one are the days when musicians from India complained about not getting enough global recognition. Actor Priyanka Chopra’s pop success in the last two years, is an obvious indicator of a certain reversal of winds. This trend stands for not just the mainstream or Bollywood singers, but also independent musicians. This year’s Celtic Connections, an 18-day-long cultural festival in Glasgow, Scotland, which celebrates world music, saw as many as five acts from India. The onelakh-strong audience stood witness to an Indian musical panorama, unfolded by the like of folk-rock/pop icon Raghu Dixit, Kyun-famedsinger Papon and East India Company, Ruhaniyat (Kolkota-based band), sarangi player Suhail Yusuf Khan and folk-singer Saurav Moni. We caught up with three of our desi stars - Raghu, Papon and Suhail Yusuf, to get a backstage view of the videsi platform.

The ScottishEnglish crowd connected so well with Assamese and Hindi lyrics. We had Ross Ainslie play bagpipes for the Papon and The East India Company show, and in just 2-3 days, we managed to connect and play together with such comfort —Papon

Indian musicians have started getting global recognition. We bring you the backstage details from the 18-daylong cultural festival in Scotland

It is very interesting for us to go, watch and learn from them, while also showcasing our brand of music. The learning from just watching them play different genres will help artists expand their sound and music Raghu Dixit

e is listed by The Guinness Book of Records as the biggest selling Bhangra solo artist of all time, and has been awarded the prestigious Member of the Order of the British Empire, by Queen Elizabeth. But Punjabi singer Malkit Singh (left) is not happy with the way Bollywood has treated his music. “The way composers copy tunes and songs in Bollywood and then don’t give credit for it, is very disappointing. My song, Tootak Tootak, was also lifted for one of the films recently. And, then they say that these are folk songs that anyone can use! Jab Malkit Singh gaata hai, toh hi aapko yaad aata hai ki folk music hai!” laments Malkit.

Many Indian ragas sound similar to Celtic tunes, but what differentiates them is the perception of the composer. I wore a kilt on stage. We moulded everything into a group sound. So, there were Scottish tunes, Bangla tunes, as also Welsh Suhail Yusuf Khan

their individual lives are ready for each other. Through a chance encounter, a series of coincidences and fate’s helping hand, Amit and Samara’s lives intersect and affect each other in deep ways. Whether they are able to find their true paths or not forms the rest of the plot of the film.

When asked if the makers of Sunny Deol’s I Love New Year took his permission for using his all-time hit song, Gur Naal Ishq Mitha, in their film, the 51-year-old singer says, “They used my song without even asking me! They could have asked me to sing gur nal, I would have sung it for free for them. Aur mujhe bhi credit mil jata.” The veteran singer is also unhappy with the current music scene in India. “Pick any Hindi song today and you’ll see no meaning in them ... they revolve around the same hook line. Also, double meaning and vulgarity are added to songs to make them appealing. They are being shot in nightclubs as if there is no location left to be shot in India!” Singh was in India recently to promote his new album, Sikh Hon Da Maan. “The songs in my album are soulful. They’ll give you peace of mind,” he says.
