WAV E R L E Y B O O K S A D VA N C E I N F O R M AT I O N About this book This illustrated colour book is researched, drawn and written by artist Mark Mechan. Welly Boot Broth is about a dad and son working in the garden together to grow what they need to make a healthy, hearty broth. The story is set in present-day Scotland. Story Dad suggests that Elliot can help in the garden to grow what they need to make a big pot of broth. Elliot, (aided by his mum, big sister and brother), sets out enthusiastically to give his dad assistance – clad, of course, in his welly boots, just like a proper gardener.

But Elliot’s good intentions begin to go astray as his imagination takes over from garden duties. Digging in the back garden leads to finding all sort of ‘treasure’, and he is soon picturing himself as a Victorian Gent complete with watch chain, a Roman Centurion, and a Pictish warrior. Helping Dad build the raised beds, Elliot becomes a pirate walking the plank. Weeds? These are dinosaur food. As the shoots begin to grow, they have hopes and dreams for a bumper harvest. And when the beans begin to sprout, Elliot pictures himself climbing a giant beanstalk. Elliot discovers the nest of a field-mouse, and when Robert Burns is duly quoted, we realise that the best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men gang aft agley. As the garden flourishes, we discover that a variety of wildlife is just as interested in eating what is growing all around, as Elliot is. Perhaps this gardening project will not quite go according to plan … To protect his crops from being is being eaten by the local birds, mice and rabbits, Elliot bravely volunteers to stand guard overnight in his homemade tent. Armed with his torch and a flask of cocoa, he soon finds the spooky noises of the evening sending his imagination soaring again. The distant hooting owl, the cry of the fox, the hedgehog rustling in the undergrowth – even the fluttering bats – quickly see him run for safety indoors. However with the garden protected by nets and windmills to scare off crows, the crops recover a little. The family harvest what is left to make the soup, including tiny beetroot, some thin-looking leeks and some wonky-shaped carrots. “They’ll still taste nice, even if they’re a funny shape,” declares Dad. Instead of the huge pot of broth that Elliot had imagined, there is just enough to fill their smallest pot. Dad remains upbeat: “There’s plenty for the wee pot!” However the day is saved by their green-thumbed nextdoor neighbour who comes to the rescue with an armful of carrots and leeks from her own garden. The family then gets busy cleaning the vegetables, chopping and stirring. The big pot is needed after all … and Elliot sits down at last to enjoy his home-grown broth. Market for this book Adults and children will appreciate this simple story about a father and son enjoying time in the garden together with help from the family. This book will capture children’s imagination. It will encourage them to take an interest in the garden and to grow their own. Children will discover wildlife outside and be more aware of how food is grown. Wav e r l e y b o o k s a d va n c e i n f o r m at i o n about this book Tumshie is about a father and son making halloween lanterns and a costume together. The story is set in present-day scotland, inspired by how a scottish halloween used to be celebrated – back when halloween meant ‘guising’ (trick-or-treating), and ‘dooking’ (bobbing) for apples – and when carving out a ‘tumshie’ (turnip) lantern was a rite of passage for scottish children (needing the strength of an ox and the stubbornness of a donkey). This is an illustrated colour book, researched, drawn and written by artist mark mechan. in lowland scots, a tumshie is a turnip – which in scotland, is a swede, or a ‘neep’ – a root vegetable with orange flesh and a purple skin. story in a small town in scotland, dad and son elliot are walking home from school when elliot spots a skeleton decoration in a house window. halloween is just a few days away. title:

elliot loves halloween, so does his dad. They discuss what elliot’s costume will be this year – a robot? a tornado? a crocodile? every year they make elliot’s costume together. The pictures show elliot asking dad what halloween was like in his own childhood. back then (in the 1970s) trick-or-treating was called guising in scotland and dad explains how you had to earn your sweeties by ‘doing a turn’: reciting some poetry, singing a song, or telling a joke. before supermarkets catered for halloween, there were no ready-made costumes or treat bags to buy; everything was made at home. Ghosts were made from white sheets; ‘mummies’ were kids wrapped in toilet paper; and every form of cardboard tube and empty egg box was used to make a costume. The story continues with a nostalgic dad explaining that when he was a boy sweets were a special treat and a bag of monkey nuts and a tangerine was an exciting surprise. Families held halloween parties with people dooking for apples, and biting treacle scones on a string. and in those days a halloween jack-o’-lantern was not a huge bright-orange pumpkin but a small and very tough scottish turnip – also known as a tumshie. as dad warns elliot: “carving out a tumshie takes strength, willpower, knives, spoons … sometimes even dynamite.” The pair carve out their lanterns together – a pumpkin for elliot and a tumshie for dad. We see the pair make a new costume for elliot – a crocodile made from cardboard painted khaki, elliot’s old bicycle helmet, green wellie boots, string, and ping pong balls for eyes. When the time comes to go out guising, in all the excitement, the tumshie lantern is almost forgotten. elliot remembers though – and the lantern is the finishing touch needed for his costume. after halloween, the family normally put the lanterns in the garden. but elliot feels sorry for his tumshie and is looking forward to bonfire night (5th november), and lights up the lantern again so his tumshie can watch the fireworks. market for this book: 1. adults and children will appreciate this simple story about a father and son enjoying time together and featuring forgotten traditions meeting new ones. The book will appeal particularly to those who grew up in the sixties, seventies and eighties who will recognise memories of simpler times. 2. Will appeal to tourists who appreciate scottish customs. about the author and artist: mark mechan is an illustrator and graphic designer who studied at dundee’s duncan of Jordanstone college of art and design. mark, as red axe design, has worked in publishing as a graphic designer for over twenty years, designing for publications as varied as Scottish social history and literary fiction. this book is his first published writing and was inspired by Halloween nights over the years with his own kids.

Wav e r l e y B o o k s a d va n c e i n f o r m at i o n about this book: Feline stressed? Would you like a cat-alyst to purrfect peace in your life? Ever watched enviously as your furry friend finds a ray of sunlight and stretches out on it – on your bed – as you rush to catch the bus? Follow these gentle, zen-like musings, interpreted from the moggie’s mews, and maybe you too can achieve catitude. Meowditation is a whimsical collection of thoughts that will help you – cat-style – to appreciate those peaceful moments amid the chaos and stress of working and domestic life. Because it is no coincidence that your cat has decided to sleep on your keyboard, or your tax return, or ‘that’ report that should have been finished last week. They’re saying, ‘Pay me attention and why not get me some food while you’re at it...’ but also they’re saying, ‘Find the stillness within the detail, amid the tumult, of your hectic life. Take some time to be you.’ Probably. This is a cat’s guide to taking the sweet path to tranquility, an arcadian wander to beat anxiety and to being mindful. Or at least a chance to smell the catnip, take a lint roller to your hairy trousers and to try some Meowditation. TiTle:

MeoWdiTaTion a Cat’s Guide to Mindfulness and Pawsitivity Author: Eleanor Abraham ISBN: 978-1-84934-530-9 Publication: March 12, 2020 Available February 2, 2020 Format: Paperback Colour: B&W, with 45 illustrations TPS: 147 × 103 mm Extent: 96 pp Price: £5.99 Genre: Humour / Mindfulness / Cats / Health and Meditation

Eleanor Abraham is the author/scribe to whom this book was dictated by her cats. Eleanor is a writer and an editor, and she has two cats called Saorsa and Georgie, and several hundred lint rollers. She is married to the Bearded One, who features in the book also. Meowditation is illustrated by Mark Mechan. Routine There is a universal order to everything in the world and this is it: wake up, run about a bit, eat, clean yourself, sleep. I do this several times a day. I feel it is the responsibility of all cats, to encourage order and routine upon skittish, unpredictable humans. I help the humans start the day, for example, by jumping from the wardrobe onto their bed or stomach to wake them up and then by shouting helpfully in their ear to alert them that it is time for my breakfast, in case they forgot. They rely on me for this invigorating welcome to the day. Routine gives comfort and structure. When your routine is disrupted, such as if a strange-smelling stranger comes to fix the boiler, following your other routines – such as eating and then nervously washing your tummy – can soothe the nerves.

Cleaning I maintain extreme focus when grooming. I do not wish to be petted when I am washing my tum-tum. I am a nice cat though. I will give you a little lick to remind you of how dirty and smelly and weird you are, daring to touch my nice clean fluffy tummy with your grubby hands that smell of hair gel or peanut butter. Colleagues of mine will bite you if you interrupt this most sacred of ceremonies and, while I abhor violence, I sympathise. Focus on the cleaning alone. No other thoughts are necessary. You may stop to chew upon a little tangly bit or a raggedy claw, but all the concentration of thought is on the bit you’re cleaning, and then possibly the next bit you’re cleaning, and then possibly “how on earth do I reach my bum since I put on weight?” No, no! Cast all other thoughts away as soon as you experience them. Be pawsitive. You will reach your bum!

Think Inside Your Box All those self-help guides telling you to think outside of the box? Meh-eow. There’s nothing nicer than getting into a lovely cardboard box to have a nice peaceful think. Doesn’t matter if it’s a little small. Boxes are beautiful things and they must be sat in and appreciated. The texture, the smell (what was in it before?), the dark, the lovely feeling of being enclosed on all sides. Irresistible. When I’m in the box there’s just me and the box; and my thoughts are about the box; also I might chew the box.

The first edition was published in 1986 and written by Wallace Milroy with Neil Wilson. Back in the 1960s and 70s, Wallace Milroy and his brother Jack introduced malt whisky to London from their Soho Wine Market. Neil Wilson persuaded Wallace to create a beginner’s guide to single bottled malts and together they conceived The Malt Whisky Almanac. It went on to sell over 300,000 copies.

The book deals with the lighter and quirkier sides of whisky-making, whisky consumption, whisky over-consumption, whisky in literature, whisky and the law, and even whisky and death. A selection of leading whisky industry personalities have contributed their favourite humorous stories concerning ‘the cratur’, and the text is augmented by a series of historic Punch cartoons and modern cartoons in a wide variety of styles. Some sample entries concerning foreign countries and whisky include: many nations have tried to copy Scotch and Irish whisk(e)y, and none more determinedly than the Japanese. one English-born former Tokyo resident recalled being asked in the 1920s by a local whisky distiller to come up with a label which would lull drinkers into believing that they were getting genuine Scotch. He suggested ‘Guaranteed bottled in Buckingham Palace under the personal supervision of His Majesty the King.’ The labels were duly printed and the whisky went on sale. Stories are told of early Japanese whiskies with names such as ‘King Anne’, but a personal favourite concerns a whisky produced in Ecuador. one can only conjecture about the origins of the name, and speculate that perhaps a disgruntled expatriate Scotsman was asked to help choose something suitable. The whisky is marketed as ‘Auld Piss.’

There have been whisky maps before, but this new map is the best available. In full colour (with a wealth of distillery information on the reverse) the map gives a full view of the whisky-producing regions of Scotland. The regional boundaries of these have been redrawn in an attempt to simplify this aspect of the industry. James McEwan’s unique notes are incorporated on the reverse, along with a distillery directory, website addresses, cooperage notes, cask information, Landranger oS map references and some interesting distillery terms. The map shows distilleries that have visitor facilities, with their details on the rear of the map. So if your interest is purely academic, or that of an enthusiast and whisky lover, this new map will be essential for your bookshelf or library wall. titLe:

Wav e r l e y B o o k s a d va n c e i n f o r m at i o n Robert Burns came to Edinburgh in November 1786 and stayed for 14 months. His plan had been to emigrate to Jamaica, but on 31st July 1786, his book, Poems Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect, went on sale and was an immediate success, earning him enough for his trip to Jamaica, however Burns was suddenly a successful writer who was being spoken of the length and breadth of Scotland and his plans were about to change with one message from Edinburgh. Dr. Thomas Blacklock, known as the Blind Poet, came to know of the book. Blacklock’s poetry was much respected and he was acquainted with such famous figures as Dr. Samuel Johnson and his biographer James Boswell, as well as the philosopher David Hume and one of the most famous Americans, Benjamin Franklin. Blacklock advised Burns to journey to Edinburgh where a second, larger, edition could be published. He was sure it would have a more universal circulation than “anything else that had been published within his memory”. Burns already had new material. So it was that on 27th November 1786 that Robert Burns, on a borrowed pony, set off on the two day trip to Edinburgh. The Scottish Enlightenment was rampant. Edinburgh at the time was home to great philosophers, economists, engineers, scientists, writers and poets and enterprise and industry were flourishing.

Blacklock was a Southsider and it followed that Burns would be entertained in many houses in George Square, Buccleuch Street, Nicolson Street and nearby. The plaque on the wall on the North-west corner at Potterrow and Marshall Street commemorates the most romantic and dramatic episode of Burns’ life: Clarinda – Mrs Nancy McLehose – and, nearby, a unique event in literary history took place when Robert Burns met a young Walter Scott in Adam Ferguson’s house, in Sciennes. Robert Burns left Edinburgh on March 24, 1788. He was only 29. He was to die in Dumfries eight years later at the age of 37. about this book: This illustrated guide, with locator maps and suggested walking routes, traces Burns’ time in Edinburgh – the places he went to, which you can still see today – and the people he met. The Old Town Tour covers locations from the Grassmarket to the north side of Princes Street, the Burns Monument to the east and to Greyfriars Kirkyard to the south of The Old Town. The Southside Tour reveals the affection that Burns had for this part of Edinburgh. During the research that went in to this book – and connected with it – was the discovery of a previously unknown portrait of Robert Burns by Alexander Nasmyth now known as ‘The Shaw Burns’ and that story is told in this guide.

Kidnapped is set in 1751, during the time of the Jacobite rebellion – a tumultuous and tragic period in Scottish history. When David Balfour sets out to find his uncle, he never dreamed his path would lead to such exploits – that he would discover that a fortune was rightfully his – that he would narrowly escape being murdered – that he would be kidnapped, but saved from a life of slavery – and thrown from one escapade to another in the company of the fugitive masterful swordsman Alan Breck Stewart. They meet on the brig Covenant just before they are shipwrecked off the coast of Scotland. After witnessing the murder of Colin Campbell (the notorious ‘Red Fox’) David makes a dramatic and extraordinary flight for his life across Scotland before he can claim his rightful inheritance.

“Beautiful pages – really classical stuff – Cam is having a ball with this book.” – Thierry Mornet, DELCOURT, France “This looks GREAT! Thank you so much for sharing this opportunity with us...” – Anita Nelson, DARK HORSE USA “A stunning adaptation of the master storyteller’s work by Grant and Kennedy, present day masters of their respective crafts – both will be pleased with this – absolutely superb!” – David Donaldson, former Managing Editor, DC Thomson & Co Ltd

Wav e r l e y B o o k s a d va n c e i n f o r m at i o n about this book: This graphic novel is an interpretation of the Robert Louis Stevenson classic from the creative comic books ‘dream team’ of Cam Kennedy and Alan Grant, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Good and evil, right and wrong, joy and despair are seen through the eyes of John Utterson, a lawyer and friend of the scientist, Dr Henry Jekyll. After relating the alarming account of an angry man assaulting and trampling a small girl ‘like some damned juggernaut’, he begins to investigate the odd behaviour of his friend. As he probes further he uncovers a terrifying and horrific story. Ideal for schools, the text and story are faithful to Stevenson’s original novella. about the authors: Robert Louis Stevenson already has huge appeal – this interpretation spans the pre-teens, teens and graphic novel markets.

WAV E R L E Y B O O K S B O O K I N F O R M AT I O N The Cattle Raid Of Cooley Conor Mac Neasa ruled Ulster and Queen Maeve and her husband Ailill ruled over Connacht, and they boasted of their wealth. Ailill boasted he had a great white bull. Meave was jealous. Was there any bull in Ireland that could equal Ailill’s bull? “There’s not one as good but one twice as good –called the Brown Bull of Cooley”. Maeve sent messengers asking for a loan of the bull. The offer was agreed to by Daire, the owner. Some said - “Daire was a wise man for giving the bull to Meave, for if he hadn’t she would of taken it by force”. Daire was furious “If she wants my bull she must take it by force”. When Queen Meave heard she was angry. She gathered her fighting men, and so began the cattle raid of Cooley. Brian Boru More than a thousand years ago, during the Viking Age, an extraordinary young man was born in Ireland. His people, plagued by warfare, were weary not only from the Vikings' brutal raids along the coast, but also from the continuous warring among local chieftains. This is the story of Brian Boru, who as a young man took it upon himself to revolutionize tenth-century Ireland, striving to create a peaceful land where his fellow Irish men and women could be safe from harm. Brian, crowned High King, restored peace and fostered prosperity in the country that was his home.

The Pirate Queen Against the backdrop of Ireland and England from 1544 to 1588, the story tracks Grace O'Malley's career from girlhood to middle age, The daughter of a chieftain and merchantman–cum–pirate, Grace takes up her father's trade and commands a merchant fleet by age 30. An astute trader, ruthless pirate and Irish patriot, she plunders the ships of the Dutch, French, Spanish and Turks—and with particular relish the oppressive English.

Children Of The Great Hunger In any sustained period of food hunger and famine, children are one of the most vulnerable groups in terms of disease and mortality. The Great Hunger that occurred in Ireland between 1845 and 1852 is no exception. How did children experience--and survive--the tragedy that unfolded in Ireland between 1845 and 1852? Children and the Great takes a step towards an understanding of the Great Hunger.

Ghosts provides an entertaining and enlightening introduction to the world of poltergeists, phantoms, ghouls and spectres. Be prepared to be fascinated and disturbed by the tales of people who have experienced unnerving and sometimes terrifying exposure to the spirits of those who have died but cannot rest. As well as an introduction to the various forms of paranormal activity encountered by many people over the years, this book contains descriptions of ghostly or mysterious encounters experienced by people as varied as Carol Jung and Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands. The many chilling accounts detailed here include paranormal experiences that convinced even the most sceptical of witnesses that there is ‘life’ beyond the grave. These sightings and hauntings from all over the world involve tales of spirits attached to places and people, ghosts with a message or a warning, malevolent phantoms, ghostly animals and many more. They are not works of fiction, but as is the nature of supernatural occurrences – and of stories passed from generation to generation – neither can they be easily proven. Decide for yourself. Are these terrifying tales the products of over-fertile imaginations or the wish to spin an entertaining yarn, or are they genuine heart-stopping encounters where this life meets the next.

Sherlock Holmes is the best loved creation of the Scottish writer of detective stories and historical romances, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 to 1930), who studied medicine in Edinburgh. Doyle's general practice in Southsea failed and after a stint as a oculist in London, which also failed to relieve his poverty, he took to writing fiction. The detective stories featuring Holmes and his friend Dr John Watson have changed the way modern crime writers approach detective fiction. Sherlock Holmes was so loved by readers that when Doyle, tiring of the popular character, killed him off, there was such national dismay that he had to be brought back to life in 1903. Although Doyle wrote several other novels none provoked the same degree of fondness or fanaticism with the public and these have generally been underrated. The popularity of Sherlock Holmes has never waned.

About the author Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle KStJ DL (22 May 1859 – 7 July 1930) was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction. Doyle was a prolific writer; other than Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the Mary Celeste. PUBLISHED BY WAVERLEY BOOKS

The Complete Works of Oscar Wilde Format: Paperback Colour: B&W, TPS: 273 x 198 mm Extent: 384 pp Price: £9.99 Genre: Literature / Poetry

The Dublin-born dramatist, poet and novelist Oscar Fingal O’Flaherie Wills Wilde (1854 to 1900) was as unconventional as he was brilliant. He studied at Trinity College Dublin and at Magdalen College Oxford and here displayed an outstanding mind, a sharp wit and a contempt for conformity. He became an advocate of the doctrine of art for art’s sake and courted controversy with his flamboyant and decadent public image. In this book are collected Oscar Wilde's complete stories, poems and plays, his only novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, and also a selection of his essays including an extract from ‘De Profundus’. His works are imbued by his aesthetic, symbolist philosophy as well as wit, pathos and sublime wordplay, perhaps best exemplified by his masterpiece, the play The Importance Of Being Earnest, and the essay in the form of a dialogue, ‘The Decay Of Lying’. His ambiguous sexuality and dandyish appearance attracted attention but not always positive attention. His conviction and imprisonment for homosexuality was the beginning of a slow physical decline which eventually brought about his death in 1900. Wilde left behind him a remarkable body of work and the enduring memory of an exceptionally charismatic and talented man.

WAV E R L E Y B O O K S B O O K I N F O R M AT I O N The Irish Writers series is a collection of pocket biographies of the lives of some of the remarkable people who have given Ireland its rich cultural heritage.

James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (1882–1941), Irish novelist, short-story writer and poet, is regarded as one of the greatest, most innovative literary talents of the twentieth century. Joyce revolutionized the structure of the modern novel. His seminal work, Ulysses (1922) was heralded as genius by some but deemed obscene by others. In Finnegan’s Wake (1939), he stretched language to its very limits, in an extremely difficult style which still never lost sight of comedy and lyricism. This biography by the author David Pritchard, is a frank and accessible presentation of the life and work of an unconventional man and writer, who left a legacy that has shaped the novel as we know it. William Butler Yeats (1865–1939) is considered to be one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century. A Symbolist, his poetry drew imagery from Celtic legend, from politics, from mysticism, and from his life, particularly his unrequited love for the revolutionary Maude Gonne. Largely responsible for founding Dublin’s Abbey Theatre, Yeats wrote several fine plays that were performed there. He was made a senator of the Irish Free State in 1922 and received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. Author David Ross is a Scottish publisher and writer of numerous books on history and culture. This engaging and accessible biography of W.B. Yeats deftly captures the spirit of the man and his work, relationships and beliefs. George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950) was a prolific dramatist, critic, essayist, pamphleteer and social reformer. The shy, idealistic Irishman separated himself from his opinionated public persona, ‘G.B.S.’, and his eccentric alter ego and his work were the vehicles for his social and political ideals. Plays, such as Arms and the Man, Man and Superman, Major Barbara, Pygmalion and St Joan, his essays and letters, his outspoken opinions, great wit and charisma, made him a celebrity. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925. Author David Ross is a Scottish publisher and writer of numerous books on history and culture. This is an insightful and entertaining biography of Shaw conveying the life, wit and prolific achievements of an Irish icon. Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde (1854–1900), the Dublin-born dramatist, essayist, poet and novelist, was as unconventional as he was brilliant. He displayed an outstanding mind, a sharp wit and a contempt for conformity. An advocate of the doctrine of art for art’s sake, he courted controversy with his flamboyant public image. His works are imbued by his aesthetic, symbolist philosophy; as well as by wit, pathos and wordplay. Wilde has left behind him a remarkable body of work and his influence in literature and the arts has been immense. Author David Pritchard has written a highly readable, frank and sympathetic biography of the cultural and literary legacy of one of the most brilliant intellects, of the nineteenth century. g e d d e s & g r o s s e t a d va n c e i n f o r m at i o n About this book: Life can be a double-edged sword. There is the sharp reality that life can be filled with many difficult choices that can overwhelm us. On the flip side, there is the thrill that we have more opportunity than ever before to change things. But sometimes we struggle to make decisions. Sometimes we spend time listening to the negative side of our brain, and find it hard to stop doubting everything. Mindfulness, as a technique practised regularly, is one way to gently break the cycle of doubt that we subject ourselves to. Instead we can learn to adopt more positive ways of thinking so we can learn how to grow from negative experiences and use them to our benefit. Positive thinking goes hand in hand with positive experiences, and we can guide ourselves into wellness. This book gives practical advice on where doubt comes from, its effects and how to banish it. Dr David Fong is a clinical psychologist and in this book gives practical examples of how to use mindfulness techniques to step gently towards more positive thinking, and planning a healthier path ahead. Written also by Kate Wilson. What is mindfulness?

g e d d e s & g r o s s e t a d va n c e i n f o r m at i o n About this book: Looking good, and feeling great, is within the reach of most people as long as they have right products, diet, attitude and discipline. Beauty is no longer something possessed by a blessed few. Modern beauty products mean that improving your looks is nothing like the chore it used to be, and few things put a spring in your step like knowing that you look well-groomed, glowing with health and dressed to impress. Many thousands of people have had surgical procedures to enhance their breasts, lift sagging skin and tired-looking features, and subsequently report increased happiness and confidence. But it might not even be necessary to go that far – the answer to a fresher face and more confident outlook could be in your beauty or hairdressing salon, bathroom cabinet, wardrobe or even your fridge! And sometimes the answer is in your head! Confidence starts in the mind. This book gives practical advice on how to make the best of the way you look – face, hair and body – whatever your budget. g e d d e s & g r o s s e t a d va n c e i n f o r m at i o n About this book: Phobia is characterised by an overwhelming fear or dread of certain objects, animals, events or situations. It can cause severe restriction of everyday activities and, at its worst, intense misery and suffering for the phobic person. In spite of the fact that the experience of phobia is commonplace, phobics themselves frequently go to great lengths to hide the existence of their condition and do not seek treatment that would be helpful to them. The message of this book, Understanding Phobias, is that there is a great deal that can be done to relieve the phobia sufferer, ranging from self-help measures and alternative therapies to psychotherapeutic treatment programmes. In the 21st century, there should no longer be any need for phobia victims to endure the miseries of this condition on their own.

We’ve all heard of diabetes but what does the average person know about it? With growing numbers diagnosed with it, and untold others suffering from it without knowing, it’s important to be informed about this common condition. Diabetes affects the body’s ability to process the sugar (or glucose) that we get from the food we eat. This is caused by a problem in the body’s production and use of a hormone called insulin. There are two kinds of diabetes: type 1, where the body cannot produce insulin, and type 2, where the body does not produce enough or becomes resistant to insulin. Both types can cause serious health problems, however, with medication and careful attention to lifestyle, people with diabetes can lead normal, healthy, active lives. For anyone suffering from diabetes – or for those who feel they may be at risk of developing it – it is important to become informed about the condition. This book aims to present an overview of the many aspects of this complex disorder, to help increase understanding. Covering symptoms and treatments, as well as dietary and lifestyle recommendations, this is an invaluable introduction to living with diabetes. titLe:

Great advances have been made in medicine and science in recent years and there is no doubt that these advances have made, and will continue to make, an enormous difference to people’s health and quality of life. However, there has also been a growing realisation that medicine does not have all the answers. When it comes to a healthy lifestyle, there is universal agreement among nutritionists, doctors and scientists about the importance of diet in both the incidence and prevention of disease. Healing Foods looks at the health-enhancing and healing properties of a wide range of foods, helping to explain why these should be included in our daily diet. Individual entries contain a description of the food in question, its essential properties and health benefits, advice on how much should be eaten and cooking methods where appropriate. This excellent reference book allows anyone interested in their health and well-being to make informed decisions on what foods to include in their diet.

Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, but his reputation did not rise to its present heights until the nineteenth century. In his works you will find tragedy, comedy, history, romance, fantasy, horror and a vast range of human experience that is still poignant in modern times. The Romantics, in particular, acclaimed Shakespeare’s genius, and the Victorians worshipped him. In the twentieth century, his work was repeatedly adopted and rediscovered by new movements in scholarship and performance. Today, his plays remain extremely popular and are continually studied, performed and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world. Bestseller – over 100,000 sold

Wav e r l e y B o o k s a d va n c e i n f o r m at i o n This book is not just funny (or sad) stories of campervan trips in Scotland; it is not just ‘Zen and the art of campervan maintenance’ (with stories of sweetness and light that will entertain or make you cry); and it is not just nature writing (with observations of wildlife in the western Scottish Highlands). But if you enjoy reading about how books are written and about recovery stories from relationship breakdowns, and if you like reading about women travelling alone and all the things that can go wrong (and right), about strategies for facing fear, dealing with creepy crawlies and noises in the night, and about surviving all that life throws at you (especially when you are over a certain age), then you will probably enjoy this book. Writing on the Road is by Sue Reid Sexton, who, while writing two novels (Mavis’s Shoe and Rue End Street) over the past six years, needed to escape from her hectic household to create some space in her life to write them. As the mother of two and a step-mum of four, Sue realised her only real option was to get into her campervan and have it function as a mobile office. Whether she camped by a beach overlooking the Atlantic in the Kintyre peninsula with buzzards, golden eagles, deer, seals, surfers, other campervanners and dead fish for company, or in the hills around Glasgow, or on Skye, Assynt, the Cowal peninsula or even in southern France, her main aim was to switch off her phone, get out her laptop and write. Sue has made countless journeys in campervans (one of her favourite types of campervan is Romahome) in the last few years and thanks to her practice of taking notes as she travels, we, too, can enjoy her campervan experiences. In Writing on the Road Sue also writes about the many and varied practical difficulties of campervan life that she has had to overcome. They include locking herself out of the campervan at night miles from home; coping with local bylaws and negative attitudes to campervans and to women travelling solo; having to drive a hundred miles before she could empty a cracked toilet; and finding out the wrong (and the right) way to buy a campervan. We hope this book will inspire anyone looking for encouragement in the expressive arts to get creative and persuade any would-be campervanners to get out there and enjoy the campervan life.

Mavis’s Shoe is the dramatic and moving story of Lenny Gillespie, a young girl who lives through the bombing of her town during WW2. Feisty and resolute by nature and not given to suffering fools gladly, it is left to Lenny to search for her mother and beloved sister Mavis who she loses in the mayhem of survival. This is a strong characterdriven novel about the trauma of war and its effect on the family. In this passionate well-told tale of Lenny’s extraordinary courage and determination in the face of danger, the reader can expect a wide range of emotions: fear, grief and anger as well as courage, laughter and joy. Lenny confronts the things she most fears, the things she saw during the bombing and that no-one should ever see. She pleads with adults to help her and tries to behave the way she ought, but finally in frustration is forced to return to the disaster area alone, leading to the book’s dramatic conclusion.

mAvis’s shoe

This novel is an ideal resource for teachers, set as it is in wartime during one of the most tragic events in Scotland’s history. viewing the horror of the Clydebank Blitz from the unique perspective of a child allows for plenty of exploration around the subject of war. Written to present the universal experience of being bombed, it has relevance to the historical past but also to current world conflicts. Entirely historically accurate, it also paints a realistic picture of the home front of the time.

But as the tides of war turn and Italy joins the Allies to fight the Nazis, the fists of war and fear are set to grab Lenny once more. Adversity threatens each moment, and Lenny is about to lose her closest ally. Told the family must move back to Clydebank with its smoke and factories and now overcrowded, teeming dwellings, Lenny refuses to give up her rural sanctuary. When her mother Peggy returns to Clydebank for a job, leaving Lenny to become a little mother to her siblings, Lenny lies about her age to look for work locally. But this new turn is bewildering. Exhausted, Lenny seizes on news of her father, convinced that if only she can discover the truth about where he is, if only she can find him, she can make their family complete again. But no-one will meet her eye. Desperate, and in need of a happy ending, Lenny sets out, but all is not as she hopes… Her steps take her the length of the great Clyde estuary, and into new dangers in the vast, dark, threatening and adult war-time ports of Helensburgh and Greenock... Enjoy this new book, the sequel to Mavis’s Shoe, a harrowing account of the bombing of Clydebank in March 1941.

An Unexpected Affair – Running her beloved bookshop The Reading Room in a quiet pretty seaside town in Devon, Eleanor Mace is unsettled. Her grown up twins don’t need her, her recent divorce has left her at a loose end, and her subsequent move from London to buy the bookshop, in search of something new has led her to… pretty much the same old life, but with sea air. So Eleanor goes online and rediscovers an old flame, in France. Impetuous and impulsive, and with her sister for protection, Eleanor sets off to France on a brief break, in search of a man she last saw in her 20s. But will she find contentment and love? This gently humorous story of one woman’s efforts to rebuild her life is entertaining and wry. With a cast of friends and relations ranging from an ex-policeman (now woman), a gofor-it sister, and love interest on both sides of the Channel, will Eleanor find the support to reconstruct the life she is looking for? A Summer of Surprises – Eleanor Mace is back from her adventures in France with a new love interest on the horizon, but the little Devon bookshop, high street and Combemouth now face the threat of a new development on the seafront. Will Eleanor be able to save the high street with the help of her friends, colleagues and family, and what will become of her new romance?

When a ghost ship is sighted off the coast of Combemouth, Eleanor embarks on a voyage to discover more about the village’s seafaring history and disturbs some old family secrets in the village. Witty and entertaining, this blend of cosy crime, and historical fiction will delight fans of romantic fiction. Photo: Johanne Wright

About the author: Jan Ellis began writing fiction by accident in 2013. Until then, she had led a blameless life as a publisher, editor and historian of early modern Spain. She fell into fiction when a digital publisher approached her to write a history book, then made the mistake of mentioning women’s fiction, which sounded much more fun.

Jan’s stories have small-town settings with realistic characters who range in age from young teens to eighty-somethings. She is somewhat surprised to find herself a member of the Romantic Novelists’ Association.

As a country, Wales began with Henry VIII’s Act of Union in 1536. Before that time, Wales had been a loose collection of kingdoms and lordships with many incursions from Europe. With a history traceable to 250,000 BC, the Welsh are descended from many different peoples. Wales History of a Nation explains how Wales developed from its Celtic origins, through its joining the Union and its social, political and industrial development from then through to the modern age. This is a clear, excellent and popular introduction to Welsh history written by the bestselling historian David Ross. It is an ideal guide for the student, as well as the tourist. About this book: This original and very readable history of Ireland by David Ross tells the story of Ireland from prehistoric times to the present day. Fact windows in the text highlight many noteworthy aspects of Irish history and a chronology gives an overview of Ireland’s major cultural, political and religious trends. For the greater part of a millennium, while Europe seethed, churned and changed, Ireland did not operate as an independent national state. While past events in Ireland have often created disarray in British politics, and the history of Ireland is sometimes told as a history of England-in-Ireland, an effort has been made in the writing of this book to tell the story of the Irish people, as the Irish people have maintained a very clear identity for generations.

about this book: Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson KB (1758 – 1805) was a British flag officer in the Royal Navy. Admired for his leadership, strategy and tactics, he led many decisive British naval victories, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars. Known for his bold actions, and sometimes disobeying his seniors, Nelson was taken into the hearts of the British people. This slightly built, battle-scarred, often vain man, of dubious private life and few known accomplishments beyond his profession, became a legendary figure in British history. When Admiral Horatio Nelson died, people who had never seen him wept because they felt they had lost someone special and irreplaceable. How that came about, this book describes. Nelson helped to capture Corsica and took part in the Siege of Calvi (where he lost the sight in his right eye). He later lost his right arm at the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1797. Nelson destroyed Napoleon’s fleet at the Battle of the Nile in 1798, and thus gained a direct trade route to India for Britain.

Over the period 1794 to 1805 and under Nelson’s leadership, the Royal Navy proved its supremacy over the French. Nelson’s most famous engagement, at Cape Trafalgar, saved Britain from threat of invasion by Napoleon, but it would be his last. Before the Battle of Trafalgar began on 21 October 1805, Nelson sent out the famous signal to his fleet ‘England expects that every man will do his duty’. He was killed by a French sniper just a few hours later, while leading the attack on the combined French and Spanish fleet. Nelson’s body was preserved in brandy and transported back to England where he was given a state funeral. He is buried in St Paul’s Cathedral, London.

about this book: Queen Victoria was born on 24th May 1819 which means 24 May 2019 is the 200th anniversary of her birth. Queen Victoria is Great Britain’s second longest-reigning monarch, after Queen Elizabeth II, with sixty-four years between becoming queen in 1837 and her death in 1901. Victoria was a woman of quite commonplace disposition and interests, but with an uncommon will and equally rare sense of duty, who found herself at the age of eighteen in a position of unique social and political importance as Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. She held this position through bad times without ever quite collapsing, and through better times in triumph, for more than sixty years. A great symbol of enduring stability, Queen Victoria meant something to her subjects, and they found her worthy of that ‘something’, in which patriotism, personal loyalty, attachment to national tradition, and often something akin to love, were all present.

Suggested wines and speciality teas are suggested for each macaron recipe, along with presentation ideas for weddings, children’s parties and gifts ... plus many other tips. You will discover that making Parisian macarons can be the most gratifying and addictive of life’s little luxuries to make at home yourself.

A bubbly woman came up to me at the end of a recent meet-up here in Paris with a bag of homemade macarons and a book, which she just published, on the same subject. In the bag were the most lovely little macarons I’ve seen in all of Paris, even in the fancy places that churn out a gazillion of these cookies annually. Macarons have gone rogue, leaving the confines of Paris and spreading across the globe. Mad About Macarons! by Jill Colonna is lavishly photographed with lots of clear steps of the process of how to make classic macarons as well as interesting and unusual variations (curry, chocolate-beet, and pistachiowasabi to name a few). If you like macarons, it’s likely you’ll love this book. It’s likely you’ll love this book! – david Lebovitz Masterchef-junkies bewildered by all that messing about with macaroons in the last series – les macarons having replaced the cupcake as the must-have dessert de nos jours – can learn how to do it right in Jill Colonna’s Mad about Macarons! The macaron, to distinguish it from the more brutal macaroon, is a “delicate, airy, meringue-based shell with a moist centre of fragrant custard cream which, being flavoured with raspberry, pistachio or vanilla, is the stuff of Parisian dreams.” The Scotsman Books of the Year, – elisabeth Luard

About Jill colonna and more about the book:

Genre:

Pâtisserie/Baking/Cookery/Paris/ France

Jill thought pâtisserie and macarons were hard to make when she first moved to France, after she fell in love with a Frenchman in her native Scotland.

• Incorporates interesting historical gems and recommendations for discovering the best pastries while visiting Paris. • Previous book, Mad About Macarons!, is a bestseller.

Making the move to Paris in 1993, Jill couldn’t speak much French and had never needed to entertain before. Realising her banana surprise with custard from a packet mix was not going to hack it with her French dinner guests, she needed to improve her culinary skills tout de suite in order to impress. over the years she has gained confidence by learning cookery tricks from her French friends and family. As a busy working mum, Jill began to make pâtisserie as a hobby – partly as a challenge, and partly for her budget. Calling herself a “lazy gourmet”, she loves exploring ways to make impressive-looking treats without spending too much time or money on them, while keeping the authenticity of pastry’s exquisite taste. Previously a professional musician, Jill continues to enjoy playing flute and piano and also conducts chocolate shop and pâtisserie walking tours around St Germain des Prés in Paris.

The Complete Book of Mince is a funny, brave, new cookery book for the credit crunch from not-yet-celebrity chef René La Sagne. Mince is a nutritious staple, vital to the Scottish diet, and The Complete Book of Mince is a lighthearted celebration of this underrated food from Paisley’s own Prince of Mince. 72 essential recipes – from good old fashioned mince, to gourmet mince recipes for lasagne, curried mince, vegetarian mince, dolmas, keftedes, spaghetti Bolognese, veggie burgers and ideas from all over the world. Scattered throughout are tips, observations and commentary on mince history and restaurant etiquette from René. A recent American report said low-fat cooking, vegetables and laughter help to reduce the chance of heart disease – this book has all three! Scotland and the UK love mince! It’s official. We spend £1.41 million a day on fresh mince — that’s more than we spend on baked beans! Brits last year spent £503 million on fresh mince, and Scots spent £63 million – 15 million kg. 82% of all households in Scotland bought fresh mince in 2007. (Source: Quality Meat Scotland) René put his classical French training behind him when he followed his beloved Kelly-Marie to Paisley, Scotland. Paisley is Scotland’s biggest town, famous for its former cloth industry, Abbey, and now René’s mythical mince restaurant, Maison de Mince. No one wanted to know about his fancy cordon bleu dishes. They wanted mince – cordon brun! Rene set out to learn about mince, and discovered he too shared a passion for the greatest dish in the world. He gathered his favourite recipes, and some from friends around the world, in one unique volume – a testament to René’s devotion to his subject. This book is nothing less than a kitchen saviour – vital for families, students, and anyone cooking on a budget. It’s a healthy option too; choose extra lean steak mince or turkey mince and you can even mince yourself thin! Chef René La Sagne says: “It is time to wake up and smell the mince. Since I came to live in Scotland, my life is mince. Mince has sustained generations of Scots, and the mince and tatties is a match made in heaven. At Maison de Mince, in Paisley, we discuss the World Mince and Tatties Championships, and whether la sauce rouge or brun should be served with the mince and tatties. Also, whether it is tatties and mince (west coast) or mince and tatties (east coast … or is that the other way round?). My advice to you is to rediscover the unsung and unfashionable, but essential, mince.” ‘Best-selling chefs Gordon Ramsay and Jamie oliver have a new rival – René La Sagne, and his cookbook about mince.’ The Sun Featured on STv’s Scotland Today, The Weekly News, The Daily Mail, The Daily Express, The Sunday Post, The Good Food Show.

This funny and off-the-wall book is the follow-up title to René La Sagne’s entertaining The Complete Book of Mince. In his humorous way he teaches men how to cook from basics to a full dinner party. From boiling eggs, to making stock for big soups; bread making; paté; bœuf bourguignon; ratatouille and ragoût; vindaloos to blow your head off; stir-fries; stuffed marrow; the secrets of le boudin and the ‘fifth quarter’; cup cakes for men; macarons man-style; lemon posset for softies and death by chocolate for toughies; sticky toffee pudding; a crème brulée with a blow torch; an attractive tart or a meringue? – René guides you through the rigours of the training course and will make a chef of you by the end.

In the last 50 years, literally thousands of pictures have passed through his hands. William Hardie grew up in the west of Scotland. He was a fineart researcher at Glasgow University, then Keeper and Deputy Director of Dundee Art Gallery. As a director of Christie’s, between 1977 and 1984, Hardie set up the Scottish Picture Department. In 1984, he formed the art dealers and gallery, William Hardie Fine Art (Gallery) in Blythswood Street, Glasgow. Within 10 years of establishing the gallery, Bill Hardie had discovered many wonderful pictures including a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds that is now in The Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum, Stirling, Scotland; an Edouard vuillard painting acquired by the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland, and a David Wilkie painting sold to the Paul Mellon Washington Collection, now in the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, Connecticut, USA.

Hardie has presented many notable exhibitions. Early on, while in Dundee he organised many important shows in conjunction with the Arts Council; the orchardson exhibition filled Edinburgh’s Royal Scottish Academy in 1972, and toured to Manchester and London; Donald Bain (1972); George Dutch Davidson (1973) and William McCance (1975). Hardie organised the Stanley Cursiter centenary show for the Edinburgh Festival (1987). At his Gallery he presented the Masters of German Expressionism (1990), and David Hockney’s Scottish debut (1993). All reflected Hardie’s commitment to art both old and new. In search for art, Hardie travelled some 40 times to Japan, and extensively in the US, Europe, and Tasmania. Reflecting on his life in art Bill Hardie says “Sometimes it’s a gamble but it’s great when it pays off. Serendipity is a wonderful thing, but you have to persevere.” Hardie is author of Scottish Painting 1837 To The Present, and The Glasgow Boys In Your Pocket, both published by Waverley Books.

1 2 About this book: For competent readers and speakers of english (level b1/b2), this book aims to help take an understanding of written and spoken english a few steps further, to help readers to speak idiomatic english fluently and comfortably, and to encourage a practical approach to mastering written english. in order to present yourself well, it is important to have a competent grasp of ‘good english’. but sometimes it is as important to know when you can break the rules as it is to know the rules themselves. This book emphasizes that while it is essential to have a good understanding of english grammar and usage it is also necessary to keep that usage modern and natural sounding. Shape Up Your English presents this information in accessible, bitesized chunks. The text has many headings and subheadings to make reading easier, and ‘fact boxes’ present vital tips and fascinating snippets of extra information in an interesting way. in addition, an extensive index and table of contents make cross-referring easy. in order to communicate with a wide range of people in a wide range of situations in a fluent and natural way, readers should have a good grasp of english grammar, a sound knowledge of spoken english and its pronunciation, and a familiarity with english idioms. idioms are phrases where the obvious meaning of the words involved can be far removed from the actual meaning of the phrase. it is important to understand this aspect of language, beyond the obvious literal meaning of the words, in order to be truly fluent. Shape Up Your English gives a comprehensive overview of vital aspects of english language study, to enable readers to perfect their written and spoken english. of

heel Achilles’Phonemic orthograPhy describes a pronunciation system where one phoneme (a sound) corresponds directly to one . grapheme (a letter). Putting it a simpler way, the spelling of words corresponds directly to the way they are pronounced. The Serbian language is almost perfect in terms orthography. The English language, however, of phonemic is very irregular in this respect. The spellings of many English words bear little resemblance to how they are pronounced. This can confuse many learners of English (and many native speakers too). In addition, some English words may vary in pronunciation in different parts of the UK, or the world, due to differences in accents. 34

English does not have, and has never had, an authoritative body – like the French Académie Française – regulating spelling, grammar and vocabulary. English has borrowed words from many other languages and retained the spellings but not necessarily the pronunciation. For hundreds of years French and Latin had priority as the languages of court and official papers, not English. Some spelling still reflects a pronunciatio n that existed several centuries ago. English spelling was standardized during the 15th and 16th centuries with the invention of printing; however, pronunciation went through a process of change (the language developed long vowels) between 1400 and the midtwentieth century, known as the great Vowel shift.

Some of the symbols are the ordinary letters of the Roman alphabet but some have been specially invented. The International Phonetic Alphabet was first published in 1889. There are over 150 different characters used in the IPA. What follows is a selection of the characters that are commonly used to represent British English: 35

How a word is spelled in English does not always correspond with how it is pronounced and because of this difficulty it is important to have a pronunciation guide in an English dictionary. Unlike other dictionaries that rely solely on a phonetic system, this new dictionary also has a syllable-based ‘spelling’ pronunciation. This means that the pronunciation of each word stays as close to the original spelling as is possible. The guide is readable, has no phonetic symbols, and has no need for a key, as each word is spelled out as it sounds. The system is based on the norms of English spelling and pronunciation.
