PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

TAKING A LOOK BACK WHILE LOOKING FORWARD

Dear WBAI Members and Friends: Happy New Year! It is hard to believe that the halfway point of my term as WBAI President has now passed. As we enter into the new year, the WBAI continues full steam ahead, promoting new initiatives and opportunities for our members and planning exciting events for 2018. The WBAI Legally Mom’s group coordinated an afternoon luncheon on November 8, 2017, featuring well-known Chicago pediatrician Dr. Dan Weissbluth as guest speaker. Dr. Weissbluth discussed the subject for which is best known – sleep, teaching both expectant and current moms about laying the groundwork for creating healthy sleep habits for infants to toddlers. On November 16, 2017, our Community Outreach Committee hosted the Holiday Market Social, where attendees enjoyed festive holiday shopping and socializing while benefitting the local non-profit organization, After School Matters. Consistent with our theme of Making History Every Day, the WBAI’s Diversity Committee joined Lambda Legal and Charles Schwab on December 5, 2017, in welcoming Attorney Camilla Taylor. Along with the wine and networking receptions, attendees enjoyed a presentation and discussion of Camilla Taylor’s monumental work, including her successful argument in front of the United States Supreme Court that the fundamental right to marry is guaranteed to same-sex couples. On December 7, 2017, the WBAI Community Outreach Committee hosted the annual WBAI Holiday Gift Bag Party benefitting The Women’s Treatment Center (TWTC), a substance abuse treatment center providing comprehensive child care for mothers battling addiction. At the bag party, festive bags were made for the families of TWTC, with 100% of the donations contributing to the purchase of the gift bag items, including hats, gloves, scarves, toiletries, hosiery and desk supplies. Also on December 7, 2017, the WBAI teamed up with the Exclusive Professional Women’s Networking Group (EPWNG) to host Laurel Bellows, who discussed “The Discipline of Negotiating.” This dynamic presentation highlighted strategies for establishing goals, effective communication, reaching an agreement
