GREENWAY From Page 1 Solo and Team divisions. This isn’t a traditional road or trail race. There is no marked course to follow from start to finish. Instead, participants will receive a map and a set of coordinates and will use their own navigation skills to determine the best route between checkpoints. That means the answer to one of the most frequently asked questions—“How long will it take?”—is simple: it depends. Experienced navigators may plot an efficient route and move quickly from point to point. Those newer to map-and-compass navigation may spend a little more time deciding which way to go. Finding the route is part of the challenge and part of the fun. Participants may compete solo or as a team. Solo competitors must be at least 18 years old. Younger racers may participate on a team beginning at age 12, provided they are partnered with an adult age 18 or older. Teams must remain together throughout the competition, checking in together at each checkpoint and crossing the finish line together. The Full Gauntlet adds a paddling component to the adventure, taking advantage of one of the Greenway’s defining nat-

ural features—the Broad River. Participants may bring their own canoe or kayak. A limited number of canoes will also be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Racers who need a canoe should first complete their registration and payment and then email kduren@ broadrivergreenway. com to reserve one while supplies last. The event is designed to test outdoor skills rather than technology. Navigation will be accomplished using traditional map-and-compass skills, with GPS devices, smartphones, smartwatches, AI tools and other electronic navigation aids prohibited for navigation during the competition. Awards will be presented to the first-, second- and third-place finishers in both the Solo and Team divisions. There are no separate age categories—the challenge is the same: navigate well, make good decisions and get to the finish. Entry fees are $35 for solo competitors and $45 for teams, whether participants choose the Full Gauntlet or the Land Navigation Challenge. Greenway Gauntlet is an invitation to experience Broad River Greenway differently. The Greenway’s mixed hardwood forests, trail system and river corridor provide the setting, but participants decide how they move through it. Success

For experienced adventure racers, the Gauntlet offers a chance to put familiar skills to work in a new setting. For newcomers, it offers an accessible introduction to navigation-based competition without requiring specialized racing experience. Check-in begins at 9:00 a.m. on September 19 at the Broad River Greenway Ranger Station, 126 Broad River Drive, Shelby. The detailed event schedule will be announced prior to race day. Whether competitors choose the river-and-land Full Gauntlet or tackle navigation alone, one thing is certain: this isn’t a race where following the person ahead guarantees getting you where you need to go. Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ By Gary Miller The last time I mowed my grass, I think it had reached about 10 inches tall. It didn’t look that bad, but I had let it go. The time before that, I mowed but didn’t take time to weedeat. And the bushes around my house need a little shaping. A few of them need elimination. There are some holes in my yard as well. They have appeared where trees used to be - trees GARY MILLER that had been cut down. Now the roots have rotted and left some unwanted cavities that need to be filled. I had planned to clean the garage so I could get at least one car in there, but I put that off for another, more suitable time. The same goes for my storage shed. I have been meaning to do an extreme makeover on it for the last couple of years. Add shelves and hangers and replace the door. Maybe it will happen this year. Maybe not. The fence needs staining. It’s looking a little sun-parched. I need to replace a few boards as well. I’m not sure when I’ll get to that. And let’s not talk about the inside of my house. There’s enough there to keep me busy for months. Blinds hung. Doors painted. A few pieces of tile replaced where they have released their hold from my kitchen counter. Age and atrophy go hand in hand. And what goes for a house of brick and mortar goes also for a house of skin and bones. And that’s why I went fishing. CCC Participates in Rapid Response to Aid NEG Employees Cleveland Community College, as part of the Cleveland County NCWorks team, has been supporting the workers affected by the layoffs at Electric Glass Fiber America/ NEG as part of the state workforce system’s “Rapid Response” program. The company filed what is generally called a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice with the state on July 6, stating that approximately 282 employees were set to lose their jobs. That notice triggered planning for the response. This included organizing three Rapid Response events, on July 24, Aug. 7 and Aug. 12, with representatives participating from NCWorks, Cleveland Community College and the N.C. Department of Commerce’s Divisions of Workforce Solutions and Employment Security. At these events, workers learned more about resources and services that could help them through their career transition. NCWorks partners worked closely with officials from the company to organize the events, with the employer providing contacts for people who could speak to their workers about issues like insurance, 401(k) rollover and investment advice. Also as part of the response, the NCWorks team, including Foothills Workforce Development Board and economic development

partners, held a job fair on Aug. 6, with a total of 44 employers participating, in order to let the workers know about potential new job opportunities in the region. The state Division of Workforce Solutions deployed the NCWorks Mobile Career Center unit to support this job fair. The Cleveland County NCWorks Career Center continues to stand ready to help workers with finding new jobs and training opportunities. Those affected by the layoffs may be eligible for a federal resource called the Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act (WIOA) Dislocated Worker program, which can pay for certain types of training and other career services. Cleveland Community College offers shortterm job training programs that can help workers gain new skills and discover new career opportunities. Employers in these industries work closely with the College leading to employment for many students immediately after completion of a program. Back In Session It’s that time of year again. School is back in session! Students have returned to classrooms with backpacks, notebooks, pencils, DANYALE and hopefully, a willingness to PATTERSON learn. Teachers have prepared lessons, established classroom expectations, and given students instructions designed to help them succeed. However, even the best teacher cannot force a student to learn. The student must be willing to listen, follow directions, study, and put what has been taught into practice. The same is true in our walk with Christ. Class is always in session, and Jesus is the Teacher. Jesus gives us a beautiful invitation in Matthew 11:29 (NLT), “Let me teach you.” Think about that for a moment. The One who created us, knows everything about us, and knows exactly what lies ahead wants to teach us how to live. The question is not whether the Teacher is willing to

teach. The question is whether we are willing to be students. LISTEN & STUDY Good students learn to listen to the teacher. Matthew 11:15 (NLT) says, “Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!” There are so many voices competing for our attention. Social media, television, family, friends, coworkers, and even our own thoughts can become so loud that we fail to hear what Jesus is saying. Sometimes we need to quiet everything else and simply listen. Good students also study. Imagine trying to pass a class without ever opening the textbook. Yet, sometimes we try to live victorious Christian lives without consistently opening the bible. God’s Word teaches us his character, his promises, his expectations, and his ways. Sitting at the feet of Jesus requires intentionally making time to study the bible. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS Then comes the part some students do not like, following directions! Jesus did not teach his disciples simply so they could

Are we following his directions? Most importantly, are we putting what we have learned into practice? It doesn’t matter how long we have been a Christian, none of us has learned everything Jesus has to teach us. There is always another lesson in faith, forgiveness, love, patience, obedience, humility, or trust. So, grab your notebook, open the Word, and take your seat. The Teacher is ready to teach! Let’s Pray Lord, you are the greatest teacher of all time. Forgive me for trying to do things on my own, instead of getting instructions from you. Please lead and guide me in every area of my life.
