a jasmine infused, self-heating eye-mask, which is the ultimate in interstellar relaxation. For the month of October when overnight guests check-in and quote SWEET DREAMS on arrival at one of our seven luxurious hotels they will receive one with our compliments,” Julie added. Phil McCartan, Hastings Hotels’ resident sleep expert and housekeeping manager at the Stormont Hotel who has taught Gary Barlow, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and Chris Evans how to make a bed, has put together her top tips on getting a good night’s sleep.

• Avoid Caffeine: Limit your caffeine intake in the hours before bed. Caffeine is a stimulant and can affect your quality of sleep. • Nightly brain dump: Write down any stresses or worries you might have before going to bed and leave them on the piece of paper. • Switch Off: A recent study showed that using an iPad set at top brightness for two hours suppresses the normal night-time release of melatonin, the sleep hormone. Try to also have at least an hour before bed without TV, phones or computers.

• Sunlight: Spend more time outdoors, especially at the beginning and end of the day. The less connected you are to natural cycles of darkness and light, the harder it is to adjust to the time change. Hastings Hotels were recently voted Ireland’s top luxury hotel group in the Travel Media Awards and have earned a host of accolades at the Luxury Lifestyle Magazine Awards. The Grand Central Hotel in Belfast was named as the Best City Hotel and the Slieve Donard was voted the Best Spa Wellness Resort in the UK magazine’s readers’ awards. Hastings Hotels announces results of largest ever sleep survey Snoring Announced Northern Ireland’s Most Annoying Habit in Bed

Three times more people rate their partner’s snoring (43 per cent) as the most annoying habit in bed, than the next most hated characteristic, stealing the duvet (13 per cent), the Hastings Hotels National Sleep Survey has found. Northern Ireland’s leading collection of hotels surveyed 8,500 people to find out what really influences our sleeping and bedtime habits. Other annoying habits include partners coming to bed late (7.5 per cent) and using screens (4.6 per cent). Respondents cited partners pretending not to hear the children during the night, playing videos in bed and waking them up to say that they were snoring as some of the most

annoying night-time irritations. Despite all of this, 42 per cent of people prefer to have company in bed while a sleep-loving 24 per cent like it all to themselves. The perfect combination for a good night’s sleep is a good mattress, comfortable bedding and the correct room temperature, according to three quarters of respondents “Room temperature and noise were the two top factors inhibiting sleep followed by uncomfortable pillows and mattresses,” said Julie Hastings, Marketing Director of Hastings Hotels, recently voted Ireland’s top luxury hotel group. “When it comes to winding down, one in four said that reading a book or listening to music helps them

achieve a restful sleep. Meditation, a hot bath or a warm drink are the go-to solutions for the remaining 25 per cent of people.” “Bed quality features as one of the top factors for a good night’s sleep and influences almost three-quarters of hotel bookings. We are delighted to find that nine out of ten respondents who had stayed in a Hastings Hotel rated it either high quality or very high quality. “Our Cloud Beds, which are now famous in their own right, are made bespoke for us by King Koil in Kildare and feature a deep pillow layer, hand filled with blends of soft cushioning for that ‘floating on clouds’ experience. We also offers guests the chance to enjoy a Spacemask,

Hotel Indigo® opens in one of Britain’s oldest cities - Chester

IHG® (InterContinental Hotels Group) has announced the opening of its sixteenth Hotel Indigo® in the UK, in the heart of the notable city of Chester. Within walking distance to one of the oldest racecourses in Britain and numerous historical attractions, Hotel Indigo® Chester is the perfect choice for a weekend getaway. Only a short drive from some the UK’s most vibrant cities, Manchester and Liverpool, Chester has become a popular destination for guests to enjoy a short break. Steeped in history, the city is home to sites that hold great historical significance, including the best surviving Roman Fortress Wall in Northern Europe, Britain’s largest Roman Amphitheatre, the oldest racecourse in Britain and a onethousand-year-old cathedral with some of Europe’s finest examples of medieval carvings Featuring 75 rooms, the much-awaited boutique Hotel Indigo Chester,

combines elements from the city’s local character and charm, with vibrant colours and textures to give the hotel a residential look and feel. Just as no two places are alike, no two Hotel Indigo® properties are the same. The hotel’s design reflects the surrounding neighbourhood by drawing inspiration from three key elements of the city – the material layers of its architecture, the iconic 1897 Eastgate Clock and the world-famous Chester Racecourse. True to the brand’s unique design credentials, Hotel Indigo Chester offers guests a selection of three individually designed room types that differ by floor.

Each room type has its own narrative helping to tell the neighbourhood story: • The Racecourse Room nods to the Chester Racecourse (also known as Roodee) with cleverly hidden horse racing motifs dotted around the room to capture the essence of the racecourse and the traditional tack room and stable. Original horse-riding equipment such as bits and stirrup leathers have been used in the design, together with the iconic red circle winning post featured in the bedroom mirror. Betting odds can also be found printed on the side tables giving the room a fun but sophisticated look.

The Chester Rows Room is themed around the iconic buildings seen all over the city, featuring black and white timber panels, and ornate architectural detailing. Bespoke painted gold stenciling adorns the painted paneling and is echoed in the gold mesh wardrobe detail. The Eastgate Clock Room is inspired by an iconic symbol of Chester, the Eastgate Clock. The design of the rooms plays with vibrant reds, soft jade and gold metals, while the geometry of the clock is simplified and imprinted in a subtle and interesting way throughout the room.

Bethan Johnston, General Manager, Hotel Indigo Chester, said: “At Hotel Indigo we believe in providing more than just a good night’s sleep, we want to create an experience as unique as the neighbourhood in which we are found. With our unique design and thoughtful touches inspired by the local history and surrounding influences, guests can get a flavour of the neighbourhood through our hotel before heading off to explore the city for themselves.”

Karan Khanna, Managing Director, UK&I, IHG, said: “Hotel Indigo® is now in more than 100 different and vibrant neighbourhoods globally. Chester, with its rich history and reputation as one of Europe’s prettiest cities is the perfect fit for our newest opening and we look forward to opening our arms to guests from around the world as well as our local neighbours.” Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the hotel’s new fine dining restaurant Wood Chester, from award winning 2015 MasterChef champion Simon Wood. The design of the 96 cover restaurant nods to Simon’s signature style. Set in a relaxed environment to enjoy his unintimidating fine dining, it is the perfect new outlet for locals and hotel guests. At the heart of the restaurant is the chef ’s table and theatre kitchen providing the perfect vista for guests to watch Simon and his team as they work. Evening diners can also sample Simon’s famous seven or ten course blind tasting menu, created with fresh seasonal produce. The restaurant also features a private dining room that accommodates up to ten people for a meeting or dinner.

Breakfast at the hotel offers a variety of guests’ favourite dishes such as a full English, poached eggs and avocado on sourdough toast and pancakes with crispy bacon and maple syrup, all alongside an extensive continental buffet. There are more than 103 Hotel Indigo properties open globally with more than 99 in the hotel pipeline, including Japan’s first Hotel Indigo Hotel Indigo® Hakone Gora due to open later this year. In Europe alone, there more than 31 hotels open in key neighbourhoods with a further 18 due to open in the next 3-5 years*. Recently, IHG opened the highly anticipated Hotel Indigo® Venice – Saint’Elena, the first IHG branded property on the island of Venice and Hotel Indigo® Stratford upon Avon, in the heart of Shakespeare’s home town. Hospitality lighting is our specialism

Ensuring the right lighting for your restaurant, bar or hotel project takes a lot more effort than you might think. You need to find a balance between what looks good, what your budget allows and what is available to you within your project time restraints. This is where specialist hospitality lighting companies like Chantelle Lighting come in. We have 30 years’ experience working with designers, architects, contractors, managers and more, ensuring the smooth delivery of lighting for projects around the UK, Europe and the rest of the world. From simple bedside wall lights to six metre crystal chandeliers, adorned with jewels imported from around the world, no job is too big or too small.

Not only do we manufacture our own stylish, high quality products that are on trend and look great, we also supply them in large quantities and carefully ship them to your chosen destination. We carefully consider the needs of each and every project, constantly offering advice and asking questions to make sure the solution meets the brief, as well the practicalities of the space.

To us, understanding what ambience you want your lighting design to achieve is just as important as the budget you have to spend.

It is our job to make the lives of our clients easier; not more difficult! As such, we draw on over three decades’ experience to offer measured and considered advice at every stage of the process. Unless of course, you are seeking an off-the-wall, bespoke fitting, of course – that’s where we let our imaginations run wild and we’re yet to disappoint! Designers and architects need reassurance that they are collaborating with a knowledgeable, experienced lighting specialist they can trust to deliver results from concept to completion. That’s exactly what they get from us, taking a simple sketch to reality, through various stages of 3D renderings, sample creations to delivery of the actual product. Alternatively, if they’re looking for an off-the-shelf product, or range of products, available to them at fast turnaround speeds, that too we can deliver. To us, it’s all about meeting individual needs and demands.

We’re also here to consider the logistics of getting the lights on site; trust us, that is all too often a last minute consideration until, the fitting won’t go through the door! We know how to transport those fragile items seamlessly, what needs to be considered before the fitting gets to site and what potential tools, machinery and manpower is needed to get them in situ. Some of these fittings are extremely weighty! Lest not forget the service you receive from Chantelle Lighting throughout; design, quality, efficiency and price are all vital elements, but experience a poor service and its that you’ll remember above anything else. Chantelle Lighting is a family firm which puts your interests at the heart of everything we do; you look good, we feel good. To discuss your next project, please contact us on 01282 877877 or email

Could Order-at-Table add value to your business?

For many years Apps have ruled

the roost when it comes to ordering takeaways and deliveries, but there has been an ever-increasing growth in ‘Order-at-Table’ Apps over the last few years, but do they actual work? And more importantly, do they add value? So, what is Order-at-Table? Well it’s pretty much what it says it is on the tin, the ability for the customer to place an order, at their table, using their own smartphone. No staff required and in most cases the customer pays the bill by card up front. The order is then fulfilled by the bar and/or kitchen staff and taken direct to the table chosen when ordered.

Sounds fairly simple, and to be honest it is, as you are not adding anything new to the process, you’re just removing the need for the customer to queue and place an order at the bar or with a member of staff. In many cases, giving the customer the ability to place the order themselves saves them an average of 15 minutes of waiting time per visit. This not only means they are happier; it also means they can depart a bit faster too, which offers you the ability to turn tables quicker, and serve more customers.

A study done by Velocity in 2019, showed that 40% of people said they would be more likely to eat out more often if they could order and pay via an App. So not offering this service could be putting people off from visiting you, or at least visiting more often.

The way people spend their money has changed in the last 5 to 10 years, with a huge switch from cash to card and more recently to contactless and App payments. In a conversation with the owner of WA Pubs in Preston, who recently launched their own ‘Order-at-Table’ App, powered by App4, Lee pointed out that “in 2011 around 85% of all transactions were cash, whereas today it is more like 60% card/ contactless, 60% card/contactless, and this only increases every quarter”. Clearly offering this kind of service has some great financial benefits to the business, and the customers also have a lot to gain, so how easy is it to implement? Talking to Lee who has put this into two of his 3 pubs so far, he said;

“We initially met with App4 at their offices in Derby to go over everything we needed. It was clear that they had a wealth of experience in the sector and they were very clear in what they provided and made sure that their solution met our needs exactly. Once we had signed up, App4 were very quick to get the ball rolling with the App design and they worked with our IT consultant to make sure everything was setup as needed. After a couple of weeks, the App had been built and submitted and we received a box of equipment for each site. All we had to do was plug in the printer and tablet provided and connect the tablet to the internet. We then had a 30-minute training call to go over everything and we were up and running. We have been live for a few months now and the reaction from our customers has been amazing, with great initial uptake, which has continued to grow every week.

So far, we have seen a reduction in waiting times at busy periods, as people are not going to the bar and queuing, they are simply ordering at the table. We have also noticed an increase in individual customer spend, as people are exploring more of our drink and food menus.Overall, we are very happy with how the App has worked and really pleased we chose to work with App4 as they have helped us all the way through the process and continue to support us on a regular basis. We will be rolling this out across the venues in the group over the next few months, as well as introducing a takeout service in a few of our venues, also through the App.” If you’re looking at ways to encourage more customers to visit your business and to increase customer loyalty and spend, come and speak to App4 on Stand E266 and talk to us about our Order-at-Table system and how it could work for you too.

Manual Donut Machine

Some of our clients use donuts as a part of a much bigger menu of items for their customers, and as a result they do not need the volume (or the cost) of our more professional set ups. Some have donut fryers themselves and just need the tools to make the donuts with their current fryer, and some have everything but the fryer. This is why we stock our incredibly robust and easy-to-use manual donut fryer, the DS-4 and manual hand depositor, for placing the donut batter into the donut fryer at the desired shape. You still have all the control of the other options above, but at a greatly lowered cost. The best part? We sell the fryer and depositor separately, so whether you are looking to incorporate donuts into your business from scratch or you are just looking to upgrade your current setup to more robust equipment, Donut Square are the people for you. We currently stock both the DS2-4 Fryer & Manual Hand Depositor at our facility in Reading, meaning you can order straight through our website and receive your new equipment within a few days of ordering.

Automatic Donut Machine

The most popular of our machines, the DS1200 & DS600 models are designed for high-volume, high-quality donuts with the control you need to make donuts exactly how you believe a donut should be. You have complete control over the size of the donuts (from small ball shaped donuts to much larger ring-shaped donuts) as well as the level of crispiness of your donut batter. This unparalleled level of control as well as the safety of the machine’s design have resulted in a machine making setup that is widely used by so many in the donut industry. With a maximum output of over 1100+ donuts an hour, it is no wonder that our clients have nicknamed our machines as “The Queue-Busters”.

Semi-Automatic Donut Machine

Many of our clients asked us about a more mobile, lighter option for their donut-making requirements, so we created a brand new machine to match their needs. Our newest design, the DS123 Semi-Automatic donut machine combines our robust donut fryer with our state-of-the-art automatic hopper (donut depositor) in an ergonomic and efficient manner. With an optionable 2kW & 4kW power supply, you can be sure that your machine will work no matter the location, and still provide you with the tastiest donuts. The machine is easily operated by a single person (with little training) and can produce over 300 donuts per hour. At a much smaller cost, this machine is an ideal choice for someone that wants a smaller scale donut operation in their business.

Comprehensive Donut Training

Whilst it is not at all necessary, many customers have felt they benefited immensely from our comprehensive training programme, in which we teach our clients: - How to properly maintain their donut machinery - Clean their equipment with our Number 1 & Number 2 Cleaning Agents and our Brush Kit (available on our website here: Cleaning) - Operate their machine in accordance to it’s intended use - Learn to make different types & styles of donuts - Filtering & managing the oil for the machines (major cost-cutting tips!) ...and much more!

07 Warm Welcome

Harrison Transforms Iconic St Austell Brewery Pub Multi-discipline brand design consultancy, Harrison, has overhauled popular Cornwall pub, The Oystercatcher. The extensive two-year project combined new branding, integrated interior design and architecture to deliver a contemporary look and feel that highlights the venue’s stunning views of Polzeath Beach – one of Cornwall’s most renowned surfing destinations. With a new expansive extension, the St Austell Brewery-owned The Oystercatcher, which stands on top of the Polzeath village hill, now boasts a large-scale glazed frontage, which has tripled the internal covers, and frames stunning panoramic views of the beach and surrounding countryside. The massive extension has not only enlarged the dining space, but also allowed for the creation of an external seating area.

“We wanted to bring in elements of nature, surfing (the bar is in a surfing hotspot) and the beach, but of course didn’t wanted to create anything overly themed. The main challenge was to ensure that we updated the space but didn’t create a disconnect between the atmosphere vibe of the bar and the rest of The Oystercatcher building – which is also a hotel. We are extremely happy with the final design, and it feels like The Oystercatcher now has a fitting look and feel to match its incredible bar view.” Steve Worrall, Retail Director, St Austell Brewery says: “We’re delighted with the finished results of the Oystercatcher’s refurbishment and extension. Harrison have delivered an iconic venue – in keeping with its unrivalled views of Polzeath coastline - that perfectly fits with our initial brief.” Harrison’s work with The Oystercatcher also included the inception of a new logo and branding, which now boldly unifies signage, menus and staff uniforms. The Oystercatcher is open now and joins the Harrison family portfolio of work which spans across design, strategic thinking, insights, demographics and trend analysis with intelligent storytelling.

Inspired by natural materials, the surfing ties of the area and the nearby beach, the Harrison team have created a space that brings in light, and a current finish that works seamlessly with the original building structure. With an extension of space into the dining area, The Oystercatcher is now able to maximise its food offering and with more floor space, increase the profit opportunity of the already popular bar. Kevin Grima, Creative Director, Harrison, comments: “We were tasked by the team at St Austell Brewery to help update The Oystercatcher and also to look at ways to expand the outside space – keeping in mind the importance of any changes to help escalate the profitability of the venue.
