Welcome... How often do you read the full credits of a film? How much praise for the success of a TV show do you attribute to the 'unknown' supporting cast members and the technical teams? We all know the number of people involved in such productions can be huge, yet we are perhaps all guilty of idolising the stars at the expense of everyone else involved. It's a testament to our celebrity culture that we like to identify with a single entity above all others and this desire to appoint a figurehead applies to many aspects of our lives. The world really is like a stage and we are all merely players, a few will have leading roles, but most will be extras or runners. To push the analogy a step further, we can also liken not just ourselves as players on the world stage, but also everything else around us. And the stage need not be a global one. What of the stage that is Wanstead? Who are the leading characters in the telling of Wanstead's story? Who are the supporting artists, the prop-makers and the grips? If the bluebells are the annual stars of Wanstead Park, then lest we forget the abundance of supporting roles played by an ensemble of wildflowers (see pages 8 and 20). If football is the celebrity of Wanstead Flats, then lest we forget the less sporty ways a community of extras can take to the field (see pages 7 and 26). If a grandfather is top of the bill in a family business, then lest we forget those making a name for themselves further down the family tree (see pages 14-15). From infancy to mere oblivion, man may act out Shakespeare's seven ages in the plays that are our lives, but in the play that is Wanstead, the acts are still being defined. And, as in any community, we all have a part to play in those definitions. Whether you cast yourself in a headline role, find yourself muttering rhubarb in the background or work entirely behind the lens, everything we do contributes to life's ongoing script. From the headline-grabbing bluebell to the uncredited vetchlings hiding in the grasses, Wanstead wouldn't be the same without either. Let the show go on. Lee Marquis, Editor

Don't worry if you think you can't sing, Upbeat is a warm and welcoming environment where you'll have a chance to learn the ropes. No audition is required, and you don't need to read music. John Cryer's safe seat

New mayor elected

John Cryer was reelected as the Member of Parliament for Leyton and Wanstead at last month's General Election, increasing his majority from the 2010 election. He received 23,858 votes (58.6%), with Conservative Matthew Scott coming second with 8,939 votes (22%). The Green Party's Ashley Gunstock was third with 2,974 votes (7.3%) – an increase of over 2,000 votes since 2010 – pushing the Liberal Democrats into fourth. The seat has been held by Labour since its creation in 1997 and represents one of the party's safest seats.

The new Mayor of Redbridge, Councillor Barbara White, was elected at Redbridge Council's annual Mayor Making ceremony last month. Councillor White, who has served as a councillor since May 2010, was born in Forest Gate and has lived in Redbridge for 40 years. Speaking about her chosen charities for the coming year, she said: "I always wanted to speak up for those less able to speak for themselves and have therefore chosen seven local charities to support during my mayoral year."

Residents are invited to join a community picnic on Wanstead Flats this month as part of the Big Lunch initiative, which aims to encourage people across the UK to have lunch with their neighbours annually on the first Sunday in June. "Our idea for doing it came from

a picnic that we had last summer as part of our centenary celebrations," said Fr Martyn Hawkes of St Gabriel's Church, who has organised the event. The picnic will begin at 12 noon on 7 June, opposite the church on Aldersbrook Road. Call 020 8989 0315

Construction begins on a new headquarters for local Scouts

Highams Players need more actors so the shows can go on

How the new hall will look

The Highams Players performed The Weekend by Michael Palin in March

Construction began last month on a new Rovsco Hall – the headquarters of the Epping Forest South Scout District – on the corner of Wanstead High Street and Hollybush Hill. The previous hall was a prefabricated building erected in 1977 and, after nearly 38 years

of use, was becoming expensive to maintain. In addition to the Scouts, the new hall – which is scheduled to be completed by 31 August – will continue to be used by a number of other local groups, including the Aldersbrook Dog School and the Epping Forest Outdoor Group.

The perfect role model

A key area for investment

A Wanstead High School student has been nominated in the London Young People of the Year awards, which showcases those who give to others. Sara Taha Hajj Ahmad was nominated for her charity work and for being a 'true inspiration and perfect role model'. As a young teenager, Sara witnessed the horrors of war in her native Syria, before fleeing with her family. Sara, who hopes to become a doctor, mentors younger pupils, is a member of the School Council and works in a local charity shop.

Redbridge has been identified as a 'Priority Development Area' by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), meaning the organisation will work with the Council and local groups to ensure they take advantage of the lottery grants available to them. "HLF would like the communities of Redbridge to experience the rewards of an HLF project and I would urge those with heritage project ideas to contact me to explore opportunities for funding," said HLF Development Officer Richard McClenaghan. Visit hlf.org.uk

Local amateur dramatics society the Highams Players have cancelled this month's planned show due to a lack of members and casting difficulties. The group was founded in the 1940s, performing at Highams House before moving to Wanstead House in 1973. "We usually

put on three plays a year, in November, March and June," said group secretary Susan Walters. "So please, if you are interested in acting, even if you've never done it before, do get in touch." The next play is scheduled to open on 19 November. Call 020 8924 6987

Palaces of art: WI discover 19th century artists' houses

The former home of the painter Frederic, Lord Leighton

An expert from the Courtauld Institute of Art will be looking at the homes of 19th century London artists and designers at this month's meeting of the Wanstead Women's Institute. Francesca Herrick will be talking about artists such as Frederic, Lord Leighton and

William Morris, who turned away from mainstream style to create their own personal 'palaces of art'. The presentation will take place on the evening of 18 June at Christ Church hall. Prospective members wishing to attend must book in advance. Visit wavidi.com/wifh

Hundreds of visitors travelled to Aldersbrook last month to take part in the area's first jumble trail, which saw 74 residents set up stalls outside their homes. Items for sale included vintage clothing, records, furniture, toys and home-made cakes and samosas.

"Everyone agreed it was a fantastic day and we are hoping to make this community event even bigger and better next year," said organiser Lou Clouter, who has produced a short film of the event to be screened at the end of the summer. Visit wavidi.com/ajt

Following the success of Shelf Life E11:E4:E18, in which Mike Edwards documented venerable local people's lives, he is now looking into the histories of those who have more recently arrived in the area or started businesses here. In the fourth of a series of articles, Jenni Rosenberg of Stitch tells her story

I

really didn't want to get up at four in the morning to stand on a cold, windy market stall selling fabrics, but my dad insisted. So, there I was, just out of university, learning to cut fabric in Kingston Market. Then one wet morning, I remember meeting a particularly stylish woman and I was transfixed by her glamorous, well-cut clothes, dressed from head to toe in M Rosenberg & Son fabrics. She told me that she started dressmaking because she couldn't afford to buy clothes for herself and her family, and had been coming to buy fabrics from our family stall for over 30 years. My dad welcomed her with open arms and they chatted for ages. I saw the relationship Dad had with his customers and the passion he had for the fabrics he sold. I felt so proud and understood what a family business meant. My grandad, Maurice Rosenberg, was a Polish war hero, and Nana Freda was a Czechoslovakian survivor of the Holocaust. Over 60 years ago, they started selling fabrics together in the East End markets, and with hard work and passion the business began to flourish. Dad was brought up in the markets and, with the love of good fabrics in his blood, M Rosenberg & Son was created. Mum and Dad moved to Wanstead soon after they married. We had a warehouse that was behind Wanstead High Street, and I remember my brother and I running around, playing with scraps of fabrics and swordfighting with the cardboard poles from the centre of fabric rolls, but growing up I never understood what people used to do with the fabrics, as dressmaking didn't run in the family. The business didn't interest me when I was young, but meeting that lady in the market, together with a growing sense of style and fashion, inspired me to get involved. Getting up at 4am was no longer a struggle and as

time went by, the beautiful pieces of cloth became my passion and Dad welcomed me into the business. We had always loved the iconic Edwardian building that had housed Andrews Builders Merchants (which featured in Mike's book) and three years ago, we had the opportunity to move in and preserve a little bit of Wanstead. Stitch Fabrics of Wanstead has become my second home, and I learnt the trade by watching what my Dad did in the markets. He taught me everything I know about fabrics and how to be with customers, just like his dad had taught him. I am proud to be the third generation of the family business and so pleased that Grandad witnessed the opening, at the grand age of 99, to see the business carrying on. My mum is also involved in our fabric world, going to our Travelling Fabric Shows with Dad and helping

me in the shop, if necessary. People from all walks of life come in to shop, including people who have been to the shows as far afield as Birmingham and Glasgow, and who then enjoy our High Street before returning home. We have dressmaking and craft workshops on site with expert tutors, an ever expanding website and a new warehouse in South Woodford, which will be a showroom in the near future. Stitch has been described as an Aladdin's cave of every fabric imaginable and I am proud to be a colourful part of our vibrant High Street. After the bluebells In the fourth of a series of articles exploring local biodiversity, Tim Harris of the Wren Wildlife and Conservation Group takes a look at the local flora we can still enjoy after the bluebells have receded

W

anstead Park is justifiably famed for its bluebells in spring. The blue haze that sits on the floor of Chalet Wood in April is a wonderful sight and draws visitors from miles around. What of the rest of Wanstead's flora, though? It would probably surprise many readers to know that local botanists have recorded more than 780 species of flowering plants (including ferns). When you look at the mix of habitats, it is easier to understand why. There is deeply shaded woodland and sun-dappled glades in parts of Wanstead Park and at Gilbert's Slade, near Forest School. There is plenty of fresh water to encourage emergent vegetation, for example along the banks of the River Roding and around the lakes in Wanstead Park. There are areas of damp grassland near Jubilee Pond and at the old sewage works site at the end of Empress Avenue. And there are swathes of acid or semi-acid grassland on Wanstead Flats and on The Plain. None of these environments is truly natural but some of the most recently disturbed are some of the most interesting, floristically. The area in the middle of the Green Man roundabout, at the north end of Leytonstone High Road, is one such example. It is hard to think of a more urban location, yet it boasts a plethora of wildflowers. So where are the best places to look for those splashes of blue, yellow, pink, mauve and white once the bluebells have lost their vibrancy? There are lots of options, including the gently sloping meadow at the west end of the old brickfield on Wanstead Flats, the lovely bank at the east end of Perch Pond or the area around Shoulder of Mutton Pond. For me, though, one little spot stands out. Beyond the riding stables at the end of Empress Avenue, follow the cycle track to the east and you will come to an area of rough grassland, hawthorn bushes and brambles. Until the 1970s, this was the location of a sewage works and is now a botanist's delight. More than 250 plant species have been recorded here, some much more obvious than others. Just beyond the stables, in the damp, shaded area to the north of the track, there are some large clumps

Green alkanet

Grass vetchling

Biting stonecrop

of the confusingly named green alkanet, which flowers from April to July. Confusing, because the flowers are bright blue, with a white eye in the middle. Many gardeners throw up their hands in despair when this plant appears because it spreads quickly and is difficult to get rid of. However, it cannot be denied that its flowers are very attractive. It was first imported to Britain in the Middle Ages and cultivated by monks for its roots, which produce a rich red dye. Nearby, in the open area named Redbridge Field by local naturalist Paul Ferris, is a plant that most of the time looks indistinguishable from the grasses surrounding it. Then, in June, splashes of colour – bright crimson red flowers at the end of long stalks – appear and the beautiful grass vetchling is suddenly hard to miss. From June to the end of August, dramatic spikelets of great mullein also tower over the grasses at the northern end of the field. This member of the figwort family grows up to two metres tall and sports masses of bright yellow flowers at the top of its unbranched stem. I'll finish with one of my favourites, biting stonecrop, which forms mats of fleshy, peppertasting leaves with small yellow flowers. It grows on the very poor soil on slabs of concrete – I believe these formed part of the sewage works compound when it was operational – demonstrating that nature can take advantage of even the harshest environments. As we celebrate 125 years of football on Wanstead Flats – the venue where John Terry, Jermain Defoe and Sol Campbell began their careers – James Thatcher reports on local and national sporting history

E

pping Forest can claim to be the founders of modern sport and the original home of one of the most successful sides in the history of the FA Cup, winning the competition on no fewer than five times in nine years. Charles William Alcock, an Epping Forest resident who became known as the 'father of modern sport', was credited with founding the FA Cup, as well as creating international football and cricket. Forest FC were an amateur club founded in 1859. For the first two years of the club's existence, the players organised matches among themselves at Leyton in Epping Forest, on land owned by the Earl of Mornington. Forest's first match against another club took place on 15 March 1862 and resulted in a victory over Crystal Palace (not the modern club of the same name). Forest FC played at Snaresbrook, reputedly close to one of two orphanages in the area; the Infant Orphan Asylum or the Merchant Seaman's Orphan Asylum in nearby Wanstead. In 1863, they were one of the founder members of the Football Association. The club was initially formed by a number of former public school pupils, including Alcock. The other founders were Alcock's brother, John F. Alcock, J. Pardoe and brothers A. and W. J. Thompson – all Epping Forest residents. However, in 1864, the club was renamed as The Wanderers. Because of the expense the club was incurring by having its own home ground, it is reported that Alcock decided to turn it into a wandering team with no fixed home venue. The team that won the first FA Cup in 1872 was essentially the Forest FC side, with no less than eight Epping Forest residents. The team was hugely successful. Its driving force was Alcock, who was Forest FC's centre forward and an amazing man. Born in 1842 in Sunderland, he moved to Chingford at an early age and became the chairman of the FA in 1870. It was Alcock who proposed to the FA

A photo of the Forest FC team, taken in 1863

'that it would be desirable that a Challenge Cup should be established in connection with the Association, for which all clubs should be invited to compete'. Thus the FA Cup – the world's first national football tournament – was created in Epping Forest and furthermore, it could also be argued that Epping Forest also invented international football when Alcock suggested to his FA colleagues that, in order to promote the game, England should send a team to play against a Scottish select eleven. He himself played in one international game, captaining England against Scotland on 6 March 1875. England won, and of course, Alcock scored. A man of many parts, most of them connected with football, Alcock also refereed the 1875 and 1879 Cup finals and as a journalist, was responsible in 1868 for creating the first football annual. To illustrate the breadth of Alcock's interests, he was also secretary of Surrey Cricket Club, and it was he who conceived the inaugural Test match to be held in England against Australia in 1880. He also suggested that this become a biennial fixture, to be played in England one year and Australia the next – at which point England lost, bails were burnt and The Ashes was born. Stay on your bike PCSO Alan Winston of the Wanstead and Snaresbrook Neighbourhood Policing Team highlights the measures you should take to keep your bike secure, both at home and out in public

P

ush bikes are a common target for thieves, whether it is from your garden shed, a communal area in a block of flats or out in the streets. They can be sold as scrap or stripped down for parts, but either way, you are left walking. All bikes have a frame number, which can normally be found on the underside of the frame where the pedals go through the bike. Make a note of this number and register your bike (immobilise.com). Use stickers so that criminals are aware your bike is registered. You can also get your bike marked or stamped. At home, keep your bike out of public view, and make sure your shed is secure. Lock or chain your bikes together to make them harder to pick up or wheel away. If possible, consider installing a floor or wall-mounted anchor. When out and about, avoid poorly lit areas, look for bike stands that are immovable, rather than a railing or lamp post, and try not to use the same location on a regular basis. Take all your belongings with you. Always lock your bike through the frame and never leave it alone and unlocked, even for a couple of minutes. There is no point in spending hundreds of pounds on a bike without buying a good lock, so ensure you opt for well-tested locks (check out soldsecure.com). Motorbikes are very good at holding their value and are targeted because of this. Ground anchors are a must at home, and if you can store them out of sight, then do so. Adding security markings to multiple parts of your bike will also make it less attractive and therefore less likely to be stolen. Remember to write down the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Stolen parts of bikes are often sold to members of the public, either face-to-face or over the internet. If you are offered a bargain, then you could be buying stolen goods. You could be arrested, or at the very least, the item will be

seized. Stick to reputable dealers and always get a receipt. Look at the seller's history when you buy online. When selling your bike or car, thieves can pose as buyers. Never let the buyer test drive your vehicle alone as they may not come back. Be careful about accepting cheques or bankers drafts. If they are fraudulent, you will lose your money. When you buy a used vehicle, always take a friend. Ask to see the original documentation (V5) and make sure it looks genuine. Look at the VIN numbers – do they all match? Or have efforts been made to remove them? Look for damage to locks and security devices on the vehicle. The DVLA will be able to check if the vehicle description matches what you are looking at and the AA (0870 600 0371) or RAC (0870 533 3660) can both conduct vehicle history checks to make sure it's not stolen and check for outstanding finance. At the end of the day, you should trust your instincts and if it feels wrong, walk away. The Wanstead and Snaresbrook Neighbourhood Policing Team run a contact point at Wanstead House every Wednesday and Thursday between 7pm and 8pm, and on Saturdays between 2pm and 3pm. Pb h io ot o graphy g r a p h y In the third of a series of articles by members of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, David Tachauer talks about his family-inspired switch to digital photography

M

© David Tachauer

y name is David Tachauer but my friends call me 'Cabby Dave'. I live with my lovely wife Mimi in the Redbridge area and have three married children and an amazing nine grandchildren. Photography has always interested me, but when the advent of digital cameras coincided with the birth of my first grandchildren in March 2006, my interest soon became a passion. My old Minolta Dynax film camera was quickly replaced by a succession of Canon DSLRs and I found the conversion to digital freed me to experiment with different styles, without wasting expensive film on the inevitable duds. I love to travel, especially around Europe, but also fly to the USA once or twice a year, as well as taking trips to my second home in Israel. I can't say that I have either a special talent in photography or that I prefer a particular genre, but I do certainly strive to make each project as good as I can – often driving my family to distraction as I ask them to wait for that special light or I wander off looking for that extra special point of view or composition. I joined Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society a couple of years ago and have found the twice-monthly meetings both fun and informative. I do believe that membership has advanced my photography considerably. Socially too, the club suits me and I regularly organise outings. As a London cabby, I am able to show my colleagues parts of our great city that are not so well known. Photographic editing is also a passion and I often spend hours fine tuning my pictures until finally printing the occasional one that I find especially pleasing. A somewhat rare occurrence, I confess. I am also a member of The Royal Photographic Society and my ambition is to achieve their Licentiate status in the near future. How cool would it be to be known as Cabby Dave LRPS?

This month, Chris Sherret from Aldersbrook Riding School will be talking to the Wanstead Park Women's Club about the Riding for the Disabled Association and making a plea for volunteers to help

W

inston Churchill once said: "There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man." Back in 1973, Ida Thorne, strongly believing this, founded Aldersbrook stables to bring ponies and children together for their mutual benefit. Ida has always cared passionately about animal wellbeing and even today, horses at Aldersbrook Riding School have a home for life, being cared for long after they have retired.

Aldersbrook Riding School's long-term resident Ria

Two of our oldest residents, Czarina and Ria, have both been at Aldersbrook since the late 1980s, and now retired, they can be seen spending their days lazing about in the sun and eating hay. As well as being home to the horses, the school is also home to the Aldersbrook and Wanstead Group of the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA). A registered charity itself, the group is a member of the national RDA charity, and their objectives are to provide disabled people in the area with the opportunity to ride in order to benefit their health and wellbeing. The group is responsible for a number of special school groups, who regularly use the riding school. However, neither the riding school nor the charitable group would be able to operate successfully without the help of the volunteers who support them. Children over 10 years old who ride at the school come along on weekends and during school holidays to help by leading the ponies for other riders. But this is not just a job for children, as our many disabled groups come during term time when we rely on other volunteers who have an hour or two to spare.

Community chorus Budding performers in Wanstead and across the borough have the opportunity to join a community chorus this summer and be a part of a series of outdoor performances. Sam Goodey reports

T

Š Doug Southall

his summer, Vision RCL presents an outdoor theatre festival after securing funding from Arts Council England and the London Borough of Redbridge. The programme, presented by the Culture Team, consists of four very different productions, with a total of 16 performances. There will be five free performances for families, six subsidised shows for Redbridge schools and an opportunity for budding performers to take part in a community chorus. The performances will take place at Ken Aston Square on Barkingside High Street, Fairlop Fair at Fairlop Waters and in the beautiful gardens of Valentines Mansion throughout June and July. Passionate about sharing their expertise and getting people involved in their exciting productions, theatre company Teatro Vivo are inviting budding performers to join their Fairytale Finders community chorus. Fairy-tale Finders is an outdoor family theatre performance. We want to take you on an adventure to the unknown, where you may seek out a desperate Prince Charming, a very hungry wolf or a rather wet frog prince. Beware of Snow White's wicked stepmother (she can be very demanding) and be sure to stop by for a dance with the Musicians of Bremen. This show is a fun-filled adventure for fairy-tale loving families, with the chance to meet some of these famous characters, telling their version of the stories that we all know and love in some unusual places and inventive spaces. Being part of the Fairy-tale Finders community chorus involves participating in a number of free performance workshops that will explore the development of character and the exploration of poetry, prose and songs from the production. From these workshops, Teatro Vivo will create a bespoke way for you to be involved in the final production. This may involve playing a certain character, performing songs and poetry, as well as leading audiences.

Teatro Vivo are looking for keen, enthusiastic people from all walks of life who enjoy being part of a team and are looking to do something a little different. If you're interested in performing and keen to develop your singing and acting skills, or can play an instrument, then do get involved. "Quite simply the best theatre experience I have ever had. I cannot overstate how moved I was by everyone and everything. Absolute pure genius on everyone's part." (Teatro Vivo audience member). For more information on the outdoor theatre shows, visit redbridge.gov.uk/theatre. To take part in the Fairy-tale Finders community chorus, email info@teatrovivo.co.uk

Painted forest

This month, the Essex Art Club will be hosting an exhibition of work inspired by the flora and fauna of Epping Forest and Wanstead Park. Chairman of the club Ron Clark offers a preview

For centuries, Epping Forest and Wanstead Park have attracted artists, poets and musicians. As a child, William Morris lived close by, first at Warren Hall, then at the Waterhouse in Walthamstow, which is now the William Morris Gallery. The forest was somewhere he would later describe as: "always interesting and always beautiful," and it became a lasting inspiration for his popular fabric and wallpaper designs with flora and fauna subjects, the theme of this exhibition. Our display includes paintings, watercolours and prints of oaks and beech trees, deer, foliage, flowers and berries. Not least, there are swathes of bluebells to delight the eye and lift the spirits. Two of our club's most renowned past presidents, Frank Brangwyn and Walter Spradbery, had links to William Morris. Brangwyn had been partly trained under Morris, and he and Spradbery were largely instrumental in the founding of the gallery and collection in his memory. Spradbery himself was also closely associated with the Forest, where he not only had a cottage home, but also drew and painted the most wonderful posters for London Transport, to encourage visitors from the City and East End to share in its delights. Some of these delights await you at the Temple this month. Essex in the Forest – Flora and Fauna is on show at Wanstead Park's Temple from 6 to 28 June (weekends, 12 noon to 5pm, ). he history of Essex Art Club goes back to the turn of the 19th century, just a few years after Queen Victoria had visited Epping Forest in 1882, when she declared: "It gives me the greatest satisfaction to dedicate this beautiful forest to the use and enjoyment of my people for all time," after which it became known as The People's Forest.

Nearly playtime The crowdfunding appeal is over, so what's next for the Wanstead Playground Association? Sarah Boud looks ahead to grants, a gala dinner and some volunteering graft

W

The Manor hosted a half term disco for us, organised by Hartbeeps East London and West Essex. Wanstead is home to several 'mumtrepreneurs' who combine motherhood with running small businesses, and many organised (or are organising) events for us. Thanks goes to Loopy Loo Parties, Cinnamon Cakes, Jinglebop and Maxine Finch. The Creation Station will also be hosting a Father's Day cardmaking workshop for us on 17 June at the Cherry Tree Café from 1.30pm (call 020 8263 0023). Our big fund-raising event, however, is on 20 June: a black tie gala dinner at Wanstead Golf Club. With a champagne reception, three-course meal, live music from the Eleonora Damizia Jazz band, a raffle and an auction, it promises to be an excellent night out. We've been overwhelmed by the support from local High Street shops and businesses, who have donated prizes, sponsored tables or taken out advertising in the gala programme. We're all looking forward to donning our glad rags and having a great night out. Waitrose chose our appeal as one of their three green token charities in April, donating £330. We also had good news from the Wanstead and Snaresbrook Rotary Club and the Wanstead Women's Institute, both of whom have decided to feature us as one of their chosen charities. Not all playground improvements require hard cash. The playground has been offered the support of Amey, Redbridge's waste contractors, who – as part of their employee volunteering scheme – will be sending us a team of employees to help paint fences and generally spruce up the

area. They'll be joined by other volunteers from the local area and, of course, ourselves. Starbucks have offered to provide coffee in the morning, and Luppolo have promised to lay on an amazing spread for lunch. We'll post the date on Facebook and Twitter, so be sure to follow us. With the crowdfund over and events (nearly) over, we're now entering phase three of our appeal. We've already been successful in applying for some smaller grants, including Ford Britain Trust, the Lynn Foundation, Leathersellers Company Trust and Redbridge Small Grants. The crowdfund money has allowed us to apply to these trusts and foundations, and going forward, this is where the bulk of our funding will come from and will have a huge impact on what our playground will eventually look like. It's been an amazing six months – here's to the next! "I

don't feel much like an angel," said Diana as we met at Leytonstone's All You Read Is Love for a coffee and chat. This from a woman who has successfully brought up two girls, moved to Wanstead in 1987, was a picture editor and trade magazine editor, press officer and campaigner, who is still integral to the Seeds for Snaresbrook project, who has participated in Transition Leytonstone, is co-coordinator of the Wanstead and Woodford Friends of the Earth, runs a regular stall at the Wanstead farmers' market, sacrificed birthday celebrations when she stood for the local Green Party in a very Tory constituency, gaining more votes than the national average, created a calendar of climate change, vital for unlocking the doors to widespread environmental networking that is much needed and for which she is looking for a publisher, and supports a campaign to help schools save money through solar power. Angel or not, there's no doubt she has done huge good for the community. She shares the coordinator position with Ann Williams (read next month's Wanstead Village Directory to find out more about her), having, she says, become a 'serious serial activist' in 2009, when she offered to assist in Transition Leytonstone (a community initiative that aims to make Leytonstone the best and most sustainable place to be). The group is still a force today and she's still part of it. One of those people who lives just the other side of the borough borders, Diana started attending the Wanstead and Woodford Friends of the Earth because the Waltham Forest group kept closing and reforming. She became co-coordinator in May 2010 and Ann Williams joined her in 2011, so they've shared the work for a good few years. In that time, they've been given two Earth Movers Awards (which recognise people who have made a real and genuine difference to other peoples' lives through working with environmental issues) and were runners-up for the Friends of the Earth's Group of the Year, making it to the final in 2012. When they won the top prize for the Earth Movers Awards, Diana went to Castelton, Derbyshire to receive it at the annual Friends of the Earth Base Camp (they don't call it a conference or meeting). In 2013, Diana and Ann successfully applied for an Olympic Legacy grant for their Seeds for Snaresbrook project. Diana laughs when she recalls it took four months for the decision to

be made, at which point it was almost too late to get the seeds out for when they had intended. Seeds for Snaresbrook is a community project, and the original idea was that residents and shopkeepers would get involved in seeding tree pits with wildflowers, each taking maybe one location of the roughly 1,200 in the area. This would increase the bee population, give them more forage and be attractive too. They didn't intend to seed all the pits themselves, but in the end, that was what happened. Diana attributes the success of the group to the good working relationship between both coordinators, saying neither of them could have done it single-handed. The collaboration allows both to work to their strengths, as Diana tells me: "What I do is collaborate with others. I don't believe you can do what you're best at on your own. I am best at networking, putting across the ideas, and because of what I believe in, I can't help but be involved in sustainability groups." It's not surprising that both Diana and Ann are feeling tired. While I can't imagine either of them stopping their campaigning, as promised last year, they are standing down from cocoordinating the Wanstead and Woodford Friends of the Earth. They're working hard on recruiting new members, on setting up a transition that will keep the group healthy and are hoping that more people – particularly young ones – will join. Diana said: "Green issues are my passion. I try not to bore people but know I bore my husband. I never used to be political because it seemed like too much hard work. It is hard, but if you're ready for it, it's like a party." They meet on the third Thursday of every month at The Nightingale pub. If you're interested in green issues, why not go along? Alexandra Wilde has been asked to give a presentation to students of a creative writing course at Wanstead House after the tutor read about her local poetry group in the Wanstead Village Directory

I

have been invited to give a short presentation about what inspires me when I write poetry to a group of students on a creative writing course at Wanstead House. The course is run by Jeanne Holland-Young as part of the Redbridge Adult Education evening provision, and when she contacted me about coming along to talk to the group, I was delighted to accept her invitation. Jeanne read about my work with another local poetry group, The Redbridge Rhymesters, which featured in an earlier edition of the Wanstead Village Directory. The magazine provides an excellent forum for news, views and information about what is taking place in the area, and the editor is always encouraging and very supportive of local activities. The creative writing course takes place on Monday evenings. There are two 15-week courses offered every year – one starting in September and the second in February – each with an independent range of activities. Learners engage in a whole range of creative tasks, including flash fiction, short story writing, poetry, monologues, the language of advertising and ten-minute playwriting. Special themed workshops are also organised as part of the course, and guest speakers are invited to talk to students about their own writing experiences. Each session is geared to stimulate and encourage, with a range of fun warm-up exercises, group quizzes, a chance to read work aloud for feedback, focus topics and 'having a go'. Students enjoy a lively and vibrant atmosphere where everyone is encouraged to talk, read, write and share their work. Most courses end with a public reading, where students present a selection of their work to an invited audience, which includes performances of their ten-minute plays. Currently, students are working on developing a portfolio of poetry, including short forms, such as haiku and tanka, sonnets and ballads, and I have

been asked to come along and talk about what inspires me and how different poems can be created by both internal and external influences. The most important thing to remember is to actually put pen to paper – I usually make the point that creativity is rarely patient! If you can 'capture the butterfly of inspiration' and get something written down, you can always polish the piece later on. The creative writing course at Wanstead House welcomes writers of all levels. Each course is structured to engage anyone interested in developing their writing skills, from total beginners to those with more experience. I will be at Wanstead House on 15 June from 7.30pm to 8pm, and I am really looking forward to what I am sure will be a lively and interesting session. Poetry can be such an expressive way of conveying ideas and emotions; sometimes all that a budding writer needs is a little encouragement to set them off on a world of exploration through words. For more information on future creative writing course courses at Wanstead House, call 020 8989 3693 For more information on The Redbridge Rhymesters or to contact Alexandra Wilde, email alexandra.wilde@ntlworld.com

Not all employee dismissals are as high-profile as that of Jeremy Clarkson, but they can all have important legal ramifications if handled incorrectly, says Stephen Watmore of local solicitors Wiseman Lee

J

eremy Clarkson's high-profile departure from the BBC is a timely reminder that employers need to be sure that their actions in dismissing an employee are lawful. So, what steps should employers take when terminating someone's employment? An employer must consider all consequences before terminating someone's employment. The employee's rights to notice, pay and so on, will depend in part on their contract of employment and any associated documents, a staff handbook for example. These should be carefully reviewed to ensure the employee receives what they are entitled to when they leave. If you dismiss someone because of performance issues, you will first have to ensure you have the necessary evidence in the form of, for example, appraisals, attendance records and any documents relating to disciplinary or grievance issues and sanctions. These must justify the termination as fair and lawful. If the dismissal is justified, it will still be considered unfair unless you follow fair and reasonable procedures. These are usually to be found in the staff handbook, but the gold standard guidance is set out in the ACAS Code of Practice on Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures, which was updated in March this year. If you unreasonably fail to follow this, an employment tribunal can increase any compensatory award it makes against you by up to 25% (or reduce it by up to 25% if an employee fails to follow it). Beware discrimination. A dismissal is discriminatory if it is related to a protected characteristic your employee has, or is thought to have, such as gender, marital or civil partner status, colour, race, nationality or ethnic origin, disability, sexual orientation or gender reassignment, religious or philosophical beliefs, or age. Discrimination can be direct, against a particular employee, or indirect because a provision, criterion or practice that you operate discriminates against particular employees, who can be defined by one of the protected characteristics compared to another group.

If investigations are required they should be completed before termination. They must be fair and there should be a full and accurate record of them. Investigations should be lawful. For example, if an employee's emails and internet use are monitored, company policies should permit this, and relevant laws on data protection and human rights observed. At a disciplinary or grievance hearing, it is sensible for two managers to attend – one to speak and the other to act as a witness. A written note should be taken as a record of what is said. There is generally a right of appeal, so someone unconnected with the events under investigation should be identified at the outset to hear such an appeal should it be necessary. If there is to be a settlement with the employee, ensure they sign a formal settlement agreement, relinquishing their rights to make future claims. Take specialist advice to ensure the agreement is watertight. In the settlement agreement, remind the employee of any non-compete, non-solicitation, nonpoaching or confidentiality clauses they are subject to. It's as well to remind them separately in writing of the consequences of breaching such obligations, so there is a record. Always consider taking specialist legal advice to ensure all risks are identified and minimised. For more information on employment law, call Wiseman Lee on 020 8215 1000
