President’s Message

May 2013

It is an honour to serve as President of the Club. This is the first occasion at the Wascana Country Club when the Board of Directors, at its initial meeting following the Annual General Meeting, appointed the four officers of the Club (President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary), as follows: President – John Aitken Vice-President – Janet Wightman Treasurer – Ed Meredith Secretary – John Hill

In the past, the President and Vice President were appointed following a ballot of the shareholders at the AGM. The Secretary position was previously appointed by the Board of Directors and there was no mention of a Treasurer, as this is a new officer created this year.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Aaron Fox, your outgoing President, for his valued service to the Club. I know that the Board will miss Aaron’s obvious skills as President in summarizing the various points of view expressed by different Directors and then focussing the discussion to reach a consensus and ultimate resolution. We will also miss Aaron’s very thorough knowledge of the Club’s Bylaws. I also want to thank Dwayne Anderson for his valued contribution as a Director over the years, as Chair of the Audit & Finance Committee and ultimately as the Club’s Vice President. Due to commitments at work, both Aaron and Dwayne decided stand down following the April 15, 2013 Annual General Meeting. I want to welcome our two new Directors to the Board. Robert Haynes and Ed Meredith bring with them a strong business background and this experience has already become apparent in the two board meetings that have already occurred since their appointment. For the current year, as President, I anticipate working closely with our General Manager and the Board of Directors on the following priorities:  Monitoring the Club’s financial results generally, and specifically its spike lounge operations  Ongoing review of the tee sheet administration  Reaching a decision on hole number 4 and moving forward with Phase 2 of the Strategic Plan  Assessing any potential returns to the Club from developing its excess lands  Monitoring the Club’s planned expenditures compared to its long range cash flow projections  Responding to flooding concerns and the potential for a slow start to the 2013 season  Reviewing the current Bylaws with a view to facilitating interested individuals putting forward their names for election as directors  Identifying and assessing opportunities for generating additional activities in the Clubhouse to permit year-round food and beverage operations. Please feel free to speak to me or to any other board member if you have questions or concerns. John K. Aitken, President

Message From the Women of the Wascana Preparations for the 2013 season are in full gear, now we just need to wait for Mother Nature to cooperate. We are very excited for the coming year and have planned opportunities for all the women of the Wascana. Very soon I hope we are all out at the course, looking for the binders to sign up for Tuesday and Saturday tee times. Please make note that over the winter the binders have moved and multiplied. The binders are no longer located in the Pro Shop, instead you will find them in the Ladies Locker Room. Over the winter there is a new binder amongst the section binders – the Wascana Women binder. The new binder will be used to sign up for Tuesdays after 3:00 - women members and their guests and for Saturdays- all women welcome, no section affiliation required. Section binders will continue to be the means to sign up for Section play on Tuesday. If you have any questions on how to sign up and play please drop me a note, give me a call or talk to your section captain. Rule the Course with Wine and Cheese is a new event planned for June this year. This evening will feature wine, cheese and a fun way to look at the rules of golf. We will look at the application of the rules at the Wascana, featuring our own members! Stay tuned, sign up and have some fun with the Women of Wascana.
