1:10 HOMEWORK Read Revelation 3:14-22. What was going good in the church in Laodicea?

WEEK 9: LAODICEA: REPENT! REVELATION 3:14-22

The Church in Laodicea COMMENDATION FROM JESUS: • None.

CRITICISM FROM JESUS: • You’re lukewarm and your works are repulsive. • You think you are rich and have become self-sufficient rather than God-dependent. • You are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. • You need to repent.

Jesus: “I stand at the door... I’m waiting... REPENT!!!”

What was wrong in the church in Laodicea? Read Colossians 1:15-20. That letter would have been read to the church in Laodicea as well (see Colossians 4:16). What parallels do you see between that passage and Jesus’ words to the church here? When Jesus says he will spit them out of his mouth in verse 16, it literally means they cause him to vomit. Why is he so repulsed by them? Read Matthew 19:16-30. Laodicea was incredibly weathly and selfsufficient. Why does Jesus say it’s so hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom? How is the Church in the west today similar to Laodicea? Read verse 17. What are some things we tend to say/think about ourselves that Jesus would correct? Read Proverbs 3:12 and Hebrews 12:3-11. What does verse 19 reveal about Jesus’ heart toward the church in Laodicea? How is this possible when he is also repulsed by them? (v. 16) Read verse 19. Pastor Josh said that this verse sums up the Christian life. Explain what he meant. Read verse 20. What is Jesus waiting to happen before he’ll come in to fellowship and enjoy intimacy with the church again?
