How to Build Resilience in

Competence

Competence is being able to look at stressful situations and say, "I've got this." Kids who exhibit competence stay calm under pressure and, when issues arise, can tackle them. When something does go wrong, they know they can do better next time.

• Let them struggle and solve problems and handle challenges on their own. Try to only intervene when they really need it.

• Teach them how to ask for help and that it’s empowering to ask for help.

• Provide them with feedback that helps them understand where they succeeded and where they can improve.

• Teach them perfect doesn’t exist. Help them set reasonable goals and encourage them to add "yet" when they feel they"can't do something."

Confidence

Confident young people have the skills to handle the challenges life throws at them without much hesitation. Instilling confidence is the cornerstone of raising resilient kids.

• Let kids have boundaries and teach them how to say "no" when they need to and when something doesn’t feel right.

• Teach them about self love and accepting themselves while still working to improve.

Connection

Connection allows children to feel like they belong somewhere and know they have someone they can turn to when they need it.

When young peope feel connected, they are less likely to hurt themselves or others and instead show greater empathy.

• Help your child explore different hobbies and find out what piques their interest. From there, they can start forming connections with others who share their passion.

• It can be difficult to make friends and nearly impossible to have conflictfree relationships. Discuss what good friendships involve with your kids.

Character

Having character is knowing right from wrong and sticking with your values. Kids with strong character have higher self-esteem, show empathy, and feel they can make good choices.

• Teach them not to compare themselves to others. Comparing oneself to others can make kids want to bring others down and change their opinions of themselves. Likewise, being unkind to others or feeling less-than (or morethan) can affect their understanding of right and wrong.

• Watch movies with characters that display positive and negative character traits and discuss how the characters show resilience and other positive qualities.

Contribution

Contribution is what we give to the world with our attitude and behavior. Knowing they make the world better—even on bad days—encourages kids to bounce back.

• Teach your kids about acts of kindness and brainstorm ones you can do together.

• Invite kids to voice their thoughts during family meetings. This shows you value their thoughts and giving them ownership over their own decisions can help kids become resilient and responsible.

Coping

How often do we tell kids "deal with it" or even "get over it," not realizing they may not know how to cope with their situation? Adequate coping skills must be taught.

• Read stories together and have children identify the characters' emotions and what they think the characters should do.

• Acknowledge their feelings and allow them to let feelings out when appropriate rather than letting them build.

• Teach them about mindfulness and to come up with strategies to recenter themselves in difficult situations.

Control

Control is about knowing what you're in charge of and what you're not. There are things in this life that are simply out of our hands, all we can control is how we react to them.

• Praise kids for things they can control, like their effort, rather than things they can't control, like their innate gifts. Knowing their efforts matter more than anything can build resilience in children because it gives them permission to "fail" and try again.

Maybe you are already familiar with the paraphrased quotes by Albert Einstein in that ‘You can’t solve problems with the same thinking that created them. And of course wherever our understanding is with these, we’re still hearing them confined by our current limits of thinking.

What this means is that the quality of our actions must be driven by the quality of our thinking. And this rings especially true for the way in which we are designing our days, lives, and all that we’re hoping to achieve. Society has done a fantastic job at creating an ambition driven world - granted, it's not for everyone but most can relate.

Let's give some gratitude and appreciation to ‘living the dream’ in Bali right now (or being on holiday)! ...but then, that is an easy phrase to quote. And to say anything less would be rude and possibly even an insult to those who aren’t so ‘lucky’ to have our reality right?

Some common themes which appear to be shared with ease are; some have ‘escaped’ from a job/career they didn’t like, a climate that wasn’t their ideal, or a lifestyle crisis that felt appropriate to be left behind. Or conversely, many have been drawn to affordable luxuries, inescapable idyllic settings daily, and freedoms from the confines of scheduled living.

So I wonder, when you ask yourself about ‘living the dream’, does it come from a true inner feeling that you are emotionally attached to? Or is it coming from a logical place of ‘I am ticking the boxes, it looks good, and everyone says how lucky I am’ Therefore it must be ‘the dream’?

You might have also noticed that conversations still echo themes from 'real world'. Being that we’ve achieved so much, living a great lifestyle, and having so much available to be grateful for, there is still the

overwhelming undertone of; “I’ll be happy when…(insert outcome here)”

When the epiphany is made that this is the social conditioning of ambition for more, for bigger, better, faster, better looking, that it doesn’t actually fulfill the human soul and personal calling; We must shift towards meaning.

‘You can’t keep doing the same thing and expect a different outcome’.

Meaning and fulfillment is a totally different outcome, therefore it requires a totally different approach, strategy, and thinking to discover it. Most people seem to be avoiding it. Is it because there isn’t a clear path? Maybe. It’s not publicly rewarded? Probably. Is it uncertain and socially risky? No doubt! Worth it? Absolutely!

If we are not actively bringing intention to discovering a life that we can fall in love with, what else could be more important?

The way that we now bridge this gap between the ambition driven world into a meaningful life is to tap into who we are first. For most people this is unfamiliar, and that is okay. It takes practice to really discover what we value, what is important to us, and how any of it really matters. From here, meaning and change can be added consciously to our immediate reality, then profoundly shape our future actions and direction.

You may wish to add the following questions and considerations to your achievements for further appreciation, your actions to improve motivation, and future ideals for greater importance.

How am I spending my time? Who am I spending it with? What am I experiencing? How do I feel as a result? What am I paying attention to? What am I hearing? And during these moments what am I telling myself?

How is any of this important to me?

I invite you to really take the time to dive into the exercise and turn up the meaning for yourself in your life and in your reality that you are shaping. Then check in and ask yourself if this is worth you taking responsibility for now?

And if it’s not you, then who? And if it's not now then when?

I’d love to invite you to download the free resources here to give you a framework to follow and bring the exercise to life even more for you in where you’re currently at.

This is the fourth of a series of articles that each represent a module from my Adventurepreneur Accelerator Program. It is designed to provide the thinking and structure required to create a life that you can fall even more in love with. Stay posted for future articles for more free valuable resources!

a bit about yourself?

I'm a recovering 'slave of the system' discovering life in Bali. It's been 2 years and now 34 I am so grateful to have created change in my life when I did! Although from New Zealand, was pretty established in Australia until the much needed Covid escape presented in Oct 2020. Life and all of the experiences has never been better for me.

What you do in Bali?

I initially arrived as an emerging entrepreneur with my global water sports apparel brand. And it didn't take too long after realizing that I was already 'Living the dream' to discover life requires so much more than an indelic insta reel to feel full and content. All my focus turned to creating a life I could fall in love with. Through lots of personal development, the journey became falling back in love with myself first. Scary & challenging - Yes. Worth it - Absolutely. This has become my personal passion. Previously, I was coaching in the entrepreneurial space which has now evolved into coaching men that are now trying to navigate the shift from an ambition driven world into a meaning driven life.

how long have you been training at wanderlust?

Since the first week I arrived! First session was the Saturday Smasher - classic stitch up by my brother. Somehow I made it back after my first session though and love it more than ever. It hasn't been an easy ride though having to overcome an ongoing back injury from the past but overall I'm in the best physical shape of my life.

why did you choose wanderlust?

Honestly, just because this is what I was shown and didn’t know any different. I have now come to know through that Wanderlust is the place to be… even globally when speaking to Crossfit enthusiasts who have been following me for years! I tried other places, but missed the Wanderlust community, so now I am here to stay now.

what are your fitness goals?

Mostly to just feel fit and strong while having fun with it. I love the idea of being ripped, but being honest with myself, it's just not that important for me to do what it would take. I’d love to be able to reach a solid women RX result on the majority of the workouts. Gymnastics is my weakness which need improving.

any fitness milestones you have achieved so far?

Before Crossfit, I was unable to squat. Seriously no lie. That is huge for me, especially given the local toilet situation. Also to be able to say that I am the fitness I’ve ever been and to have reached that at 34 feels great too! what makes you happy outside the gym?

Riding my motorbike on both long road rides, and the dirt trail trips in Kintamani. I love my

clients who inspire me to also continue becoming the best version of me I can be. Getting into Free Driving and practicing the breath holds in the pool has been super rewarding in many different ways - 5:50 mins PB! I’ve discovered that I am happiest when I allow myself to drop the drama of the day, let go of the worry in the future and really appreciate the moment - this is still a work in progress.  tips for beginners at CrossFit? People care more about how you’re showing up rather than what you’re actually doing. So drop the weights, focus on where you’re at, hold onto the feedback by the instructors, and have fun. Celebrate your progress no matter how small, and enjoy the afterglow over a drink with everyone else. your favourite lift or movement?

Clean & Jerk always gives me a little excitement haha. Not sure what it is about them though!

who or what inspires you?

I am generally inspired by genuine passion.

Passionate people light me up when hearing them share about what they love. In the gym, it's always the person next to me that is really pushing every rep, doing the best they can in the hardest moment, that inspires me to reach a little deeper and rock on to the end with them too.

what challenges did you overcome last year?

The last 18 months have been a roller coaster that has changed me forever. All personally defining moments that included major injury, mental challenges from Covid, death in the family, relationship break up, all coming together in a perfect storm. Overcoming and see the otherside of all of this has unlocked more than I could previously imagine.

how is 2022 looking for you?

Well we’re in the last quarter now - so crazy! Lots in the pipeline for business and personal. Trips to Europe, Mexico, Australia, and NZ before the new year so Bali might have to take a back set for a minute.

Parasailing

bali is a freeflying game in the air like parachuting, while enjoying the beautiful sea view, without getting on an airplane or having the expertise as a professional parachutist. Parasailing is a recreational activity not a sport and is more often done in water than on land. By participating in a parasailing game, participants will be able to fly into the air. While flying, parasailing participants can enjoy the view from a different angle. To be able to fly, parasailing participants will use a parachute tied to a motorized boat, which is better known as a speedboat. When the speedboat is traveling at high speed, it will pull a parachute that allows parasailing participants to fly. The number of participants that can be flown in one parachute depends on the power of the speedboat engine, as well as the size of the parachute.

For those of you who want to enjoy a different sensation that is exciting and fun, try doing a parasailing adventure aka parasailing tandem bali in tanjung benoa! The main reasons are because the waves of tanjung benoa waters are very calm and the sea water depth is not more than 8 meters. And the location of the shoreline of tanjung benoa facing the east side. During the day, the wind direction is more likely to be west, so parasailing participants can start flying from the beach and land on the sand of tanjung benoa beach. Also, the price of a single parasailing game in tanjung benoa is very cheap. Because using the beach as a location, he started flying single parasailing and landed on the beach. This makes the single parasailing provider company in tanjung benoa not need a crane. Unlike the case with parasailing adventures which use very large cranes. Because parasailing adventures use large boats, and use cranes, making parasailing adventure prices more expensive compared to single parasailing prices.

Charlie Rose Tattoo Studio in Canggu Bali was opened on February 14th in 2018 by Kim and Yulia Angel, they were inspired by a love of quality tattooing and the birth of their daughter Charly-Rose Angel, so they decided to name the studio after her. Their studio was created entirely with their vision of ethics and humanity. They wanted to create something that brought people together. They didn’t want to be just another tattoo studio. They wanted to become a home that encapsulated their adage of LOVE + TRUTH + FAMILY.

They put a lot of time and effort into the design and the feel of the studio. The moment you arrive you realize it’s a real contrast from most tattoo studios with its white walls and light open space. Their studio is blessed every day with traditional Balinese Prayer ceremonies, and they think on the Island of the gods that that matters. They source the most creative artists they can find both locally and internationally. Most of their artists have between five and ten years experience as professional tattoo artists here and from their counties of origin. Tattoo artists are often nomadic by nature, and that works well for theirs, they have some amazingly talented travelling artists that love to come and work with theirs here in Bali, the island really does lend itself to creativity.

They use all imported inks and tattoo equipment, basically the best they can get, their hygienic standards are of western standard, and is of the highest concern to them. They believe in quality and ethical work, treating people with respect and helping their clients to have the best possible tattoo experience that they can have. From the moment you book the appointment, to the creation the of the design and the session with your artist, they want you to feel like an integral part of the whole experience, because they know its a memory that will literally stay with you forever.

A bit about yourself?

I’m a 33 years old Dutchie, however for the last 8 years I have lived abroad in Thailand and Australia. For work I operate an addiction helpline in the Netherlands.

What do you do in Bali?

I lead a pretty simple life: train, eat, work, sleep, repeat. On the weekends I go out and explore the Island and party a bit.

How long have you been training at wanderlust?

I have been training with Wanderlust since the start of August.

Why did you choose wanderlust?

It’s a massive gym with loads of people, so there are a lot of potential new friends/work out partners. Almost daily, I meet a new person. Also, I’ve never seen such an abs/m2 density which motivates me to work harder and eat cleaner.

What are your fitness goals?

The last 2 years I was in Australia where I didn’t work out and indulged myself with chicken parmi's and cheap Domino’s pizza (5 AUD/3€!!!), so my body is still recovering from that extensive carb loading period. It would be nice if at the end of the year I am able to do all workout’s RX and complete them within a decent time.

Also, I made a bet I could do a muscle up by the first of October, and if I can’t do it, I have to do 300 burpees.

Any fitness milestones you have achieved so far?

Yes, recently I finally was able to do a 100kg back squat, which is a number that I have been eyeballing for years, and I have been hitting PR’s on all my weightlifting. 3 Years ago I won a team Crossfit competition in Bangkok. It was the scaled division, but we still beat 26 other teams.

What makes you happy outside the gym?

Exploring and experiencing new things, connecting with people and food! I love food. Let’s just change my answer to food period.

Tips for beginners at CrossFit?

Don’t get frustrated when learning all the new movements. Keep putting in the work daily and you will be surprised how much you can learn in a year. And do not forget: Scaling is cool.

Your favourite lift or movement?

Nothing beats the feeling of a snatch completed with perfect form. I might be pushing it here but maybe not even morning sex…

Who or what inspires you?

Nobody really in particular, but I derive my inspiration from the people around me in the gym, in general. There are so many people walking around who have great technique and movement, are strong, have amazing discipline, or can do cool things with their body.

And actually coach Sam inspires me. I’m trying to become as strong as he is with weightlifting, and if he keeps up drinking those espresso martinis that won’t take too long ;) What challenges did you overcome last year?

Maybe trying to finish a dozen donuts in an evening?? I just traveled through Australia and had an amazing time. So besides fixing a flat tyre, broken alternator, broken starter motor and a blown head gasket. There weren't many physical or mental challenges done. (Personally I'm not really happy with this answer but it is the honest truth I think. I'll give it a bit more thought and maybe I forgot something). how is 2022 looking for you?

In the next 12 months I will probably stay in Bali and continue this fitness routine and keep finding challenges like the lapathon from last month. We had to walk/run around a football field for 24 hours in a team of 3. I love challenges like that. Those will be memories I won’t forget.

This market looks more like a fish market or an auction place for fish caught by fishermen, however, who would have thought that this place is also an attractive location for culinary dining. Here, you will find restaurants displaying various types of fish and other marine catches in glass aquariums. That way, you can make sure that any seafood they provide is not the result of preservation in the refrigerator.

You can find fish menus such as shiro, tuna, mahi-mahi, snapper, or tuna. The processing method also varies. And all of the fishes are fresh!

art lovers unite

In Bali, there are many painting galleries that are open to the public with complete collections. Like other art galleries, painting galleries in Bali also exhibit various beautiful and eye-catching works by local artists. In addition to various paintings, there is also a guide who can be asked to tell the creative process and other things related to the existing paintings. So cool isn't it?

Painting is a work of art that has a broad meaning with various streams and styles. Currently, there are about twenty different styles of painting used by artists. For example, the flow of surrealism, abstractionism, naturalism, romanticism, futurism and many others. Visit one of these painting galleries - or maybe even all of them to satisfy your beautiful paintings and art cravings: Museum Puri Lukisan in Ubud, Agung Rai Art Gallery in Peliatan, Nyaman Gallery in Seminyak, Reservoart in Seminyak, and Tonyraka Art Gallery in Ubud.

As part of the pain relief process, they explore various methods to help determine what kind of pain relief works best for each individual.

I find other people involved in this area of training very inspiring, having the common interest with a sport that I hadn’t heard much of but loved instantly made me just want to continue getting stronger. what challenges did you overcome last year?

I found myself falling out of love with training thinking more about how it made me look rather than what it allowed me to be capable of and stopped training often because of it.

Major regrets because there’s so much more to anything than that!

how is 2022 looking for you?

2022 so far has been leaving home, chasing the sun and soon moving onto Australia to work in late October and see where it takes me.

CROSSFIT

Is a program developed to offer a full body workout that combines elements of cardio, weightlifting, gymnastics, core training and more! Suitable to everyone as we scale load and intensity accordingly to each individual!

MOBILITY & MOVEMENT

MOVEMENT TRAINING

Our movement training is designed to provide a better understanding to natural movement mechanisms (the natural/established processes of our bodies), as well as increase body awareness through varying patterns of controlled dynamic play. Developing these skills have desirable outcomes, in creating ideal support systems for our daily lives (eliminating poor posture, rounded shoulders and tight hips etc), as well as developing fundamental core strength.

Whilst movement training is not designed to be physically demanding, the combination of creative activity and mental stimulus can be very rewarding for anyone, from burgeoning enthusiast to accomplished athlete. Programming blends elements of gymnastics, callisthenics, acrobatics, and balance/ coordination drills.

MOBILITY TRAINING

Our mobility training is a focus towards improving our current range of motion and end range capacity. This ensures safe transitions in all positions of our dynamic compound lifts and CrossFit demands. Constant training in these ends ranges establishes lasting strength benefits, as well as byproducts of injury migration, and rehabilitation stimulus to joints an muscle tissue, and developing enduring potential in otherwise neglected areas of our bodies.
