Welcome... Where do you normally get your apples from? Have you tried the little-known place on Grove Park? How about blackberries, have you ever picked some up from just off New Wanstead? It is unlikely that many of you have sourced your supplies from either of these places, even though they both offer their produce free of charge. These are two of the locations highlighted on a newly created wild food map of Wanstead. The map, which is the latest project to be launched by the Wanstead Transition Initiative, plots the locations of freely available wild food sources growing in the local area (see page 18). Collecting food in this way may lack the conveniences we are all used to, but such conveniences have to be paid for, both economically and environmentally. Making use of local resources in this way – providing, of course, it is done carefully, responsibly and within the law – is one of the many small steps the Wanstead Transition Initiative are encouraging us all to take in the journey towards a self-reliant community. If you are interested in taking a bigger step in the direction of selfsufficiency, then growing your own fruit and vegetables will be high on your agenda. Wanstead’s local allotments are in high demand, but those able to secure the rental of a patch from the Council will have a great opportunity to, quite literally, enjoy the fruits of their labour. For most, the whole process from sowing to serving will be a steep learning curve but, as the Sandersons can attest to (see page 30-31), it is also a very rewarding one. Just as the gardeners and foragers observe the changing seasons through their varying harvests, those with an eye on local wildlife will also be noticing the approach of the colder months with the arrival of various winter bird species. In particular, our local ponds and lakes will become home to some additional species of duck, arriving here to escape the even colder months further north. Our guide on pages 12-13 will help you identify the Lee Marquis, Editor ones to watch out for.

A caring innovator

Redbridge Youth Council

Tayvanie Nagendran, operations director at Cambridge Nursing Home, Wanstead, was a runner-up in the Care Innovator category of the Great British Care Awards last month.

The Council are seeking candidates for next year’s youth elections where two Youth MP’s will be selected by their contemporaries to represent young people’s interests, locally in the Redbridge Youth Council and nationally as part of the UK Youth Parliament. Voting will take place in local schools and youth centres between 30 January and 9 February 2012. Prospective candidates, who must live or study in Redbridge and be aged between 13 to 19, should submit their application by 30 November. Visit www.bit.ly/youthmps

The nursing home is currently undergoing refurbishment works, including the creation of a hair salon and resources centre that will also be open to the general public. “I am delighted to have been shortlisted for this award, which validates the work we are undertaking in Wanstead” said Tayvanie.

Wanstead’s astronomical New art and craft fairs for the history on show at The Temple run-up to Christmas

Textile artist Avril York, will be exhibiting at the next fair

Astronomer James Bradley

A new exhibition at The Temple in Wanstead Park opens this month and details how some of the greatest astronomers of the 18th century conducted their work in Wanstead. The Rector of Wanstead James Pound (16691724) and his nephew James Bradley (1693-

1762) were both Astronomers Royal and it was in Wanstead that Bradley made the first direct observational verification that the Earth orbits the Sun. The exhibition, which charts astronomy back to the ancient Greeks, will run until Sunday 9 January 2012.

Remembrance Sunday double marathon for local policeman

Competitors at last year’s event and Dave Lawrence (inset)

Local policeman and former Royal Marine Dave Lawrence has been training in and around Wanstead in preparation for the 26mile Commando 999 Speedmarch Marathon this month, raising money for The Royal Marines Association. On completion of the course the march will

proceed on to the Royal Marines National Memorial, close to Admiralty Arch, where a wreath will be laid in memory of the fallen. Following this, Dave will then run the same route in the opposite direction, covering 52 miles in total. To sponsor Dave, visit www.bit.ly/dave999

Local art and craft fairs are expanding to help Wanstead offer an alternative and characterful shopping destination to other major centres. The fairs – which are being introduced in the run-up to Christmas at the Churchill Room of Wanstead Library on Saturdays 19 November

and 17 December – are an expansion of those previously held upstairs in The George pub by Art Group Wanstead. “We can’t directly compete with Westfield, but we can offer unique gifts without shoppers even having to fork out the Tube fares,” says event organiser Donna Mizzi.

The Woodford and Wanstead Branch of the Royal British Legion are organising two services in the area to mark Remembrance Day and Remembrance Sunday. RemembRance Day 11th November at 11am A two minute silence will be held at the Garden of Remembrance, Snaresbrook Road (opposite the Eagle Pond). RemembRance SunDay

13th November at 12.30pm A remembrance service at the War Memorial, Wanstead High Street. Attendees are asked to assemble 15 minutes before each event.

Winter ducks Mallards are the default duck in Wanstead. In winter, however, they are augmented by a host of other species that migrate from their breeding grounds further north to spend the winter months in our comparatively mild climate. They may not arrive in large numbers, but if you look carefully at our local ponds over the coming months you should be able to spot them. Jonathan Lethbridge, author of wansteadbirder.blogspot.com, provides a guide

Mallard Male Mallards have patterned silvery flanks, a black and white rump and curly tail-feathers. The deep-brown chest is separated from the glossy green neck and head by a white collar. The bill is bright-yellow with a small black tip. Females are plainer, mainly brown, but well-marked and with an obvious blue patch on the wing.

Shoveler A large duck with a bill that flattens out at the end, hence their name. Males have a green head and a white chest and body, with a large chestnut flank patch and a dark back. The females have the same general colouration as Mallards, though warmer. They feed by partially submerging, but tend to go round in small circles as they stir up the sediment underwater. Found on most water bodies in Wanstead, particularly the Ornamental Waters in Wanstead Park.

Teal The smallest duck that visits in winter, a male Teal has a creamy stripe along a largely silvery back and flanks and a gold-bordered green mask on a reddish-brown head. The female resembles a small Mallard. They are often hard to spot, spending much of their time hidden under overhanging branches. Pochard A large diving duck, with males having a silver body, black chest and deep reddish-brown head, with red eyes. The females are plainer and predominantly browny-grey, with a darker neck and head. From a distance they always appear bulky, even when asleep. Like the Tufted Duck, they too are most active at night and feed by diving underwater. Most frequently encountered on Heronry Pond in Wanstead Park.

Wigeon Wigeons prefer to winter in large flocks at coastal and marshy locations, however, sometimes single birds arrive in Wanstead. Males are a silvery-grey and white, have a black tail, dark-red chest, neck and head. The head also has a broad cream crown-stripe that extends almost to the bill and a green smudge around the eyes. Females are a reddish-brown and appear quite scaly. The bill is smaller than a Mallard’s and they look round-headed.

Tufted Duck A medium-sized duck. Males are black with white flanks, the females have brown flanks. They have yellow eyes and a tuft of feathers that hangs down from the rear of their heads. They are mostly active at night and feed by diving under the water for short periods. Although a few remain all summer, including a pair that bred on Wanstead Flats, their numbers go up considerably in winter. They can usually be seen on all our ponds, with the largest concentrations in Wanstead Park.

Gadwall A medium-sized duck, with both sexes being rather plain and grey, though if you look closely the plumage is intricately patterned. The males have a black rump and a small, but prominent, white patch on the wing. They dabble like Mallards and Wanstead Park is an important wintering area for them in London. The largest numbers tend to be found on the narrower stretches of the Ornamental Water in Wanstead Park. Please mention the Wanstead Village Directory when responding to adverts

Mapping the Treasures Dan Hoye, a member of the Wanstead Transition Initiative, reports on the launch of Wanstead’s wild food map

W

© 2011 Google - Map data © 2011 Tele Atlas

anstead Transition Initiative is part of the Transition Town Movement that is growing rapidly around the UK, and the world. The Transition Town Movement is a social and environmental initiative designed to equip communities with the tools to strengthen the local economy, reduce the cost of living and prepare for a future with less oil and a changing climate.

November sees the launch of a new project for the group. The Wanstead wild food map is an attempt to highlight the large amount of food that goes to waste in our gardens and streets. At this time of year there is a bounty of unharvested wild food that people are either unable to collect or simply don’t recognise as food in this age of processed and packaged meals. The aim is to create a directory of wild food within the streets, gardens and wilder corners of Wanstead. Residents are encouraged to contact the group with the location of wild food in their area. This might be a crab apple tree in your street, a great place for blackberries or a pear tree in your garden that you are unable to harvest. For each source of wild food, the group would like to know: the location (house number and street or postcode); the type of food you have identified; and any other details you have (such as the best time of year to harvest). This information will then be collated and published on a map on the Wanstead Transition

© Dan Hoye

Wanstead Transition Initiative is made up of a group of people who live in and around the E11 postcode area. Still in its first year, the response from the community has been very encouraging. Events and workshops are held regularly, including eco-film nights and ‘green drinks’ at The Nightingale pub. With an active group of nearly one hundred locals, the Wanstead Transition Initiative aims to enable residents to learn – or relearn – essential skills such as food growing, sewing, mending, making new things from old possessions or learning about energy efficiency.

Initiative website. Anyone will be able to access the information and find out about the availability of wild food. The next step for the project will be to organise collections to pick surplus or unwanted fruit from gardens and public trees around Wanstead and distribute it amongst the local community. To start to make use of the local produce, we are organising a chutney making workshop this month (see page 61). Chutney is a great way to preserve a seasonal glut of fruit or vegetables. It is just these kind of skill-sharing sessions that the group hope will enable residents to learn the essential skills needed to make Wanstead a more connected, friendly and sustainable place. Visit www.transitionwanstead.org.uk for more information on sustainable living.

Local make-up artist Paula Teo, who has a PhD in literature, reflects on her unconventional career journey from academia to make-up artistry

I

was never a particularly girlie girl. I was a solemn, solitary child who loved reading, drawing and colouring. My first encounter with make-up was when, aged four or five, I made my mother a birthday card which I had ‘painted’ using her own blue eyeshadow and red lipstick. Because I was very academic and musical, everyone thought I would become a teacher, a musician, or a journalist, like my father. I studied English and Music at university and obtained a PhD in Literature; I’ve been a teacher, editor, research administrator and project manager. So how did I end up being a make-up artist? In fact, the first seed was planted while I was writing up my PhD thesis. As an antidote to sitting at my desk all day, I took up belly dance. And it was while helping other dancers to get ready for performances that I first realised the transformative power of make-up. Take a bunch of nervous amateurs, add exotic make-up, and suddenly they’re swanning around like Cleopatra. Make-up created that confidence. In 2005 my husband and I moved to Wanstead, and I started a new job. Wanstead I loved, but as for the job... it wasn’t long before I was looking for something more creative. Remembering my ‘Cleopatra’ moment, I signed up for a couple of make-up courses. This turned out to be a mixed experience. I enjoyed the learning but, at 35, I was twice the age of the other girls. Loud and confident, they all wanted to work for MTV and meet celebrities. Somehow, I didn’t feel that the ‘cool’ gigs were for me. Feeling ambivalent and somewhat disheartened, after the course I took on bits of make-up work but kept at my job. It wasn’t until I got involved with Look Good Feel Better (LGFB), the beauty industry’s charity supporting women with cancer, that I really found my niche. We run makeover workshops to help women manage the visible side effects of their treatment. This is beauty at its most therapeutic. It is a rare privilege – and enormously humbling – to be able to give someone a boost when they’re facing a difficult and uncertain time.

I realised that what motivated me was not selling a glamorous fantasy, but helping someone feel great about themselves. When we’re tired, down or unwell, make-up can literally help us face the world with a little more confidence. Since then I’ve worked with teenagers with heart defects and met many smart professional women who’ve confessed: “I have no idea how to apply make-up properly. Will you show me?” And that’s how I started going to people’s homes or offices and giving make-up lessons. As far as I’m concerned, make-up has to work for real life. Busy women haven’t got time for a high-maintenance routine, so I love showing them simple yet effective tricks for looking good in a hurry. Make-up fascinates me because it’s about creating infinite effects and possibilities. The researcher in me is always asking, “How did they do that?” I’m constantly studying photos, looking up techniques and breaking things down into notes and diagrams. One client remarked, “You are a born teacher! And the notes are a great idea.” You could say I’ve changed direction, but come full circle. Paula is a freelance make-up artist and Regional Co-ordinator for Look Good Feel Better at the Royal Marsden Hospital, Fulham. She also writes, makes cards and paints glasses. Allotment life © Lee Marquis

Gemma and Sandy Sanderson have created their own self-sustainable oasis at the Redbridge Lane West allotments. Paul Donovan, a member of the Wanstead Transition Initiative, meets them

T

he original motivation for Gemma and Sandy to take up the allotment came from Sandy’s doctor. A former publican, he suffers with the rheumatic disease ankylosing spondylitis, affecting the joints. “The doctor suggested fresh air and exercise were a good idea, so we began looking at allotments,” said Sandy. Gemma works for Barclays in Canary Wharf. She sits at a computer screen for much of the week, so was also looking for a way to get outside and do something different. The couple have lived in Gants Hill for the past seven years. “This site is well placed for us, on the bus route with toilets on site,” said Sandy, who remembers that the plot was originally just grass. The transformation of the 60ft x 60ft site in four short years has been amazing to behold. It has literally been customised for Sandy and Gemma.

The couple put in a number of raised beds with wide paths between, thereby enabling Sandy to work on his hands and knees. The area has a lot of stone in the soil, so it has been a common site to see Sandy’s backside in the air as he tunnels down removing stone. The stone has then been used for the paths. Gemma and Sandy have a big commitment to sustainability in all that they do. This means growing the crops in organic fashion, without bringing in any pesticides or other chemical agents. They have also tried, wherever possible, to recycle materials. This has meant using wood reclaimed from skips to build all the border fences and raised beds. “When people do loft conversions there is always a lot of wood going spare. If it is in a skip, you can knock on the door and most people are quite happy for you to take it away,” said Sandy. One of the great advantages of allotment life is the readily available social circle of information. One

piece of advice was to stew comfrey leaves and use the resulting liquid as a feed for tomatoes. Another tip concerned filling trenches with cardboard, soggy newspapers and manure as preparation for growing things like sweetcorn and squashes. Sandy and Gemma were given cabbage and broccoli from fellow allotment holders when they first started work on the plot. Now many allotment holders come to them for advice. They recently received a highly commended citation in the Redbridge Allotment Awards. “In the summer months we don’t buy any veg or fruit,” said Gemma, who admitted that in the early days they tended to get gluts of certain crops, like runner beans, but they have now learned to stagger things. There is also a lot of storage at home. Tomato chutney and jams require preparation. Then potatoes and onions can be stored away once dried off. For crops like beans, freezing is the way to keep them for the lean winter months. “We need to look at buying another freezer now,” added Gemma.

Another striking element about the allotment are the flowers on display. Most have a purpose, like the marigolds for keeping white fly off the crops. Then there are the imposing sunflowers, which as well as presenting a striking image also provide seed to feed the birds. The plot is also well stocked with fruit. There are strawberries, logan berries and raspberries. There are also lots of blackberries around the borders of the plot along with five compost bins and a number of water butts. In the push for self-sufficiency, Gemma and Sandy are now looking to move into bees and chickens. The chickens will have to be at home, though the bees might yet be seen in Redbridge Lane West. “Sandy bought me a bee keeping course for Christmas last year. We finished the course in June and got some bees and a hive in July. There will be honey next year,” said Gemma. Many allotment sites have bee hives but they are not permitted at Redbridge Lane West. “At one site production doubled when bees were introduced,” said Gemma, who hopes that bee hives may, in time, be permitted at the Wanstead site. Gemma and Sandy certainly recommend allotment life. They spend most of their weekends at the plot, with Sandy making the odd visit in the week during the summer. “We love it. We come down with coffee and sandwiches and make a day of it. There

are decent people around to chat with so there is a social network as well,” said Gemma. “They call allotments green gyms, what could be a better way of getting healthy,” said Sandy. “There is the exercise involved in working on the plot, then the goodness you get from the food produced.” One day, when the couple retire, they hope to get a bigger area to push the self-sufficiency dream on further. It would then also be possible to keep animals, like pigs and sheep. That though is for tomorrow, today Gemma and Sandy continue to work their oasis in Redbridge Lane West.

Winter preparations Jack Pattison is a young entrepreneur and DIY specialist who is helping people in the community prepare for the cold snap ahead. Amy Baines talks to him about building up a trade with local people looking for a more personal service

J

ack’s DIY Store, located on Chigwell Road at the junction with George Lane, has been open since March and local lad Jack Pattison, 25, is keen to build his business upon the foundations of customer care. With the winter weather on its way, Jack is already stocking typical winter items such as coal, salt, kindling wood, heaters, gas, de-icer and snow shovels, but he will also be offering a more personal service to those people who perhaps can’t come out to stock up on their own. “There are many elderly or less able residents in the community who will really suffer in the cold weather, and with ice and snow it’s difficult for them to leave their homes. If these people order goods from us we will deliver to their door to save them the hassle” explains Jack. Florence Waller, 80, lives in Wanstead and is one of the elderly customers who has already benefited from this personal service. She said: “I’m all for supporting local businesses like this. You just don’t get the friendly service like that anymore when you go to the bigger stores.” “If Jack didn’t offer to help me out like he did in the shop with supplies for winter and helping me choose the right things and then delivering them to my home, I would never have been able to do it on my own. I think it’s really commendable what they are doing and they will get my custom every time from now on.” Jack continued: “I love the area and want to stay here and raise a family. Wanstead has a real community. I have a lot of experience of working in this trade and can offer a much more personal service compared to the big chain stores. I have time for my customers and you will see the same staff faces here in my shop each time you come.” Jack’s shop was a hardware store in a former life and he is pleased to put something back that was previously such a popular landmark in the area.

“There are no other shops like mine around here. I stock everything from general hardware and DIY needs to building supplies – it’s nice to know that the shop is living up to its former glory from more than 30 years ago,” adds Jack. “I hope local people will support me as a local resident and a local business and come and see what the shop has to offer.”

Winter car journeys In addition to preparing your home for the winter months ahead it is also a good idea to kit the car out with a basic winter survival pack. This could include: de-icer; an ice scraper; shovel; tow rope; jump leads; torch; first aid kit; map; blanket; energy food; water; spare clothing and footwear; any regular medication; and breakdown membership details.

T ooth care for K ids Does the thought of visiting the dentist fill you with dread? Do you break out in a cold sweat of sheer terror? If so, then please don’t pass this fear onto your child. Your child must be relaxed about visiting the dentist for their future health and wellbeing. Suki North reports

G

ood dental habits start young. Introduce your child to the dentist as early as possible by taking them with you when you go for your regular dental check-up. This will get them used to the sights, sounds and smells of the dental surgery. Your dentist may take a quick, casual look in your child’s mouth, ostensibly to count teeth, but also to check gently for any early problems. This will help your child to feel comfortable in the chair. Get your child used to cleaning their teeth and start as soon as the first tooth shows through their gums. Brush gently with a special baby toothbrush. Supervise teeth cleaning until they prove they are proficient enough to do it themselves. Plaquedisclosing tablets stain the plaque so your child can see it. This is good for encouraging a thorough brushing routine. An electric toothbrush especially designed for children is very effective. Fluoride toothpaste is vital, fluoride in the water is a bonus, not a replacement.

Most children have their entire set of 20 milk teeth by the age of three. Proper development of their permanent teeth depends upon the condition of these first teeth, so it’s essential to care for them. Milk teeth are small with thin enamel so problems spread quickly. Adult teeth start to grow by the age of six and most should be evident by the time they’re 13. Apart from accidents, there are two preventable causes of damage to children’s teeth; tooth decay and dental erosion. Both have similar causes. Acids from sweet foods and drinks, including fruit juices, eat into the tooth enamel. Water or milk are the best drinks for children. Fissure sealants are well worth considering. This is a special film used to cover the vulnerable molars which have deep, hard to clean crevices. The sealant protects the tooth surface from decay. Sealants are quick and painless to apply and last for several years.

Regular dental check-ups are essential to prevent future, potentially traumatic, treatment. Help your child grow up with a healthy set of teeth and gums. Good habits created while the child is young will stand them in good stead for the rest of their life.

Different types of teeth:  Incisors: Four front teeth on the top jaw and four on the bottom; used for cutting food.  Canines: Four sharp, pointy teeth, one on each side of the incisors; used to tear food.  Premolars: Eight bigger and wider teeth next to the canines, four on the top jaw and four on the bottom; used for crushing.  Molars: A total of 12 molars (including wisdom teeth), six the on top and six on the bottom, which work with the tongue to help prepare food for swallowing.
