The Power of Intentionality
We often talk about the big things that drive professional growth, but sometimes it’s the small, intentional efforts that quietly move the needle.
At the center of those quiet efforts is something called “intentionality ”.
WHAT IT MEANS
At its core, intentionality is being thoughtful on purpose. It is the decision to approach your day with care. Not just care for your work, but care for the people you work with
It is also not about being perfect or always knowing what to do. It is about being present and consistent in the small things that build trust and show you care about how your actions, or sometimes inaction, may affect others.
WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE IN PRACTICE
The great news is, you’re most likely already doing it in many ways throughout your day
Maybe you pause to reread an email before sending it. Or follow up with a client or co -worker after a meeting. Maybe you offer to help a teammate without being asked or share something beneficial with a client or coworker, like a website article, regulation change or deadline.
Some other examples might include:
• Following through when you say you will
• Reading the room or situation and thinking of a thoughtful answer before responding
• Double- checking your work for errors
• Putting effort into how you present yourself
• Showing courtesy, like remembering names, saying thank you, and treating others with respect
None of these actions are difficult and maybe not even impactful within themselves. But they reflect your character, and over time this could have real impact.
WHY IT MATTERS
Intentionality builds trust. It shapes how teammates experience working with you and how clients experience the firm. It reinforces a culture where people follow through, treat others well, and take pride in what they do. All these things add up to create an environment where people want to stay and succeed.
Those everyday moments can influence relationships, reputation, and opportunity. That is true whether you are client-facing or behind the scenes. Everyone plays a role in what clients and coworkers come to expect from us.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU
Now that intentionality is top of mind, you may ask “what is there for me to do”? Maybe nothing… or maybe this is a great opportunity to identify areas where you may need growth.
Not sure where to start? Think of someone you admire professionally. What do they do that makes them stand out in a positive way? Chances are intentionality plays a role. Maybe you could model some of the intentional behaviors that stand out to you, or maybe you could start with a few of the examples mentioned earlier.
The impact may not be immediate, but over time, small, consistent, thoughtful actions influence trust, strengthen teams, and contribute to an environment where great things can happen.
