President’s Message This August edition of the Wascana Chronicle contains information on a number of Club events scheduled to take place this month, and I would like to take this opportunity to encourage all of our Members to participate in at least one of these events. I would particularly draw your attention to the Family Barbeque that will be held on Sunday August 11, 2013 when our long-time employee, John Moerkens will be inducted into the Club’s Hall of Fame.

Audit & Finance Report

For over 25 years, John was the Club’s own “Dutch Grower”, tending floral arrangements located throughout the course and around the clubhouse. Despite his advancing years, John insisted on cultivating the soil by hand, turning it over with a pitchfork and never resorting to the use of a rototiller. It used to amaze me how his back never gave out! His work as gardener never ceased; in the winter months, he would trudge along his oft-trodden path across holes 16, 17, 5 and 1 to work in the greenhouse and check to make sure the plants would remain alive for re-planting in the spring.

This edition of the Wascana Chronicle also contains a report from the Club’s Audit & Finance Committee, which met on July 23, 2013 to review the Club’s financial results for the 6 months ended June 30, 2013. As a result of its review, the Committee is recommending to the Board that the approved capital spending on the Spike Lounge and on holes, 3, 4 and 17 be postponed until there is a greater level of assurance concerning the Club’s projected cash flows, which are the primary source of funding for these projects. This recommendation is currently before the Board of Directors for ratification, but I thought I should provide some additional commentary.

The Board of Directors approved a 10 year Strategic Plan for Wascana Country Club back in October 2010, to be undertaken in four distinct phases. Phase 1 has been completed, and Phase 2 is currently in progress. (continued on next page…)

Page 2

President’s Message Continued... Two projects included in Phase 2 have already been completed, as follows: Hole #15 tee deck $12,000 Practice Fairway 9,000 Two approved projects in Phase 2 are now in progress, as follows: Year round recreation $15,000 Tree Renewal 26,000 The remaining capital projects included in Phase 2 of the Strategic Plan have been approved, subject to the Club’s projected cash flows: Hole # 4 $214,050 Hole # 3 26,300 Hole #17 24,800 Spike Lounge Express Area 113,000 Contingency 125,000 $503,150 As was emphasized during the Annual General Meeting back in April 2013, and then again during the Special Shareholders Meeting held on May 21, 2013, the Club’s strategic planning process requires a comprehensive review to be conducted by the Board following the completion of each phase and prior to any work being undertaken on the next phase. In addition, the planning process provides for the possibility of a specific item within a phase being amended or deferred, depending upon the Club’s current financial position or the necessary cash flow not being readily available. As a member of the Audit & Finance Committee, I attended the July 23 meeting and concur with its recommendation that the Club should defer making the substantial expenditures listed above until such time as the financial outlook improves and the Board and management can be more confident about its projected cash flows. Audit & Finance Committee Report Both pro shop and food and beverage operations were profitable for June and year to date are better than budget and last year. The excellent course condition and improved service levels have no doubt contributed to the positive year to date results and Management is to be commended for their efforts and focus on these areas. While the results are favourable to date, as I mentioned in my last report we are seeing some reductions in overall membership, a trend that if not reversed will negatively impact revenues and cash flows going forward. As a result, our committee has recommended to the Board that the approved capital spending for the spike lounge as well as for holes 4, 3 and 17 be postponed until such time as we have a greater level of confidence for projected cash flows. A summary of financial results to the end of June are as follows: June YTD Actual

Greens Core Aeration As mentioned at the September and April Membership Meetings, we are needing to aerate our greens on a more frequent yearly basis. This was based on a recommendation of the United States Golf Association Turf Advisory Service during the bi-yearly site visit in 2012. In summary sometime around the years 2005, 2006 a decision was made to eliminate the spring aeration. This elimination for several years allowed an unwanted volume of organic matter to develop in the greens. Unwanted volumes of organic matter from decaying roots and grass stems can act like a sponge holding too much water at the surface. This is why on several occasions in the past you could almost see your footprints bringing up water on freshly cut greens in addition to an unwanted pace to greens. We believe over time that this more frequent aeration of greens will deliver the health, consistency and pace that all members desire. Please Note: The course will be closed on Monday, August 19 for this scheduled aeration. On Tuesday, August 20 the first tee time will be 10AM (subject to completion of aeration). We thank you for your patience during this time.

History at the Wascana: A Family Story “The Armstrongs” On July 18, 2013 Jim Armstrong and Family of Cameron Ontario stopped by our club and donated several trophies. As it turns out his grandfather, J. E. Armstrong, was a member of the Wascana Country Club as far back as the 1920’s. He was runner up, second flight consolation in the 1929 Saskatchewan Golf Association Championship. ( Trophy 1) In 1936, J.E. Armstrong won the Saskatchewan Seniors Golf Championship. ( Trophy 2) He also won the 1936 Wascana Country Club President’s Cup presented by H. Maltby. ( Trophy 3) His son, Bill Armstrong won the 1929 Wascana Country Club Junior Championship. ( Trophy 4). Additionally he won the 1935 Wascana Country Club President’s Cup presented J.D. Simon. ( Trophy 5) In 1938 he went on to win the President’s Trophy. ( Trophy 6) He had a Hole in One in 1940. ( Trophy 7) Finally in 1942 Bill Armstrong captured the Wascana Country Club Men’s Club Championship. ( Trophy 8) Truly a remarkable story about the Armstrong Family and the importance they placed on golf and the Wascana Country Club. A special Thank You to Jim Armstrong and Family for donating these trophies and sharing these memories.
