi used to be made by pounding cooked rice with wooden mallets (pictured above). Once the rice is pounded to a smooth consistency, it is formed into the small cakes by hand (shown in the pictures to the right. Today there are machines that do the job of cooking and pounding more efficiently, but we try to keep traditions alive by teaching younger generations of our cultural history.

The time of fellowship was highlighted by the warm welcome and opening devotional by Emi Iwanaga, and the tea and food service by the faithful and gracious men of our church. We are so blessed to have such giving members who came together with God’s grace to accomplish this memorable event!
