Beauty & The Garden Full Moon Yoga & Camping Retreat Tips to Save Water SUMMER 2022

message from the EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OUR MISSION The mission of The Water Conservation Garden is to educate and inspire through excellent exhibits and programs that promote water conservation and the sustainable use of related natural resources. BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2022

President Patrick Pilz Vice President Jan Tubiolo Secretary TBA Treasurer Chris Coughlan Tom Allingham Robert Caruso Michael Hager, Ph.D. Cheryl Minshew Francisco Morales Ed Woodruff

SUMMER IS IN FULL BLOOM AT THE GARDEN. Even on the hottest days,

The Garden is still beautiful, using low-wateruse plants and landscapes. Education and awareness play a huge role in the conservation of water. However, action is required to really make a difference. It is time for action – from reducing our waste at home, being mindful of our water and carbon footprint, and staying conscious of how we are using natural resources. Saving water is easier than you might think. A few simple changes can make a big difference – especially outdoors. If you want to be inspired and motivated to create change, visit The Water Conservation Garden. More than half of residential water use is for landscape irrigation. Classes and workshops are offered monthly at your very own Water Conservation Garden. See enclosed calendar to be inspired. Jennifer Pillsbury Executive Director/CEO “Our livelihood is intimately tied to the food we eat, water we drink, and places where we recreate. That’s why we have to promote responsibility and conservation when it comes to our natural resources.”

AND THE

Garden

Written by: Paul Redeker Photography: Paul Redeker & Vince McGrath There is beauty at The Water Conservation Garden! Join us in The Garden and you will find that waterwise plants and flowers will paint an amazing artistry of color, complexity, form, and texture often bringing a garden to life while supporting water conservation efforts. Echeveria ‘Etna’ is a striking example of a succulent named after an active volcano found in Italy, but it comes from Mexico. Its shape has bumpy, blue-purple leaves, sometimes with pinkish edges that fold down to form a wonderful triangle. Etna attracts pollinators and grows best in well-drained succulent soils and sun but will also thrive in afternoon shade or filtered sunlight. Find this beauty in the formal garden fountain or in the Buckner Garden just outside of The Samuel M. Ciccati Water Conservation Education Center viewing window. The Lavender Lady Passion Vine is another beauty that displays an incredible, almost sea-creature looking, spiral of flower parts called the corona filament which surround yellow reproductive receptacles that include a 3-pronged stigma and a single-hinged anther. Find this Passiflora x ‘Lavender Lady’ vine in our butterfly pavilion along with our other collection of Gulf Fritillary Butterfly host plants. As the season paints its way into the fall, remember that it is not necessary to resort to cactus and succulents. California native chaparral plants, desert hardy shrubs from Mexico and Arizona, and even palm trees can add striking color to a landscape creating paradise. A favorite palm is the Mediterranean Fan Palm (Chamaerops humilis): single trunked or multiple and green throughout the year, this palm provides a solid foundation plant for any landscape and only needs pruning once per year making it a very low-maintenance addition. Other plant choices that add structural interest include the Desert Spoon (Dasyliron wheeleri), Western Redbud (Cercis occidentallis), Red yucca (Hesperaloe parviflora), and the many winter blooming Acacias from Australia. Cat’s-Claw Vine

Plant r! a t s r e p Su

Cat’s-Claw vine, Dolichandra unguis-cati, also known as cat’s claw creeper or yellow trumpet vine, is native to Mexico, Central and South America, and much of the Caribbean. Cat’s-Claw vine scrambles across the ground until it finds something to climb on, and the tendrils mimic the look of a cat’s claw! Its superpower is that it forms a large structure used for vitamin storage called a “tuber” that helps it endure drought. Within a few weeks of sprouting the Cat’s-Claw vine scampers across the ground to find something to cling onto and climb!

Meet Our Staff

Lauren Magnuson, Ms. Smarty-Plants™ Program Manager

Lauren has been at The Garden for nine years and manages the Ms. Smarty-Plants™ Program. She coordinates planning, scheduling, and making sure that everyone has a great time learning. Fun facts: Lauren loves hosting her children’s friends at their family home—the children have named the “fun house.” She enjoys plants, of course, all day beach trips, and making yummy southern food. In her spare time, Lauren coaches youth soccer and is a garden chair for her children’s school garden. Lauren is proudly supported by her family – husband, Mr. Smarty-Plants™, aptly named Leif Magnuson, 5th grader son Lemy, and 2nd grade daughter Eloise – who all have enjoyed making life fun. 7 • TheGarden.org

We had a great turnout for The Water Conservation Garden’s first-ever San Diego Tree Week celebrated from Earth Day through Arbor Day, April 22-29. Special thanks to San Diego Tree Week’s generous sponsors: SDG&E, Sycuan, Union Bank, Wheelhouse, and MyPoint. Throughout the week-long celebration, over 70 teams planted trees around San Diego County. Continuing the celebration, over 100 guests joined featured musician, certified double-platinum singer, songwriter Ryan Cabrera at the San Diego Tree Week concert sponsored by Union Bank! Thank you so much to those of you who participated whether you donated to the program, organized a team, attended a workshop, or dug a hole. There were so many ways to engage with San Diego Tree Week, an initiative of The Water Conservation Garden, and we hope you will find ways to join us next year! 9 • TheGarden.org
