Welcome... We live in an increasingly multifunctional world. Our phones are also our sat navs, our televisions are also our computers, our computers are also our televisions and, if you haven't updated your technology since the last century, then perhaps your alarm clock also makes the tea. We experience this versatility – perhaps somewhat more subtly – in other areas of our lives as well, not just within the technological bubble. A church, for example, is more than just a place of worship, a modern library offers more than just books and a park or open space is more than just a place to walk the dog. Almost everything we interact with can serve a different purpose to different users. Taking the example of the church, these often iconic buildings can act as a community hub and be an important focal point for local residents, irrespective of faith and religion. We have no shortage of such venues in the area, each with their own story to tell (see pages 26 and 42), and it is from such stories that we come to gain a greater appreciation for these structures and understand their significance through history.

Puzzles and competitions

Not all stories, however, are so readily documented. The history of a landmark building or parkland may be easily traced (see pages 66-67), but what of the stories of the individuals who use them. For some, the true importance of a simple open space, such as Wanstead Flats, exists on a personal level – something that is also important to document (see pages 14-15) – and it is from taking an interest in how we interact with the amenities around us that encourages others to do likewise and contribute to their preservation (see pages 38-39).

Every month

Whether you admire a church for its services to God or its services to the community, or whether you enjoy our open spaces for walking or working, through sharing our stories we can share the enjoyment of the world around us. Lee Marquis, Editor

Beating bogus callers

Shopkeeper ancestors

Details announced for this year's Music in Wanstead Park

Local neighbourhood policing teams are holding regular talks for elderly residents to help them better understand and deal with bogus callers and to provide advice on how to stay safe on the High Street and at home. PCSO Alan Winston said: "If we can stop them [the elderly] from becoming a victim of a bogus call and give them the confidence to report such incidents should they occur, then we have achieved our goal." The next talk will take place at 11am on 28 May at the Allan Burgess Centre.

The guest speaker at the month's East of London Family History Society meeting will be Sue Gibbons – a former librarian at the Society of Genealogists – who will be giving a presentation on the various methods and techniques that can be used to trace ancestors who were shopkeepers. The talk – which takes place on 28 May from 7pm at Wanstead Library – will also explore the skills and qualities that our shopkeeper ancestors needed and offer an insight into their working conditions. An exceptionally wet and early spring coupled with ample sunshine has led to an explosion of wildflowers in Wanstead Park this year, with numerous visitors to Chalet Wood – considered to be one of the best springtime places to see native UK bluebells in the London and Essex areas – citing this year's display of bluebells as the best ever. "The installation of clear walking routes through the wood has also contributed to this wonderful

Subject to the weather, the bluebells are likely to remain in bloom for the first few weeks of May.

A party atmosphere at last year's event

Music in Wanstead Park – an annual family-friendly music festival in the grounds of Wanstead Park's Temple garden – will take place on 19 July. The event, which is now in its 14 year, will feature funk, soul and disco band Payback as the evening headline act.

Local musicians will also feature, including the Wanstead Rock Choir and bands from Wanstead High School. Other activities will include a climbing wall, theatre shows, morris dancing and live snakes and owls. Tickets are £10 each (concessions: £5). Call 020 8989 4898

Local runners conquer the London Marathon

James Creed on Nightingale Green after the marathon

A total of 32 members from the Wanstead-based East London Runners club completed the Virgin Money London Marathon last month. Among them was Wanstead resident James Creed, who finished the 26.2-mile course in 3 hours and 41 minutes,

placing him in 6,968th position and raising £3,500 for SportsAid. Fastest in the group was Euan Brown, who set a debut time of 2 hours and 44 minutes and finished in 326th position, while running veteran Jim Bird completed his 29th marathon. Visit

To mark the fifth local art trail this September, Art Group Wanstead has chosen the optional theme 'Make Art, Not War'. "It's hoped that this trail, 100 years after the start of World War I, will inspire local amateur and professional artists to convey the terrible

cost of conflict and the immeasurable value of peace," explained a trail spokesperson. However, the group stresses that participating artists will be free to choose any subject matter they want, as creating virtually any kind of art will fulfil the brief. Visit

Father and son will promote Wanstead Park on cycle tour

Dwight and Lewis Wood in action ahead of their 2014 tour

Cycling enthusiast Dwight Wood and his 11-year-old son Lewis are planning to cycle some 2,650 miles around the British coastline this summer. The duo will start their adventure on 5 July, cycling approximately 50 miles a day with one rest day each week. During the

trip, Dwight – who is chairman of The Friends of Wanstead Parklands – aims to promote Wanstead Park to the people he meets along the way. To keep costs down, they are looking for anyone willing to let them 'couch surf' at each destination. Visit

“We recognise that we cannot be totally green with everything that we do. It is impossible to do, so we do not profess to do it. Instead, we are ‘greener’, which means we try our best at all times to ensure our products and services are as green as they can possibly be.” Wikaniko To order or browse other eco-friendly products for the home, visit:

Wanstead band to perform at the O2 Academy

Suburban 100 pictured in Wanstead Hairdressers

It was announced last month that local band Suburban 100 will play the O2 Academy in Islington on 5 July. Formed last year, the four-piece rock and roll group – who will be releasing their debut album ahead of the performance – have since become a regular fixture on

the London gigging scene. Band members Terry Withers, Stewart McNicol, James Mackenzie, and Richard Corbyn attribute their inspiration to 'the zeitgeist of modernday Britain'. Tickets for the gig are priced £11.25 each. Visit

Redbridge credit union

CCTV: traffic enforcement

A new credit union was launched in Redbridge last month, offering residents and businesses across the borough the chance to save and borrow responsibly. Liberty Credit Union, which already operates in Havering and Barking and Dagenham, will be working with Redbridge Council and community partners to deliver 'responsive and affordable financial services', with membership costing £1. Credit unions are not-for-profit organisations that provide alternative financial services. Visit

A report published last month claims Redbridge Council has used CCTV to generate more than £5.6 million in revenue from parking and traffic fixed penalty notices. The report, which is based on data from March 2008 to March 2013, was compiled by privacy campaign group Big Brother Watch and ranks Redbridge as the 18th highest earning authority out of more than 400 included in the report. During the five-year period, a total of 207,151 parking and traffic contraventions were captured on CCTV in the borough.

The Duke reopens as a hub for Community gardening the Wanstead community outside Wanstead station

Following a complete refurbishment, The Duke – formerly The Duke of Edinburgh – reopened last month with aims of becoming a 'modern-thinking, neighbourhood pub'. Landlord, Ronnie Finch, who grew up in Wanstead, said: "Since November, we have been busy meeting

the neighbours, finding out what they really want and getting ourselves ready to unveil a pub that our diverse range of locals will embrace." The new-look venue – located on Nightingale Lane – now features booths inside and out and an garden grill launching this month.

John Cryer's Pool Aid 2014

Dementia awareness

Leyton and Wanstead MP John Cryer held a fundraising swimming gala at the London Aquatics Centre – one of the main venues of the 2012 Summer Olympics – last month in aid of the Alzheimer's Society. The event – which was supported by a cross-party team of fellow MPs – had raised over £1,400 at the time of writing, with donations still being accepted. John Cryer said: "It was a bit embarrassing that my assembled team won, but the race was very competitive and exhausting." Visit

This month, the Alzheimer's Society are encouraging anyone who's concerned about dementia to stop 'bottling it up' and talk to someone at one of many information events taking place during Dementia Awareness Week, which runs from 18 to 24 May. Fundraising and awarenessraising events will be taking place across the country, including a session at South Woodford Library on 22 May and at Wanstead Library on 23 May, from 10am to 2pm. Local resident and guerrilla gardener Marian Temple, who maintains the planters along Wanstead High Street and the Corner House garden, has embarked on a new project to improve the area around Wanstead Tube station. Marian, who has obtained permission for the

work from Redbridge Council, would like to encourage others to get involved: "I intend to get the sad patches cleared and either planted or seeded with wild flowers. After that, I want to pull out and hope that others will take over the plots." Visit

Painting the Flats Wanstead Village Directory

A self-taught artist, Rosemary Stephens started out by painting from photographs of animals she loved. After moving to the area two years ago, she now takes inspiration from her beloved Wanstead Flats

y name is Rosemary Stephens; I am an artist and photographer. I live with my partner Barry and my two teenage sons James and Edward. As a family, we like to cycle along the local canals, where there is an abundance of nature and wildlife. I have happy memories as a young child cycling all the way from West Ham Park (near where we lived) to the Grotto in Wanstead Park. In those days, it was accessible and we would spend hours playing on the Grotto, imagining it was a fairy castle. Years later, I found myself with my children at the Grotto again. This time, it had a fence around it, but it still had that magic. That was in 2012, we had just moved next to Wanstead

Flats and that was a life-defining moment. Since then, my life has changed so much for the better, and it's got a lot do with that relocation. My family history stems from Berkshire and Oxfordshire and, even though I am a 'Cockney Sparra', deep within me was hidden a country girl with a love of nature. I have embraced the Flats and it, in return, has inspired and released my inner love of nature, which can be seen in my art. Soon after moving, I started going to an art class run by my local church, but found it hard to paint around others, so I went home and painted the geese that I so love to visit at Alexandra Lake. Once we had settled into our house, I visited the lake regularly and, slowly over time, I began

to explore the whole of the Flats. Every time I go there, there is always something new to discover. I regularly pick up litter on the Flats and, while doing this, I find so many more interesting aspects of nature, like mushrooms and toadstools, moths and butterflies – the Flats really returns my efforts with it's wonderful treasures. I walk on the Flats every day – I am passionate about it and it has helped me in so many ways. It is as good as any therapy and it's free! I recently joined the 'tidy the flats' clean-up, which occurs every second Sunday of the month. It was so lovely meeting new people and other local residents – so many people care about and love the Flats. I have also recently joined the Wren Wildlife and Conservation Group and it has been wonderful to share my love of nature and spend time with such lovely people. I have been painting for around a year and a half now and I have not looked back since I first picked up a paint brush. I have some of my work in exhibitions in America and Germany and have also had my images published in a colouring book. I have completed a solo exhibition in Bow and have another on show at CoffeE7 in Forest Gate this month. My work is very varied, I started with animals and moved on to portraits of people I love. Then my style moved to more abstract and expressive paintings – I find it so much easier to get my emotions and feelings on paper, where I can make more sense of it all. I use lots of different mediums and sometimes put them altogether in one painting. Recently, I have gone back to painting nature – this is what I love and where I feel comfortable. The topic of my current exhibition is 'The Nature of Wanstead Flats' and I hope it inspires others to take up art and start walking regularly on the wonderful Wanstead Flats.

'The Nature of Wanstead Flats' is on show until 21 May at CoffeE7, 10 Sebert Road, Forest Gate, E7 0NQ. For more information and to view more of Rosemary's work, visit

Time to settle? Stephen Watmore, a partner and head of employment law at local solicitors Wiseman Lee, answers some of the most common questions relating to settlement agreements

f your employer has offered you a settlement agreement to leave your job you may be feeling a range of emotions – shocked about being asked to leave, nervous at the prospect of facing unemployment and concerned about your financial security. On the other hand, it may have been just what you wanted. Either way, you may have many questions and will benefit from the help of an experienced employment law expert to explain the terms and effect of the settlement agreement, remove any confusion and ensure that you are happy with the proposed package. They may also be able to improve the compensation you will receive and negotiate other terms, such as confidentiality. Perhaps you are worried about a future reference or about negative comments being made about you after you have left. Below are some of the most common questions that are often asked by people in similar situations. What is a settlement agreement? A settlement agreement, formerly known as a compromise agreement, is a legal contract between an employer and an employee. It is a no-blame way of ending your employment, which usually involves you receiving financial compensation. The settlement agreement brings an end to any potential and on-going claims against your employer. You will agree not to make a claim to a civil court or an employment tribunal for compensation in the future in return for an agreed, tax-free compensation payment. What kind of situations are settlement agreements used for? A recent survey found that nearly 40% are used by employers to remove an employee who is underperforming or on the grounds of misconduct. Around 25% are used in redundancy situations and a similar number are used for the discrete removal of senior staff. Who pays for the cost of the agreement? Generally, your employer will pay the cost of you obtaining legal advice. Although this isn't

required by law, it is in the interests of your employer to ensure that all formalities are adhered to, and the best way of doing that is by meeting your costs. Can my employer insist on confidentiality within the settlement agreement? Yes, they can. Often, when a financial settlement has been made you must agree not to disclose the sum that has been decided. Other confidentiality requirements may be imposed. It's important to understand that if you breach the agreement then your employer has the right to sue you for compensation, including the return of your compensation payment. Why do I need a solicitor? For a settlement agreement to be valid, you must receive independent legal advice. Talking to the right legal expert can make all the difference in the outcome of your situation. A solicitor will be able to take the stress out of this difficult time. They will be on hand to support you in leaving your employment on the best terms possible and with dignity, enabling you to feel free to move on with your life confidently. S† Gabriel's century Ahead of a dedication festival at St Gabriel's Church in Aldersbrook, Lisa Chalmers takes a look at the history of this important community building, which was consecrated 100 years ago this month

he year 1914 is etched in our collective memories, young and old alike. School children learn how people lived, teenagers relive events through the war poets and, in today's fast-moving age, the rest of us can barely imagine the pace of life in 1914. Even before the Great War, changes were afoot in Wanstead. Building had started on the Aldersbrook Estate in 1899, which was originally part of the Parish of Wanstead. In 1903, the increasing population of the Edwardian estate justified its own tin hut church. By 1912, the tin hut was too small and renowned architect Charles Spooner was invited to submit a design for a larger, permanent building. The result was the beautiful red brick church on the corner of Aldersbrook Road and Park Road. Although worship can happily take place anywhere, the elaborate project teaches us about the priorities of local people 100 years ago. On our doorstep, the Olympic Park is developing as a community for thousands of residents with modern priorities at its heart. So far, there is no sign of a tin hut church. The church of St Gabriel the Archangel was consecrated by the first Bishop of Chelmsford on 16 May 1914, when the diocese itself was only a few months old. The new building was designed to accommodate 650 people, but was insufficient to contain the crowds who turned out that day. Although fewer people attend church regularly these days, St Gabriel's has remained at the heart of the community in Aldersbrook – maybe it has something to do with the lack of a pub! All are guaranteed a warm welcome and the dedication festival this month promises to be every bit as much of a celebration as the original consecration. The church cost around £8,000 to build (approximately £540,000 in today's money) and left the congregation of the day with £1,000 still to find. Some things don't change – the generosity of many people keeps the building as serviceable today as it was 100 years ago.

Then: the original tin hut church

Now: St Gabriel's Church today

In May 1914, the Essex County Chronicle described many features of the new church, including the artistically decorated ceiling and the intricately carved Austrian oak choir stalls, as well as the pulpit and font of stone. The church holds many clues of life in Aldersbrook over the past century. Numerous plaques and shields commemorating war veterans are displayed throughout, and the fixtures added over the years to enhance beauty and worship are too many to mention. The traces of black paint on the windows in the Lady Chapel are not original, but date to the blackout days of WWII. Another highlight is the impressive organ, built by Hill, Norman and Beard, which is put to exquisite use. Whether you wish to explore our rich history, find some peace or celebrate with us, make sure you visit St Gabriel's in 2014. A dedication festival to mark the centenary of St Gabriel's Church will take place on Sunday 18 May at 10.30am. For more information, visit

London for free Spring half-term falls in May and, with the days lengthening, trips into London beckon. Local resident Francesca Fenn explores what there is to see on a budget using just one branch of the DLR

he DLR is without doubt the most fun train line in London. Being driverless, you can sit right at the front, if you don't mind running to get there first! And, because it is a light railway and the trains are short, the track is able to turn at sharp angles, and climb and dip at steep gradients. The major junctions, at Poplar and Canning Town, are particularly impressive. The original DLR line through the Isle of Dogs to Greenwich is well known, but less explored is the line to Woolwich Arsenal, and that's where we're going to take you this month. As well as several stop-offs to explore, travelling on the line gives a fascinating overview of the Docklands area, and its sites of dereliction and regeneration. Take the Central line to Stratford. From there, take the lower level DLR line from platform 17 to Woolwich Arsenal. This line passes through Canning Town, where the different lines that intersect look like a fair ride. The next station is West Silvertown. The Tate and Lyle factory is to the right of the station, and on one corner is probably the largest Golden Syrup tin in the world. Two storeys high, it makes you wonder how many tons of syrup it would hold – and how much mess it would make if it leaked! Alight at Pontoon Dock. It's a great place to while away an hour, with a stunning view of the Thames Barrier. Walk through Thames Barrier Park, which runs from the DLR to the Thames, and includes a fabulous living work of art, Green Dock. This is an old, drained dock filled with immense hedges cut into waves. There is also a refreshment pavilion there. Then it's back to the DLR for just one stop, to London City Airport. There is a viewing area running the length of the runway, and access is free. It is fun to watch planes landing and taking off, apparently on the water, and with over 30 flights an hour, you shouldn't have to wait for long to see some action.

Woolwich Arsenal

Tate and Lyle factory

Back on the train, head to the end of the line at Woolwich Arsenal. The Arsenal was founded in 1761 for the manufacture and storage of weapons and ammunition. Firepower: The Royal Artillery Museum is here, as is the Greenwich Heritage Centre. The buildings are dramatic and of great historic interest. Arsenal Football Club began its life here, too. When it's time to leave, get a river boat into the centre of London, or return to Stratford on the DLR. We hope you've enjoyed your day. Next month, we'll be looking at a few of London's less wellknown free museums – fascinating, charming and a little gory. Francesca is a co-founder of family-oriented guide book series Step Outside Guides, which are available from local bookshops priced £5 each. Visit

ssentially, it was one of those social media moments when you get fed up with people moaning and take the action yourself," explained Hilary Rouse after the first successful meeting. I know what she means, there comes a time when you get fed up with what you're reading online, because people are complaining without finding a solution. Her reaction was to set up the Wanstead Flats Litterchat group on Facebook, to call a meeting that went very well indeed. Hilary continues: "I live near to Wanstead Flats, and with many other people use them for dog walks or a breath of fresh air. It's such a lovely place, but litter has been a significant issue. So many people… were complaining about the litter left all over Wanstead Flats by the weekend footballers. It is bad. The Corporation of London does clear the litter, but they only have a small team and can only clear up on Wednesdays, by which time the litter has been dispersed and the damage is done." #Litterchat (a hashtag she adopted because it sounds good, but which, she tells me, is a discussion about cat litter elsewhere on Twitter) is a very calm group of people talking nicely to those watching weekend matches: "We're not blaming anyone… we're just reminding people. The bottom line is everyone knows they shouldn't, but while watching their kids play football they're thinking about the match and don't realise how much it all adds up." Through #Litterchat on Facebook Hilary arranged to meet anyone interested at The Wanstead Tap last month, and from there they went out and just talked to the people watching football, explaining about the litter and asking that they consider the environment in the future. By going in a peaceful, pleasant

group nobody felt intimidated and the results, Hilary says, were uplifting: "One person came up to me and said 'there are no bins here, I'll take a bin bag with me'." The idea is to repeat this informally in the same way in the future. With a day job in quality improvement for children's day care, Hilary observes: "Today's kids probably understand the impact they make on the world better than us grown-ups. Waltham Forest once had a day that they didn't pick up any litter and it gets in places you wouldn't dream. The first time I was told off about leaving litter it stuck with me, because the person was right. I was on a trip with some kids and dumped an orange on the ground. I thought 'it's organic, it will rot down', but when I was called up on it the person pointed out that it would take ages. That was 30 years ago, but it made me understand how we justify things to ourselves. Now, my partner often comes back from walks having collected stuff to throw away properly." This isn't Hilary's only angelic act, she has been active in the Leytonstone Arts Trail since I first met her seven or eight years ago. She makes little of that too: "I gave up my demanding job some time ago and can only do it [run the Arts Trail] because I'm now working part time. My sister says it's very Big Society. I don't like the term, it's just about people being people – we can help in all sorts of ways".

Divas and decorators The Parish of Wanstead is launching a fundraising appeal to repair St Mary's Church – Redbridge's only Grade I listed building – starting next month with an opera gala event. Penelope Garlick reports

The iconic white building, with its green slate roof, wooden clock tower, open belfry and cupola, stands on Overton Drive, next to the remains of Wanstead House, once belonging to Sir Josiah Child. Together with the surrounding parkland, it is a survivor of the original Georgian landscape at the southern end of Wanstead. Several Grade II listed structures can also be found within the church grounds, from the boundary railings and gates to the monuments to Admiral Robert Plampin and Joseph Wilton RA. St Mary's is considered one of the finest, most unspoilt Georgian churches in the country, with services still held every Sunday morning at 11am. Visitors are also welcome to enjoy its architectural treasures every Saturday morning between 11am and 1pm, or by appointment with the church wardens. Last decorated in 1990, the state of the impressive interior has deteriorated in the intervening years – quite markedly in some places. Regular inspections have highlighted the condition, with the latest report emphasising the need to take action and bring the decor up to the standard expected of a landmark building. The project aims to undertake extensive repairs and redecoration, including vestries and entrance lobbies. The first stage will comprise minor

s the only Grade I listed building in the entire borough of Redbridge, St Mary's is the third church to stand on a site dating back to the year 1200. Designed by the architect Thomas Hardwick and consecrated on 24 June 1790, the interior has remained virtually the same ever since. Original features include the portico main entrance and steps, high box pews and pulpit with sounding board. repairs to plasterwork, jointing and re-setting loose stone-floor paving, as well as the joinery and ironmongery of doors and windows. This will be followed by full preparation and interior redecoration to a historically-authentic scheme. In total, the works are expected to exceed £100,000, which will be entirely self-funded. A number of fundraising events and activities are being planned to cover the costs, starting with Glamour on the Green, to which all are welcome. This event will feature professional singers from the Royal Academy of Music and Trinity Laban Conservatoire performing a varied programme of classic arias in the grounds of St Mary's sister church Christ Church. A licensed bar will serve chilled Pimm's and champagne, with guests also invited to bring picnics to complete an unforgettable summer's evening. Despite being retired, Wanstead and Snaresbrook Rotary Club member David Etherton is a serial clock-watcher, boasting a collection of more than 80 timepieces at his Wanstead home

t all started while travelling in Brittany. I happened to see a huge clock and said to my girlfriend: "Wouldn't that look great on my wall?" She immediately bought it for me and, somehow, we managed to get it into the car and home. I live in a small one bedroom bungalow in Wanstead and that clock takes up one complete wall, but it was her fault that my addiction to clocks began, especially those that chime and have a pendulum – never ring me on the hour as we won't be able to hear each other! The largest of the clocks is one metre in diameter. I bought this one whilst on holiday in a littleknown gem on the coast of Normandy, the name of which I am not divulging for fear it may become invaded by Brits! Wandering around a bric-a-brac shop, suddenly there it was, and I just had to have it. Getting it in the car was decidedly challenging, but where there's a will there's a way and, before I knew it, there it was, in magnificent splendour in the living room. I have several clocks by Lionel – a must-have for all anorak train buffs – imported from America where the name Lionel is very well known for trains and all things associated with trains (the equivalent of our Hornby). On the hour, the train carriages go round the outside of the clock three times, accompanied by – to those of us of a certain age – that all-too familiar 'chuff, chuff chuff' sound (I've checked with the neighbours and, so far, they haven't complained). Many an offer has come my way for this one, but nobody has yet made me one I cannot refuse. I also have a lovely collection of 10 miniature clocks, French clocks, German clocks and clocks of many other nationalities. I buy most of my clocks at boot fairs in England, France and Belgium. I hardly ever pay more that £5 or €5. This, I find, is the enjoyment of collecting clocks – the challenge of finding a bargain.

I also enjoy making my own clocks – using unusual plates are my favourites. Drill a hole in the middle, put the numbers around the outside and bingo, you have a clock. Even a flower pot dish makes an ideal clock for outside. A little bit of imagination and hey presto, another clock. But that's not all. I also have many transfers of clocks stuck on mirrors and even the shower glass. Outside my bungalow there are several more clocks to be found and these need a stepladder to change the time – I certainly don't look forward to doing that twice a year. In the frame

Michele Redgrave of High Street art gallery Images in Frames takes a look at the work of Kerry Darlington, who is currently one of the biggest-selling artists in the United Kingdom

ur Walthamstow branch of Images in Frames was one of the first London galleries to exhibit the art of Kerry Darlington, and we are delighted to welcome her creative works to the Wanstead gallery as well. Kerry, who started out just over eight years ago, arguably made her creative name courtesy of her unique Tree of Life collection, which sees trees bearing all manner of obvious and not-soobvious flora, fauna and other objects, including butterflies, owls, lollipops and gemstones alongside the more familiar leaves. Recently, she has delved into the realms of childhood fantasy figures and environs, such as Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, The Wizard of Oz and mythological creatures such as Pandora and Undine. "I am at my happiest when painting the female form. My figurative painting is a combination of pattern, nature, the colour of energy and an ephemeral, nostalgic subject matter. I cannot offer a more detailed explanation for these paintings, they have a title and they have a feeling – the feeling I put into the painting then, on completion, the feeling that the painting transfers to the viewer – is its' best explanation," says Kerry. Kerry's love of art originally stemmed from wellthumbed titles that were found in her family's bookcase as a child and inspired a young girl to explore the world of art. She is an innovative artist who has been influenced by art and design of the late-19th and early-20th century, while using modern materials to create her unique style for which Kerry has become so well known. Peter Pan has been revisited with a new project from the lesser-known book Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. In this story, JM Barrie first introduces little Peter, who has flown away from his mother to live with the fairies and birds in Kensington Gardens. Although not many know about this story, everyone identifies with the boy who would never grow up.

Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens by Kerry Darlington

Her recent Tree of Life collection is a sophisticated theme, which explores the idea of precious metals. The Tree of Life – Gold design is inspired by Gustav Klimt, with the trunk and branches embellished with gold leaf and metallics. Our Wanstead gallery is showcasing Kerry's spring collection, which continues to evolve ideas that have run through previous work. The three-dimensional layering has become integral to much of her printed editions – Kerry has created the raised elements to work as a separate dimension, to confuse the eye and create a flow through each piece. In her abstracts, layering has been used to create cracks and ravines in the 'volcanic structure' of the work. Images in Frames is located at 71 High Street, Wanstead, E11 2AE. Military wives choir

Ahead of a local performance by the Colchester Military Wives Choir, Yvonne O’Sullivan, president of the Wanstead and Snaresbrook Rotary Club, takes a look at how music has been bringing people together

n February 2011, television choirmaster Gareth Malone arrived at the military base at Chivenor in north Devon. His purpose was to create a choir from the hundreds of women living on the base. This simple beginning changed his life, the lives of all who joined the choir and, since then, of many, many more military wives across the country. His belief that singing can change the toughest of lives and that music can bring people together under extraordinary circumstances not only proved to be true, but led to an artistic, almost spiritual journey. The wives of Chivenor, soon to be joined by those from Plymouth, went from obscurity to the hearts of the nation. They had come a very long way, and were very different people from the 41 women who turned up at the first rehearsal just before their husbands deployed to Afghanistan. Singing brought them together with a sense of purpose, of achievement and of enjoyment too. Their confidence and self image visibly grew from week to week. Both at Chivenor and all over the country, nothing was known about the wives of servicemen. They were largely ignored – it was as if they didn't exist. Their first public performance before 600 people (they expected 50) at Barnstable Market was a huge step. None of them had done anything like this before, but it was a success and with the applause and recognition came confidence and a sense of camaraderie. They were now all "sisters together". The sense of support, recognition, care and appreciation shown by the people of Barnstable started to spread across the country through the power of television. This special sense of togetherness gave strength to the wives of Plymouth in particular, when several men from that base were killed in Afghanistan. In a bold leap of faith, the choir was asked to perform before the Queen at the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall. A new

song, Wherever You Are, was written by Paul Mealor. He used words from letters between the wives and their husbands as the basis for the song. The emotionally charged, beautiful performance by the choir left many in tears. This song became a Christmas number one single, with huge media attention. There followed a Classic Brit Award and a performance with Gary Barlow and Andrew Lloyd Webber outside Buckingham Palace for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. There are now many military wives' choirs up and down the country. Our local choir is at Colchester. Like the original Chivenor Choir, they have found great friendships, a great support network and great happiness through singing. The Colchester Military Wives Choir will be performing at the Chingford Assembly Hall this month. Why not come and listen to them? It will be a moving and special occasion and two important charities will benefit from the event. The Colchester Military Wives Choir will be performing on 31 May from 7.30pm at Chingford Assembly Hall, Station Road, E4 7EN. Tickets are £20, with all proceeds going to the Soldiers', Sailors' and Airmen's Family Association and Action for Kids. For more information or to book a ticket, call 020 8534 5188 or 020 8559 8155

Wanstead Park 1784–1812 The ovvners of

In the 17th of a series of monthly articles looking at the owners of Wanstead Park through history, Friends of Wanstead Parklands member Richard Arnopp tells how one absentee owner was succeeded by another who then went on to rebuild the parish church

n September 1784 the reign of the Child family at Wanstead came to an end when John, 2nd Earl Tylney of Castlemaine, died in Italy, where he had lived for over 20 years. The heir to Lord Tylney's extensive estates, which also included Tylney Hall and Rochford, was his nephew James Long. Born around 1737, James was the eldest son of Sir Robert Long, 6th Baronet, and his wife Emma Child, Lord Tylney's sister. He enjoyed a good relationship with Lord Tylney – they carried on a friendly correspondence and James visited him in Italy. James Long succeeded his father as 7th Baronet in 1767, and inherited the Long family estates, including the manors of Draycot and Athelhampton. When he united his uncle's properties to his paternal inheritance, he took the additional name of Tylney. Married twice, Sir James Tylney-Long had three daughters and a son by his second wife Lady Catherine Sydney Windsor, daughter of the 4th Earl of Plymouth. An unassuming and modest man, he is not recorded as ever having spoken in 32 years as a Member of Parliament. He successively represented Marlborough (1762 to 1780), Devizes (1780 to 1788) and Wiltshire in 1788, replacing the late Charles Penruddocke. Sir James was a generous benefactor to charity, and in Wanstead will always be remembered for the rebuilding of the parish church.

There has been a parish church in Wanstead since at least the early 13th century. However, the mediaeval building was small and inconvenient, and piecemeal attempts to enlarge it had not proved successful either in practical or aesthetic terms. During the incumbency of Dr. Samuel Glasse as Rector, the decision was taken in 1786 to rebuild the church on a new site some 70 feet north of its predecessor, on land donated for the purpose by Sir James Tylney-Long so that burials in the mediaeval church would not need to be disturbed. As well as catering for an expanding population, the new building complemented Wanstead House in both its classical design and materials. It also formed a magnificent eye-catcher in its own right at the end of one of the avenues on the estate, which still survives to some degree as St Mary's Avenue. The new church was built to designs by the architect Thomas Hardwick and was completed in 1790. Sir James defrayed a large part of the cost of the fabric and furnishings also. It is now listed Grade I, the only building in the London Borough of Redbridge to be so designated. It is an austere rectangular building, constructed in Portland stone, with a nave, aisles, and a projecting chancel. It has a hipped slate roof, with a wooden clock tower with open belfry and cupola. It retains much of its original interior fittings, including box pews (subject to some limited rearrangement), the pulpit, the organ and galleries. Despite his splendid benefactions to the parish, Sir James Tylney-Long seems to have had little affection for Wanstead, and rarely visited it. No significant improvements to the house seem to have been made during his time and it mostly stood empty, but for a skeleton staff of servants. Although the house was little used, the estate underwent some important changes. In 1786, the Manor of Aldersbrook was purchased from the heirs of Smart Lethieullier and became tenanted farmland. The adjacent areas of Wanstead Park, south of the Serpentine Lakes, were also given over to agriculture. A screen of trees were planted behind the lakes, which came to define the boundary of the pleasure grounds, and later the public park,

to this day. Similar changes took place to the north and east. The eastern area of the park, around the Ornamental Water, was probably planted as woodland during these years, as it has remained since. After the death (aged 57) of Sir James TylneyLong on 28 November 1794, the Gentleman's Magazine wrote: "Formed, by nature and by habit, for an honourable and useful retirement, he felt very little relish for the gay and splendid scenes of what is called high life‌ His great accession of fortune a few years before his death‌ certainly made no addition to his happiness. Accustomed from principle and from virtuous habits to live within the bounds of his paternal income, he would have been well content to have preserved to the end that character of uprightness and respectability, as a private country gentleman, which he had maintained in his native county." Sir James' son, also James, was born two months before his father's death and became the 8th Baronet. A sickly child, he was to die in 1805, just before his 11th birthday. His tenure was marked by one major change. This was the demolition of the Orangery in 1799, which we can date because its contents and materials were itemised in a site catalogue. This fine building is believed to have been constructed under Richard Child in the early 18th century and has been attributed on stylistic grounds to William Talman. Defoe, in 1724, described the building as being "an excellent Building fit to entertain a Prince; 'tis furnish'd with Stoves and artificial Places for Heat from an Apartment, in which is a Bagnio, and other Conveniences, which render it both useful and pleasant". The depictions of the Orangery show that it was an elaborate and ornamental building, with gables, steps up to it, statues on top and an impressive ornamental glass frontage. The surviving orangeries at Kensington Palace and Kew give some impression of its scale. Next month, we shall see life return to Wanstead House, as a member of the French Royal Family chooses it as his place of exile during the Revolution. The Friends of Wanstead Parklands is a community group which campaigns for the preservation and improvement of Wanstead Park. Visit

Duelling & dancing Pistols were drawn and stately dancers filled the Temple garden for a Jane Austen-themed tea party in Wanstead Park last month. Organiser Gill James tells of an afternoon of cravats, corsets and cake

© Stuart Monro

t is very easy to imagine the ill-starred heiress of Wanstead Park, Catherine TylneyLong, sitting prettily in the rather extensive garden of her summer house, reading a novel on a summer's afternoon – perhaps Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. A likely choice, as this was one of the must-have reads of the day, and a copy was indeed on record in the sale catalogue of the auction of goods at Wanstead House a few years later. It is not a truth universally acknowledged that Jane Austen was actually related to Catherine. They were fourth cousins, but probably did not know it. So holding a tea party in their memory at the Temple in Wanstead Park was a very attractive idea. The Temple is a late-Georgian building, so the setting was perfect. Once the esteemed guests had arrived, the men resplendent in cravats and top hats and the ladies gracious in their Regency bonnets and dresses, tea was served. There were at least 11 kinds of cake and, of course, gallons of that valued Georgian commodity, tea. It looked good and it tasted better, thanks to local vintage tea maker John O'Grady of Consume. In the background, we heard the lovely sounds of music from the Almeria Trio, who have played for numerous Jane Austen events and films. Various ladies present enacted a genteel little tea scenario, explaining the tea rituals of the time. We also heard readings from Pride and Prejudice. A newsboy kept interrupting proceedings by running in and out, shouting the news of the period – shocking events such as the French Revolution were announced, none of which impinged on the very private world of Jane Austen's novels. Then, surprise! There was a disagreement between gentlemen over cards. A challenge was issued, a glove thrown down and seconds found. The place for the duel was chosen – outside, in the Temple garden. The weapons were selected, shots were fired and one of our

gallant gentlemen fell to the ground, wounded. Fortunately, the guns were plastic and the bullet was a firecracker, so no laws were broken and the victim survived to play cards (and drink whiskey) another day. Finally, the Almeria Trio broke into the strains of a well-known tune of the period and everyone joined in a stately dance. With the white pillars of the Temple portico behind, the bluebells of Chalet Wood glimpsed through the trees to the right and Chestnut Avenue stretching out in front, the dance was indeed a fine sight to behold. The Friends of Wanstead Parklands arranged the tea party and we hope to see many more such splendid events in Wanstead Park. The Friends of Wanstead Parklands is a community group which campaigns for the preservation and improvement of Wanstead Park. For more information on the history of the area, visit
