Week 1 | June 3, 2012 Wawasee Community Bible Church Milford, Indiana Pastor Josh Weiland
Biblical Rest... The biblical word for rest is SABBATH.
HOMEWORK What is your reaction to the word and/or concept of “Sabbath”?
Read Exodus 20:1-21. According to this list, how important is practicing Sabbath to God?
You were DESIGNED for it.
The Seventh Day, God Rests 2 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. Genesis 2:1–3 (ESV)
God COMMANDS it.
What are some of the faulty ways you’ve tried to rest?
Sabbath is more than just TAKING A BREAK.
Outside of sleep, what are some things that provide rest for you? How have you successfully “rested”? Not just emptied yourself, but filled yourself. What restores you?
Read Matthew 11:28-30. Does your “rest” involve running to Jesus? Or simply running from something else?
True rest (sabbath) is JESUS.
Pastor Josh mentioned that Sabbath is about more than just taking time off. Why is simply taking time off, taking vacation, not really biblical rest?
Matthew 11:28-30 Hebrews 3-4
Read Hebrews 3-4. What does the writer of Hebrews teach us about rest?
