As a society, we do like to make a 23 1 fuss about numerical landmarks S O L now W in just about every area of our lives. ASCa0ll20ma8rt5in1&8Co8099 From 50th birthdays to millennium celebrations, our penchant for anniversaries neatly divisible by 10 is Y 19 as endearing as it is superficial. A case and counting… DA 2 LI 8 0FF O49 O in point: Her Majesty has now been 0H8 % 02 50 on the throne two years longer than she had at the time of her Diamond Jubilee, yet despite the 341 additional engagements she attended last year alone and despite the three-and-one-third per cent increase in the duration of her reign, the 61st and 62nd anniversaries pale in comparison to that which had a nice round number of 60. ic class crazy

Wanstead

Of course, any superficiality extends only as far as the numbering system itself. The underlying reasons for celebrating any anniversary reach far deeper. It wasn't the number 60 that was the subject of royal celebrations in 2012, it was the Queen's 60 years of reign. The point is, when milestone anniversaries are reached, it's easy to become obsessed with the number and overlook the substance that enabled that number to be attained. The Archbishop of Canterbury made a similar point last month in relation to the centenary celebrations of St Gabriel's Church in Aldersbrook. This month also marks another centenary (of sorts) – the 100th edition of the Wanstead Village Directory. As a monthly publication, we clearly don't have the same bragging rights as St Gabriel's (check back for issue number 1,200 in February 2106), but the sentiment is the same. Just as the congregation at St Gabriel's are honouring more than just the history of their building, we are celebrating more than just the number of issues published. We are celebrating the substance – our readers, contributors and advertisers – that has made those issues possible. And for both St Gabriel's and this publication, the one word that encapsulates that substance – the very essence of our respective longevity – is 'community'. Lee Marquis, Editor

Calling local residents...

The Wanstead Village Directory proudly supports local businesses and we encourage you to do the same. Our High Street is proof enough of the individuality that independent retailers can bring to a town. Help us help these businesses by mentioning the Wanstead Village Directory when responding to adverts.

A note to businesses...

If you are a business that is based in Wanstead, or has a presence in the local community, then we can help you get your message across to our readers. The deadline for inclusion in the July 2014 edition is 20 June 2014. The Wanstead Village Directory is published monthly by Marquis IT LTD and distributed to homes in Wanstead, Snaresbrook and Aldersbrook. Additional copies are available from local public service locations and shops on and around Wanstead High Street.

Stories from the working docks of London

Vintage fair anniversary to feature retro caravan

West India Docks in the early 19th century

Vintage Dotty will be in Wanstead this month

An illustrated talk about the people who once lived and worked on London's docks will be the subject of this months East of London Family History Society meeting. The presentation at Wanstead Library will cover 180 years of history, from the opening of the West

India Docks in 1802 to the unloading of the last cargo ship in the 1980s. Known as 'The Warehouse of the World', these docks created a unique and close-knit community, with many stories to be told. The event will take place at 7pm on 25 June. Call 020 8508 2403

The fourth anniversary of The Wanstead Vintage Fashion and Brocante Fair will feature Vintage Dotty, a retro caravan that will be serving afternoon teas, light lunches and retro ice-creams. The fair – which requires sellers to adhere to a strict date timeline for

their stock (nothing past the 1980s) – was named one of London's top three vintage fairs in the 2012 Vintage Guide to London Awards. The anniversary event will take place from 10am to 4pm on 7 June in Christ Church hall (entry: £2). Visit lovevintage.co.uk

Migrant contributions

Sacred and secular music

Volunteers from Team v Redbridge – the local branch of national youth charity vInspired – celebrated the contributions of migrants to local communities last month as part of a campaign aimed at achieving a better understanding of the people behind this controversial topic. The group have produced a documentary featuring the stories of various Redbridge residents, with charity Eastside Community Heritage agreeing to archive and showcase their work. Visit wavidi.com/tvr

An evening concert of sacred and secular music will take place at Our Lady of Lourdes in Wanstead this month to help raise funds for the upkeep of the church's pastoral centre. The event, which takes place from 8pm on 7 June, will feature the Holst Chamber Choir, who will be performing a diverse range of music, from Purcell to ABBA. There will also be a solo performance by professional musician Caitlin Downie and a chance to hear the church organ. Tickets are £7 (concessions: £4) – call 020 8989 3178

Wanstead Park 1784–1812 The ovvners of

In the 18th of a series of monthly articles looking at the owners of Wanstead Park through history, Richard Arnopp tells how a member of the French Royal Family chose it as his place of exile following the Revolution

B

y 1802, Wanstead House had stood empty for nearly four decades. However, in February of that year it was let, for the first time, to a tenant. Louis Joseph de Bourbon, Prince de Condé, was 66 years old. He was the head of a cadet branch of the French Royal Family, ranked as a Prince of the Blood, and had held a series of civil and military offices, culminating in that of Grand Master of France, making him head of the Royal Household. The Prince had left France in 1789, following the fall of the Bastille, and became one of the principal military leaders of the counterrevolutionary movement. The "Army of Condé" initially fought against the new French Republic in conjunction with the Austrians. Later, it served under British and Russian command, and was finally disbanded only in 1801, after which the prince moved to England. A few weeks after taking possession of Wanstead, Condé wrote to his daughter: "I am now well established in my new estate. It is better described as beautiful than pretty, and I would have desired something less large, but by a

combination of extraordinary circumstances, it proved cheaper to rent than eight or ten much smaller ones that I had seen. Given my situation, that was the deciding factor, and indeed it costs me less than the little perch I occupied in London. I do not use more than about half of the house. The remainder consists of two immense apartments, arranged for entertainment, and absolutely devoid of all French conveniences. They are decorated in old-fashioned style, and are never used, even though they are richly furnished. They resemble the apartments of the King and Queen at home in Chantilly, so that is no real hardship. The two parks are all lawns and woods, with two ponds, a river which has no cascades or running water, but in very nice surroundings. There is a shell grotto worthy of Chantilly, on the edge of a river. I have pleasant views around me, with surroundings made charming by the gentle slopes, hillsides, and many beautiful houses. The approach to mine is by a wide avenue, divided by a large body of water. The house is of twenty-one bays, with a portico of six columns in the centre, and is extremely beautiful in its own right. The stable-block

A bust of the Prince of Condé in Chantilly

The annual rent paid by Condé for the Wanstead estate was £350 in British money, perhaps the equivalent of £40,000 or so in terms of present-day purchasing power. Condé was quickly joined by Maria Caterina Brignole, his mistress of more than 30 years. Born into a noble Genoese family, Maria Caterina had formerly been married to Prince Honoré III of Monaco. However, in 1769 she left him for Condé, who was then a widower of 33, and fled Monaco in circumstances of high melodrama, initially taking refuge in a convent. Divorced by her husband, but unable to remarry during his lifetime (he died only in 1795), she continued to be generally known as the Princess, and later Dowager Princess, of Monaco. Condé and Maria Caterina were only finally married in 1808, at Wanstead, by Dr George Glasse, Rector of Hanwell. It seems they did so mainly to solve an awkward problem of etiquette for Condé's Royal cousins, the titular King Louis XVIII and Queen Marie Joséphine, who were also exiles in England at the time. Barrè Roberts wrote shortly afterward concerning the: "…very curious paper which Mr. Glasse shewed me yesterday – the record or register of the marriage of the Prince de Condé. He officiated at Wanstead on the occasion. The contrast of the Prince's enumeration of his own titles, with the license for 'Louis Joseph de Bourbon, of the parish of Wanstead', is truly curious. The witnesses are all Ducs et Pairs, with most gorgeous titles, and Mr Glasse said he never beheld so interesting a sight as these 'très hauts, très puissans, et très excellens Seigneurs,' descending four or five together from a hackney coach. The Prince owns to seventy-two, and the object of his marriage is only to enable the Queen of France to visit the Princess of Monaco". In a letter to his mother, Edward Jerningham provides a vivid glimpse of life at Wanstead after Dr Glasse's ministrations had restored the Prince and Princess de Condé to respectability, and the King and Queen of France became regular visitors: "On Saturday last, having heard that the King left Wanstead this week, I ordered

a pair of post horses to my chaise, and reached Tilney House at twelve o'clock – I immediately saw the Prince of Condé who said that the King was gone out, but desired I would stay for dinner, and be presented to the Queen… At dinner I sat facing the King and Queen… The Queen ate meagre, the King grâs. After dinner, coffee in the drawing room, and immediately after most of the men went into the adjoining room for billiards, leaving the King, Queen, Prince de Condé, Duke de Bourbon, Madame de Narbonne, Madame de Reuilly, Monsieur de Barantin and myself in a circle. Here we sat half an hour, the King reading aloud the English papers in French, as if it had been in the latter language. At eight o'clock the King looked at his watch and said: 'II est huit heures,' upon which the whole party retired upstairs to their respective apartments." Next month we shall see how Wanstead's Royal exiles were visited by tragedy, as the Prince de Condé's only grandson was kidnapped and shot on the orders of Napoleon Bonaparte. The Friends of Wanstead Parklands is a community group that campaigns for the preservation and improvement of Wanstead Park. is separate, and there are some fine kitchen gardens. These are the details you asked for, my dear child, and I think you have enough for now. All this cost me eight thousand in French francs, and my London house cost me ten thousand."

Home front art Art Group Wanstead is encouraging more local residents to participate in the art trail this year by creating art in their front gardens or by showing work in their windows. Donna Mizzi reports

T

he HomeFront project aims to encourage individuals or groups, adults or children, to try their hand at something completely new, perhaps over summer days and school holidays. The created results should be shown throughout this year's Art Trail Wanstead – from 6 to 21 September. Allotment holders and those who work in the gardens at schools and community centres are also welcome to take part. This year, the art trail has an optional theme, 'Make Art, Not War', to mark a century since the start of World War I. Residents can dig for victory, or come up with ideas that tie in with the anniversary, or alternatively, choose their own subject. It's your garden and your choice. The work could be small and subtle or large-scale and dramatic. It could just involve something as simple as pebble designs or decorating trees. Or go to town, maybe covering your walls with ambitious Gaudi-esque mosaics or creating a fabulous feature. Perhaps your family loves crafts and wants to create a knitted flower border, or build jazzy birdhouses. There may even be someone out in E11 ready to do something ground-breaking to rival the work of land art sculptor and photographer Andy Goldsworthy. Windows can show much more than paintings and photographs. Hanging mobiles, modelmaking, pottery or stained glass could work extremely well for your location. HomeFront is not a gardening event, but if you want to create some topiary, or make a statement by sowing a swathe of poppies, then go ahead. There are no registration procedures nor entry fees for HomeFront. We want to keep the creativity flowing, rather than families having to fill out paperwork. We will only ask participators to collect and display an art trail poster nearer the time, which will be widely available, to show they are taking part in the event. Participants will also be invited to send photos of their display to

be put on the art trail's website. They can, if they wish, state where the display can be seen. For those with great ideas and no garden of their own, another alternative is 'borrowing' a front garden with the permission of the owner. The main aim is for residents to enjoy adding extra interest to Wanstead's residential roads, which can be appreciated by neighbours and other passersby. Working in a front garden is generally also a very sociable experience, as people stop to chat and neighbours get to know each other. Building a stronger community is another aim of the art trail. Artists who want to take part in the main Art Trail Wanstead event should join Art Group Wanstead and enrol for the trail before 30 June. Membership is free, although there is a £20 fee to enrol for showing work in High Street shops and community venues (the art group takes no commission from sales on the trail). Zeppelin nights At Wanstead Library this month, award-winning historian Jerry White will be discussing his latest book Zeppelin Nights, which takes a look at life in London during the First World War

F

or most of us, the very thought of 'London at war' means just one thing – the Blitz. That extraordinary drama so dominates the idea of wartime London that it is hard to imagine the city and its people affected in any special way by the war of 1914 to 1918. The First World War seems to rank as a sideshow compared to the cataclysm of 1940 to 1941. The truth is much more interesting. From the moment war was declared at 11pm on Tuesday 4 August 1914, London became the hub of an ever-enlarging leviathan of total war. The war dominated the city's life. It changed everything – not just for those four-and-a-quarter years, but for generations after. Even in the 21st century, Londoners still live with many of the consequences of the First World War. The war had this impact because London occupied a far more dominating place in both nation and empire in 1914 than it did even 25 years later. The national and imperial war effort was directed from London in almost every theatre of war. A large part of the nation's munitions were manufactured there. Almost every British soldier on his way to active service moved through it and most spent some time there. Soldiers in their hundreds of thousands from Australia and New Zealand, Canada and the USA saw something of the sights of London, from St Paul's to the Alhambra Theatre, from the Houses of Parliament to the brothels of the Waterloo Road. It was to London that the wounded were brought bleeding from France and Belgium, even from Gallipoli and Mesopotamia, and to London that refugees from the war-torn territories sought respite and perhaps to start a new life. And it was London that epitomised the wholehearted commitment – and from time to time the fearful stresses and disturbances – of a nation under nerve-breaking strain, daily affected by the shifting fortunes of total war. Small wonder that this strategic centre of the British and Imperial war effort was considered a legitimate target for military aggression from Zeppelins and Gotha bombers.

I have tried to tell the story of this astonishing time by focusing on the daily life of Londoners, especially the daily experience of the mass of Londoners – the diarists, men and women, who recognised from the moment of war's declaration or a few days before that they were living through world-historic events; the memoirists of all classes who recorded their experiences after the event; the individuals running some of London's public and private institutions as the fortunes of war impacted on their working lives; something, in short, of the lives of patriots and pacifists, wounded soldiers and nurses, businessmen and munitionettes, clergymen and thieves, bluestockings and prostitutes. In doing so, and despite so much misery coming the way of so many, I have tried to bear in mind Hallie Miles's hope when she came to publish her wartime diary a dozen years after the Armistice, that it might 'help to remind people of what a wonderful place London was in war time.' Jerry will be discussing his book Zeppelin Nights: London in the First World War at Wanstead Library on 23 June from 7pm. Tickets are £5 – call 020 8708 7400

Masterpiece mystery A painting of unknown origin, an artist with a squint and an intriguing link to Chicago. Now, the Courtauld Institute of Art hopes to solve the masterpiece mystery of St Mary's Church. Penelope Garlick reports

A

very large painting hangs behind and over the altar in St Mary's Church. The progress of time has not been particularly kind and the picture is now very dark and somewhat dilapidated. Ageing varnish, years of damp, candle soot and the fumes from long-gone gas lighting have all taken their toll. But take a closer look beneath a century – and possibly much more – of wear (but happily no tear) and you'll discover not only a masterpiece, but also a rather interesting story. A story that has now piqued the interest of the Courtauld Institute of Art. So first of all, where does the painting come from? A moving portrayal of Christ's body being gently prepared for burial, it made the short journey to St Mary's from Christ Church in 1890. Before that, however, the origins remain a mystery. Following some initial detective work by a local parishioner, others took up the mantle with a visit to Chicago's Institute of Art. It was there they found hanging another, pristine version of the picture, enabling them to finally admire the work in all its glory. The Entombment of Christ by Guercino was commissioned 'by an unknown knight' in 1656. Giovanni Francesco Barbieri was born in 1591 and nicknamed Guercino (the squinter) because of the cast in his eye. One of the most soughtafter painters of his time, his patrons included Pope Gregory XV, Maria de' Medici of France and Charles I of England. His most striking compositions are still considered among the greatest Italian Baroque masterpieces, alongside those of Caravaggio, Cortona and Bernini. Whether the version at St Mary's is the original, a 17th-century studio copy or a later 19th-century reproduction remains open to conjecture. And that's where the Courtauld Institute of Art comes in. One of the world's leading centres for

the study of the history of art, the college was intrigued enough to set up a research project that aims to discover the truth. The process will involve taking the picture away for in-depth investigation, including X-rays, and may also lead to long-overdue cleaning and conservation work. Interestingly, the Institute of Art in Chicago is also undertaking separate research into its own version. So, when the truth is finally revealed, who will own the copy and who the real thing? St. Mary's Church is located on Overton Drive, Wanstead. Services are held every Sunday morning at 11am and visitors are also welcome on Saturday mornings, between 11am and 1pm. For more information, visit www.parishofwanstead.org The Parish of Wanstead will be staging an opera gala event from 5.30pm on Saturday 28 June at Christ Church, Wanstead Place, Wanstead to raise funds for the restoration of St Mary's Church. Take a stroll around Wanstead Park's ponds and lakes on any warm, sunny day from now until September and you are likely to see some of the most remarkable insects we have in this country, says Tim Harris of the Wren Wildlife Group. Here he describes some of his favourite flying creatures

ccording to the fossil record, dragonflies first flew about 325 million years ago. They shared our planet with dinosaurs during the Jurassic and Cretaceous period and they and their damselfly cousins (collectively called the Odonata) have evolved into over 5,000 species. Most of these live in the tropics, but we have 40-odd species here in the UK and at least 15 of these are seen regularly in Wanstead Park. They are dependent on a supply of fresh water to thrive. After mating, a female lays her fertilised eggs in the leaf or stem of an aquatic plant, or even on the water surface, and the eggs hatch into an aquatic larval stage. This is actually how the dragon or damsel spends most of its life. Typically, the larvae live and hunt in fresh water for one or two years before metamorphosing into a four-winged flying adult. Some remain aquatic for longer: the Golden-ringed Dragonfly, for example, spends up to five years as a larva. As it gets bigger, the larva moults its old skin and grows a newer, bigger one. Eventually it crawls from the water and an adult bursts through the larval skin. The wings unfurl and dry and the adult flies away. It will grace our skies for only a fraction of the time it terrorised insects underwater. Damselflies Our local damselflies look like brightly-coloured flying needles and basically come in two colours: red and blue. The first to emerge – sometimes on warm days in March – are Large Red Damselflies. They're not actually very large – only 33mm to 36mm long – but they are certainly red. They have a long season and can frequently be seen flying well into September. The 'blues' come in a variety of forms, all differing quite subtly in their patterns of pale blue and black stripes, but they make up the majority of the Odonata that can be seen in Wanstead Park during the summer. Azure, Common Blue and Blue-tailed Damselflies behave much the same, moving forward a few centimetres, then stopping mid-air, then jerking forward again, all the time keeping fairly close to the water. If they rest in waterside vegetation, as they often do, they become almost invisible, but as you walk past they will appear as if from nowhere. Red-eyed Damselflies act a little differently, spending long periods resting on lily pads in

ied

Red-eyed Dams elfly Wanstead Park's Opposite: Band ed Demoiselle Ornamental Waters, in particular, between May and August. A close relative, the Small Red-eyed Damselfly, invaded this country from the continent a few years ago and hasn't looked back. It is now a regular breeder in Wanstead Park and often outnumbers its slightly larger cousin. Look along the northern shore of the Shoulder of Mutton pond in July or August and you have a pretty good chance of seeing some. The Banded Demoiselle is the most striking of them all. Because it likes flowing water, the best place to see this beauty is along the banks of the River Roding. The male's translucent wings have a dark, iridescent band running across them and the body is metallic blue-green. Dragonflies Unlike damselflies, which fold their wings along the length of their body, the larger dragonflies hold their wings out to the sides. Their names are wonderfully suggestive of their behaviour. Broad-bodied Chasers start to fly on warm days in May; look out for them close to the Shoulder of Mutton pond. The giant Emperor, up to 84mm long, delights in chasing other dragons from its territory when it emerges in June. It can fly up to 35 km/h and, as it catches midges and other small flying insects, the snap of its closing jaws can be heard! In July, Black-tailed Skimmers can be seen basking on the concrete edges of Heronry Lake, and Migrant Hawkers and Common Darters also appear on the scene in high summer, the latter often still flying well into October. S† Gabriel's century As centenary celebrations continue at St Gabriel's Church in Aldersbrook this month, Lisa Chalmers reports on two communitybased art projects that have engaged the congregation

W

hat would make a good 100th birthday present? A blanket? A diary maybe? But what if the recipient isn't a person? St Gabriel's Church in Aldersbrook celebrates its 100th birthday this year and choosing a gift is a tricky business. Father Martyn Hawkes says: "St Gabriel's is a place of prayer and worship and we're keen to make sure that the year of celebration reflects that in a lasting and visible way with something beautiful and spiritually rich." The result is two unusual and engaging art projects. As a devotional work of art, an icon fitted the bill and Irina Bradley, a British iconographer of Russian origin, was commissioned. Irina follows traditional methods of icon painting using only natural materials (including eggs from the vicarage chickens). For Irina, "icons are created by prayer, for prayer." Our icon is of the Annunciation, chosen for St Gabriel, but also one of Irina's favourite subjects in iconography. "I see it as a profound visual message of the Christian doctrine on the incarnation rendered through composition and colour," she says. The composition includes the Virgin Mary receiving the news, her right hand's gesture indicates acceptance. Behind the Archangel Gabriel is a church, a reference to St Gabriel's. The congregation gilded the icon with gold leaf under Irina's supervision and she shared some of her extensive knowledge on the symbolism of icons. Every aspect of the process and the completed work is rich with meaning. The vanishing point is in front of the painting, so the person praying is included in the scene. The finished work will be dedicated at the Festival of St Gabriel in September. Father Martyn says: "We are excited to welcome the icon into our life of prayer, to deepen our engagement with God and to invite others to explore its depth and beauty." Parishioner Claire Misata was introduced to Kat Hall by chance and the second art project was decided. Kat is a mosaic and community artist with over eight years of experience. Initially, a small team met Kat to pin down the design. Her

Irina Bradley at work

The community mosaic

knowledge and experience was invaluable as she encouraged and supported the team's creativity. The baptism of Christ was decided as a theme. Christ's image was included in profile with many skin-tones. The Spirit of God is represented as a dove, descending on Christ and all future baptismal candidates. Local elements, such as the heron, connect the design to St Gabriel's. After Kat miraculously detailed the design on a large wooden board, it was time to bring in the congregation. Kat showed everyone how to cut and stick tiles. Over the next couple of months, many people tirelessly cut and stuck! Claire was delighted: "The project engaged congregation members of all ages; everyone was able to enjoy it." Finally, the last piece was glued down and Kat led the grouting. The mosaic was unveiled during the Dedication Festival last month. Friendly and knowledgeable staff willing to give straightforward answers without any hassle – as a landlord with not much time on my hands that’s exactly what I was after – very good overall.

Mar tin & Co provided good communication throughout the lettings process, although it didn’t take very long for them to find me a suitable tenant – many thanks.

A very good and thorough service; in lettings, as we quickly found out, there is a lot of necessary paperwork. However, we felt we were in safe hands and the staff always guided us smoothly through the process.

We did the usual and met with several estate agents before deciding who to market our house with. However, we thought that dealing directly with the owner of the business gave us a greater sense of security.

quilters & campaigners Marsh Quilters member Diane Giles talks about what can be expected at the group's Wanstead exhibition this month and explains how a campaign to save Walthamstow Marshes led to 35 years of quilting

I

n 1979, a group of women who supported the 'Save The Walthamstow Marshes Campaign' began meeting in their homes to create a quilt. This quilt was used by the Walthamstow Marsh Society to promote the marshes as an educational resource. From this humble beginning, other quilts were made to raise funds for a variety of charities and the Marsh Quilters were born. Marsh Quilters are a small, friendly, local group of about 35 quilters, ranging in age from mid-20s through to mid-70s, including beginners and professionals and everything in between. We have a common interest in patchwork, quiltmaking, appliqué and embroidery and related subjects and meet up on a the first Thursday of every month at the Leytonstone United Free Church.

Spurred on by the success of our last exhibition in 2011, we decided to have another one this year, taking place in the beautiful setting of Wanstead's ChristMarsh Church hall. As well as a Quilters general display of members' work, there will Exhibition be a Marsh Quilters' challenge entitled 'So Many Colours', for which our members were invited to make something no larger than 1m 14 :: 11 -- 4 by Saturday 1m. Donna Mizzi

"H

ave you any idea of the price of glitter these days?" That's Donna Mizzi, who runs the Flamingo Fairs, where she sells her arts and crafts. She's a journalist too, which made her a challenge to interview. She had her own agenda and I had to be really sharp to get what I needed for this article, even though she had agreed to it and knew the format before we started. Like the angel she keeps insisting she isn't, she was insistent that I include other people too. About Tomasz Wlodarczyk, who took over running Art Group Wanstead for a year, she says: "He did a mega job. It really is full time, running up to the art trail it can be 60 hours a week or more. Tomasz managed it all while also working hard to revive a flagging charity." That must have been hard and I understand

why she wants him acknowledged, but Donna set up the group and ran it for three years first. I asked her how it started: "I was at Leytonstone Arts Trail and I did what probably dozens of people did and wished my own area had something like this going on. Friends had been selling my work in their shop, but I couldn't carry on relying on their generosity for ever, and I thought that it would be great to get to know other local people who liked doing art, and sell my pieces at the same time," she explained. "Now you see I didn't set it up for angelic reasons." She got more than she bargained for. Instead of the 30 or 40 people she expected, Art Group Wanstead – which was formed in 2010 – comprises of more than 180 individuals.

It has a different character to the one in Leytonstone and is doing well. The group has successfully applied for grants and the new committee (it's now far too much work for one person) has lots of ideas to get more people from our local communities involved in unpretentious and enjoyable ways. While always part of a team (she says she always planned for different people to run the art trail each year in order to bring in new ideas – I suspect she hadn't expected to lead it for so long), Donna has been very successful in getting local business participation, but it's telling stories of individuals that makes her really smile. One person who had been painting for 50 years showed his work to the public for the first time at an art trail. Another told her that she didn't know what she'd have done without the group as it helped her take her mind of a terrible phase of her life. Someone else was able to demonstrate through his participation that he was still developing new skills while unemployed, which he is sure encouraged new employers to hire him. On a completely different note, some years ago Donna successfully arranged for security camera coverage of a potentially dangerous corner of Wanstead (the second cameras to be used in the borough after those placed in Ilford town centre). Then there are the Flamingo Fairs; arts and crafts fairs that extend the conventional perceptions of the difference between arts and crafts in fun and quirky ways. Like Art Trail Wanstead, this was originally supported by the manager at The George, who gave use of the whole first floor of the pub to the fairs until he moved on. Donna has stepped back from running the Art Group for personal reasons, but still helps behind the scenes. In her spare time she has found an exciting and surprisingly inexpensive alternative to glitter. Look out for diamond dust in her future works. Email suggestions for stories and models for a 2015 Angels in Wanstead charity calendar to opkikkertje@gmail.com or leave a message for Carole at The Larder, 39 High Street, Wanstead.

London for free Local resident Francesca Fenn is a co-founder of Step Outside Guides, a series of child-friendly books designed to help families enjoy London for free. Here she explores three museums you may have missed

W

e are incredibly fortunate in London to enjoy free access to our major museums, housing some of the world's great treasures. The Natural History, Science, V&A and British Museums and the National and Tate Galleries are fabulous places, and are justifiably famous. This month, however, we're going to look at a few smaller museums that won't use up a whole day, but are well worth a visit. Many small museums find they need to charge for entry, but true to Step Outside Guide's mandate, these ones are all free. The Hunterian Museum This is the museum of the Royal College of Surgeons and is named after John Hunter, an eminent 18th century surgeon and anatomist. It is a fascinating collection for anyone remotely interested in biology and the human body, but quite gory in parts, so a parental guidance warning comes with this recommendation. Among the items on display are a skeleton of a man who was 2.31m (7' 7”) tall, hundreds of other skeletons and preserved corpses, body parts of animals and people and a collection of historical surgical instruments that are guaranteed to make you shudder. Soane Museum Sir John Soane was an eminent 18th and 19th century architect who designed, among other things, the Bank of England. He was also an avid collector and his home, which has been left as it was when he lived there, is stuffed full with an astonishing array of wonderful things: paintings; statues and carvings; fragments of ancient buildings; stained glass windows; and even a hieroglyph-covered Egyptian Sarcophagus. Don't miss the Picture Room – it is small and almost miraculous. The Soane Museum is one of Step Outside Guide's favourite London treasures. We visit it in London Treasure Trail, as well as spending time exploring the delightful square which sits between here and The Hunterian Museum.

The Geffrye Museum

The Geffrye Museum The Geffrye Museum is devoted to the history of English middle-class homes and gardens. Set in a beautiful series of almshouses in Hackney, it has reconstructed living rooms and gardens covering the last 400 years, giving a delightful and enlightening wander. Notwithstanding the slight unease felt when one's childhood furniture is displayed as a museum piece, this is a lovely place to visit, with a rolling programme of extra activities and exhibitions. We hope you enjoy your days out. There are an almost infinite number of ways to spend a day in London without breaking the bank, so put on your walking shoes, pack a picnic and discover London for yourself. The Hunterian Museum: 35-43 Lincoln's Inn Fields, WC2A 3PE (Holborn or Chancery Lane station) – call 020 7869 6560 Soane Museum: 13 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London, WC2A 3BP (Holborn or Chancery Lane station) – call 020 7405 2107 The Geffrye Museum: 136 Kingsland Road, London, E2 8EA (Hoxton overground station) – call 020 7739 9893 Step Outside Guides are priced £5 each. The art of craft Local photographer Geoff Wilkinson has been based at 'Eightyfour' on Nightingale Lane since 2008. Having launched a craft boutique at the gallery last month, Geoff offers some creative inspiration

A

s well as framing, photography workshops and restoring damaged photographs, we have, for some time now, been producing our own greeting cards as well as personalised greeting cards and gift boxes for others. Customers visiting the gallery have been asking: "How do you do that, would I be able to do my own?" Well, now they can, as we are stocking art and craft items such as paints, rubber stamps, papers, glues and inks. This will enable people to produce their own cards, invitations, wooden projects, journals and scrapbooks. We will be holding regular workshops and demonstrations with invited guests from the craft industry to show you how to make your own variety of craft products. There is an enormous interest in crafts at the moment, just look at the revival of knitting in the last few years and the weavers and potters now working from home. However, at our new craft boutique, we are following the same philosophy that we have with our photography workshops, and that is to make things simple so that everyone can create a piece of work, whether they are experienced or a novice just starting out. There is nothing more personal than a gift that you have created yourself.

Craft Boutique at 84

Creating a vintage wedding tag 1. Size 8 Manila tag; background distressed using Tim Holtz picket fence distress paint. 2. An additional layer of vintage photo distress stain is applied.

Although we aim to carry as much as we can in the way of traditional craft materials, we are not going to restrict ourselves to just card and paperbased crafts – there is also a growing following for digital scrapbooking. This involves making a virtual scrapbook on your computer using word processing programs and a simplified version of Adobe Photoshop. To help people with this, we will be running workshops and making some of our extensive library of photographs available for crafters to use in their projects.

3. Red hearts are added using a stencil and mini fired-brick distress ink pad.

Work can hurt Maxine Dunn, a litigation executive in the personal injury department of local solicitors Wiseman Lee, presents a list of 10 important things to do if you are hurt in an accident at work

I

f you sustain an injury at work you may be entitled to make a claim for compensation. While you may decide not to take legal action against your employer until the extent of your injuries has become clear, there are certain steps you should take to assist yourself in bringing a claim in the future. 1. Report the accident to your line manager or supervisor as soon as possible. If your accident is serious, you must ensure that your employer informs the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). 2. Make a record of your accident in your employer's accident book. If no such book exists, you should write down the details of your accident and send a copy to both your line manager or supervisor and the HR department of your workplace. 3. Seek medical attention either from A&E or your local GP, even if your injuries do not seem serious. If you wish to make a claim for compensation you will be able to use your medical notes to prove that you suffered an injury as a result of your accident. 4. Take down the full names and contact details of any witnesses to your accident as soon as you are able to do so. If you wish to make a claim for compensation your solicitor may need to collect statements from them. 5. Take photographs of the accident scene, paying close attention to the cause of your accident. If your injuries are visible you should capture them on camera too. 6. Keep a diary. If you wish to file a compensation claim you will need to prove that your injuries caused you pain and suffering. Keeping a personal injury diary will help you to record all the details of your injuries and the effects they have on your life. 7. Retain receipts. To recover compensation for your out-of-pocket expenses, you must keep

receipts and other details of your expenses. The more evidence you can provide, the easier it will be for you to recoup all of your losses. 8. Sick pay. If you need to take time off work as a result of your injury, you should be eligible to receive statutory sick pay from your employer. Depending on the seriousness of the injury, you may also be able to claim industrial injuries disablement benefit from the government. 9. Seek advice. Following an injury at work, you should seek legal advice from an accident solicitor. They will be able to assess the details of your case and determine your eligibility for compensation. 10. Pursue a claim. If you wish to bring a claim for compensation, you must do so within three years of the date of your accident. If you fail to make your claim within the time limit you will lose your right to receive compensation. For more information on personal injury claims and other legal issues, call Wiseman Lee on 020 8215 1000

Keep them safe

Ahead of Child Safety Week, Louise Addison outlines some sobering A&E statistics and explains some of the ways parents can help their kids to think about their own safety

D

id you know that accidental injury is the second biggest killer of children in the UK. Only childhood cancer accounts for more deaths. Every week in the UK one child dies in a preventable accident, and around 300 children end up in A&E every day. Needless to say, the onus is on the parent to keep them away from risk. Worryingly, children from the poorest UK families are 13 times more likely to die and three times more likely to be injured in a road accident. Child Safety Week runs from 23 to 29 June and is organised by the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT). They stress that although many accidents can be prevented – often through simple changes to daily routines – the number that have occurred over the last five years has remained about the same.

This article is only available in the printed edition

CAPT run awareness campaigns to explain how most accidents can be easily prevented. Parents often misunderstand the dangers their children face daily. For example, a child is hundreds of times more likely to be killed crossing a road than by a predatory kidnapper. But the media focus on paedophile scare-stories, so parents over-estimate the risk of stranger danger and underestimate the risks involved in more mundane scenarios. To put it in perspective, fewer than eight children per year are murdered in the UK, whereas nearly 400 are killed in household or traffic accidents.

zz To avoid burn and scald risks: always put the cold water in first when running a bath; keep hot drinks out of reach of babies and toddlers; and take care with hair-straighteners and always turn them off after use.

As mornings can be a particularly stressful and accident-prone time, for this year's campaign CAPT have enlisted the help of Safety Superheroes, who will do battle with the villainous Morning Mayhem! Watch out for them in various events this month.

There are many reasons why accidents happen. Some hazards are always obvious, others may be overlooked amid the daily pressures of caring for children and the rush to get things done, and some are caused by sudden changes in a childs development.

zz Make sure your child knows how to call for emergency help – they might just save someone's life.

Here are three top tips to keep your kids safe: zz Make sure they stop, look and listen when crossing the road on the way to school (and again on their way home).
