welcome

Wales Dance Platform 2014 is a season of work from independent dance-artists, offering a collection of recently created performance, film and photography in three theatres across Cardiff. The Platform aims to raise the profile and reputation of contemporary dance from Wales and encourage critical debate about the artform and its creative artists. To contextualise the programme, everything is presented either as ‘try-out’ or ‘finished’ and we hope you enjoy the Platform and join the discussions and debates with friends and colleagues as the weekend reveals its scope and achievements.

Mae Llwyfan Dawns Cymru 2014 yn dymor o waith gan artistiaid dawns annibynnol sy’n cynnig casgliad o berfformiadau, ffilmiau a ffotograffiaeth a grëwyd yn ddiweddar mewn tair theatr yng Nghaerdydd. Nod y Llwyfan yw codi proffil ac enw dawns gyfoes o Gymru ac annog trafodaeth feirniadol ar y gelfyddyd a’i hartistiaid creadigol. Er mwyn rhoi cyd-destun i’r rhaglen, cyflwynir popeth naill ai fel gwaith ‘treialu’ neu fel gwaith ‘terfynol’ a gobeithiwn y gwnewch fwynhau’r Llwyfan ac ymuno â’r trafodaethau â ffrindiau a chydweithwyr wrth i’r penwythnos ddangos ei gwmpas a’i gyflawniadau.

Deborah Keyser Director / Cyfarwyddwr, Creu Cymru Development agency for theatres and arts centres in Wales Asiantaeth ddatblygu ar gyfer theatrau a chanolfannau celfyddydau yng Nghymru deborah@creucymru.com —

@CreuCymru — www.creucymru.com

Mae’n bleser gan Creu Cymru i gynhyrchu’r ail Lwyfan Dawns Cymru. Mae’n ffurfio rhan allweddol o’n strategaeth Consortiwm Dawns Cymru i ddatblygu cynhyrchu a chyflwyno dawns ar hyd a lled y genedl, yn arbennig trwy’r cynllun arloesol Cyfaill Dawns sy’n paru artistiaid dawns a lleoliadau – mae sawl Cyfaill Dawns yn cyflwyno gwaith dros y penwythnos. Ar sail y Llwyfan cyntaf yn 2011, bydd gan goreograffwyr wledd i’w mwynhau: rydw i’n gyffro i gyd am y tri diwrnod o berfformiadau a chyflwyniadau byw a hael gan lu o ymarferwyr sy’n berthnasol i Gymru ac edrychaf ymlaen at gwrdd ag artistiaid dawns a chynulleidfaoedd fel ei gilydd.

Creu Cymru is delighted to produce the second Wales Dance Platform. It forms a key part of our Wales Dance Consortium strategy to develop the production and presentation of dance across the nation, particularly through the innovative Dance Buddy scheme, which pairs up dance artists and venues – several Dance Buddies are presenting work over the weekend. If the first Platform in 2011 is anything to go by, the choreographers will have a feast on the table for us to enjoy: I’m excited about three days of vibrant, generous performance and presentation from a host of Wales-relevant practitioners, and look forward to meeting danceartists and audiences alike.

Ann Sholem & Roy Campbell-Moore Creative Producers / Cynhyrchwyr Creadigol During a forty-year career in ballet and contemporary dance at national and international levels, we have always been passionate supporters of choreographers and dancers. As founders and Creative Producers of the Wales Dance Platform we have created an annual award for an independent choreographer whose work combines innovation and inspiration with eye-catching appeal to critics and public alike.

Yn ystod gyrfa o dros ddeugain mlynedd mewn bale a dawns gyfoes ar lefelau cenedlaethol a rhyngwladol, rydym wedi cefnogi coreograffwyr a dawnswyr yn frwd erioed. Fel sylfaenwyr a Chynhyrchwyr Creadigol Llwyfan Dawns Cymru, rydym wedi creu gwobr flynyddol ar gyfer coreograffydd annibynnol y mae ei waith yn cyfuno arloesi ac ysbrydoliaeth â gwledd i lygaid y beirniaid a’r cyhoedd fel ei gilydd.

The award reflects the adventurous, creative spirit of the Platform, where dance-artists show their hard-won recent work in the spirit of sharing openly and generously. We hope the award will also provoke and stimulate debate throughout the weekend about the artists, their work and their ideas.

Mae’r wobr yn adlewyrchu ysbryd anturus a chreadigol y Llwyfan, lle mae artistiaid dawns yn dangos eu gwaith caled buddugol diweddar mewn naws o rannu agored a hael. Gobeithiwn y bydd y wobr yn ysgogi ac yn symbylu trafodaeth dros y penwythnos am yr artistiaid, eu gwaith a’u syniadau.

#WhatCaughtYourEye

Anfonwch negeseuon trydar trwy ddefnyddio’r hashtag hwn dros y penwythnos er mwyn dweud yr hyn sy’n dal eich llygad yn y perfformiadau, yr arddangosfeydd a ffilmiau a byddwn yn arddangos eich negeseuon trydar byw ac yn eu defnyddio i ddewis pwy sy’n cael y wobr o £1,000.

Please tweet using this hashtag during the weekend to say what catches your eye from the performances, exhibitions and films and we will display your live tweets and also use them to help choose who receives the £1,000 award.

Being part of Wales Dance Platform 2014 reflects our renewed ambition to support emerging Welsh and Wales-based talent. It is great for us to be hosting the installation Watching, as it showcases the work of our Dance Buddy, Jo Fong (alongside audio-visual artist Heloise Godfrey-Talbot).

Mae bod yn rhan o Lwyfan Dawns Cymru 2014 yn adlewyrchu ein huchelgais newydd i gefnogi dawn ddatblygol o Gymru ac yng Nghymru. Mae’n wych i ni ein bod yn cynnal y gosodiad Watching gan ei fod yn dangos gwaith ein Cyfaill Dawns Jo Fong (wrth ochr ry artist clyweledol Heloise Godfrey-Talbot).

We are also particularly pleased to present the programme for families and young people, as we value the opportunity to introduce dance to younger audiences, with recent successes including Nobulus’s Out of the Shadow and Blanca Li’s Elektro Kif and the forthcoming Boy Blue Entertainment’s The Five & the Prophecy of Prana.

Contemporary dance forms a huge part of our programme, as support for the new and the emerging is in the DNA of Chapter. We are the home of Coreo Cymru and we work with a host of talented and inspiring dance-artists. A key artist we support is Sioned Huws, who will present Aomori Aomori on 31 July & 1 August with a company of dancers and musicians from UK, Europe and Japan. The production is part of Aomori Project, an ongoing international performance project since 2008, and has toured to over twenty international venues and festivals in Europe, Japan and Singapore. Mae dawns gyfoes yn ffurfio rhan enfawr o’n rhaglen, gan fod cefnogi pethau newydd a datblygol yn rhan o DNA Chapter. Ni yw cartref Coreo Cymru ac rydym yn gweithio gyda llu o artistiaid dawns ifanc dawnus a symbylol. Un o’n hartistiaid allweddol y cefnogwn yw Sioned Huws, a fydd yn cyflwyno Aomori Aomori ar 31 Gorffennaf a 1 Awst gyda chwmni o ddawnswyr a cherddorion o’r DU, Ewrop a Siapan. Mae’r cynhyrchiad yn rhan o Brosiect Aomori, sy’n brosiect perfformio rhyngwladol parhaus ers 2008, sydd wedi teithio i dros ugain o leoliadau a gwyliau rhyngwladol yn Ewrop, Siapan a Singapore.

Coreo Cymru is delighted to be supporting Wales Dance Platform 2014 as we head towards hosting British Dance Edition (BDE) in March 2016. BDE is a major event in the global dance calendar showcasing the best of British dance to UK and international promoters. The opportunity to host this event for the first time in Wales is testament to our growing and vibrant dance sector and will provide many of our artists with much needed international exposure. Coreo Cymru’s big ambition is to be well connected and ready for such opportunities as they arise, by nurturing home grown talent and also encouraging collaboration with other countries.

Mae’n bleser gan Coreo Cymru gefnogi Llwyfan Dawns Cymru 2014 wrth i ni agosáu at gynnal y British Dance Edition fis Mawrth 2016. Mae hwn yn ddigwyddiad mawr yng nghalendr dawns y byd gan ddangos y gorau o ddawns Prydain i hyrwyddwyr y DU a rhyngwladol. Mae’r cyfle i gynnal y digwyddiad hwn am y tro cyntaf yng Nghymru’n dysteb i’n sector dawns cynyddol a byw ac fe fydd yn rhoi’r sylw rhyngwladol y mae ei angen ar nifer o’n hartistiaid.

I hope Wales Dance Platform will be the beginning of the creation of new works we will share with the international dance world at British Dance Edition Cardiff, March 2016.

Uchelgais mawr Coreo Cymru yw bod yn gysylltiedig ac yn barod am gyfleoedd o’r fath wrth iddynt godi trwy feithrin dawn gartref ac annog cydweithredu â gwledydd eraill.

coreo cymru

Gobeithiaf mai Llwyfan Dawns Cymru fydd yr egin i greu gwaith newydd y byddwn yn eu rhannu â’r byd dawns rhyngwladol yn y British Dance Edition Caerdydd, mis Mawrth 2016.

James Williams

Friday 27 / DYDD GWENER 27, all day / TRWY’R DYDD First Floor Gallery, Wales Millennium Centre / Galeri Llawr Cyntaf Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru

ARTIST: I started photography during my training at LABAN, first exploring dancers and then branching out into other fields of the art. I am a firm believer that images should not be taken but created and each personal project I undertake is a further exploration of this belief. THE WORK: I play with how bodies working together can be seamlessly entangled to create unique human structures. The idea that we are all essentially the same regardless of race or modern superficiality. The black and white images help to create the sense of similarity. Each dancer is a different gradient of the same human tone tangled together like a birds nest.

ARTIST: Dechreuais ffotograffiaeth wrth hyfforddi yn LABAN, yn gyntaf roeddwn i’n archwilio dawnswyr ac wedyn ehangais i feysydd eraill o gelfyddyd. Rydw i’n credu’n gryf na ddylid cymryd lluniau ond yn hytrach eu creu ac mae pob prosiect personol rydw i’n ei wneud yn ymestyn yr ymchwiliad i’r gred hon.

Finished work / GWAITH TERFYNOL Dancers/models / Dawnswyr/modelau: Caitlin Fretwell-Walsh, Joshua Smith, Mathew Sandiford, Chiara Favaretti, Stella Papi, Doug Edwards Set, costume and lighting / Set, gwisgoedd a goleuadau: James Williams Contact / CYSYLLTWCH movingproductions@hotmail.co.uk facebook.com/movingproductions.dancecompany

Y Gwaith: Rydw i’n chwarae gyda sut y gall cyrff sy’n cydweithio fod yn gwlwm di-dor i greu strwythurau corfforol unigryw. Y syniad yw ein bod i gyd yr un peth i bob pwrpas er gwaethaf hil neu arwynebolrwydd cyfoes. Mae’r delweddau du a gwyn yn helpu i greu ymdeimlad o debygrwydd. Mae pob dawnsiwr yn radd wahanol o’r un arlliw dynol i gyd wedi’u plethu megis nyth adar.

ARTIST: I am a dance artist based in North Wales and enjoy creating and performing dance with and for all ages and abilities in all types of settings. I also work with dance on film with Rob Spaull and in vertical/ aerial dance with Kate Lawrence and Everybody Dance. THE WORK: Time for Tea – A fun and lively action-packed Tea Party where Alice and Hatter play out various rituals in preparation for their tea, but something is missing! This is a mini version from a new show in development with Little Light Dance and Digital Theatre CIC and Venue Cymru.

ARTIST: Rydw i’n artist dawns wedi fy lleoli yng ngogledd Cymru ac yn mwynhau creu a pherfformio dawns gyda ac ar gyfer pob oedran a gallu ymhob math o leoliad. Rydw i hefyd yn gweithio gyda dawns ar ffilm gyda Rob Spaull ac mewn dawns fertigol/awyr gyda Katie Lawrence ac Everybody Dance. Y Gwaith: Time for Tea – Parti Te llawn hwyl a gweithgareddau bywiog lle mae Alice a’r Hatter yn cyfleu amryw ddefodau wrth baratoi te, ond mae rhywbeth ar goll! ARTIST: I am an independent dance artist working with improvisational movement practices and spoken word. I am influenced by the psychological and psychosocial aspects related to dance and dancing. I work within performance, education, mental health and community arts in the UK.

ARTIST: Rydw i’n artist dawns annibynnol sy’n gweithio gydag arferion symud byrfyfyr a’r gair llafar. Daw fy nylanwadau o agweddau seicolegol a seicogymdeithasol ar ddawns a dawnsio. Rydw i’n gweithio ym maes perfformio, addysg, iechyd meddwl a chelfyddydau’r gymuned yn y DU.

THE WORK: This piece is about the appearance and disappearance of meaning. How it arrives, and how it evaporates in our minds. We often try so hard to make sense of things, to understand, and to be understood through our communication with each other.

Lucy May Constantini

Friday 27 / DYDD GWENER 27, 18.15 Weston Studio, Wales Millennium Centre / Stiwdio Weston Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru

ARTIST: I am influenced by over two decades of yoga practice and my study of martial arts, namely Kalarippayattu from India, and the Japanese martial art Aikido. These support my investigations into the states we create in both dancers and watchers.

ARTIST: Daw fy ysbrydoliaeth o dros ddau ddegawd o ymarfer yoga ac astudio crefftau ymladd, yn benodol, Kalarippayattu o’r India a’r grefft Aikido o Siapan. Mae’r rhain yn cefnogi fy ymchwiliadau i’r cyflyrau rydym yn eu creu mewn dawnswyr a gwylwyr.

THE WORK: The solo draws on elements of Kalarippayattu and interweaves them with words gridded in space and on the body. I’ve played with the idea of bodily rather than verbal mantra recitation, creating complex structures and interweavings, inspired by Sanskrit patterns.

Y Gwaith: Mae’r unawd yn tynnu ar elfennau o Kalarippayattu ac yn plethu’r rhain â geiriau wedi’u hysgrifennu ar y corff. Rydw i wedi chwarae gyda’r syniad o adrodd mantra gyda’r corff yn hytrach nag ar lafar, gan greu strwythurau a phlethiadau cymhleth wedi’u hysbrydoli gan batrymau Sanskrit.

Sarah Rogers

Friday 27 / DYDD GWENER 27, 18.15 Weston Studio, Wales Millennium Centre / Stiwdio Weston Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru

ARTIST: As a creator and performer, I am moving from working solely with abstract movement, to integrating narrative line, characterisation and use of set, achieving this by collaborating with theatre artists, musicians, film artists and dancers; forming the collective ‘Ransack Dance’.

ARTIST: Fel crëwr a pherfformiwr, rydw i’n symud o weithio’n unigol gyda symudiadau haniaethol i integreiddio naratif, cymeriadaeth a defnydd set, ac yn cyflawni hyn trwy gydweithio ag artistiaid theatr, cerddorion, artistiaid ffilm a dawnswyr; gan ffurfio’r cyfansoddiad ‘Ransack Dance’.

THE WORK: The theme of diary entries exposes the female character’s inner thoughts and identities, revealing that everything is not as it seems. Audience witness a seemingly normal relationship unravel through unique manipulations between performers and their environment, exposing a darker narrative.

Y Gwaith: Mae’r thema detholiadau o ddyddiadur yn datgelu meddyliau a hunaniaeth fewnol y ferch, gan ddatgelu nad yw popeth fel yr ymddengys. Mae cynulleidfaoedd yn dyst i berthynas sydd i’w gweld yn normal yn datod trwy drafodaethau unigryw y perfformwyr â’u hamgylchedd, gan ddatgelu naratif mwy tywyll.

ARTIST: This is a collaboration between Sally Varrall, senior lecturer in Dance at Cardiff Metropolitan University, and Eleanor Brown, emerging independent dance artist. Our work is informed by the following values: Presence, Sensing, Discovery, Dialogue, Simplicity, and Relationship.

ARTIST: Dyma gydweithrediad rhwng Sally Varrall, uwch ddarlithydd Dawns ym Mhrifysgol Fetropolitan Caerdydd, ac Eleanor Brown, artist dawns annibynnol datblygol. Mae ein gwaith wedi’i seilio ar y gwerthoedd canlynol: Presenoldeb, Synhwyro, Darganfod, Dialog, Symlrwydd a Pherthynas.

THE WORK: Me Dancing asks ‘who am I?’, capturing the movement belonging and inherent to each individual. As the work progresses we witness the dance evolve from moments of movement, accompanied by live performance that draws on simplicity, stillness and space.

Y Gwaith: Mae Me Dancing yn gofyn ‘pwy ydw i?’ gan gipio’r symud sy’n gynhenid ymhob unigolyn. Wrth i’r gwaith ddatblygu rydym yn gweld y ddawns yn esblygu o enydau o symud, gyda pherfformiad byw sy’n tynnu ar symlrwydd, llonyddwch a gofod.

Y Gwaith: Mae Sometimes We Look yn cyfuno dawns, darlunio ac animeiddio. Mae’n berfformiad sy’n archwilio sut y gall darlunio a gwneud marciau syml effeithio ar sut y gellir creu symudiadau. Gellir ei berfformio mewn galerïau ac mewn theatrau.

Friday 27 / DYDD GWENER 27, 20.00 Weston Studio, Wales Millennium Centre / Stiwdio Weston Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru

ARTIST: As an independent dance artist, I am fascinated with the body. I consider that the bodies we inhabit offer boundaries and structural constraints as well as being sites for the re-presentation of identities.

ARTIST: Fel artist dawns annibynnol, rydw i’n ymddiddori yn y corff. Rydw i’n ystyried bod ein cyrff yn cynnig ffiniau a chyfyngiadau strwythurol yn ogystal â bod yn safleoedd i gynrychioli ein hunaniaeth.

THE WORK: It is a place, space of remembering. Recollecting and gathering trauma through movement and materials and then ultimately mastering it. Healing the cracks and fragments. Blurring the boundaries of cleanliness to become clean.

Y Gwaith: Mae’n lle, yn ofod i gofio. Cofio a chasglu cyfyngder trwy symudiadau a deunyddiau ac yn ei feistroli yn y pen draw. Gwella’r toriadau a’r darnau. Gwyro ffiniau glendid i ddod yn lân.

SATURDAY 28 / DYDD SADWRN 28, all day / TRWY’R DYDD Chapter bar area / Ardal bar y Chapter

ARTIST: My performances are a hybrid that arises out of my training in and love of live art, dance and theatre. Studying drama at Exeter University and then a Masters in Fine Arts at the University of Wales (Cardiff) gave me tools to play with use of space, image, and physicality. THE WORK: These films were the result of the two weeks of experimentation during Welsh Independent Dance’s “Dance Bytes for Camera” in 2003 where I was one of four choreographers selected to work with four video directors. I teamed up with Matthew J Humphreys whose interest in low tech, Super 8 and “amateur aesthetic” combined with my fascination between trained and non-trained movement.

ARTIST: Mae fy mherfformiadau’n hybrid sy’n deillio o fy hyfforddiant mewn celf fyw, dawns a theatr a fy nghariad tuag ato. Astudiais ddrama ym Mhrifysgol Exeter wedyn gwnes i radd Feistr yn y Celfyddydau Cain ym Mhrifysgol Cymru (Caerdydd). Rhoddodd hyn yr arfau i mi chwarae gyda defnydd gofod, delwedd a’r corff. Y Gwaith: Daeth y ffilmiau hyn o ganlyniad i bythefnos o arbrofi yn ystod “Dance Bytes for Camera” Dawns Annibynnol Cymru yn 2003 pan oeddwn yn un o bedwar coreograffydd a ddewiswyd i weithio gyda phedwar cyfarwyddwr fideo. Gweithiais gyda Matthew J Humphreys a chyfunwyd ei ddiddordeb mewn technoleg isel, Super 8 ac ‘estheteg amatur’ a fy niddordeb rhwng symud hyfforddedig a heb hyfforddiant.

ARTIST: As a former dancer, I am entranced by dancers expressing the essentials of narrative and poetry. Like driving a Grand Prix racing car, my work tries to capture that hot rush of endless imagery as I work close to the dancers, transgressing into their working space yet remaining invisible to them. THE WORK: The Beauty and The Grit in India is part of a long-term project and was shot in a variety of performance and environmental spaces in India, working with local dance companies during February 2014. A selection of these images will be shown as gallery and print exhibitions in Bangalore and Delhi in September 2014.

ARTIST: Fel dawnsiwr cynt, rydw i’n cael fy swyno gan ddawnswyr yn mynegi hanfodion naratif a barddoniaeth. Megis gyrru car Grand Prix, mae fy ngwaith yn ceisio cipio’r awch cynnes o ddelweddaeth ddi-baid wrth weithio’n agos gyda’r dawnswyr, gan gamu i’w gofod gwaith ond yn anweladwy iddynt. Y Gwaith: Mae The Beauty and the Grit in India yn rhan o brosiect hirdymor ac fe’i saethwyd mewn amryw leoliadau perfformio ac amgylcheddol, gan weithio gyda chwmnïau dawns lleol fis Chwefror 2014. ARTIST: Originally a dancer and musician from Guinea I founded Ballet Nimba, a Wales based African Dance Theatre company. I won an ADAD Trailblazer fellowship and used the bursary to travel back to Guinea to record the urban and village dance practices.

ARTIST: Yn wreiddiol yn ddawnsiwr a cherddor o Guinea, sylfaenais Ballet Nimba, cwmni Theatr Dawns Affricanaidd yng Nghymru. Enillais gymrodoriaeth Tailblazer ADAD a defnyddiais y bwrsari i deithio’n ôl i Guinea er mwyn recordio’r arferion dawns trefol ac yn y pentrefi.

THE WORK: If Wales is known as the Land of Song, then Guinea must be the Land of Dance! Dancing is part of our identity. This is a first attempt to document some of these dance practices and pose the question on what is “traditional” African-dance.

Y Gwaith: Os Cymru yw Gwlad y Gân, mae’n rhaid mai Guinea yw Gwlad y Ddawns! Mae dawnsio’n rhan o’n hunaniaeth. Dyma ymgais gyntaf i gofnodi rhai o’r arferion dawns hyn a gofyn y cwestiwn beth yw dawns Affricanaidd ‘draddodiadol’.

ARTIST: I live in Cardiff, where I am a Physical Theatre Performer and Film Maker, working on Theatre, Film, Installation and Site-specific projects. My films draw inspiration from sites, characters, and the reconstruction of improvisations through the editing process. THE WORK: Paper State is a short film which explores the ritualistic behaviour of someone alone and waiting, inspired by the peaceful protest of someone being uprooted from their home. The performer explores the character’s emotions, whilst masked, without sight, surrounded by old newspapers.

ARTIST: Rydw i’n byw yng Nghaerdydd lle rydw i’n Berfformiwr Theatr Gorfforol ac yn Ffilmiwr, gan weithio ar brosiectau Theatr, Ffilm, Gosodiadau a phrosiectau safle-benodol. Daw ysbrydoliaeth fy ffilmiau o safleoedd, cymeriadau ac atgynhyrchu gwaith byrfyfyr trwy’r broses olygu. Y Gwaith: Mae Paper State yn ffilm fer sy’n archwilio ymddygiad defodol rhywun unig sy’n aros, ysbrydolir y gwaith hwn gan brotest tawel rhywun sy’n cael ei orfodi o’i gartref. ARTIST: I am a graduate of the National Ballet School in Belgrade, and started teaching at 16. My choreography releases the authentic body through creative movement. I am currently choreographer for Theatr Ffynnon and manage international projects for ‘The Republic of the Imagination’.

ARTIST: Graddiais o’r Ysgol Fale Genedlaethol yn Belgrade a dechreuais addysgu’n 16 oed. Mae fy nghoreograffi’n rhyddhau’r corff real trwy symud creadigol. Rydw i ar hyn o bryd yn goreograffydd Theatr Ffynnon ac yn rheoli prosiectau rhyngwladol ‘The Republic of the Imagination’.

Finished work / CYSYLLTWCH

THE WORK: Gravida is the dance of the two gravities performed as a part of the Women in Pregnancy project that explores the impact of pregnancy on women’s creativity. The project proposes that the ‘body gravida’ is of high aesthetic value and not something to hide from view. Pregnancy is a state in which women should not be inhibited from creativity, expression and public performance.

Y Gwaith: Gravida yw dawns dau ddisgyrchiant a gaiff ei berfformio’n rhan o’r prosiect ‘Women in Pregnancy’ sy’n archwilio effaith beichiogrwydd ar greadigrwydd menywod. Mae’r prosiect yn cynnig bod gwerth esthetig uchel i ‘gravida’r corff’ ac nid yw’n rhywbeth i’w guddio. Mae beichiogrwydd yn gyflwr lle na ddylai menywod gael eu hatal rhag bod yn greadigol, mynegi a pherfformio’n gyhoeddus.

ARTIST: Artistic Director of Striking Attitudes, a Cardiff based company dedicated to creating work for the older dancer. As a freelance choreographer of many years’ experience my work is always motivated by the big themes of Life, and particularly involves searching for a purity of expression to highlight the power of the older performer. THE WORK: 54 dancers aged 48 to 92 perform in a film set in the landscape of Wales that tells of the paths we choose as we journey through life. SATURDAY 28 / DYDD SADWRN 28, 16.30 Chapter Theatre / Theatr Chapter

ARTIST: My choreographic interest stems from a career in parkour, challenging the performers’ movement capacity, both physical and psychological, to produce beautiful, organic phrasing as well as drawing elements of risk to each performance. THE WORK: Crash is a development of the company’s earlier duet Terror Nation, a stripped back refined exploration of my use of props, using only a household chair as stimulus for the fluid, athletic and seamless transitions that shape the work. The work looks deeper at interaction and behaviour with a focus on our sense of touch and its importance to our survival.

ARTIST: Mae fy niddordeb mewn coreograffi yn deillio o yrfa mewn ‘parkour’, gan herio gallu symud y perfformwyr yn gorfforol ac yn seicolegol i gynhyrchu cymalau cain, organig yn ogystal â chynnwys elfennau o risg ymhob perfformiad. Y Gwaith: Mae Crash yn ddatblygiad o ddeuawd cynharach y cwmni Terror Nation, sy’n archwiliad wedi’i symleiddio a’i fireinio o fy nefnydd o bropiau, gan ddefnyddio cadair tŷ yn unig fel ysgogiad ar gyfer y symudiadau llyfn, athletaidd a hyblyg sy’n ffurfio’r gwaith. Giving Space and Time to Just Being

SATURDAY 28 / DYDD SADWRN 28, 18.00 Stiwdio

ARTIST: This work honours a longterm friendship between three movement improvisers who also share living in West Wales and who are also mothers. My work continues to hover between the forms of visual art and dance. Here I begin to return to painting and performance for gallery-style witnessing. THE WORK: Performed through improvisational scores with psychophysical motivation. Momentary stories or transient personal histories are played out and new or forgotten perspectives on sharing space are presented. It is indirectly questioning society’s need for selfcontrol and our lost or undervalued ability to sense. This work makes portraits of the female and explores womanhood; our very being is articulated.

ARTIST: Mae’r gwaith hwn yn deyrnged i gyfeillgarwch hirhoedlog rhwng tri threfnydd byrfyfyr ym maes symud sydd hefyd yn rhannu bywyd yng ngorllewin Cymru ac yn famau. Mae fy ngwaith yn parhau i hofran rhwng ffurfiau celfyddyd weledol a dawns. Yma rydw i’n dechrau dychwelyd i beintio a pherfformio er mwyn ei weld mewn galeri.

Directed and conceived by / Cyfarwyddwyd a chysyniad gan: Jessica Lerner

Y Gwaith: Wedi’i berfformio trwy sgoriau byrfyfyr gyda symbyliad seicogorfforol. Cyflëir storïau enydol neu hanesion personol darfodedig a chyflwynir persbectif newydd neu angof ar rannu gofod. Mae’n cwestiynu’n anuniongyrchol angen y gymdeithas am hunanreolaeth a’n gallu i synhwyro sydd wedi’i golli neu ei danbrisio. g SATURDAY 28 / DYDD SADWRN 28, 18.00 Stiwdio

ARTIST: I am currently playing with the medium of film exploring how live and film work can create a captivating experience. I am particularly interested in how a single image can spark the imagination. THE WORK: Within this work you are invited to come and watch as If you would the sea, not seeking a narrative but allowing the experience to wash over you. I hope to allow time to become absorbed in the details allowing the imagination to wonder.

ARTIST: Rydw i ar hyn o bryd yn chwarae gyda chyfrwng ffilm, gan archwilio sut y gall gwaith byw a ffilm greu profiad cofiadwy. Mae diddordeb arbennig gen i mewn sut y gall un ddelwedd gipio’r dychymyg. SATURDAY 28 / DYDD SADWRN 28, 20.00 Chapter Theatre

ARTIST: We live and work in South Wales, where we have been making performance, live art and dance theatre since 2002. Often our work has a playful and interactive element inspired by happenings and live art; works that bring art forms and people together. We have a DIY approach to exploring and developing ideas.

ARTIST: Rydym yn byw ac yn gweithio yn ne Cymru, lle rydym wedi creu theatr perfformio, celf fyw a dawns ers 2002. Ceir elfen chwareus a rhyngweithiol yn aml yn ein gwaith wedi’i hysbrydoli gan ddigwyddiadau a chelfyddyd fyw o works sy’n tynnu ffurfiau celfyddyd a phobl at ei gilydd. Mae gennym ein dull ein hunain o archwilio a datblygu syniadau.

THE WORK: We are collaborating with Newport artists Bosch to produce a series of performance experiments that aim to explore the destruction of art. Using music, film and performance the collective exploration focuses on destruction in order to understand why we create anything in the first place. This showing will be a brief presentation of the inspiration behind the project.

Y Gwaith: Rydym yn cydweithredu ag artistiaid Bosch Casnewydd i gynhyrchu cyfres o arbrofion perfformio gyda’r nod o archwilio dinistr celfyddyd. Gan ddefnyddio cerddoriaeth, ffilm a pherfformiad mae’r archwiliad ar y cyd yn canolbwyntio ar ddinistr er mwyn deall pam rydym yn creu unrhyw beth yn y lle cyntaf. Bydd y dangosiad hwn yn gyflwyniad byr o’r ysbrydoliaeth sy’n gefn i’r prosiect.

Visual artists John Collingswood and Leah Crossley offer images that propose alternative perspectives on performance.

SUNDAY 29 / DYDD SUL 29, 16.00 Sherman, Theatre / Theatr 1

ARTIST: My recent work explores a unique movement language based on the fusion of contemporary dance with breakdance and parkour. Previous work toured extensively across UK, Germany, France, Austria, Slovenia, Luxembourg, and Canada. My dance short film ‘The Sublime’ recently won an Award For Innovation in the US.

ARTIST: Mae fy ngwaith diweddar yn archwilio iaith symud unigryw wedi’i seilio ar asio dawns gyfoes â breg-ddawns a ‘parkour’. Teithiodd gwaith blaenorol yn helaeth ar draws y DU, yr Almaen, Ffrainc, Awstria, Slofenia, Lwcsembwrg a Chanada. Enillodd fy ffilm fer ddawns ‘The Sublime’ Wobr Arloesedd yn UDA yn ddiweddar.

Choreographer / Coreograffydd: Sandra Harnisch-Lacey

THE WORK: Harnisch-Lacey Dance Theatre’s new show is based on Wales’ recent journey to reclaim its cultural identity. This short extract explores themes of identity, freedom and the power of transformation. Combining contemporary dance, breakdance and parkour, a story unfolds where the 1930s arson attack at Penyberth ignites our future.

Y Gwaith: Mae sioe newydd Harnisch-Lacey Dance Theatre wedi’i seilio ar daith ddiweddar Cymru i adennill ei hunaniaeth ddiwylliannol. Mae’r detholiad byr hwn yn archwilio themâu hunaniaeth, rhyddid a grym trawsffurfio. Gan gyfuno dawns gyfoes, breg-ddawns a ‘parkour’, mae stori’n datblygu lle mae’r ymosodiad llosgi bwriadol ym Mhenyberth yn y 1930au yn tanio ein dyfodol.

SUNDAY 29 / DYDD SUL 29, 16.00 Sherman, Theatre / Theatr 1

ARTIST: My work has a strong narrative and theatrical focus where I take inspiration from other art forms, in particular literature. Collaboration is at the heart of my practice, working with the dancers, composers and designers on creating worlds on stage.

ARTIST: Mae naratif cryf a ffocws theatraidd i fy ngwaith wrth i mi gael fy ysbrydoli gan ffurfiau celfyddyd eraill, yn arbennig llenyddiaeth. Mae cydweithredu wrth galon fy arfer, gan weithio gyda dawnswyr, cyfansoddwyr a dylunwyr i greu bydoedd ar y llwyfan.

Choreographer / Coreograffydd: Gwyn Emberton

THE WORK: The Devil in Eden is a duet from My People, based on Caradoc Evans’s controversial book. Dinah, the daughter of Ianto, is tempted by the tramp Michael. When she discovers he is St Michael, the devil, she sends him to purgatory.

y Gwaith: Mae The Devil in Eden yn ddeuawd o My People, wedi’i seilio ar lyfr dadleuol Caradoc Evans. Mae Dinah, merch Ianto, yn cael ei themtio gan grwydryn o’r enw Michael. Pan sylweddolai mai Sant Michael y diafol ydyw, mae’n ei anfon i burdan.
