1:10 HOMEWORK Read Revelation 3:1-6. What was going good in the church in Sardis?

The Church in Sardis COMMENDATION FROM JESUS: • None... ouch.

CRITICISM FROM JESUS: • Wake up! You’re in a spiritual coma! • Your works are not complete. • Remember the Gospel and repent!

Jesus: “Wake Up! Remember the Gospel and Repent!”

In your own words, sum up what Jesus was saying to the church in Sardis. If something is alive, by its very nature it is always changing. Take kids for example. A 5 year old will change in 3-5 years. A 15 year old will be different in 10 years. A family with 2 kids will have to undergo a lot of change if they grow to 4 kids! Living things grow and change, dead things do not. It’s the same in the church. Why do so many churches resist growth and change? Might this have been part of the problem in Sardis? Read Matthew 21:18-19. Do you see any parallels between this and Jesus’ words to the church in Sardis?

The church in Sardis was known for being spirituall alive and vibrant, but in reality they were far from it. Can you think of ways in which your own reputation exceeds your true spiritual reality? What is the solution to this?

Read 1 Corinthians 15:33-34. Why does Paul tell the Corinthians to wake up? How might this compare to Sardis?

What do you think causes people and churches to slip into “spiritual comas”? How can you avoid it? How can your 1:10 avoid it? How can our church avoid it?
