THE ROUNDHILL ACADEMY

ther e g to g in n r a le h g u thro Achieving success

WELCOME It is my enormous privilege to be joining The Roundhill Academy during this exciting stage of its history. My vision is for The Roundhill Academy to be an outstanding Academy, recognised locally and nationally for its outstanding work whilst always having the students’ best interests at heart. I want students to surpass their academic targets, to become lifelong, reflective learners and to thoroughly enjoy their time here at the Academy. Whilst academic success is essential, this can only be a part of the experience students have, and successes need to be experienced in all parts of Academy life. To me, this wish to look at the whole child is summed up in our mission statement of ‘Achieving Success Through Learning Together’. Mr James Tickle, Principal

01

LEARNING At Roundhill we want every student to be the best that they can be, both inside and out of the classroom. Your child will receive a high quality education with inclusion at its heart. This includes a broad, balanced and personalised curriculum which matches the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science with the creativity of Music, Drama, Art and Design Technology. In addition, students will enjoy ICT, PE, Humanities and Language lessons. The timetable provides students with the opportunity to engage in our innovative Enrichment Programme. During these lessons, students enjoy a range of topics which include Carnival, The Olympics, Roundhill Times Past and The 60’s. Each student participates in 12 unique topics designed to broaden their experiences and develop skills beyond the classroom.

02

CARE The transfer from primary to secondary school can be a challenging time. We believe in making this step as easy as possible by working with local primary schools prior to your child starting at Roundhill. Indeed, your child may have already sampled our taster sessions in Years 4 & 5. We aim to provide stability of relationships from the first day, with all students having the same tutor during their time at Roundhill. Our dedicated team of Pastoral Staff ensure that your child’s education is supported, happy and rewarding. Our current Year 9 students support the transition to Roundhill by acting as Peer Mentors to new students.

03

ACHIEVEMENT With a history that now stretches back over 80 years, many local parents and grandparents will be aware of the academic and sporting achievements that Roundhill students enjoy. This is accomplished by providing an educational environment which allows every student to fulfil their potential. We continually invest in Roundhill to ensure our state of the art facilities match our traditional educational values. Parental involvement is vital for your child’s success at Roundhill. We value your views and consult with parents on a range of educational issues to help us continually improve. We will keep you informed of your child’s progress through parental discussions, formal reports and, more immediately, with the help of the Roundhill School Planner – the means of communication on a daily and weekly basis.

04

KEY STAGE 4 As you will no doubt be aware The Roundhill Academy has made the decision to become an 11-16 Secondary School. This removes the need for an extra transition at the age of 14 and will improve the continuity and quality of teaching and learning for your child. We will ensure that we achieve this change whilst keeping all of our students best interests at heart. We genuinely believe that by making this change we are doing the best for all of the young people in our care.

05

VISION Roundhill aims to meet the needs of all students. We appreciate that children can have a wide range of abilities across all curriculum subjects. We clearly identify students who may need to be challenged to achieve their potential, along with those who may, at times, require a little more support and encouragement. We have a dedicated team of professionally trained staff who cater for any individual students’ needs. A range of additional opportunities are provided to stimulate and develop these students, many of which are held jointly with local primary and secondary schools.

06

RESPONSIBILITY We encourage student participation in the decision making process of school life wherever possible. The School Council provides an opportunity for students to gain skills in structured debates and acquire a real understanding of the processes required to instigate change. As members of the Syston and Thurmaston Education Partnership, students work closely with our partner schools, as well as those within the city of Leicester. As young adults, during their time at Roundhill students receive guidance on both further and higher education opportunities as well as the world of work beyond.

07

COMMUNITY At Roundhill, students are encouraged to become good citizens. They take part in a range of charitable work throughout the school year and build on our already strong relationships with many local organisations. Our annual Christmas Hamper delivery to residents of both Thurmaston and Syston is enjoyed by many in the community. To further enhance their sense of community and working for each other, students will belong to one of our four Houses: Bradgate Panthers, Charnwood Lions, Swithland Foxes or Watermead Tigers. House Points are awarded throughout the year for academic excellence, sporting achievement, effort, good behaviour and citizenship to name but a few, which we hope will continually inspire your child to succeed.
