The Back Page Homemaking mogul Martha Stewart was convicted of conspiracy and obstruction of justice in a notorious insider stock trading case in 2004. She was a former stockbroker herself. In June of 2002 she became tangled in an insider trading scandal unrelated to her own company - she sold her shares of stock in the drug company ImClone one day before an FDA decision caused the stock to drop, and after she had been given insider information by broker Peter Bacanovic. The next year, on June 4, 2003, Stewart pleaded innocent to federal charges including obstruction of justice, conspiracy and making false statements. Her trial was held early in 2004, and on March 5th of that year she was found guilty of all charges in the case. She spent five months in a West Virginia prison and was released to house arrest in March of 2005. From 1996 through 2001, Oscar nominated actor Robert Downey Jr. was arrested numerous times on drug-related charges and went several times through drug treatment programs unsuccessfully, explaining in 1999 to a judge: “It’s like I have a loaded gun in my mouth and my finger’s on the trigger, and I like the taste of the gunmetal.” After five years of substance abuse, arrest, rehab, and relapse, Robert Downey, Jr. was finally ready to work toward a full recovery from drugs and a return to his career. After his last arrest in April 2001, when he knew he would likely be facing another stint in prison or another form of incarceration, such as court-ordered rehab, something clicked and Downey finally got clean, and has not been arrested since then. Robert Downey, Jr. cemented his comeback and recovery in the comic book-inspired “Iron Man” series. Scott Weiland, the charismatic lead singer for two successful mainstream rock bands – Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver was arrested in May 2008 after the singer surrendered to the Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department to begin serving eight days in jail for a DUI conviction. The musician was released after spending a few hours in custody. In addition to his time in the Los Angeles County Jail, Weiland was placed on four years probation, ordered to enroll in an 18-month alcohol education program, and fined about $2000. Scott Weiland has struggled with drug addiction for years, which has caused him to be arrested on several occasions. In 1995, he was busted for buying crack cocaine, receiving a one-year probation sentence. Two years later, he was arrested for heroin possession. At the end of 1999, he was forced to spend a year in a county-jail recovery center because of a probation violation. In November 2007, he was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs and later entered rehab. Rap music titan Marion ‘Suge’ Knight posed for this mug shot in August 2008 after he was arrested by Las Vegas police for assaulting his girlfriend. According to police, Knight, 43, was driving in a car with the woman when they began to argue. She alleges the rap producer punched her so she grabbed the vehicle’s wheel causing the car to stop. When police arrived on the scene they saw Knight standing over her with a knife in his hand. He was taken to the Clark County Detention Center where officers found Ecstacy and Hydrocodone in his possession. Knight was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, battery, domestic violence, and drug possession.

Strange But True It was Ray...no, it was Samantha...no, it was Courtney...no, it was Brittany... February 2011 – Sandusky, Ohio - A woman suspected of drunk driving pulled herself over after mistaking the flashing Skate World sign for police lights. While pulling to the side of the road the woman lodged her black Dodge Avenger into a snow bank near the sign. A passerby stopped to see if the woman needed help and called police after noticing she seemed intoxicated, according to a Perkins Township police report. When officers did arrive, they found Nicole Scott, 27, sitting alone in her car. She denied being the driver of the vehicle and said her friend Ray had been driving, but he ran off. She proceeded to tell police her friend Samantha had been driving and, later, that her friend Courtney had been driving. Finally she said her friend Brittany had been driving, according to police. Scott refused a sobriety test because she insisted she was not the driver. Police found a half-full bottle of Michelob Ultra in the car and only one set of footprints near the vehicle. Scott had trouble walking when she exited the vehicle and had to be helped to a waiting police cruiser, the report said. She was arrested on charges of OVWI and having an open container.

The Red Bull Defense February 2011 - Stephen Coffeen says Red Bull, in part, made him do it. The Pinellas County, Florida man said through his attorney that a lethal combo of the energy drink and lack of sleep put him into a frenzied state that led him to smother his 83-year-old father to death with a pillow in December 2009. Coffeen’s lawyer George Tragos is arguing that because of such circumstances, his client be found not guilty by reason of insanity in his ongoing trial. He further stated, “The insanity at the time of the offense is normally a perfect storm where all sorts of factors come into play all at once, all at the same time causing the break down.” Stephen Coffeen’s brother, Thomas, told a local Tampa TV news station that he doesn’t buy his brother’s “high-energy” defense. “It’s crap; I don’t even think the man even drank Red Bull,” Thomas told the station. “They cannot 100 percent tell me he did not know what he was doing.”
