ALIVE IN THE MISSION

WALLINGFORD FAMILY YMCA

AT THE Y... We are proud of our long and storied history, beginning with the creation of our mission in London, England back in 1844, and continued here in Wallingford, CT. Although the YMCA has evolved over time, constantly reinventing ourselves, we never fail to be anything less than exactly what our community needs. Every day, the Y is focused on strengthening communities for kids, adults, seniors and families with programs that protect, teach, connect, heal, nourish and encourage. But we can’t do it alone. Every gift you make stays right here in our community and is 100% Tax Deductible. Be a part of what’s right in Wallingford. Donate to the Y - for a better us.

FIT TO GO

In response to the growing youth health crisis, the Wallingford Family YMCA is proud to offer the Fit-to-Go program. In this program, elementary and middle school youth will learn about healthy living and nutrition, develop a focused and realistic workout program that they can stick with, have tons of fun doing healthy activities, make new friends and feel better about themselves. Parents are invited to join us for monthly healthy meals, where healthy lifestyle tips are offered by a health professional.

UPWARD BOUND Incorporating the Y philosophy of developing the spirit, mind, and body, youth are challenged to reach past their limitations with decision-making opportunities, recreational activities, and positive self-expression. Our hope is that these youth will grow and learn about themselves in a multitude of aspects in their lives. In understanding themselves more completely, they are better equipped when faced with daily challenges.

“My daughter appears on the outside to be a well-adjusted, happy-go-lucky tween... but she does have her fair share of struggles. She has social anxiety and has relatively low self-confidence. The Upward Bound program has instilled in her a sense of confidence that will prove beneficial as she continues in her educational and future professional careers. Without the coping skills and practice through engaging activities and group sessions I am confident she would be struggling in school and her extra circulars. Your staff has single handedly pulled my Daughter from her shell, guided her to healthy hobbies, and somehow managed to get her excited to be around her peers each and every session. Not only has Upward Bound program provided a skill set to a young woman, it has helped shape a functioning, productive member of society who looks forward to one day helping who she was, before she joined the Upward Bound family. Thanks for all that you do. Your efforts, time, and unwavering encouragement do not go unnoticed no matter how many times I have to pick her up and run.

JIM & BRENDA

“I have recently retired so my wife Brenda and I decided to join the Y as an activity we could do together. We have met so many nice likeminded people and the YMCA staff and volunteers are the best. Brenda has Multiple Sclerosis and attends Phyllis’s water aerobics class from 10:30 to 11:30 Tuesdays and Thursdays. I myself attend Jim Fulton’s 12:30 spin classes on those same days. In addition I attend Jim’s fitness/weight class every Wednesday. I cannot say enough about Jim and the benefits I gotten from his classes. In three short months the Y has become an important part of our daily life and we now schedule our weekly activities around those Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday workouts.”

CAMPING

like many Y programs, is about learning skills, developing character and making friends. But few environments are as special as camp, where kids become a community as they learn both how to be more independent and how to contribute to a group as they engage in physical, social and educational activities. Camping teaches self-reliance, a love for nature and the outdoors and the development of attitudes and practices that build character and leadership—all amidst the fun of color wars, theme weeks talent shows and meaningful relationships. Y counselors are dedicated to making sure camp is an amazing experience for every camper.

KATHY

“I am so grateful to have been a participant in the Livestrong Program. Before the program, I was weak, tired, and I didn’t have energy, due to receiving chemotherapy followed by surgery and radiation. Then, I heard about Livestrong and was able to get involved. The trainers and staff were awesome! They were always so supportive, encouraging and motivating. They made a difference. Now, I feel stronger, healthier and have more energy to do the things I enjoy. It has helped me physically and emotionally. I didn’t want the program to end. Thank you again for giving me my confidence back. I will definitely spread the word about Livestrong and the YMCA. Be blessed, smile on, and Thank you. By the way, EVERYONE I met at the YMCA was so helpful and friendly.”
