It’s painful, experiences such as these. Last Sunday, my bro and I were going to Mayur Vihar when we saw this girl crying in an autorickshaw parked there. Worried, we asked her what happened. She said she had no money to pay to the driver, so my brother decided to help her out with the cash. She thanked us,

judge. Day two of the fest brought along some of the most sought-after events — Rhythm n Blues and Ol’ That Jazz, which saw participation from students in huge numbers. Other events at the fest included Srijan (Hindi creative writing contest), Inquizzitive (quiz), Abhivyakti (Hindi debate) and Liminonoso (Fine Arts). The fest concluded on a rocking note with Punjabi group Bombay

asking my brother for his number to return the money later. She called after half an hour, and told him that her mother is in hospital, and she needed 2,500 bucks urgently. He gave her money. After two days, she said she wants R30,000 more. It was then that we realised what a fraud we had fallen for. These kind of people ruin Delhi, so please be careful! . Lalit Sharma

elhi Durbar 1911 is a book which tells us the untold story of the rebirth of Delhi. In 1877, the official transfer of power from East India Company to The Crown took place — this historical event, otherwise rather inconspicuous in Indian History, was termed as the ‘Delhi Durbar’. It was a unique mass gathering of all the Maharajas and Maharanis of India coming together to witness and acknowledge the transfer of power to The Crown. These pages are kind to rewind to a 100 years, to an event which changed the land-

scape of Delhi in ways far greater than the recent Commonwealth Games. The expenditure of this colossal event was estimated to be over 900,000 pounds sterling, and this was the inception where Delhi, “a barren land “ was transformed into a land of forts and beautiful parks such as the Coronation Park, which sadly is just another neglected park now. The popularity of movie footage of the event, shown in makeshift cinemas throughout India, is often credited with having launched the country’s early film industry. The event culminated in a grand Coronation Ball attended only by the highest ranking guests, all reigned over by

Lord Curzon and more so by the stunning Lady Curzon in her glittering jewels and regal peacock gown. It was during these days that India was the Golden Bird, as justified at the Durbar and all its treasury. Not many, for instance, know of the grand Delhi Durbar Tiara, presented to Queen Mary by the Maharani of Patiala to mark the first visit by a British Queen-Empress. The Durbar transformed Delhi into a city complete with temporary railway to bring crowds of spectators from outside the Capital, a post office with its own stamp and electric light installations. Kudos to the authors for working so hard to bring this previously overlooked spectacle to limelight. A gap in history is filled out; with each page the reader unearths a story behind a story.
