his is my drawing of an object using different shapes of different colors and sizes to portray an object. The picture/object that I picked to draw is a picture of a 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1. I made this drawing using Adobe Illustrator and the mouse, because the mouse is easier to use when it comes to creating and modifying shapes instead of using the bamboo tablet and pen, which is better for just free drawing and drawings objects with just lines. I made this drawing with a lot of different shapes of different color and size to portray the object accurately. The first step to creating an image like this is to find a good picture you want to draw, (that is of good quality, good light source, picture of a real object not a drawing, etc), and place it into Illustrator so you can typically trace it but with the use of shapes.
I then began to draw my image using shapes and starting to place those shapes one on top of another just like layers so there wouldnâ€™t be any extra space that would show through. In performing the first step I used just basic shapes of similar colors. For the second step I went back and focused directly on different parts of the image individually and made those parts more realistic and lifelike by putting shapes of different colors and sizes into that part of the image at close quarters to make it look perfect when you look at the whole overall image. Finally I went around the whole image I am drawing until I was happy with the base image then I needed to start in on creating the shadows and light reflections on the object to give it that even more realistic look and to tell where the light source is coming from.
In this drawing I arranged the elements (in this case the different shapes) the way that I did to make the viewer see the object for what it is without any confusion, which in my drawing is a car, along with its own unique light source and shadows and giving it a different perspective then a normal flat two dimensional object and giving it depth and making it real and concrete. The first thing I want the viewer to see is the overall car, which stands out first off because of the bright orange color of the car along with the white spots that are the number decals on the car against a darker background image. The second thing I want the viewer to see are the reflections of the sun that are on the object in the picture along with its shadows to give it that three dimensional feel. Thirdly I want the viewer to see the background image of the race track to give it that realistic feel and not just a plain two dimensional image. I used shapes to create this object because shapes are easier to manipulate and move to where you want them to portray the object more accurately and easily than it is with just lines. I drew a car, more specifically a mustang, because I have a fascination with cars and find cars easier to portray then trying to draw an actual person, animal, flower, or something else along those lines.
After we created our final draft of our shape objects we created matrices of that image by making it monochromatic (using one color with different shades of that color) and then extreme-chromatic (using two colors with different shades of those colors) along the top of the matrix and then along the side of the matrix making the image with a different type of brush stroke to give it a different look and feel and then making it extreme by increasing the size of the brush stroke. The further you go from the original image in the top left corner the more extreme the image becomes. I made these drawings using Adobe Illustrator and the mouse, but only to typically select the type of changes I wanted to make to the image. Each image I created had some sort of variation from the original image, be it the color of the image (monochromatic or extremechromatic) or the brush strokes of the image or some combination of those. The use of each different variation or style added a new concept and meaning to each individual picture. These were fairly simple to create and the resulted in an interesting matrix of pictures once they were all compiled and viewed together. Here are a few variations of my original shape drawing along with the matrix.

uring our second week of class we began our development of our drawings skills on the computer by drawing different object with just lines, either horizontal or vertical; just to get the basic shape of the object down. I made these drawings using Adobe Illustrator and the bamboo tablet, which allowed me to use a special pen to draw on the tablet to let whatever I draw appear on the screen in front of me. I made these drawings using 100 strokes of either vertical or horizontal lines, without actually drawing the outline of the object I was trying to portray. I started off by looking at an object that is in front of me and determining the best way to draw the image to make it how I want it to be portrayed. Then I start drawing my lines, while counting stroke by stroke, until I reach 100, going up and down the object until I believe I have a good image of the item I am drawing. The reason I arranged the elements of my image, in this case the 100 strokes, is to give a representation of an object without actually drawing the outline of that object. I used the directional lines that I did for each object to give that object the fullest shape. I first want the viewer to see the overall form and shape of the object I am drawing. Secondly I want the viewer to see curves of each object to understand what the object is. Thirdly I want
them to notice the small curves or changes in the overall shape to see the uniqueness of the objects. Each of the objects I drew were some sort of vessel or something that can hold liquid. These are my 5 (100 stroke) vessel drawings.

uring week three of our class we continued developing our drawing skills but now we added a few different concepts to our drawings such as different shades of greys so whoever is looking at the drawings can tell where the light source is coming from and such. I made these drawings using Adobe Illustrator and a Bamboo tablet and pen to allow my drawings appear directly onto the computer. I made these drawings with straight or slightly curved horizontal lines that range from different shades of black, white, and grey to give it a shadow affect. The first step to creating an image like this is to find an object you want to draw then either use natural light or give
your own light source to the object to give it a unique shadow feature. I then began to draw my image using a lighter color on the scale and typically fill in the parts of the object that have light on them or appear to be lighter than the rest of it with horizontal lines. After that I moved to the other end of the spectra and picked a dark color and began to draw in the dark or shadowed areas on the object. Then after that I used some of the different shades of color on the scale that fall between the original two colors that I used earlier, on the areas of the object that arenâ€™t at either end of the dark/light scale and have a sort of blending feature. Finally I went back with all the colors that I used and try to fill in as much
white empty spots with them, but of course with the appropriate colors. The first thing I want the viewer to see are the light parts of the objects to understand which direction the light source was coming from. The second thing I wanted the viewer to see are the darker spots on the image to show how exactly that object was facing when the light source hit it. Thirdly I want the viewer to see how I blended the dark, light, and the in between colors to give it that sort of mixed blend look that you see between the light and shadow parts of the object. I used horizontal lines when creating these drawings because I
feel they are easier to draw and use when it comes to trying to portray and image with a shadow affect on it. Each object I drew had some sort of hole or opening on its top to give a real shadow effect and make it easier to differentiate between the light and dark parts of the object. These are my value drawings, our in class original assignment and four others.

hen we started to talk about modifying images in different ways such as the brush stroke and changing the color of the image, we worked with some images we originally created in class. For this first lesson I used my original shaded cup drawing we created in class and changed the color to monochromatic and then to extreme-chromatic and I also changed the brush stroke. After I altered the image in several different ways, I opened each image and placed them in a matrix like format to see how the progression of change took place going from the original image to the extreme-chromatic with the extreme brush stroke.
Color and Texture Drawings D
uring the next week of class we made another step forward and added colors to our drawings along with using both horizontal and vertical lines in the same drawing to give it that more realistic feeling. I made these drawings using Adobe Illustrator and a Bamboo tablet and pen. I made these drawings with straight or slightly curved horizontal and vertical lines of different thickness. If it was a color drawing then I picked a color along with different shades of that same color, so about four or five different shades to use, otherwise if it was a texture drawing I had to pick a shape (single letter or number) and use only that shape to create a background originally and then a depiction of an object with the use of different shades of the same color just like the color drawings, but I picked different colors for the background and the actual object to make it stand out more. The first step to creating a color or texture image is to find an object you want to draw then either use natural light or give your own light source to the object to give it a unique shadow feature. I then began my color drawings by picking a color that was in the medium
range and typically drew the overall whole shape of my object. After that I moved to the lighter end of the color spectra and used that color to start shading in or drawing the lighter areas of the object, then the same thing is done with a darker version of that same color and used on the dark areas of the object. Then after that I used some of the different shades of the same color I used previously on the other areas of the object that arenâ€™t at either end of the dark/light scale and have a sort of blending feature. Finally i went back with all the colors that i used and try to fill in as much white/empty spots with them, but of course with the appropriate colors. Now when it comes to creating a texture drawing I used the same guidelines as the
color drawing in regards to picking colors for the actual drawing and for the background. But for the texture drawings I picked a certain emblem for each individual picture to use as a sort of brush head. I used the emblem originally with the range of colors over and over again to create a background to draw my actual texture drawing on. Then I began my drawing using the same emblem that I chose to draw the overall shape of the object then I used the same principles as the color drawings to show the light and dark parts of the object I am trying to portray. Then while drawing the object I would focus on a certain part of the drawing and get closer, use smaller versions of the emblem I picked to draw with and make that certain part more exact and look better then move on to the rest of the object till I was completely done.

The first thing I want the viewer to see is the juxtaposition of the lighter parts of the objects to understand which direction the light source was coming from and the darker spots on the image to show how exactly that object was facing when the light source hit it. Secondly I want the viewer to see how I used different hues and values to portray the light and dark part of the object even more accurately and show a sort of mix or blend of the colors to give it a nice flow from one part of the object to the next. Thirdly I want the viewer to see the different amounts of saturation I used in the images to give it a more dramatic look.

For these pictures I used horizontal and vertical lines because I feel they are easier to use when it comes to having to draw an image with a shadow effect on it. Each object I drew was some sort of bottle or vessel because I think drawing those type of objects are easier to differentiate between the light and dark parts of the object especially with the curvature of the object. These are my three color drawings and three texture drawings.

n my class we were instructed to bring in old damaged family photographs to fix with the use of photoshop. We fixed our pictures with the use of several tools including the spot removal tool, the clone stamp, the patch tool, and
several others. After we got rid of the cracks, rips, and other types of damage we change the color of the picture to give it that nostalgic look and feel. Finally we added a border or vignette to make the important parts of the image stick out compared to the unimportant edges or corners.

n my digital imaging class, one of our first assignments was to create several montages with the use of only images that our teacher took or has in his folder of images on the computer. So for the first montage I went with a car theme. I chose the diamond plate background image because I feel that is one of the few images my teacher had in the folder that is sort of car related and would look decent for the theme and concept I was going for. This picture includes a picture a Ford Thunderbird which i modified the color to be blue from the original color of red. I then added the car to a road backdrop and added those to a picture background/frame to make it look as if it were an actual picture. On the bottom of the picture i added text to tell the viewer of the picture the year and type of car, so in this case it is a 1957 Ford Thunderbird. After that I cropped several images out of other images and placed along the border of my montage, which include a stop sign, a walk sign, and an expressway sign, which are all related to cars and transportation in some way. Finally I added nuts to the corners of the image to make it look like its being hung up on a wall, plus they are also related to cars.

his is my photo montage I did in my Digital Imaging class with the use of photoshop and images supplied by my teacher. I wanted to create an image to show to show my hatred for macs. So in this image I combined an image of a computer, an apple, a fire, a cd, a broken screen, and a person that when combined along with the text in the image has an overall message of how people claim that macs donâ€™t break down. I felt as though I did a good job at combining these images along with making sure the opacity of the image was correct to give it the right look. Overall I am pleased with how this montage came out.

his is another photo montage I created in my digital imaging class. I call this a Route 66 montage because it has that old time small town feel to it. I combined several images which include the building, the finger sign, the truck, the yellow car, the road in the window, and the guy in the door. The hardest part of this montage was adding the road into the window, because i wanted the road to show through but I still wanted the broken glass to show up also. This took a lot of time and use of the quick selection tool in photoshop, but when I finished I was very pleased with the result. Everything in the image has that old time feel to it, except for the man with the fire behind him in the door, that was just random and fun, which is why I added him.
Family Tree T
his is another type of photo montage I created from my digital imaging class. Except this time I combined pictures of each of my family members and their spouses to show the generations of my family along with how sons look like their father, daughters look like their mothers, and such. Most of the pictures I used were from each person’s wedding except for a few because I could not find a wedding image of them. After I added all the images to the background of the sky, I put a stroke or frame around each image to separate it from the rest of the sky. The next step was to add everyone’s name under their images to more clearly define who each person is and how they are related to one another. The final
step was to add a drop shadow to each image and each set of text. I made each shadow appear as if it was coming from the light source in the middle of the image. The hardest part of this montage was to make sure the text was readable in each spot in the image, some parts are darker and some parts are lighter in the image thus I had to change the color of the text depending on where it was located to make it easier to read and more appealing. Overall I am very pleased with how this image came out and how well it portrays my family.

Painting on Images
-This is a painted picture of myself I created in my digital imaging class with the use of photoshop
uring the one week in my digital imaging class we learned about how to paint on an image without actually destroying the original image or copying over it. We started this project like any other photoshop project by creating a copy of the image as a background copy layer so that the original image would be protected and I would not have to worry about losing that image. We also used only images of ourselves that were taken in class because it is easier to paint or modify an image of ourselves then it is to on someone else’s image or another picture. For this project our teacher also wanted us to download a few different paint brushes from the internet to use in the creation of out painted image. I started off creating this image by creating masks for each different part of the image that I wanted to modify, such as the background, my hat, my glasses, my lips, my eyes, and my shirt. The reason I created a different mask for each object is because this allows me to color on that object with-
out having to worry about going out of the lines and coloring on another part of the image that I did not want to. I went with a black and white theme because it seemed to work well with what I wanted to accomplish with this project. For the background of the image I made it gradient and go from black to white and then I used a few downloaded brushes of music levels and used a contrasting color to make them stand out. Next I colored each mask i created with both white and black to carry the common theme through the whole image. Finally I added a few more brush strokes that i downloaded such as the skull that I added on my shirt, my hat, and in the middle of my eyes, along with the bones on my shirt. Overall I think I did a good job on it and fulfilled the requirements of the project correctly.

his was another project we had to create for our digital imaging class with the use of photoshop. Once again we used images of ourselves because it is easier for someone to mess with an image of themself compared to an image of someone else. Just like the painted image I started off creating this image by making a background copy of the image so the original would not be destroyed or lost. The next step is to create different masks for each part of the image you want to put a filter on so you donâ€™t put just one filter over the whole image. The different areas that I wanted a different filter for include my skin, my hat, my shirt, the background, my glasses, and my eyes and lips. The background was just a simple black to red gradient along with a few smoke brushes added for that demonic look. For my hat I added a filter to it to make it that sort of broken glass look but to also make it look brown
and not black like it originally was. I also gave my hat horns to make it even more scary or demonic. The next step was to filter my shirt which made it the opposite color of what it original was, which happened to be grey. After that I changed to my skin to a greyscale filter. I left my glasses their original color because I felt black glasses would look great. The final steps I took to give this image the whole demonic look was the make my lips look like blood, and to make my eyes black and red as if possessed. Overall I am very pleased with the result of this image, there might be a little too much smoke in the background but never the less it gives it a nice affect.

or my digital imaging class, our one project was to take pictures of different objects and categories but not to completely modify them in photoshop but to only play with the color, hue and saturation, the brightness, and other attributes like those. Most of the pictures I took were gloomy and kind of dark considering they were taken on a cold winter day in downtown Chicago when it actually snowed the night before. This made it a great opportunity to take pictures and brighten them up with the computer. After I uploaded them to the computer and messed around with the different attributes of each image individually

this is how they turned out. I am happy with how bright and appealing they look compared to the original takes of these photos. We were allowed to modify a few images, more than just the attributes. So I added myself into one of the pictures I took to make it look as though my face was on the squirting brick statues. The second modified image was more of a montage of all the fixed pictures I took of downtown Chicago along with simply text on the image. I added all four images I took to a black background with a little bit of black
spacing in between each image so it did not look cluttered. I have been told by several people that this image could be used as a post card for Chicago. Overall this was one of our easier projects to do, but it was still interesting and a very knowledgeable learning experience. I am very happy with how my pictures and montage came out.

!19th Century Artist Reborn
-A painting of a Firebird remake created in Corel Painter with the Van Gogh paint brush.

hese two pictures were created with the program Corel Painter. I created these images by first off, loading the original images as a background image and using that as a layout and then I used the auto-painting feature to paint these images with the use of different brushes such as the Van Gogh and Seurat brushes. After the auto-painting went as far as I thought looked good, I stopped it and touched-up some parts of the images where there might have been blank space or not enough brush strokes. After that step I went and cloned out and erased some part of the painting to let the original image shine through and
make it seem more realistic and easier to determine what the picture is actually of. In both of these images the object being pictured is a car, so I wanted the rims and the emblems of the cars to stick out so you can clearly see the car and what type of car more specifically. This was a fun project and it was very interesting to see how the different types and styles of brushes affected how the painting turned out. When creating each image you can choose everything about the brush stroke from the type of stroke, the size, the color, the opacity, and several other options to get your image to look the way you want it to look.

My name is Michael Ward. I am graduating from St Xavier University in May 2012. I will have a Bachelor of Science in computer science. I know several programming languages including: java, html, php, and several others. I have taken a total of 14 computer classes while attending SXU. I graduated from St Laurence High School in 2008. My dream job is to work with the programming that goes into the computers that are in cars today.
