Texas Music Theater

This local landmark located on the historic square was built in 1942 and opened as the Texas Theater. The building was remodeled in 1958 as a state of the art movie theater with two screens and renamed the Holiday Theater. Most recently before this current renovation it was a live music hall and sometimes restaurant named Gordo’s. Over the years heaps of area residents and Texas State students ventured through the doors to be entertained. Now efforts to revitalize this historic structure will produce a new state of the art live entertainment venue called Texas Music Theater. With a standing room capacity approaching 1,000 this venue will be largest indoor dance floor in the area. Texas bands and national touring acts are expected to produce a flow of quality shows for both music and dancing entertainment. Cory Morrow will kick off this new venue in March.

The Second Coming of Fran! Nearing the 21st anniversary of his first round in San Marcos, Dennis Franchione returns to his rightful place as the Bobcat’s Head Coach. Fran began his history at TXST in December 1989. Franchione’s first test in the maroon & gold pitted him against upcoming WAC foe, the University of Idaho Vandals. In the first ever meeting between the two teams, the Bobcats lost a heartbreaker at home after the Vandals scored the last 17 points of the game in the fourth quarter and walk out of Bobcat Stadium with a 38-35 victory over the Bobcats in front of the 9,431 fans in attendance that day.

Bobcats kick off 2011 season at Texas Tech The Texas State Athletics Department announced on Jan. 29 that they have completed the 2011 football schedule. The schedule features six home games, two meetings with NCAA FBS Schools, and eight games against SLC teams. Season tickets are now available for purchase. “We are very excited that we have finalized our 2011 football schedule,” said Texas State athletic director Larry Teis. “Since our announcement to join the Western Athletic Conference in 2012, we have spent a great deal of time working on our future FBS schedules.

Movie Reviews

We like movies here at BobcatFans. A lot. We screen films in advance so we can give you a heads up. Truth be told we are movie junkies so we don’t mind doing you that little service. Plus we feature interviews with stars and filmmakers. Not a bad gig!

On the BobcatFans.com Forum; TXST’s Largest Message Board Topic: Chimy’s opening in San Marcos FromTxStWithLove: Not sure how no one posted about Chimy’s coming to the square. They have successful locations in Lubbock and Ft. Worth. Maybe I missed it. That being said, Chimy’s is great. Way better than waterdogs….if yall get a chance check it out, the margaritas are great. bleed gold: Waterdogs was absolutely awful--I’m surprised they lasted as long as they did. Definitely give Chimy’s a try. I ate at one in Lubbock when I was visiting a friend and was pretty impressed. I think it will do well. Dallas Bobcat: Great place. Besides Texas State joining the WAC and hiring Franchione, Chimy’s is the best thing that has happened to this university/city in a while. I’m not even kidding. San Marcos is a good college town with the potential to be a great college town. chrisattsu: They are displaying Bobcat pride between their mural and the stuffed Bobcat above the bar.

Benefits to getting WACked!

Rivalry with UTSA The burgeoning rivalry between the Bobcats and Roadrunners is heating up. Before the news of former head football coach Brad Wright’s dismissal, UTSA was moving to enlist the services of then TXST receiver’s coach Kevin Brown. Brown’s defection to UTSA was reported by BobcatFans.com the same day Coach Wright’s dismissal was reported. The previous year UTSA lured then Offensive Coordinator and TXST alumnus Travis Bush to coach the same position for the Roadrunners. With Franchione back at Texas State, perhaps the Bobcats should hire away one of their quality coaches. Too bad no one really comes to mind.

5. TXST gets some lovin from EA in NCAA Football games.

Construction Mania

Unless you’re an incurable shut-in, you’ve probably noticed the construction on campus. $100+ million worth of projects are either under construction or about to break ground. The new Performing Arts Center will replace the crumbling Falls Hall. The Comanche Hills Apartments will be demolished to make room for the offices of Housing and Residence Life. The old University Performing Arts Center is being cleared to make room for future housing and the Research Greenhouse at the corner of Lindsey and North St. plans will be ready for use later this semester. Construction continues on the Undergraduate Academic Center and the North Housing Complex. The much anticipated football stadium bowl expansion, now known as the Northside Complex, will nearly double seating capacity and is slated to begin in a matter of months. Campus is about to go from beautiful to drop dead gorgeous! Most projects expect to be complete by the end of 2012.

Short-Lived San Marcos has been harsh to many of the

restaurants that opened their doors in the last year. Some folded in less than three months. A cool paintjob and a lawsuit-avoiding name just won’t do the trick.

Piqasso The old Gattis Pizza building was painted black, opened for what seemed like a week, served a forgettable burger and the abruptly closed. Still has the snazzy paint job for the next entrepreneur to deal with.

Del Fuego Grill This location has been a veritable rotating door for would-be restaurantuers. Sadly for DF it had pretty tasty food. What seems to be its undoing is what looks to be very limited parking, like five spots. Spinners Pizza Pizza in a college town. You would think that’s a no brainer. Unfortunately, 15 different pizza joints in San Marvelous had the exact same idea. Jalapeno’s Bad business timing and low operating capital was not on the side of this mexican restaurant within a stone’s throw of the University. Opening its doors when school was letting out for summer didn’t help either.

Rick Koch & Steve Helsing

More than a sticker More than a fan Many Bobcat football fans may have seen these two initials during the 2010 football season but had no idea about their meaning. Here’s the story. The initials were placed on the helmets of the 2010 Bobcat football team in tribute to Garland Warren.

GW

Garland Warren wasn’t one of “us” in the beginning. He didn’t even attend Texas State University. He played football at the University of North Texas. He then played professional football in the CFL for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers under legendary coach Bud Grant, where he won four Grey Cups as a star linebacker. Following his playing days, he returned to Texas. Fellow UNT football alumnus Ben McCollum was living in San Marcos in the 60’s. According to McCollum, one day, he and a friend lost track of time playing golf and forgot to buy milk for their young kids. Unfortunately, there was only one grocery store in town and it closed at 6pm. “When Garland heard the story he picked up on that and called to ask if he could stay with me while he visited San Marcos”, Ben laughed. “He came to San Marcos because of milk!” McCollum’s story had spurred Garland’s imagination. “With money saved up from pro football and construction work, he purchased a piece of land on the corner of Hopkins and RR12 for $25,000,” McCollum continued. “Everybody in town thought he was crazy. No bank wanted to offer him a loan. He finally worked out a personal loan from a friend of a friend who lived in Martindale. That’s how he got the money to build his first Sac-N-Pac drive-thru grocery. When Garland did something, he did it full blast!” In his early days, Garland was a rough and tumble scrapper. As a savvy business man (SacN-Pac was only one of his many endeavors), it’s easy to see how an over-confident ego could develop. As he grew his businesses, Garland Warren became a very successful man financially. However, there were areas in his life that were still to be developed. One of the biggest forks in Garland Warren’s life came at the age of fifty when a friend invited him on a walk.

the “walk.” Becoming a “servant of all” and being rich in things other than money became paramount to Garland. His perspective and his life changed that weekend. Warren became a true part of the San Marcos community and, according to McCollum, he embraced it wholeheartedly. “Garland was the kind of guy who, if he made his money off a community, he wanted to give back to that community and that included Texas State.” People now talked about Garland with admiration because his actions spoke so highly of his character. “He did things for people I didn’t even know about,” according to Grace, his widow. “Garland’s priorities were God first, his children & grand children second and me third, which I didn’t mind… and Bobcat football is in there somewhere as well.”

To truly appreciate the impact Garland had on others, one need only witness what occurred at his funeral. One of the speakers asked those in attendance to stand if they went on a Walk to Emmaus because of Garland Warren. “People gasped when they saw how many people stood,” Grace fondly recalled. “Garland realized you’ve got to pay it forward.” Pay it forward he did! For the full version of the article go to BobcatFans.com (search Garland Warren)

Now, running Sac-n-Pac and his other businesses was how Garland Warren made his living. Sponsoring Walks to Emmaus and supporting the growth of Bobcat football were two of his favorite things to do. “He loved everything about the game of football and the Bobcats were the community team. He wanted it to be at the highest level”, said Grace. “He wouldn’t miss a game and rarely missed a practice. Every coach in San Marcos, Garland befriended!” Even as Garland’s health began to fail him, his desire to watch the team never wavered. Grace recalled, “Garland wanted me to take him to practice when it was 105 (degrees) outside. I told him if I did he needed to stay in the Suburban and watch from his seat. He was so sick he could barely walk. After he promised me he wouldn’t get out, he attempted to anyways. Practice stopped and the players and coaches came over, helped him out of the car and wheeled him over to the field.” Garland Warren passed away May 3rd, 2010. When he left to meet his maker, he left an indelible mark on San Marcos no one can replicate. Garland Warren’s fingerprints are all over this community he loved being a part of, and which, in the end, loved him back as well.

Garland was a church-going man, but maybe not keen on being too active a participant. For years he was asked to go on the Walk to Emmaus, a spiritual renewal weekend modeled after Christ’s servanthood. Every year, he would come up with excuses why he wouldn’t be able to attend that year. One day a friend wouldn’t take no for an answer and flat out told Warren he was going on that year’s walk with him. Garland complied.

A man with over 1500 people attending his funeral is an important man. But how is importance measured? Is it the size of your wallet? He was the proprietor of Sac-N-Pac, a chain of over 45 convenience stores that he built from the ground up. But richer men die every day that don’t receive the turnout he did. So what is it? How was Garland perceived? What did he leave behind? What did his life mean to others?

To say that weekend was a turning point for Garland Warren would be a gross understatement. While he had always been a man of faith this took him from the “talk” to

It comes down to respect. After all, people go to funerals to pay their respects. Some respected him because of his wealth, because he employed them, or because of his community

www.BobcatFans.com

stature. Mostly they respected Garland because they just liked who he was. That was the important element.

Get a Tighter Tummy in 10 days without Crunches or Sit-ups!

www.HHFitness.com

We all want a flat, sexy midsection. But for many, no amount of crunches or sit-ups seem to get the job done. I can’t tell you how often I hear the following question: “I do hundreds of crunches and sit-ups a day and I still have a flabby midsection. What gives?” Sound familiar? Don’t worry; we’re going to debunk the four lies and myths about attaining that killer core as well as 10 nutrition tips to follow for a Tighter Tummy in 10 Days.

Myth#1

Weight loss is the key to seeing ab gains WRONG! The real key to that flat tummy is decreasing you overall body fat and increasing you overall muscle!

Myth#2

Intense ab workouts burn off stomach fat WRONG! Spot reduction doesn’t work; total body, complex movements work best!

Myth#3

Crunches and sit-ups are the best exercises for your abs WRONG! Traditional ab workouts deliver ZERO results other than increased neck and back pain. Your spine is already flexed when standing and is in a flexed position throughout the day while at work, eating, and driving. Adding crunches and sit-ups increases the stress on your spine and is a good way to start looking like Quasimodo.

Myth#4

Long-duration cardio burns the fat covering your abs WRONG! Aerobic training is scientifically proven to burn ZERO additional body fat over dieting alone. “Interval Training” workouts are your best bet for quick weight loss and developing your core! These are the same workouts implemented at the HH Fitness Boot Camps (for more information visit www.HHFitness.com). www.BobcatFans.com

If you want a tighter tummy in time for Spring Break or a hot date, here are 10 nutritional tips to help maximize your weight loss.

1. No Dairy (yogurt, cheese, milk, ice cream) 2. No Flour Products (bread, bagels, crackers, cake, wraps) 3. No Alcohol 4. No Desserts or Candy (chocolate bars, ice cream, candy) 5. No Deli Meats or Processed Meats with Nitrites or Breading 6. No Diet Foods or Beverages 7. No Pre-packaged Microwave Meals or Snack Foods 8. No Meal Replacement Bars 9. No Foods with Artificial Colors or Flavors 10. No Soy or Soybean Oil The 10 nutrition rules combined with a total-body fat-blasting interval workout can help you drop at least half an inch from your waistline. Don’t have the time or patience to figure out what to eat or what exercises to perform? Take part in our Tighter Tummy in 10 Days program and get access to the 10-day done-for-you meal plan put together by top Registered Dietician Cassandra Forsythe (author of The Perfect Body Diet and The New Rules of Lifting for Women) to eliminate the guesswork of what to eat to quickly whittle your waistline. If you want access to a 10-day workout routine to whip you into the best shape of your life, nothing beats having a fitness professional tell you exactly what to do and push you to your fitness goals. Consider it done for the first 10 individuals who sign-up by February 22 for the next HH Fitness Tighter Tummy in 10 Days Program at www.TighterTummyin10Days.com

Head Coach Ty Harrington’s Bobcats are picked to finish 1st in conference by his peers for the second year in a row. The Bobcats go into the 2011 season as defending back-to-back SLC Champions, reason enough to grab a seat at the beautiful Bobcat ball park in San Marvelous. An indispensable key to this year’s success is the Bobcat’s junior third baseman from Coreyville, TX. Kyle Kubitza stuck his claws into the Bobcat rotation since joining the team in 2009, making 28 starts in his inaugural season. Apparently that wasn’t good enough for Mr. Kubitza. In 2010 he started all 60 games and for good reason. He puts up good numbers and is recognized by the Southland Conference being named to the All-SLC First Team.

zen yogurt

Not to bore you with numbers but this Hip-hop loving ball player tied the team lead with 11 homeruns, coupled with a club-leading 20 doubles and an astounding 60 runs scored. He finished the year with a .354 batting average, a .450 on base percentage and slugged .603 for the season. The bat, the bat, the bat is on fire! We don’t need no outs let the @*#!er hit! When asked about his goals for the season Kyle said, “I want us to win the conference tournament this season so we don’t worry about an at large bid. With the way the season ended last year I feel like we have something to prove.” Last season was rough on the club and fans when most experts projected TXST to get into the post season tournament only to find out that too many other conference upsets left no spot for them. The good news is that’s over and 2011 is a fresh start with unlimited possibilities. When you head out to tailgate and catch a game at the park on a warm sunny day keep an eye on # 39, also known as Kubby by this teammates. Chances are he and the rest of the Bobcat Bang Gang– yeah we meant to say that – will give you plenty of reason to stand and cheer this season. Get your hands up and Show’em State!

Team Nickname: Kubby Favorite Musical Artist: Sam Adams out of Boston. He’ll be big soon! Who are you looking to play most? My Brother (Austin) is a pitcher at Rice. I can’t wait play him. Facial hair preference: Goatee, but the team is asking for the Fu-Man-Chu. Fans: It’s a surreal feeling to play in front of a packed house. The team always talks about what an awesome home field advantage that is for us. Hangout of choice: The locker room is a awesome hangout. Two Xbox’s and flat screens with surround sound. Role Model: My Dad (Dan)– I miss him a lot. He was a great man that taught me so much about being a good person. Most memorial at bat? Playing A&M at home! I lead off at bat in extra innings and hit home run to tie up the game. We won from there. Favorite Quote? Never give anyone the opportunity to underestimate you! – (me, I think)
