WEEK 8: PHILADELPHIA: TAKE HEART! REVELATION 3:7-13
The Church in Philadelphia COMMENDATION FROM JESUS: • I know your works, and I know you have little power and are weak... • You’ve kept my word and not denied me. • There’a an open door for you in the end, and I will rescue you. Be encouraged! • Hold fast, take heart, be encouraged, and keep enduring to the end!
CRITICISM FROM JESUS: • None!
Jesus: “Be encouraged, take heart, keep going, hold fast – there’s an open door! I’m coming soon!”
In your own words, sum up what Jesus was saying to the church in Philadelphia. Jesus mentions an open door for the church in Philadelphia. What’s he talking about? (See Acts 14:27) What is the significance of the crown Jesus mentions in 3:11? (See also 2 Tim. 4:8; James 1:12; 1 Peter 5:4; Rev. 2:10) Read Colossians 3:1-2; Philippians 3:12-16; Luke 9:62; Matthew 16:23. Where should our focus be? Why is this so important? When our focus shifts from the Gospel and the future hope we have in Jesus, what happens in our lives? What happens in our church? Should we repent when we don’t focus on that future hope? Read Matthew 10:22 and Hebrews 12:2-4. What is the key to enduring and pressing on? The church at Philadelphia was commended for keeping Christ’s word and for persevering in the face of trouble and hardship. What qualities do you think Christ might affirm in your life? How about the area of persevering in the midst of trial? How do you typically respond when times get tough? What needs to change?
