“THE WESTERN”

FROM THE JUNGLE WEST v SOUTH

What a fantastic family atmosphere over at the Kennel last Saturday night with senior netty and football played under lights. Well done to everyone who supported this great concept, may there be many more to come. And congratulations to all those folk who contributed to the Indigenous Recognition Ceremony over at North last week. Another major milestone in the history of the Western Border this round when those in charge officially switch on those towering monoliths at Vansittart Park for the first time. The Phant snuck a sneak preview a couple of weeks back, and all I can say is the possums in the nearby gardens will be having a restless night. Last week the poor little Doggies took a pounding under the lights at McPark. Coach Carman must have been feeling like a cat on the curtains when he checked the fixture to see his troops having to back up against the Tigers this week. So who were the stars from Round 5? 1. Plenty of stars (donned in red and white) shining under the night skies over McDonald Park. But the brightest of all was Berky the Elder- so complete in every way, if he had been diving off the 10 metre board in Celebrity Splash it would have rated a perfect 10. 2. He left the WBFL a couple of years back with more questions than answers about where his footy was at, but Cat Chris Perry has returned a more mature team player. 3. Two veterans Nults and Fletty led the Demolition Job over the Saints at Vansittart Park.

The Roos didn’t have too much skip in their collective step after half time at Island Park last week.No Tom Holmes, and a strong rumour on the jungle lianas Josh Ransom might be making limited guest appearances this year. West have some outstanding quality in their ranks, but a genuine spark is missing at the moment. The Ds were ruthless against East, and put simply, at this point in time are bigger, faster, and probably a little better. South by 23 points

NORTH V EAST The East pups had been brave against all odds in the first four rounds, but they had their little tails hanging like pieces of limp spaghetti between their legs last week. Desperately need skipper Ando back, plus others from the leadership brigade such as Jake Dempsey and Jesse Fry. North probably faced their only genuine challenge of the year to date in the second term against Millicent last week, but then mercilessly flattened the gas pedal to both hold the opposition scoreless while adding a lazy 15 of the best themselves. Hate to say it, but the Doggies might be ducking and weaving faster than Eddie McGuire after trying to get a cheap laugh at the expense of Adam Goodes. North by 60 points

WORDS OF WISDOM “If Noah had been ‘Till next week... smart he would have The Phantom swatted those two flies”

ROUND 6 PREVIEWS

“The Western” is the official match day publication of the WBFL.

MILLICENT V CASTERTON Millicent had plenty of A Graders missing last week, but failing to score after half time was not a good look. The Saints desperately need Cam Haggett back to challenge the Casterton’s big man power of McKenzie, Michau, Macmichael and co. The Cats really are purring in 2013, and I reckon they can look forward to licking the cream again this week. Casterton by 20 points

Night Football

Courtesy: The Border Watch

Night football is here, and by the crowd numbers it looks to be a great success. Saturday night’s game between South and East was played before a large crowd, and while the result wasn’t close, the WBFL Executives must have been very happy with the night. Simon Berkefeld of South Gambier is fast becoming one of the WBFL finest players seen in recent years, while I missed Saturday night game all reports that his game was one of the best he has produced, which of his already high standard must have been a beauty. This week, North hosts East at Vansittart Park. If the weather stays dry we should get another good crowd. WBFL is very lucky to have two very good ovals which can cater for night football. It would be interesting to see other sports or leagues offer to transfer their games to one of these ovals, just imagine a night game between Glencoe and Port MacDonnell, a great showcase for the MSEFL. Let’s hope East can get the return of a few senior players, or this result could get ugly, North has showed no mercy in recent weeks, and look far too good for a undermanned East side Casterton’s form over the last couple of weeks has been very good , and you must congratulate their committee for their good work. Casterton more than most know the importance of drive in players and I believe it’s very important for these players to come into our League. The choice of players is most important as I believe if clubs can recruit good leaders and role models; it can only help our younger players. As long as clubs can keep the numbers to a minimum and also keep match payments to an acceptable level, then it certainly has my support. The number of lads we have lost to the big cities is staggering, either for study, work or life style. Our geographical disadvantage makes for a long journey for recruiting out of Adelaide or Melbourne very difficult, but if done well can be very rewarding for everyone. A last this South Australian Government is doing something right, gambling in sport is a huge concern to me. The Premier recently announced that they will stop gambling advertising in live sporting coverage. It is very sad when you see children selecting their footy tips on the selections and odds advertised by the betting agencies of each game, poker machines cause huge amounts of damage on our society and if these betting agencies are not reined in I can see the same happening again. Don’t worry, I love a punt on the horsies now and again, but the advertising from some of these betting firms are targeting the young and vulnerable. Let’s hope our state government keeps to their word and takes a strong stance. ‘Demps’

“THE WESTERN”

Sunday was the official opening of the bar and a good day was had by those who hung around to enjoy it. Badsy used the oldest excuse in the book for not being able to pour a good beer “keg must nearly be out” but the crowd let him slide with that out of respect. But back to the footy, the U15 boys are on fire at the moment and look headed for a finals berth. Best players R Hosking, J Lock, L Beckman, K Giddings, B VonDuve, J Gosling. The U17’s won again even though they did lose Aaron Von Stanke early and hopefully he is OK. Best Players J Coombe, L Bradley-Brown, B Stratman, M Walmsley-Pace. Again familiar names in the best and a lot of these young men stepped up and played in the Seniors – Thanks for the effort. The Ressies battled hard but would be disappointed with the result. Best Players M Koopman, A Schultz, M Weyers, C McKinnon , T King. If you can get back to the club to listen to the awards get a load of Schultzys presentation – V. Good. The young lads who stepped up into the senior side should be proud of themselves and their efforts, for most it was a first look at Senior footy but definitely not the last. That game of footy was at least entertaining and certainly “licked” anything thing that was on TV. Best Players in the seniors B Wilson, G Tucker, D Lloyd, D McElroy, R Fox, S Robson. Love the way Sam Robson goes about his job!! Next week will have an updated Coming Events List so keep an eye out for it. Macey. Last week we had our BIG trip over to Casterton, with the highlight of the day definitely the U12 girls win !! Unfortunately we had another lowlight with Gemma Davey going down in the A Grade game with a nasty knee injury, and also Georgia Ferguson from the 15’s also on crutches with an ankle injury. We wish Gem and Georgia all the best over the next few weeks..... We will have quite the support crew on the sidelines with Stacey and now Gemma and Georgia, also being joined by Maddy Wilson with her knee injury !! Speedy recovery girls. As mentioned in our club newsletter, we have recalculated all our club games, so will have quite a few milestones ticking over in the next few weeks – Stay Posted. Today we play host to South in the start of Round 2.. good luck to everyone and remember, awards and teas up in the club from 6pm – would be great to see a few more girls up to receive your weekly awards. Last week: A Gr: 47-48. Best: Lisa (Mr Clean Drycleaners), Rachael (Evolve Hair) | A Res: 43-46. Best: Linda (Evolve Hair), Charity (Subway) | B Gr: 5340. Best: Jacinta (Fasta Pasta), Hannah (Subway) | C Gr: 40-39. Best: Fiona (Evolve Hair/Metro), Deanne (Subway) | 17’s: 15-38. Best: Maddy (Hungry Jacks/VideoEzy), Bec (Subway) | 15’s: 21-31. Best: Olivia (Hungry Jacks/ VideoEzy), Georgia H (Subway) | 13’s: BYE | 12’s: 15-3. Best: Alyssa (Hungry Jacks/VideoEzy), Koesha (McDonalds)

Don’t forget that Malseed Cup is fast approaching – so please see Jac at the Bar or the Dent family to get your nomination forms in ASAP. A reminder too, that we have Buddy Night coming up on the 4th of June – where we will team up with our buddies for some fun and games, followed by a Sausage Sizzle for tea. This is usually a great night, with the “big” kids looking forward to it as much as the littlies. Congratulations to all those involved in the upgrade of the bar, it looks really good and with the facelift of the rest of the clubrooms the whole place looks great. Spread the word and if anyone has any functions get in contact with the club and book the room

“THE WESTERN”

Playing East at home is always a challenge and taking them on in a twilight round even more so, however South came away with three wins out of four games, with only the U15’s missing out, going down by two goals. The U17’s had an up and down game with East leading going into the last quarter. The boys fought back and kicked 5 goals in the last to take the match by 16 points. The Reserves had another hard game being held scoreless in the third quarter but still maintaining the lead. Again the boys had a last quarter surge to win by just under three goals. The Seniors had a challenge facing a team who were hungry for their first win of the season. South showed no pity towards them kicking 8 goals in the first quarter. This trend continued throughout the match and with a whopping 12 goals kicked in the final quarter, South secured the win by 131 points. Brett Exelby starred for the game kicking 8 and named best on ground, followed closely by Brad Cordy with 7 and Simon Berkefeld with 5. We are back at Malseed Park this week facing West. West have only won two games this year and will be looking for another notch in their belt to improve their position on the ladder. Go Demons! The A grade girls made history at the weekend when they won the first WBNA game programmed under lights. The girls did the club proud with a really solid victory with everyone getting the job done from the accurate shooting of Toni and Shell to the hard driving of Courtney, to the defensive efforts of Lisa, Yazi, Alyce and Alyssa. Supercoach Erica proved she was human after all as the B grade girls dropped their first game for 2013 but the disappointing loss has only fired the talented combination up. The 13U girls continue to impress as well with a massive win over East as Flick continues to develop these talented teenagers into the future stars of this club. And of course, drum roll please......... the A Res held on for a great win – their first of the season. New coach Sharon Adams can now breathe a sigh of relief. The girls set it up with a dominant first half before East came back but Kristie, Tash and Lori-Ann managed to create a turnover when needed just to settle the ship and Sharon’s strong driving and Emily’s good positioning and accurate finishing made sure the premiership points came their way.

“THE WESTERN”

Do you ever wonder what the world will be like in the future? It only seems like yesterday that Mum would prepare Meat and Veggies on the same chopping board then butter bread using the same knife and we never got food poisoning. Our lunches were put In Brown paper bags and kept in our non- air conditioned school rooms and I can’t remember getting E-Coli . Every family had 1 car and if you weren’t the oldest you mainly wore hand me downs. We all did P.E. no excuses and risked permanent injury in a pair of $2 Dunlop Volleys, not Air cushioned cross trainers with bells and whistles that cost as much as a small car. Yet I can’t recall anyone having injuries, but they must have happened as we are apparently much safer now? We got the Cane if we did something wrong, accepted the rules and treated people with respect. Everyone walked everywhere or rode their bikes rain, hail or shine and how come I wasn’t bored without a Playstation, X-Box, Ninetendo, Computer, Mobile Phone, IPod, Bluetooth, Pay TV with 29 Channels and a TV in every room but the toilet? We climbed tree’s, played british bulldog, brandy and made forts and if we got hurt or stuffed up we would get our butts kicked followed by a Dettol bath. Now it’s an ambulance trip followed by a court case to compensate Franks dislocated little toe because you never provided a safe environment? I don’t remember anyone having ADHD or a dysfunctional family, or needing Therapy or anyone being Intolerant to anything. When you began working you didn’t need an OH&S lecture and 2 hours to set up so called safety work place conditions to do a 10 minute job? Now there’s some things to reminisce about, life’s simplest pleasures are often the best. AAAAH those were the days! Neil Brown The rain cleared up and we had great weather conditions at North last week. It is great to see the wonderful space and three courts the North Gambier Netball Club now have and we look forward to our new courts being finished over the coming months. The U 12’s had great games with the B’s having a draw and the A’s narrowly going down for their first loss for the season. The 13’s had a great game with the match also ending in a draw! Both clubs have some talented Juniors which is promising for the future. The only other win for the day was the A Grade girls with our other teams having some great games but narrowly going down. The Junior Disco was a hit last Saturday night with the line-up out the door! Thanks to Tam, Leica, Kylie, Lynette and Husbands for the great job they did hosting the Disco! Today we welcome the Casterton Netball Club to McLaughlin Park and there will be a tent near the netball courts for you take shelter in! The tent is there in preparation for the Millicent & District Gala Day that the MPSI committee is hosting tomorrow. Thanks to all the girls and guys who have volunteered their time to help set-up, work in the canteen or make a slice/cake for the day. Your support is very much appreciated by the MPSI. Good luck to all teams today. GO SAINTS!

“THE WESTERN”

Some great results against West Gambier at home last week. The Seniors got off to a slow start but after an inspiring address by the coaching staff at the first break the Cats came out firing on all cylinders. The return of Adam McKenzie strengthened the team dramatically. Chris Perry was tenacious in the centre, Mark Cowland and Simon Sealey patrolled the backline, rebounding the ball constantly. Small men Brandon Currie, Alex Richardson and Tim Macmichael were excellent avenues of attack. Ricky Smith played his best game for the season relishing the opportunity up forward. Dylan Ayton kicked two vital goals late in the game to seal a Casterton victory. A good team effort. In the Reserves the experience of senior players combined with the exuberance of youth proved a good combination. Mick Jarrad played a great 4 quarters of football. Julian Schill took to the field for his first game and showed glimpse of his old form booting 4 goals and passing as many off. Jedd Clode and Matt Waters also scored three a piece whilst, Penfold, Milich and Sharpe rounded out the best with Schill and Jarrad. The Under 125 and 17 sides had 10 and 15 point losses despite giving their all. Johnson, Milichand Harrison were the best for the 15 whilst A. Cleary, J. Carlin, S. Bunnik, A. Robertson, F. Stark, C. Dawson were named best for the 17’s. Good Luck all. We had a successful day last week against West which was pleasing to see as West seniors have dominated our encounters over recent years. The A and A Reserve sides registered close and inspiring wins, C grade fell short by the smallest of margins, B grade faded away in the last 15 minutes whilst the 17’s and 15’s had very comfortable wins. The little kittens amaze everyone with their continued improvement. A: 48-47, Marni Perry – Hairwize, Haylee Rhook – Ladies Committee. A Res: 46-43, Katherine Jarrad – Glennys Takeaway, Trictia Cleary – Casterton Pharmacy. B: 40-53, Scarlett Jarrad – Milly’s, Ebony McIntosh – Herbert’s Bakery. C: 39-40, Caitlyn Jones – Dergholm Hotel, Rachel Stephens – Bloomers. 17U: 38-15, Claire Outtram – Mark Davis Cleaning, Liza Mutch – Spill the Beans. 15U: 3121, Teagan McIntosh – This’n’That, Hannah Waters – Kelpie Café. 12U: 3-15, Chelsea Galpin – Jim Tant, Maggie Craig – Faroe’s, Ebony Jarrad – Jim Tant. McNamara’s player of the day went to Haylee Rhook for her inspirational intercepts in the last quarter. Congratulations to Meg Clode, Allie Gorman, Emily Milich and Tori Perry who played their 100th games for the club last week. Also congratulations to Maya Gorman who played her 50th game. Today we make the journey to Millicent and let’s hope we bring home a few wins. GO CATS!

“THE WESTERN”

We welcome the opportunity to be part of history with the first senior game under the new lights at Vansitart Park, hopefully we will see continued good weather the same as last Saturday night. Looking to all teams having a ripping contest. Highlight coming up will be our reunion and past players & officials’ weekend held over two days the Friday the 12th and Saturday 13th July – celebrating premierships in the seniors the 73, 83 and in the reserves the 73 it was an tough ear of football and if the stories are true even tougher footballers. Most letters have gone out if you played in those teams make sure you contact your mates to make sure they got it and are coming along, early acceptances look like it will be a big weekend. Thanks to all the volunteers that continually put in week in and week out and continue to show their support. Club memberships number have continued to increase this year if you need a copy of the Bulldog packages don’t be afraid to contact Liz at the club or Peter Dwyer. Go doggies! The first third of the season is complete and each team has played each other once. Nice work 17’s and C grade who remain undefeated and looking pretty on top of their ladders. What a fantastic atmosphere with the night game against South. It’s great to see this happening, so keep supporting the league so we can see more of this happening. The A grade played a tough match, but after a not so great 3rd quarter the chance for their first win was out of reach. Keep going girls, a win will come soon. A Res were so close to their first win but went down by 5. Next time girls, and great work Lisa Murray as newly appointed coach. Grade played a magnificent game against the top side. Last time against North you went down by a goal, I’m sure you can change that this week. C grade started slow but finished strong. A big thanks to the juniors who played as we are still suffering injuries. 17’s played a blinder, fantastic effort girls. 15’s delivered another strong win and after drawing with North last time, I’m sure a win is on the cards. 13’s put up a tough fight against South, but couldn’t get the results. 12A and 12B both missed out on a win, but you all are developing your skills and improving week after week. Make sure you support these girls, because they are so gorgeous and try so hard. Let’s show North what East can really do this week girls…go doggies! - Bo Richards

AFL Kids First The AFL Kids First is a program for leagues and associations to guide parents so that both they and their children obtain the maximum benefit and enjoyment from their participation in junior football. Today’s parents have an important role in the delivery and support of sporting activities for their own and other children. With it comes a clear responsibility to act in a constructive and encouraging manner at all times. Barracking and wanting your child to perform well is human nature, but it’s critical this should be done in a responsible manner avoiding the ugly parent syndrome at all times. AFL Kids First includes recommendations for leagues, associations and their clubs to manage situations where parents become over-enthusiastic and risk having a negative impact on their children’s activities. The basic principles of AFL Kids First are to remind parents that: • Sport for children is a vital part of their growing up • Children like to win, but more importantly, they want to have fun • Parents need to set the right example at the sports ground, not just at home • Parents should be proud of their child’s efforts irrespective of the result • Sport is important to children’s self esteem AFL Kids First Manual The AFL has produced an operational manual for leagues, associations and clubs to drive these principles, remind parents of their responsibilities and outline appropriate procedures in the event problems arise. The manual includes: • The code of conduct appropriate to all parents • The education process for junior leagues and associations • The conduct of an information session • The appointment of a coordinator to manage process • The role and duties of the coordinator, parents, and administrators The AFL invests over $23 million annually in strategies that support the participation of 450,000 players throughout Australia. The continued growth and health of the game depends on junior programs and matches being conducted in a positive, encouraging and fun environment. AFL Kids First provides guidance for achieving this objective. 33

Footy Talk With Demps

Article Courtesy of The Border Watch

Chasing Eugene Warrior from the wing of Vansittart Oval in the 83 WBFL Grand final, watching him weave a couple of my team mates, with me still in hot pursuit he then decides to drop kick from 40 metres. A classic goal on Grand final day, and probably the last drop kick seen in WBFL, a example of the beautiful skills the indigenous Australians have brought to our great game. This Saturday the AFL celebrates Indigenous week with the Dream time game at the MCG between Richmond and Essendon, celebrating the contribution and achievement made by the indigenous players. Who would have thought that when Tom Wills in 1858 a former student of the rugby school and Cambridge created a set of football rules that would suit the natural skills of men of Aboriginal heritage. As a young lad I was treated to watching some of the all time greats, like Polly Farmer, Syd Jackson, Barry Cable and Maurice Rioli. Now the Hawthorne trio of Buddy,Burgoyne and Rioli set the big stage alight every weekend, but my favorite trio are the boys from Geelong, Steven Motlop, Mathew Stokes and Allen Christensen who all played their junior footy in Darwin. To describe in one word the way they play footy and work together is Magic. Allen Christensen has turned into a top mid fielder, his running and ball disposal has been one of the reasons Geelong sit 2nd of the ladder . Allen Christensen father Brendan was a top class country footballer and had a season with East Gambier in 1985, Brendan was clever rover and had a good year at East playing in the losing grand final to Portland and a squad member in the WBFL division 2 Victoria Country Champion Premiership team. Playing with and against the Aboriginal boys, I have seen some amazing feats, and the WBFL have had their fair share of talented players. The players that I really enjoyed watching include Michael Graham who won a WBFL league Medal playing for Penola and then went on to have a stellar career for Sturt in the SANFL. Gary Cooper who played for North in the early 80s was a classy tough on baller . Eugene Warrior made the game look easy playing at the end of his career for Millicent also in the early 80s, and David Wilson who played for East in the their premiership year in 1982, he was blessed with speed, balance and precision passing, which helped Robbie Lawson East’s full forward break goal kicking records in 1982. Bubba Tye recruited from Darwin in the late 70s to play for West was all class at his Jackson Five afro hair is well remembered. This week traditional rivals East and South battle it out at McDonald Park. These two working class football clubs have plenty of history, and when they play it brings out the best in both Players and supporters, these games draw good grounds and if it’s not entertaining on the oval the banter and wise cracks from both teams’ supporters will be entertaining enough. O’neil and Berkefeld are super talented and if not kept under wraps can destroy the opposition very quickly. From all reports South Coach Luke Duncan is a gun and he’s return from injury will give south a huge confidence boost. Povey, Balshaw and Eldridge have been the engine room for east, and if they can win the ball out of the middle, plus the return of senior players from injury , East could give south a bit of a scare. 36

MESSAGE FROM DONATELIFE SA Positive early signs for organ and tissue donation in 2013 Hello There, It’s great to be back supporting the Western Border Football League again in 2013! And it’s good to be able to report that in the first quarter of this year Australia’s official organ donor rates increased to record levels with 119 donors nationally – a 55 per cent increase on the same period in 2012. There were 14 donors in South Australia in the first three months of 2013. The nationwide increase means that 70 more people have benefited from a transplant in the first three months of this year, compared to the same time last year. In fact since 2009 heart transplants have increased by 22%, lung transplants have increased by 30% and kidney transplants have increased by 36 per cent. As of 3 December 2012, 1080 Australians were officially listed as waiting for a kidney. In a positive step the Australian Government has announced it will pay employees who wish to become living organ donors up to six weeks of salary, based on the minimum wage. The commitment of $1.3 million will fund a two-year trial of the initiative with outcomes to be reviewed in early 2015. Between 2006 and 2012, there was an average of 288 living organ donors each year. More than 600 people received a kidney transplant from a deceased donor in 2012. Family discussion on organ and tissue donation is one factor influencing consent rates and we continue to encourage Australians to talk about their wishes with their families. When families know the donation decision of a loved one, they are more likely to support donation proceeding. Currently, the majority (86%) of Australians surveyed would agree to donation if they knew their family member was willing to become an organ donor yet only 56% of people would agree to donation if the wishes of the deceased were unknown. During DonateLife Week earlier in the year we reached out to hundreds of people – providing information and answering questions about organ and tissue donation for transplantation and discussing how they could make their donation wish count. Find out more at www.donatelife. gov.au We wish everyone the best for the WBFL season. The DonateLife SA Team DonateLife SA staffed an information stand at the annual RAA Street Smart event held at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre which attracted around 4,000 students from metropolitan and regional areas.
