The WakaWaka Foundation
Who are we? The WakaWaka Foundation is an internationally operating NGO based in the Netherlands. We devise strategies and programs to fight energy poverty all over the world. Our mission is to provide people living at the bottom of the pyramid with safe, sustainable and self-sufficient energy and light solutions as well as providing necessary life skills and support. Energy Poverty There are 1.3 billion people living off-grid. These people do not have access to the conventional energy grid and are dependent on toxic, dangerous and dirty kerosene lamps for lighting. Kerosene lamps result in 300 000 deaths per year and millions of mutilations from lamp-related burns. The effects on the lungs from an indoor kerosene lamp equals smoking two packs of cigarettes per day and the use of kerosene costs an average of 20% of a daily family income. The lack of access to light is detrimental to safety, school results, economic activity and community life. WakaWaka The WakaWaka solar solutions are a potent weapon in combating these problems. The WakaWaka Light is the world’s smartest and most efficient solar led light. The WakaWaka Power also offers a USB-charging point for mobile phones. Both have a unique design adapted to the needs and aspirations of families at the bottom of the pyramid.
Lighting up Haiti
The WakaWaka Foundation donated 12 000 WakaWaka Lights to Haitians who are still suffering from the effects of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Three years after the earthquake, 370 000 Haitians are still living in complete darkness at night, making it impossible to escape energy poverty. The WakaWaka Lights were funded by the WakaWaka Power crowd-funding campaign from our partnering social enterprise: Off-Grid Solutions.
Solar for Syria
The crisis in Syria worsens every day. Millions of refugees have fled from their homes in Syria resulting in a major humanitarian disaster. We are contributing tens of thousands of WakaWaka Powers to these Syrian refugees together with other NGOs. With these WakaWaka Powers, families do not need to live in fear of tent camp fires and are able to charge their phones safely. This enables them to communicate with their scattered family members during the turmoil of civil war.
Waka Waka benefits
Living without sustainable sources of light and power has major effects on health, the environment, school results, economic activity and safety of families. Replacing kerosene lamps with clean, safe solarpowered lighting presents opportunities in multiple areas, from cuts in global carbon emissions, health risks from indoor air pollution, to the generation of more employment. Using sustainable off-grid lighting can bring about major financial savings in a short time, as well as additional educational, health and environmental benefits.
Education • According to The World Bank, the switch from kerosene to LED-light increases children’s pass rates and grade percentage significantly. Pass grades improve from 50% to a staggering 100% and grade percentages improve on average by 20%. • Children who have access to a WakaWaka are enabled to do their homework and go to school in the evening. This improves comprehension and retention of academic skills through increased ability to study and read at home. . Economic development • WakaWakas save families enormous amounts of money, as the use of kerosene costs an average off-grid family 25-30% of their income. • A WakaWaka provides more hours of light; resulting in more hours to create merchandise or keep a shop open longer.
Health • 16 000 people are severely burned and maimed for life every day as a result of using kerosene lamps. • Indoor kerosene lights have the same effect on the lungs as smoking 40 cigarettes per day. • Women giving birth with kerosene lamps or candles at the bedside provides for poor health care conditions.
Safety • In refugee camps, kerosene lamps regularly cause ‘tent camp fires’, wiping out whole segments of an encampment, resulting in many deaths and injuries. • The communities of 1.3 billion people don’t have street lighting and are extremely dark at night. This increases the risk of crime and (sexual) violence. • WakaWakas eliminate the need for fuel for lighting, lessening the risk of violence during fuel collection.
Environment • Burning kerosene releases approximately 190 million tonnes of carbon dioxide globally. • Kerosene lamps release one third of the world’s black carbon particulate matter into the atmosphere every year. • Resources used for lighting, such as wood, lead to deforestation and land degradation.
WakaWaka Foundation Programs
Empower Initiative The Empower Initiative enables women at the bottom of the pyramid to purchase a WakaWaka product. Local micro-finance institutions include WakaWakas in their micro-loans to empower hours of productivity in the evening with bright LED lighting.
