FOREWORD An exhibition in a museum is a rare and prestigious accolade, this recognition of Paul Horton’s unique talent is not only well deserved but is testament to his inner determination and selfbelief to overcome early difficulties, establishing himself as one of the leading contemporary artists of his generation. The collection of original pastels, oil paintings, charcoal and sculptures comprising over eighty pieces is the embodiment of Horton’s artistic journey to date. Growing up on a council estate during the sixties and seventies has played a significant part in forging his character. During these days times were tough and as a child he struggled with ill health that had a detrimental effect on his school work, and his ability to find his true place within the classroom environment. Out of adversity his natural talent for art emerged, not only did it represent a form of escapism but ultimately as fate would have it became his destiny. Horton was once described by his art teacher as “drawing like a Pre-Raphaelite” which encouraged him to seek out and study the major collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings housed at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. Inspired by this he developed a deep interest in figurative painting which he cultivated during life drawing classes at the renowned Bournville School of Art. It was his studies in the traditional use of the figure and approach to realistic representation that allowed him years later the confidence to paint and sculpt from his imagination. During the mid-eighties Horton’s Art took a major change in direction. He was invited to a local puppet theatre that was about to close its doors for the last time. Given access to the storeroom of puppets and marionettes, what he found laid out before him he would later describe as ‘a lost world’. It was a world full of fables, fairytales and folklore that became a cathartic turning-point for Horton, as he breathed life into the strange and bizarre characters before him. The first paintings he produced showed the puppets still with strings and it

was only sometime later that he released them from their bonds, creating his own assortment of personalities and the beginnings of the work you see today. ‘Love & Hope’ is a celebration of Horton’s work and both can be found in every one of these beautiful paintings. We are taken on a journey through his own personal iconography and symbolism: the house of love offering protection and sanctuary from what can be a cruel and unforgiving world, the working man who toils for his loved ones without complaint, the benevolent wizard with his lantern as a beacon of hope that offers an escape from darkness and the man of mystery whose complexities serve to remind us that there are hidden depths behind everything we see. There is a strong emotional connection that opens up Horton’s work to a variety of rich interpretation. Horton’s extensive knowledge of the history of art allows him to be inspired by the methods and materials of artists such as Degas and Chagall. He’s also often described as the modern day Lowry, with his paintings being imbued with a workingclass spirit and ethic that is rarely seen. In spite of this, there are clear and constant truths that belong only to Horton and his audience; he has an innate ability as a storyteller that enthrals those who have come to know and love his work and taken him to a popularity he never thought possible. As you are charmed and delighted by this unique exhibition, I’m sure you will agree that this collection represents the very best work Horton has ever produced. A very honest, hardworking and proud man, he truly deserves all the accolades and praise that this show will bring him. I am honoured to present to you ‘Love & Hope’ the museum collection. This collection by Paul Horton is not just a collection of art, it is a collection of memories and values and traditions. The symbols and the narratives within Horton’s work are not just aesthetically pleasing, they are rich in narrative and awash with meaning. The house; a home. Through the anthropological ages and through the great literature of our time, our homes have been a safety, a shelter, a source of stability and comfort, a place to call your own, to laugh and to love. Within man, lies a fundamental yearning, a need, to put down roots. To commit ourselves to bricks and mortar, a place to call home, the need for roots.

“To be rooted is perhaps the most important and least recognized need of the human soul.” Simone Weil Simone Weil, preeminent philosopher and activist surmised that roots were the single most necessary thing for us as individuals and for society as a whole. Weil asserts, that to be rooted connects us with our past and our present, it gives us a sense of our own integral place in the world and importantly, it encourages us to care about and participate in community life. Where is that sense of community now? Are we still

connected to it? In this world dominated by technology and fragmented interactions, do we value what Weil considered to be integral to our inner peace and happiness? In Horton’s work we see it, with each piece we are ever entwined within a sense of belonging, of familiarity and community. There is the house, symbolising stability and love. The familiar streets down which Horton’s established characters walk. The seaside town, where imagination can roam. A wizard, who excites and intrigues; these are all individual in their own right, yet speak to a wider meaning. Horton’s work hangs on important values in life as he sees them - family values, truth, compassion and ambition. It is for this reason that we can all relate to what Horton creates. Birmingham born and bred, Horton knows what it means to be rooted and to care deeply for the community in which you belong, to appreciate what that community has given you (in his case, the ability to create and become the artist he always dreamed) and to give back to that place that has supported you – he does this, by hosting his first museum exhibition in the very heart of the city he loves. This isn’t just art, it is life reflected back to us. Perhaps a life we remember, we have or we long for, but there is no denying that we can all identify something which speaks to our minds or our hearts within this collection; because it reminds us of what is truly important, each other; with love and hope.

If the subtle vibrancy of colour isn’t the first aspect of Paul Horton’s pastels that makes an impact on the viewer, then the endless sense of optimism might well do it. Even the lonesome stroller (When I Were A Lad), heading to work, into the sunrise, carries a bag of lunch, a pack-up, and we know that although he walks slightly down-trodden, he will not starve. And the top-hatted suave character (If You Remember Me, I am Immortal) carries hope in a bag: is he the doctor, the healer, who has a skill, a knowledge, which suggests he is moving, living perhaps, against the flow, as taken by mere mortals of his time? And in monochrome (This Is My Town), the scraggy, stripey Tom has an air of quiet superiority, of gentle menace, and yet doesn’t appear at all malicious. He’s on sentry duty, guarding his domain. So these characters are typical Horton types, solitary and from a bygone age, romantic in their way. But it is when the pastels flash with that subtle vibrancy that the Horton canon blasts into orbit: Captain Of My Heart is a masterpiece of romantic beauty: the wee figures tiny in the frame, but instantly recognised as the focal point of the work. And isn’t that fellow optimistic! As, too, is the Vincent doppelganger. What else could he be? I have several of Paul’s originals hanging at home, and there are several in this exhibition that I have my eye on. Because this collection shows Paul at his best: always entertaining, endlessly enchanting and original.
