Bullying - What Can Parents Do? When Your Child Is Bullied

What is Bullying? • Fighting, threatening, name-calling, teasing, or excluding someone repeatedly and over time • An imbalance of power, such as size or popularity • Physical, social, and emotional harm • Hurting another person to get something Many parents don’t think that bullying is as big a problem as bringing a weapon to school or drug use but its effects can be severe and long lasting. Every day, nearly 160,000 children miss school because they are scared of bullying, according to the National Education Association. Bullying doesn’t only negatively affect its victims, but also the bullies themselves.

When Your Child Is a Bully

Many kids are embarrassed to be bullied and may not tell their parents or another adult right away. If your child comes to you and asks for help with a bully, take it seriously. Many times, if kids aren’t taken seriously the first time they ask for help, they don’t ask again. Even if your child doesn’t turn to you for help, you can watch for these warning signs that he or she is being bullied. Kids who are bullied often experience

It’s hard for any parent to believe that their child is a bully, but sometimes it happens. But just because your child bullies doesn’t mean that he or she will bully forever. Parents are one of the best resources to help their child stop bullying and start interacting positively with their classmates. Your child may bully if, he or she

• Withdrawal • A loss of friends • A drop in grades • A loss of interest in activities he or she previously enjoyed • Bruises • A need for extra money or supplies

• Lacks empathy and doesn’t sympathize with others • Values aggression • Likes to be in charge • Is an arrogant winner and a sore loser • Often fights often with brothers and sisters • Is impulsive

If you think your child is being bullied or if your child has told you that he or she is being bullied, you can help. Parents are often the best resource to build a child’s self-confidence and teach him or her how to best solve problems. Here are a few ways you can help:

What you can do to stop your child from bullying • Take it seriously. Don’t treat bullying as a passing phase. Even if you’re not worried about long-lasting effects on your child, another child is being hurt. • Talk to your child to find out why he or she is bullying. Often, children bully when they feel sad, angry, lonely, or insecure and many times major changes at home or school may bring on these feelings. • Help build empathy for others and talk to your child about how it feels to be bullied. • Ask a teacher or a school counselor if your child is facing any problems at school, such as if your child is struggling with a particular subject or has difficulty making friends. Ask them for advice on how you and your child can work through the problem. Ask yourself if someone at home is bullying your child. Often, kids who bully are bullied themselves by a parent, family member, or another adult.

• Talk to your child’s teacher about it instead of confronting the bully’s parents. If the teacher doesn’t act to stop the bullying, talk to the principal. • Teach your child nonviolent ways to deal with bullies, like walking away, playing with friends, or talking it out. • Help your child act with self-confidence. With him or her, practice walking upright, looking people in the eye, and speaking clearly. • Don’t encourage your child to fight. This could lead to him or her getting hurt, getting in trouble, and beginning more serious problems with the bully. • Involve your child in activities outside of school. This way he or she can make friends in a different social circle.

The Back Page August 1920 – Charles Ponzi was an Italian con artist, who is considered one of the greatest swindlers in American history. The term “Ponzi scheme” is a widely known description of any scam that pays early investors returns from the investments of later investors. He promised clients a 50% profit within 45 days, or 100% profit within 90 days, by buying discounted postal reply coupons in other countries and redeeming them at face value in the United States as a form of arbitrage. In two federal indictments, Ponzi was charged with 86 counts of mail fraud. Ponzi pleaded guilty to a single count and served a federal sentence of 3-1/2 years. Upon his release he was arrested on 22 charges of larceny in the state of Massachusetts. In 1925, he was arrested for violating Florida trust and securities laws for selling swampland. He continued to jump from scheme to scheme, both in the United States and Italy. He died 1949 at age 66.

September 2005 - Dennis Kozlowski, the former CEO of Tyco International, was sentenced - along with CFO Mark Swarz – after being found guilty of allegedly embezzling an estimated $600 million from his company, its employees, and its stockholders. He borrowed $19 million, interest free, to buy a house, a debt that the company then forgave as a “special bonus.” He got an $18 million apartment in Manhattan and charged the company $11 million more for artwork and furnishings, including a $6,000 shower curtain and $2,200 garbage can. He even threw his wife a little 40th birthday party on the island of Sardinia that cost the company over $2 million dollars. Kozlowski narrowly escaped conviction in his first trial which was thrown out by the judge, when reports surfaced that a juror was holding out for acquittal because the juror had received a threatening lawyer and had flashed “OK” signs to Kozlowski and his lawyers during the trial. The second trial was a different story however and Kozlowski was found guilty on 22 of 23 counts of conspiracy, grand larceny, falsifying business records and violating business law. He is currently serving 8.33 to 25 years at the Mid-State Correctional Facility in Marcy, New York.

July 2004 - Kenneth Lay, best known for his role in the widely reported corruption scandal that led to the downfall of Enron Corporation. Lay and Enron became synonymous with corporate abuse and accounting fraud when the scandal broke in 2001. Lay was the CEO and chairman of Enron from 1985 until his resignation in January 2002, except for a few months in 2000 when he was chairman and Jeffrey Skilling was CEO. Lay was found guilty in May 2006 of 10 counts of securities fraud and related charges. He died of a heart attack in July 2006, three and a half months before he was scheduled to be sentenced, at the age of 64. As a result of his death, on October 17, 2006, the federal district court judge who presided over the case vacated Lay’s conviction. Had he lived, he would have faced 20-30 years in prison.

True Crime Robber Dressed as Grass October 2010 – Hillsboro, Oregaon police arrested Gregory Liascos, 36, on charges of burglary and criminal mischief in the Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals. After a caretaker at the museum found dust on the bathroom floor, several nights in a row, the police set up extra security and nabbed their suspect, who had been attempting to break into the museum by drilling into a bathroom that wasn’t connected to the museum’s prized quarter-million-dollar gold collection. After finding a bike and a backpack, police ordered the K9 unit to search the grounds. About a ½ mile away, the K9 unit alerted investigators to a particular piece of ground. The dog bit the “ground” and police were startled when the “ground” cried out in pain. Liascos was wearing a “Ghillie suit” – camouflage used by hunters and military snipers making them hard to spot. The specific reason for his break-in attempt is unknown.

Sleepwalking Defense Not Convincing November 2010 – A Council Bluffs, Iowa, man – Robert Butts, 44 – was convicted of seven charges, including second-degree kidnapping and assault. His defense attorney argued that Butts, who served three tours of duty in Iraq, was sleepwalking when he broke into his female neighbor’s apartment – they did not know each other but lived in the same complex. Butts claimed insanity as his defense stating that he last remembered being in his own apartment before waking up in the victim’s house surrounded by police with their weapons pulled. In his closing arguments, Pottawattamie County Attorney Matt Wilber called Butts’ defense “an incredible one.” Wilber listed 116 actions Butts would have had to do while he was “asleep” to perpetrate the crime. The jury deliberated the case for about two hours before returning the guilty verdict. He is appealing his case.
