YOU PRACTICED, PRACTICED, AND PRACTICED SOME MORE. NOW, DRIVING FEELS LIKE SECOND NATURE, SOMETHING YOU CAN DO WHILE BELTING OUT YOUR FAVORITE TUNES ON THE RADIO. IMPRESSIVE, RIGHT? WELL, THIS IS WHERE THE CONCEPT OF NEUROPLASTICITY COMES INTO PLAY.

Neuroplasticity is like the magic behind the growth mindset. It's what enables us to develop skills and knowledge through effort, practice, and determination.

So, why should we teach kids about neuroplasticity? When children grasp this concept, it changes how they see their own abilities. They become more open to the idea of a growth mindset and are more comfortable with making mistakes and facing challenges.

But what exactly is neuroplasticity? It's the brain's ability to change and grow throughout our lives. In the past, scientists believed our brains became set in their ways after childhood, but now we know better. Our brains keep changing, even as we get older.

Think of your brain like a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it becomes. Your brain loves to recognize patterns. When it detects a specific pattern, it becomes quicker and more efficient at using that pattern in the future.

So, when you practice something, your brain remembers it and makes it easier each time you do it again.

In short, our brains aren't set in stone. With practice and challenges, we can create pathways in our brains that make them stronger and smarter.

verything feels connected to God. All of the things in Bali always have a story behind them, including the Black Magic. Even nowadays, people still use Black Magic to do something bad to a person because of jealousy. One of them might be dead afterwards. As I said, everything in Bali has a story behind it. In this case, there are a lot of stories about the Balinese Black Magic but the most famous one is called “CalonArang”. So, what is it?

Calonarang is a performance that tells a story about a witch named Calon Arang that has a super strong Balinese black magic called “Leak”. She often damages farmers’ crops and causes diseases around the time of King Airlangga (1006-1042). Even sometimes(not sometimes but every time) the performance uses the real Balinese black magic itself to make it more realistic. One of them spit fire naturally from his mouth during the performance, reanimated corpses, stabbed their body with a kris (asymmetrical dagger) without getting injured, and many more. Yes, Calonarang is a public event that everyone can watch, but you need to pay respect by wearing a Balinese outfit if you want nothing to happen to you.

Old Balinese people say that the audience is not allowed to come home when the performance is still going, because the black magic that they use during the performance is still running around the area. People go home because they get scared because every time during Calonarang, the actor and the audience always get tranced by the black magic and usually they automatically dance and stab their body or people around them with kris like I said before. But you can go home if you want to see what happens next. Fun fact, there are a lot of volunteers that gave their bodies to summon the black magic during the performance (don’t worry, they will be back alive if they are lucky, if not, then it's going to be the last goodbye). However, this performance only happens sometime during a full moon and takes place in a graveyard. Also, they do it with a full pure Balinese language which means if you want to go you probably need some Balinese people to help to translate it. But it is a good experience to have while in Bali, seeing people killing each other is a pretty good idea.

Ngurek Tradition STABBING BODIES WITH KERIS

T

he Ngurek tradition or in some regions call it Ngunying is a tradition that still survives and is carried out by the Balinese people. Ngurek is a tradition that for some people is considered extreme, namely by piercing one’s own body with a dagger, spear, or other sharp tool while in a state of trance.

Now Ngurek is also served as a performance attraction that still has a spiritual breath. However, Ngurek is a dance form that has aesthetic and spiritual values. This tradition is closely related to religious rituals that are believed by the Balinese people as a tangible form of devotion to Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa (God Almighty) who has given grace. To repay what He gave, humans make sincere holy sacrifices by stabbing their bodies.

The Ngurek tradition is known as a highly extreme tradition to do. A person who undergoes this ritual will hurt himself by stabbing himself with a keris (ceremonial knife). However, a person who does it is not in a conscious state (possessed), therefore they do not feel pain. Ngurek in its literal meaning comes from the word “Urek” which means to punch or pierce.

Therefore, the implementation carried out in the ritual is to stab oneself.

Someone who performs ngurek must also be pure both physically and mentally. The entry of the Spirit into the performers can be seen from the state of the borers who are shivering, shaking, groaning, and squealing. Then he can stab the keris in the upper body part of the navel such as the chest, forehead, shoulders, neck, eyebrows, and eyes. In such a condition, another spirit that enters the body provides strength, causing the person who performs Ngurek to become immune.

Thus, by the presence of the Spirit, the performer may not feel anything even though he stabs his body very hard.
