Name of Activity: Robotics Advisor: Ken Pashina, ken.pashina@wayzata.k12.mn.us Description of activity: Students research, design, fabricate, and test a robot that must meet the criteria established by the First Robotics competition. Where to go for more information: Ken Pashina, ETD. Length of season: Approximately six weeks to design, fabricate and test. The competition typically follows three weeks after the robot is shipped for storage before the competition. Meeting times: Monthly until build season. Typically after school and during weekends. Meeting site: High School ETD labs. Competitions: First Robotics Regional and possibly National competitions. Eligibility requirements: Meet the Wayzata School District and MSHSL Extra-Curricular Eligibility Requirements. Costs and/or needed equipment: Participation fee of $145 ($55/$90) to cover WHS participation fee and club fees. Students are responsible for transportation during the initial 6 weeks of designing, building, and testing. Name of Activity: Science Bowl Head coach: Amanda Laden, amanda.laden@wayzata.k12.mn.us Description of activity: A competitive event in which students are quizzed on multiple choice and short answer questions in the categories of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth, Energy, and Math. Where to go for more information: A406. www.bowl.mnmas.org Length of season: Mid-September to the end of January; post-season nationals at end of April. Meeting times: At least once a week after school for 1-2 hours. Meeting site: A406. Competitions: Round-robin practice tournament(s) during the season; State Tournament at end of January; Nationals in early May. Eligibility requirements: Interest in science. Meet the Wayzata School District Extra-Curricular Eligibility Requirements. Average number of members: 15-20. One to three teams. Costs: Participation fee is $55 to the WHS Activities Office. Awards criteria & type of awards: Top 3 teams are recognized at the State competition; top team wins trip to Nationals. Student leadership: Each 4-5 person team has a captain. Name of Activity: Science Olympiad Head coach: Clarice Hagen, clarice.hagen@wayzata.k12.mn.us; Jack Fariss, jack.fariss@wayzata.k12.mn.us Description of activity: An inter-school competition featuring science events in technology and all science disciplines (earth, physical, biological, and chemical science). Where to go for more information: A306. Length of season: October through March. Meeting times: Once a week from early October through mid-March. Meeting site: C305. Competitions: Three to four Saturday competitions (invitationals, regional and state) monthly from December through March. Eligibility requirements: Tryouts may occur, if necessary. Meet the Wayzata School District Extra-Curricular Eligibility Requirements. Average number of members: 15-20 for each team. Wayzata typically fields three to four teams. Costs: Participation fee is $55 to the WHS Activities Office. Awards criteria & type of awards: Lettering requirements determined by the head coach. Certificates of participation and ribbons or medals from matches. Student leadership: Usually two captains are selected by the team & coaches.
