FROM THE JUNGLE efore I get down to the nuts and screws of what has Btributes. and will happen in WB footy, a couple of important

MILLICENT V SOUTH GAMBIER As I said last week, a plethora of young talent at McL Park. And whilst the Saints have shown glimpses of genuine intent in patches this year, they struggle to go the full nine yards. And I don’t think their fire hose is long enough to extinguish the heat in the Ds engine room of A + B Bryant, S + M Berkefeld, Howard, BP O’Neil, Xlby, etc etc And Cam Haggett will need plenty of help v Jumpin Jak Ryan and Hulk Slape

Firstly, to all the mums out there-thanks!! And I might add to extend that heartfelt sentiment to all those, such as the Phant’s, who have passed on to fly with heaven’s angels. It’s been said before, but every day should be Mum’s Day. Sadly that isn’t possible for more reasons than , but at least this weekend. The second tribute is to one of The Phant’s Western Border favourites, Steve ’Digger’ Duldig, or as I affectionately refer to him as ‘The Ice Man of McLaughlin Park’. Well done on reaching 250 games played, you are still mixing it with the best after all these years.

South by 34 points

NORTH V WEST Potentially half the WB Interleague team will be on public display here- McConnell, O’Grady, Blachut, Egan, Flett etc etc v Holmes, Wilson, McElroy, Wenman etc etc, so based on the AFL philosophy the price of gate entry should be doubled for this one. The Roos gave the Tiges a mighty fright in last year’s decider, reckon they might do so again.

STARS FROM ROUND 3 Watching the first half under the frosty skies at McDonald Park last Saturday night it looked as if the young Bullies might give Coach Duncan a bigger tummy ache than a dodgy vindaloo. But one Demon stood tall when and where it counted most, the Xlby Factor. I know he is coaching the WB interleague team, I reckon he should have a good hard look in the mirror about who should line up in front of the long skinny white ones on June 7. Over at Malseed Park the Cats almost strangled the Roos with Pussy’s Bow, and if they had been a little better disciplined early might have been licking the cream from the saucer at day’s end. The Usual Suspects were thicker than a pie floater at 2am, but it was the defence led by Sam Robson that made the difference. Poor Ice Man Duldig didn’t have time to straighten his athletic support before the Chief Michelin McConnell had speared a couple of early holes through the Sainters defence- and it didn’t stop there as he fell just one short of a Bo Derek.

THIS WEEK CASTERTON SANDFORD V EAST GAMBIER Great form shown by the Cats in the past two outings, but the Bullies also had more sting in their tails last week. The Kaiser is a big inclusion for East, and Stooge Balshaw will relish the support around the packs. But they need to keep a close check on Dylan Ryan, he can cause more potential carnage than a test pitch in Pakistan.

A Mother’s Gift - Janette Fischer From the very first time, you hold your child Their first gift is your heart forever, The love you give and they return Is the bond that will hold you together Throughout their life, your love will be A light that guides their way The beacon aglow in the darkness Should they ever go astray Your love will give them courage When the way ahead is unclear And will give them strength, when needed To help overcome their fears Your love will accept them for who they are Whatever they say or do, Your love will forgive unreservedly Because they are a part of you It's a love that will know no barriers Have no bounds, no expectations Your love will be unconditional, Pure, with no complications A love that remains as constant As the stars in the heaven above A gift no money on earth can buy, The gift of a mother's love. 3

Western Border Goes Pink For Breast Cancer The Western Border Football and Netball League will be in the pink again this Mother’s Day weekend (10 May) as players compete in the sixth annual Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) Pink Sports Day. BCNA’s Pink Sports Day is a chance for sporting clubs across Australia to show their support for, and pay tribute to, women and families from their local communities who have been affected by breast cancer. Money raised over the pink weekend will go directly to BCNA to support its work in ensuring women diagnosed with breast cancer anywhere in Australia are provided with the very best information, services and support possible. WBFL CEO David Heard urges locals to get behind the League’s clubs this weekend. “Pink Sports Day, or Pink Footy and Netty Day as it is the Western Border, is a great opportunity for the whole community to put on a show of strength and support for women and families affected by this terrible disease,” Heard said. “We hope that people will support the event as much as possible, wear some pink, get involved, and make a cash donation as they cheer on their teams.” Visit www.bcna.org.au to find out more about BCNA activities and support programs.

Welcome East Gambier. What a Game! It was promoted as match of the round and didn’t it live up to it! Both teams came out of the race ready to prove their worth, with tough determined contested footy. Josh Stephenson dominated the forward line with strong marking and straight kicking, The Currie brothers nullifying the West on ball brigade. Nick Upton marshalling the defenders to lead from the front rebounding everything he could his hands on. Unfortunately West had the superior determination for the contested ball and came away with the points. The boys in the seconds are playing with real companionship this year with their teamwork a highlight. From Beau Kirkwood in the ruck providing ample supply to the on ball brigade, to the BIG DUO of Rick Killey and Matt Kurzman in the forward line. With Kane Forbes and Classy Cat Adrian Jarrad in the backline performing admirably. The U/17’s were very unlucky losing by the last kick of the day; they played courageously all day but unfortunately just couldn’t get over the line. The U/15’s played their best football to date, teaming up with each other to outplay a very competitive West Gambier. Hopefully all teams can exhibit the Casterton/ Sanford way and come away with four wins this week versus East!! A very pleasing day at West reflected the work ethic the juniors are putting in with their coaches. With many of them playing out of their age group so as many girls as possible can experience playing competitive netball for the club they are doing a great job. Their large learning curve will hold them in good steed for the future and that of the CSFNC. On the senior front congratulations to Madalene and her A Res charges on their first win and more importantly the brand of netball they played. B and C Graders are developing never say die attitude with both definitely in the hunt in 2014. The resilience and strength of character of our A Graders who are willing to put themselves, their bodies and fitness on the highest stage to represent their Club and Community is always appreciated and a great example to all. BULLDOG BARKS

eaST gambier

Club Notes

Mount Gambier & District Community Bank®Branch

A brisk night on the park saw some Young Guns give a shove in a battle, where some of the Hot Shots of the night were celebrated but not rewarded. Glad to say the skills on the park showed the WBFL is still a Major League. In a game where 99% of the time on the park there are winners & losers, often it’s a Wall Street rally and a Platoon of soldiers doing a heap of work for the greater good that gets things moving rather than Wisdom. Where there is No Code of Conduct, transparency is the essence of moving forward and this stops people creating their own Shadow Conspiracy. Transparency also allows constructive discussion and is often much cleaner than a Foodfight! Looking forward to the challenges set before us, you don’t need to be Famous to see that the biggest ones are the obstacles we put up in front of ourselves. Everyone can have a Bad Day on the Block but with Good Advice you realise you don’t have to be John Malkovich to know there’s no such thing as Free Money. As Carlos Irwin Estévez would say it’s all about Winning! Sarah Lock was one of the Bulldogs best last week, shooting 10 from 13 in the opening quarter to set the tone for a solid shooting performance. Rachael Hines was the pick of the young Bulldogs’ line-up, taking a number of interceptions and getting her hands on the ball time and time again to disrupt the Demons’ delivery. She always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. East coach Bo Richards also got in on the act with the interceptions, relishing the Demons’ careless delivery.

2004 Reserves Premiership reunion – Friday 18th July 6pm till late, Past Players and Committee Day – Saturday 19th July TONIGHT JUNIOR DOGGY DISCO – East Gambier Sportmans Club. For all junior footy and netball players. 6-8pm. $5 entry. NETBALL FACEBOOK All Western Border netballers and anyone interested in what is going on with the players, officials and volunteers in our association are reminded to log onto our facebook page www.facebook.com/westernbordernetball to keep up with results and any other news as well as weekly photo galleries. The association’s website should be up and running in the next fortnight. The changeover to a new system has been more problematic than originally thought but you will be the first to know when it is all up and running. All results and other news will be available on both the facebook page and website from that point. Once again all clubs are reminded to forward any interesting news or stories, including milestones and special achievements by your members, to Di Gould at editorial@lifestyle1.net and she can upload your information to the facebook page and website. Don’t forget Pink Sports Day is next week (May 10) so break out the pink, rattle the tins and come up with your own ways to raise money for breast cancer. 14

“THE WESTERN”

Club Notes

We travelled to North Gambier last week and braved the elements to come away with 3 wins from 9 games. The A-grade came away with another win, with the three other senior teams unfortunately losing to the stronger North sides. Our juniors are proving to be tough opponents with both the 15s and 17s winning in tough games. Unfortunately both the 13s and 12s were defeated by North in close matches. Today we want to congratulate both Paula Tunkin and Bronwyn Turner on significant milestones in there impressive netball careers. Paula will hit the court today with the A-reserve to play her 350th Senior Netball Game whilst Bronwyn plays her 300th senior game today playing in the B-grade. We would also like to congratulate the girls that were selected to represent the Western Border in their respective teams. 13s – Tayla Werchon, Isabelle Turner; 15s – Sophie Ferguson, Keah Lynch, Madison Turner & Alana Craig (reserve); and 17s – Lucy Walker, Alex Walker, Danika Jolley. We wish theses girls good luck for their trip to Adelaide on June long weekend. Today we come up against South and are expecting some tough games and fierce rivalry on the court, let’s play hard so we come away with the points. Congratulations also go to Steve Duldig who is playing his 250th senior football game for the Millicent Football Netball Club! GO SAINTS!! Pink Sports Day (Breast Cancer fundraiser) Mother’s Day raffle: The winners will be drawn tonight at the club after presentations. With some excellent prizes make sure you buy a ticket! Live Entertainment: Jon Peters will be performing live from 9pm at the Club. ($5 cover charge)

Thought I would give Tunks the weekend off from having to deal with phone calls from offended people (by the way if your offended, nothing happens you don’t catch Aids or anything) and talk about Club legend Steve Duldig who plays game 250 for the club today. Steve or “Digger” as he is known played his first A grade game for the Saints in 1995 under coach Craig “Fatty” Skeer, while he was still playing under 18’s. Of his 250 games Digger has only played one reserves game in 1996. Steve went to Adelaide in 1997 and stayed for 3 years study and a stint at Port Adelaide where he broke his leg which put him out of action for a while. Had he gone to Sturt like Brother Matt he could have been a legend! In 2000 Steve returned and under coach Andrew “Bowl” Nitschke and settled into the consistent player that he has been for the last 14 years. In 2008/09 Digger coached the Seniors and did a terrific job and hopefully he will have another crack as he has so much experience and knowledge to pass on. His accomplishments are many, 11 times he has finished in the top five in the Best and Fairest never winning it, Runner Up 4 times, not that it would worry him as he is the ultimate team player. Border Watch/ Hamilton Spectator Team of the Year many times, S.A Country Team Representative several times winning the Kitschke Medal as best country player in Australia! WBFL and S.E. Zone team Rep most years. One thing missing is a Premiership which came terribly close in 2010 Playing mainly as a key backman Steve is occasionally put up forward and on the ball which begs the question why didn’t parents Tracy and Brian have 18 kids? Perhaps now that Brian has retired we can get him into some sort of egg fertilizing system for the future? Tracy and Brian have supported Steve and the MFNC in many ways, Netball, Committees, and Executive etc. So someone give Brian the day off from selling beers today so he can watch Steve. Wife Lisa who has all the premierships and son Pacy will be cheering Steve on today, well done Digger. Neil Brown

Club Notes

Mount Gambier & District Community Bank®Branch

A visit to the Kennel last week paid off with all but the Under 15’s taking home a win last weekend. Our U13’s had a bit of a scare from a fight-back in the second quarter but soon put it out of their minds and came out with a comfortable 49-22 win. The U15’s were facing an uphill struggle against the ladder leaders and after a low-scoring affair ended the game down 33-18. The U17.5’s took control early on in the game and held a commanding 5 goal lead at half time. This was maintained through to the final siren for a 63-33 victory. Our Reserves faced a bit of a battle with their grip on the lead wavering throughout the game, but held on to finish the match with a 6 point victory 53-47. It was time for the lights as our Seniors came out looking for a win after their previous round defeat and were out of the gates early on with a 5 goal lead at the first break. East fought back reducing that lead to just 3 goals at half time and then 15 points at the third. The Seniors regrouped during the last break and a few quick goals broke the East defences and opened up a 43 point victory 123-80. Brett Exelby lead the way again with 7 goals and named BOG followed up by Brad Cordy with 4, Jak Ryan and Ash Bryant with 2 each and Brent Howard and Dion Stratford in our best on field. We are on the road this week heading across to Millicent for Pink Footy and Netty Day and encourage all our supports to donate to this worthy cause. Go Demons! Under lights, South never looked in trouble but it was an error ridden performance with the main positive being the fact they snared the premiership points. On the back of shooting recruit Malinda Markiewicz scoring 10 from 10 in the opening stanza, South enjoyed a four goal quarter time buffer and that was extended to nine by the main change. Markiewicz and Chantelle Weir shared the shooting duties in this quarter, knocking down 12 from 14 between them in a promising performance of this new combination. South pushed the margin out to as many as 16 in the third quarter before the quarter ended up all square and the margin was still nine. In the end South ran out winners by 11 goals with Markiewicz a stand out against her former club and Megan Hein showing plenty of promise at wing attack – not just with her strong driving and clever delivery but some important defensive stops as well. Lisa King was again the mainstay of the Demons defensive end, Enjoy and evening with former Gold Coast and Hawthorn player Campbell Brown. Campbell will be in town on Wednesday May 14th and is sure to have some great stories to tell. Contact Bob at the clubrooms on 8725 1977 for details and tickets.

First winter day at the football and our first home game of the year as we hosted Millicent. Great day for our veteran Scott Flett who celebrated his 300th game with an emphatic win. The seniors came up against a depleted Millicent but to Millicent’s credit never gave up and didn’t allow us to score heavily althjough would have looked better if the FF could find the gap late in the game. Best players T Mac , Hyphe ( back in seniors), Nick Hanga Moretti, Hamish Telford, Sam Egan and Sheriff. The Reserves continued on their merry way although the conditions didn’t suit both side as they found it hard to control the slippery ball and the umps could get it right at times either. Better players Max McPherson, Paul Griff, Sam Shepherd, Brett Kennedy, Jack Gibbs and Tim Young. Under 17s had a enormous win with Millicent depleted with players filling senior positions. The boys played a great brand of football sharing it around with multiple goal kickers. Best players Brad Close(7) Josh Jenner, Angry , D Kenny and Tom Flett. Under 15’s The Under 15’s played a great brand of team football and were rewarded with 42 point win against Millicent. Their efforts at training and their positive attitude after a couple of difficult weeks are to be commended. Keep up the good work boys and your efforts will continue to show in the type of football you put out on the ground.. Best players were 1 Nick Brown 2 Declan Carmody 3 Will Stafford 4 Kenny Lam 5 Damon Argy and special mentions to Sam Shaw and Shaun Butterfield. Under 13’s The boys played a really well coached Millicent side and played their best football of the year but unfortunately went down by 22 points. A special welcome to Jack Lockwood who played his first game and managed to get in the best players. Congratulations to Jacob Armitage who played his second game of football and was our best player on the day. Best players were 1. Jacob Armitage 2. Sam Bruhn 3. Joel Williamson 4. Mason Engel 5. Jack Lockwood 6. Jayden Moore. This week we host West and the traditional’ Battle Of The Park’. Lets all get to the footy and support the boys. Go Tigers Despite wet and windy conditions during last week’s clash against Millicent at home, our girls returned seven wins from nine teams. Well Done Tigers! Millicent proved to be a tough battle for our A Grade girls being defeated 70 to North 36. The A Reserve girls had a 16 goal win, North 47 to Millicent 31 to add an extra level of celebrations for Kerry Bilney’s 300th game. Lisa’s B Grade team had a comfortable win North 50 to Millicent 36. Well done to Tanya’s C Grade girls who chalked up their first win for the season defeating Millicent 48 to 18. Under 17’s lost by a small margin of six goals and the Under 15’s produced a great win, North 29 defeated Millicent 22. Under 13’s have started the season with a hat trick of three consecutive wins North 27 to Millicent 11. Our youngest teams in the 12 A and 12 B’s demonstrated great skills on court and enjoyed comfortable wins also. Congratulations to all award winners for round three! Thanks to all umpires and supporters for braving the conditions and encouraging our teams and thank you to all our sponsors for your much appreciated commitment to the club. Club Notes

Mount Gambier & District Community Bank®Branch

Pretty tough day at the office for the boys. While getting the win, came at a cost with a number of injuries a concern in the next few weeks. The boys however found a way to win after being down by nearly 3 goals and showed a great amount of resilience. The return to field of Kayne Ob seemed to spark a resurgence, and it was a gutsy win in the end. Best was Sam Robson in defence. Daron McElroy in the ruck, Tom Holmes, Brad Wilson, Jesse Pfitsner and Elliot King. Nic Allen took some great grabs to finish with 4, Josh Schapel and Brad Wilson kicked a couple. The reserves played better than the scoreline looked however went down in the end. Stick to coach Suto’s instructions boy’s and it will happen. Best was Luke Patching, Brodey Koop, Nathan Koopman, Matt Weyers and Lachlan Wookey. The U/17 lads left it to the death knock to get their noses in front with Jackson Lock slotting a major about 30 second before the final siren, and nearly giving coach Elliot King a heart attack! Lawrie Bradley Brown showed off some fantastic footy skills to be our best, Mitch Kipping rebounded well, Jackson Lock with 3 goals, Nathan Tilley was dour in defence and Kyle Giddiings was creative, The U/15 side was out muscled, continually coming up against, older, bigger, stronger sides but to their credit, keep on having a crack. Best players included Adam Pulford,. Bailey VonDuve, Nathan Taylor, Jet Attard, Braiden Tilley and Braden Frost. Today, we travel to the old haunt in quest for the Tom Hall trophy and at our best, have every reason to give ourselves a chance against the North Tigers. Reminder the awards will be presented at our Sponsor, the Commersh at 6.30pm and also for teas. Last Saturday we played host to Casterton/Sandford netball club, finishing the day with 4 wins, 3 losses and a draw. Congratulations go out to our little stars in the U12s for their first win for the season, and also to the 13’s for coming oh so close, to finish with a draw. We had another big day celebrating milestones last week. This time it was the turn of Taylor Pearson in the 13’s who played her 50th club game. This was followed by Linda Boylan racking up game 100 in the A Reserves, followed by Mollie Muhovics, also playing game 100, in the A Grade. Congratulations to all 3 on their fantastic achievements for our club. IN the A grade last week, West were able to secure their second win for the season running out winners 59-36. Again being led by Lisa and Amy Cram, judged best on court. The A res girls went down 59-52 in a tight tussle. Without Sammi, there were a few changes in the defensive end, but it was the attackers in Ashley and Linda winning the awards. B Grade held off a fast finishing Cats, to hold on for a 1 goal win, 34-33. Koach Kaz and Jess both played strong 4 quarter games. The C Grade girls went down 32-51. Hayley and Bron in the centre court were named as best players. 17’s went down 24-33, with the best players going to Tahlia and Mollie. 15’s enjoyed their second win for the year with a great win 37-15. New player Stacey and Maggie were the award winners. In the 13’s we had our draw 16 all. Our award winners here were Taylor and Emmy H. Finally our little stars had their first win 19-0, with the 2 Emily’s (Dawe and Nieuwerkerk) leading the way, although it was a great game from the whole team. Today we travel over to North for Pink Footy/Netball day. We will have tins out for Breast Cancer Network, so please donate to this worthy cause. Following the game teas and awards will be at the Commersh – please come and support one of our sponsors. Good luck !!! Coming Events: Player Shuffle, 17th May after the South game : see Brad Wilson to pay for a song and a chance to win some coin.
