“THE WESTERN”

FROM THE JUNGLE Welcome back after another splintered round of Western Border footy and netty. Now we can all settle down for the next four weeks in what is fast looming as a sprint to the wire for final home and away placings. Congratulations to Simon Berkefeld on not just being selected in the SA Country side that beat WA Country in Perth last weekend, but also being named high on the best players list So who were the stars from Round 11? 1. Was playing out of his division earlier this year, but Leigh Collins has stepped up and was named best for the Rooboys 2. Brett O’Neil starred again, and can maybe start dreaming of possibly etching his name on the WBFL Honour Board. But there is also plenty of young talent shining through at Demonland, at the minute, and Brodie Carracher led the Brat Pack last week. 3. Credit where it’s due. When he concentrates on playing footy, he is worth the gate admission. Was on the losing side, but The Phant reckons Dylan Ayton might have picked up the 3 votes at Island Park. Special mention to Dog Jesse Fry.

The Western Border premiership compass suddenly went into a tailspin last week when North had their whiskers licked by South, and the Roos will start dreaming again. The Tigers line up is littered with gold, but take the grunt of Paddy Perry and the pace and smooth finishing of Nick Blachut out of the midfield and they look vulnerable. Good to see Steve Wenman up and about last game, and his ongoing return to form and fitness will help straighten West up in the run home. Michelin McConnell did his best Peter Finch impersonation in Network after the final bell last week, and I don’t think his little cubs want to endure that pain again. North by 20 points

MILLICENT v EAST The Saints are playing for pride, but for the Doggies this game means a whole lot more than that. As good as Stribling and Pfeiffer have been for the East line up in recent weeks, it’s some of the maturing ‘second tier’ group such as Matt Dempsey, Anthony Wilson, Grady Janeway etc who have risen like a phoenix in support. A win for the Doggies will keep the tail wagging for another week. Drop this, and they can start packing their tutus for Mad Monday. East by 2 points WORDS OF WISDOM “Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until ‘Till next week... you hear them speak.” The Phantom

ROUND 12 PREVIEWS CASTERTON V SOUTH GAMBIER It all seems a bit like Groundhog Day, with the Ds heading back to Casterton for the second time in three weeks. But plenty has changed in that small window of time. South knocked off the comp leaders in style last outing, while the Cats now find themselves clinging by their claws in the Top Four. Coach Ayton will be happier than a jack rabbit eating jumping beans if the Catters can spring the biggest surprise in WB footy since, well, last week. Big Zac Michau started wrapping his paws around the Sherrin late against East, if he can get his kicking eye straight the Caters might be a chance. But the Ds have been down the September bunny hole too many times to slip up now. South by 16 points

West had a chance to show everyone outside their own lunch box they were genuine contenders a few weeks back against the flag favourites, but they were smacked badly by the Tigers. 1

“THE WESTERN”

Footy Talk –with ‘Demps’

Article courtesy The Border Watch

Well the South Gambier Football Club has breathed a bit of life into the WBFL, with a big win over flag favourites North Gambier. North is allowed to have an off day, they were undefeated, and a loss now may be just the trick to wake themselves up before finals. The worrying part maybe the ease of South’s win and without their star Simon Berkefeld the win was even more impressive. Without Berkefeld in the team it was a good opportunity for a few other players to shine. Brett O’Neil has been one of South’s best players over the last few years, but unfortunately doesn’t get the accolades he deserves playing under the shadow of Berkefeld. Last Saturday O’Neil showed North and the crowd just how a talented player he is, and with a full list of players come finals time, South could be right in the mix for a premiership flag. East Gambier kept their Finals hopes alive with tough win against a gallant Casterton at Island Park. The game was of a beauty, high standard and very entertaining with both sides prepared to play on at all costs; Both sides are young and full of talent, and if they can keep these players at their clubs, both will be very good sides next year. Early in the last quarter Casterton had all the momentum, looking as if they were going to run away with the game, but to east credit it was a gutsy win to stem the tide and win by23 points. With the split round West and Millicent played last weekend in the rain, mud and cold, from all reports it was a tough physical game. To Millicent’s credit they were right in the game but West just seem to find away to keep winning. Both sides would have appreciated the week’s break. West looks as if they may have booked themselves a place in this year’s preliminary final, they look a bit too settled and have the class of players for whichever team limps into that fourth spot. South and North will play each other in the second semifinal, which people may say will be a prelude to the Grand final but they would not want to lose and come up against a inform West a week later.

Buddy or Roughead ? Hawthorn Football Club are the envy of most AFL sides, with a two pronged attack of goal kicking figureheads in Buddy Franklin and Jarryd Roughead. Buddy is being wooed by the Greater Western Sydney franchise with talk of millions of dollars if decides to move North. I have no doubt Buddy will have the effect they are looking for, in getting more people to watch both at the ground and on television, sell more merchandise, sign bigger sponsors and have a surge in club memberships. I suppose that is what football is about these days, more money you generate, and the better players you will attract. Poor old Jarryd Roughead, in winning a game of football, is he more important to the Hawthorne than Buddy? Roughead can play where ever he is needed, Ruck Back or Forward, he is strong talented and versatile. Jarryd Roughead is never going to have the same pay day as Buddy. Jarryd just hasn’t got the charisma and pulling power of the almighty dollar that Buddy has. I think you know who I would rather have in my side, but lucky for Hawthorn at the moment they have them both.

“THE WESTERN”

After a week off because of the split round everyone should be refreshed and ready to push on with the season. Only a few rounds to go but there is still plenty to be resolved; Top 4 to be finalised, where will these games be played?, when is the damned election (don’t forget to enrol to vote)?, whats happening with the WBFL next year and following years?, is North still the team to beat?, which players are available for the rest of the year?. Then there is the same questions regarding our juniors sides. Hopefully they can continue to be successful and we will almost have a full contingency playing finals. Today we welcome the Tigers and they will be keen to bounce back after South put them to the sword, real test in all 4 grades and as club I know we are all looking forward to the challenge. Welcome to all our sponsors and hope you enjoy the day. There is some exciting coming events on at the club so get involved where you can, our footballers are very friendly and will encourage night time participation by all our supporters. Well two weeks ago we headed down the road to play Millicent… some of us got there early and missed the amazing hail al over the road, luckily everyone got there safe and sound, and it was even nicer of Millicent to turn the weather on (for almost all of the day) for us too. We had Bec Humphries play her 50th club game, Bec does an amazing job in the C Grade this year, while also helping out the 17’s. Our only winners for the day were the B’s, C’s and 17’s. It was good to see coach Amy return to the court in the A Grade, after the birth of her son, and at the other end of the scale it is amazing to watch the improvement in our little U12s each week. They really give their all for coaches Fiona and Julie each week. This week we start the run home to the finals, with only 4 games remaining. Now that all the byes are done with it will be good to string a few games together and end the season on a high. Today we meet North (again!!) at home, and hopefully some of the results from 3 weeks ago will go in our favour. Remember to support the club and join us for awards at 6.00, followed by teas. Good luck to everyone today !! A Gr: 39-55 Best Rachael and Lisa | A Res: 42-53 Best Lauren and Charity | B Gr: 63-24 Best Sammi and Chloe | C Gr: 52-29 Best Elysha and Tracey !! | 17’s: 30-20 Best Tahlia and Claire | 15’s: 26-31 Best Georgia H and Olivia | 13’s: 12-32 Best Eliza and Skye

“THE WESTERN”

Last week at Blue Lake Sports Park saw us come away with a 50% win loss for the day, which is a rare occurrence for the yellow and black. The under 15s went down but on a positive were 3 goals difference better off against the same opposition last time. The boys have improved from the start of the year. Best were Christian Magracia, Tom Bruhn, Brad Close, Nick Steen, Josh Everard, Wade Byrne. The under 17s kept there good season on track with a comfortable win showing some great skill mixed with some hard running. Best Matty Mcinerney, Ben Bruhn, Matt Allen, James Hunter, Stephen Sochacki, Jordy Mansell. The reserves put on a good show with a few blokes certainly putting their hand up for selection in the seniors which is great to see the depth of the club. Best Nick Moretti 5 goals, Alex Bowd, Matthew Chapman, Jack Gibbs, Jake Schutz. The seniors had their first loss for the year, South lead from the front from the start playing real team orientated footy. Best players were hard to find but some to get a nod were Timmy Mcinerney, Scotty Flett, Richie O’Grady, Troy Hosking. Today we visit Malseed Park in what I am sure will be a game where our boys will put all at stake to restore pride they have within themselves. With all teams gathering momentum lets come away with four wins. Cmon Tiges. Richard Copeland. Another great day by the Tigers against South last week with 6 wins and a draw. In a hard fought battle, the A grade were unlucky to go down by 3 but it looks like these 2 teams will be meeting again in the finals where I am sure they will be turning the tables. Best players were the ‘junior A graders’ Meg & Brianna. A Res had a convincing win. Best - Ailie & Christie ‘30’ McCourt. Happy birthday Critta! What a thriller the B grade had nudging over the line by 1 goal. Best - Georgia & Lisa. Both teams in the C’s showed brilliant patches of play. Three awful injury times called in the last half by our girls made us lose our momentum and a draw was the result Best -Kristen & Ash Pietsch with Ash also celebrating her 50th senior game. The 17’s had a great percentage win with Danika & Jamie earning best. Keelin & Emily helped their under 15 girls win 40-22. The u 13’s came up against the top team. Congrats to Lauren & Tayla on a great game and for never giving up. The 12A’s & B’s are improving every week with Jessica & Claire winning the awards for the A’s. Great play also by Tara & Charlotte in the B’s. But as I scored this game, the highlight of the day for me was tiny Lily Engel who put the GA bib on and scored 3 goals in a row. You couldn’t wipe the huge smile off her face. Go Tiges!

“THE WESTERN”

Unfortunately Casterton couldn’t over power East Gambier going down by 23 points. The return of Casterton’s big men Adam McKenzie and Timmy MacMichaels brought confidence back to the Cats footballers. Dylan Ayton lead from the front and was named best on ground. Rohan Cleary and Kyle Carlin were both strong presence in the back line again. Unfortunately the cats missed the height & experience of Grant Coxon and Julian Schill.Best Players: Dylan Ayton, Brandon Currie, Kyle Carlin, Zac Michau and Zac Howlett RESERVES: 2013 season has proven to be a very prosperous for the Cats Reserves a place in the finals in something past coaches and players have dreamt of.Unfortunately Casterton lost the on Saturday however it was a hard fought battle between two quality sides. Keep an eye out for these two teams when finals come around. Best Players: Hamish Beauglehall, Michael Jarrad, Jake Smith, Stephen Sharp, Hayden Smith, Jed Clode, Ricky Killey, Steven Koch and Daniel Wombwell. Under17’s: Had a comfortable win over East on Saturday by 15 point win. Best Players: Diarmid Cleary, Damian Wombwell, Fraser Kent, Angus Cleary, Sam Diegmann and Isaac Forbes. Under 15’s: Unfortunately Casterton couldn’t secure the victory on Saturday, however they demonstrate some fantastic football. Best Players: Cori Hornibrooke, Aiden Naylor, Billy Galpin, Kobe Zippel, James Millich and Ben Guthrie. In very cold conditions we welcomed East to Island Park to battle it out on the netball courts for the third time this season. The 12s tasted success for the first time this year, A and A Reserve kept their finals aspirations alive with solid wins, B grade lost by the smallest of margins, C grade, 17s and 15s came up against strong opponents. 12s: 21-19, Faroes Newsagency – Chelsea Galpin, Caeleigh Humphries, Bailey Gibbs, Claire Foster. 15s: 22-55, Mark Davis Cleaning – Maya Gorman, Hannah Waters. 17s: 23-35: Spill the Beans – Isobel Cleary, Jim Tant – Abbey Shannon, Tayla Guthrie. C grade: 31-42, Casterton Pharmacy – Prue Robbins, Glennys Takeaway – Maya Gorman. B grade: 50-51, Hairwize – Chloe Pratt, This’n’That – Bridie Tierney. A Reserve: 53-27, Ladies Committee – Sharna Fidler, Claire Outtram. A grade: 68-58, Glennys Takeaway – Gorgia Sealey, Dergholm Hotel – Marni Perry. McNamara’s player of the day – Sharna Fidler for consistently strong defence. Congratulations to Tayla Guthrie who played her 100th game for the club last week – a terrific effort by the bottom age 17s player. Today we meet South again after only playing them a few weeks ago and let’s try and win a couple more games than we did last time. GO CATS!

“THE WESTERN”

What a great way to finish off the split round with a win we have been waiting all season for. Our Senior squad took North to task and shut them down at every turn, the Tigers only managing one major for the first half. The loss of Brad Cordy near the end of the first quarter to a hamstring problem only served to push our boys harder and show North what we are truly made of. A lead of over 4 goals at the final break gave us a nice buffer but everyone knew how quickly North can kick goals if they are left alone. Our back line was well served by Josh Wilson and Jed Mullen who kept North’s attack in check and helped us secure a 5 goal win. Brett O’Neil showed his leadership skills with a best on ground performance along with Jak Ryan, and Brett Exelby booting kicking three goals along with 2 from Ash Bryant. Our U15’s had a comfortable win with a strong start continuing throughout the game ending with a 6 goal victory, helped along by 3 from Dylan Ridding. The U17’s and Reserves were not able to get a win, going down by 36 points and 79 points respectively. Congratulations go to Simon Berkefeld for representing SA against WA Country in Perth last weekend and along with celebrating a win, snagged a goal and was named in the team’s best players. We head back over the border again this week to put a firm stamp on our position on the ladder in the lead up to the finals. Go Demons! Plenty of tight contests on Saturday against North with the A grade coming from behind to secure a win, the B grade unfortunately, with key players missing, giving up a lead and losing a nailbiter and the C grade drawing in another tense encounter. No doubt the coaches would appreciate teams trying to build and maintain leads as we all head into the finals rather than causing stress and anxiety. The 15s deserve a special mention this week in what has been a tough season, scoring a season high 22 goals in a really admirable performance against one of the top ranked sides in the competition. Fittingly, the two goalies, Halle and Katie were named best, with Maddi working super hard defensively with some help from Jade, and Georgie and Lucy running hard through the middle with good support from Lozzie and Tash. Well done girls in showing great improvement. Make sure you mark the Great Gatsby theme night in your diaries – it is Saturday, August 10, after the East game and will be a great night, particularly if everyone gets into the spirit of the event and dresses up in Gatsby themed outfits. Thanks also to the 17s girls who manned the kitchen on Saturday night with the help of a handful of 17s footballers – good job guys – much appreciated.

“THE WESTERN”

Welcome to all Sponsors and Life Members today as we tackle East Gambier and strive for our second win of the season. Sponsors day today in the club at 2pm so let’s put on a show for the people that keep our club ticking and have a win. Let’s also make a huge effort to use our sponsors services and products and keep them happy so they can continue their fantastic on going sponsorship. The club sponsors are on the sponsors board in the club if your unsure. We also welcome Life Members and 200 Club Members to the game today and a meal tonight in the club as we induct 3 new members into the 200 Club. Leica (Jones)Sims, Haley (Nitschke) Dunn and Craig ( Burra) Chittleborough will be formally inducted tonight at 8pm ish. Seebohms Sports Store has always been a huge sponsor of the Millicent Football Netball Club and we sincerely thank Jo and Ian Seebohm for their marvelous contribution over many years. In September Donna and Chris Denton will take over the sports store and we wish them well in their new venture. Joe Pratt plays his 50th A grade game today, Jeremy Hales 299 Games (167 A/ 132 Res) Nathaniel Robbins 198 A grade games and if Johnny Facey keeps filling in he may also join the 200 club as he is currently on 196 (124 A / 72 Res) Neil Brown Our last game before the weeks break was against West at home. It was disgusting conditions to play in as it rained most of the day and even hailed just after lunch! Our little U/12s are improving each week; there is a lot of young talent on the court that will see a lot of success for the club in the future. The U/13s and U/15s both had wins and are also improving each week, hopefully they can both get another win this week against tough opponents. The U/17s had another loss, with more team consistency and 4 quarter efforts they should put up a good fight against east, who they narrowly lost to 3 weeks ago. The C & B grade girl suffered another loss each however both teams are training hard to record their first win for the season! The A res girls won a hard battle against west which puts them one game clear on top of the ladder and will be hoping to get another good win this week. The A graders had another convincing win and the younger players in the team are improving out of sight each week. Good luck to all grades. GO SAINTS!

“THE WESTERN”

Congratulations to great clubman George Beck on reaching his 150th game for the red and black during Easts trip to Casterton. The day started with the under 15’s getting the job done. Best players were Fraser Lynch, Phillip Penafiel, Brad Rathjen, Brandon Pitts, Blayke Mcmillan and Scott Brooksby. The under 17’s lost a few players during the course of the game and couldn’t peg back the difference. Best players were Jack Dawe, Nick Walters, Blake Rogers, Riley Janeway, Conor Llyod-Fox and Brady Biggs. The reserves held off a competitive opposition to record the points. Best players were Brad Creek, Matthew White, Flynn Balshaw, Brayden May, Steven Scheidl and Joseph Case. The seniors were able to hold their nerve and come away with the win. Best players were Jesse Fry, Matt Dempsey, skipper Chris Anderson (doing his best Travis Cloke impressions), old dog Simon Tulak and Todd Pfeiffer. This week we travel down to Millicent. Let’s get down there and keep the wins rolling! Last week East ventured over to Cat town and from most teams the Bulldogs managed to scare the pussycats away. A grade had a solid game, but couldn’t quite manage to get their first win going down by 10 goals. With team numbers down the girls played their best. Thank you to Caroline Davey who has filled in the last 2 weeks. A res had another tough defeat. These girls have talent, but with such a young team it’s been tough to play such strong dominate opposition. Keep strong girls, and push through these last few games. B grade made a killer come back to snatch the points and win by a goal. This helps their position on the ladder. C grade finally had a full team and managed to get another successful win. The 17’s played a better game against Casterton than the last time they met, continuing the winning streak once again. 15’s took control of the whole game and never let the Cats have a sniff of victory. So overall our weekend was quite triumphant. Today we travel over to Millicent for our last game out of the Mount. Some teams are facing the top sides, but we cant let them get on top of us, if we all just play as a team, and play with the bulldog fight, a win is never out of sight. Good luck everyone today
