CHAPTER 01 INTRODUCTION DESIGN BRIEF THE CLIENT

DESIGN BRIEF The Design Studio for the whole semester is focused to designing medium rise or multi storey building of significant complexity for a corporate/commercial/ government entity on a chosen site. This will give the students the opportunity to exercise understanding from the M.Arch Urban Design Studies and applying it in the designing of the medium rise building. The design problems / issues at this stage are fairly complex building projects which will require completely integrated solutions in design and technical aspects. This is to encourage students to critically assess the architectural relevance and values of a project proposal within an urban setting. They are to resolve a design task that integrates various aspects of architectural concerns including client’s brief, contextual issues, structural rationality, services requirements, selection and applications. The proposals should exhibit competency in producing a scheme that resolves site layout, efficient and flexible planning of interior space, basement parking layout, interior spaces which are responsive to human needs and comfort, materiality, façade design, as well as the project contribution to the urban environment. Knowledge of prevailing planning and building by-laws is also important.

THE CLIENT IKEA is a private-held, international home products retailer that sells flat pack furniture, accessories, bathroom and kitchen items in their retail stores around the world. The company, which pioneeres flat-pack design furniture at affordable prices, is now the world’s largest furniture retailer. IKEA was founded in 1943 by a 17 years old Ingvar Kampard in Sweden and it is owned by a Dutchregistered foundation controlled by the Kampard family. The company that was originated in Smaland, Sweden, distributes it products through its retail outlets. BUILDING INTERGRATED SYSTEM

STRUCTURAL SYSTEM

One of the primary and predominant structural systems employed for tall steel and concrete buildings through the 1960s was the conventional rigid frame. The structural framework represents a vertical cantilever beam with a fixed base at the ground. Column sizes increase progressively toward the base of the building due to the accumulated increase in gravity loads transmitted from the floors above. Vertical steel shear trusses or concrete shear walls alone are effective in providing lateral resistance for buildings from 10 to 35 stories high. However, when shear walls or shear trusses are combined with rigid, moment-resisting frames, the interaction of the two lateral-force-resisting systems can produce greater lateral rigidity for the building and increase its capability to rise as high as 60 stories.
