This curated invitational exhibition includes a selection of cast art and objects building on the theme of our award-winning book, CAST: Art and Objects Made Using Humanity’s Most Transformational Process (Schiffer Publishing, 2017). This first-of-its-kind book reveals how the process of casting - forming a material into a mold - has transformed our world through its history and omnipresence. Casting is used to make everything from kitchen sinks to wedding rings, plastic toys to avant-garde sculpture, and coffee cups to chocolate Easter bunnies. One of our goals in writing CAST was to shine a light on the impact and transformative power of this versatile mold-based process across materials and applications.

The eighty-six artists in this exhibition all have work in CAST. Some are exhibiting pieces shown in the book and others are sharing new work or pieces we thought would fulfill an important role in the show. We wanted a wellrounded exhibition with works cast in traditional media such as metal, ceramics, and glass, but also in modern materials like plastic and rubber and utilizing cuttingedge technology like 3D printing. In addition to works by contemporary artists and craftspeople, this exhibition includes a sampling of historical objects as well as some everyday objects. The purpose of this show (like the book) is to encourage the audience to consider casting’s countless contributions to the world around us. Jen Townsend
