A GOLDEN Opportunity
Carolina Bucci reinvented AUDEMARS PIGUET’s Royal Oak line with her stunning Frosted Gold collection.
f you wanted to create the perfect women’s watch, one that is both beautiful and functional, wouldn’t you put your faith in the hands of a noted female jewelry designer? That’s exactly what Swiss fine watchmaker Audemars Piguet did in 2016, when it “challenged” Carolina Bucci (pictured right) to create a new collection of Frosted Gold watches for its Royal Oak line. This stunning collection of timepieces, available in white gold, pink gold and a limited-edition yellow gold model, uses her family’s technique—passed down through several generations—to create gorgeous, eye-catching watches beloved by women everywhere. “I am from Florence, so it was important that whatever I created reflected the craftsmanship of the city,” says Bucci. “We are known for our artisanship, and these watches still have a handmade feeling. But it was equally important to me that they feel feminine, without resorting to diamonds or a pink strap or a smaller case. They had to have the same proportion and shape as all of the great Royal Oak watches. And while I want women to treat the watch like a piece of sparkly jewelry, it also had to feel sporty and appropriate for everyday wear. Personally, I swim wearing it, do Pilates wearing it, or
just wear it at work. It never leaves my wrist.” In crafting the original Frosted Gold Royal Oak models, which are among the most popular the brand sells, the designer was a little apprehensive. “I used our Florentine technique somewhat discreetly and cautiously, but I still wanted to capture women’s attention,” Bucci explains. “But eventually, I wanted to make a watch that was bolder and used the technique on larger surfaces. For the limited-edition model, which debuted last fall, the entire case and bracelet is in Florentine-finished yellow gold. It was not an easy task to perfect, but we succeeded.” However, the new case and bracelet are not even the biggest innovation; that would be the shiny, silver-toned mirror that replaces the traditional trademark Tapisserie Royal Oak dial. “When I said I wanted to replace the dial, everybody at the company originally said no because it had never been done before,” she notes. “But I believed it didn’t have to stay that way, and they graciously allowed me to try.” She explains that by putting a mirror in front of the dial, “you can play with it, and the watch will never really look the same way twice. As it reflects the world, it becomes a reflection of your life.”
Watches in Audemars Piguet’s Frosted Gold collection mix feminine with sporty. The yellow gold (above) and pink gold (right) versions are 37mm with an 18K gold case and bracelet.

The new ROLEX Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42 is a perfect fit for every wrist.
n the 1950s, Rolex began its partnership with the New York Yacht Club. Since then, the brand has continued to partner with the world’s most prestigious yacht clubs as well as support pioneering sailors who sought new nautical routes and attempted bold records. It’s no wonder that Rolex watches have become the preferred timepieces of intrepid skippers and ardent yachting enthusiasts for more than 60 years. Nonetheless, men of all stripes will be lining up for the newest edition of the Yacht-Master collection: the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42. This extraordinary timepiece is crafted from 18K white gold, marking the first time the precious metal has been used on a Yacht-Master model. It is also the first watch in this esteemed collection equipped with the state-of-the-art calibre 3235. And, as is only fitting, it is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 meters (330 feet). In addition, this new 42mm model is fitted with a Cerachrom insert in matte black that perfectly complements its black lacquer dial. The Yacht-Master 42 also offers exceptional legibility thanks to its Chromalight display. The dial’s broad hands and hour markers are filled with a luminescent material that emits a long-lasting glow. Equally special are the watch’s monobloc bezel and bezel insert. Not only are these new materials highly corrosion-resistant and virtually scratchproof, but their colors
are extremely intense and unaffected by ultraviolet rays. Practical as well as beautiful, the bezel can be turned with ease thanks to its knurled edge. The Yacht-Master 42’s Oyster case is another work of art. The middle case is crafted from a solid piece of 18K white gold, while the case back, edged with fine fluting, is hermetically screwed down with a one-of-a-kind tool that allows only Rolex watchmakers to access the movement. The winding crown, fitted with the company’s Triplock triple waterproofness system, then screws down securely against the case and is protected by an integral crown guard. As for the crystal, it is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire and is fitted with a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock to magnify the date. For maximum comfort and luxury, the Yacht-Master 42 is fitted with the innovative Oysterflex bracelet, which is made of a flexible metal blade that is manufactured from a titanium and nickel alloy and then over-molded with black high-performance elastomer for durability. The inside of the bracelet is equipped with longitudinal cushions that stabilize the watch on the wrist. In short, no watch will feel better, look better or perform better on your wrist than the Rolex Oyster Perpetual YachtMaster 42—whether you’re on land or at sea.
From top to bottom: In 1969, sailor and writer Bernard Moitessier recorded 37,455 nautical miles in 300 days at sea—the longest nonstop solo voyage; with a Rolex and a sextant, mariners can calculate longitude at sea; the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42.

The Prize of the Collector’s Quest
Patek Philippe’s Grand Complications (top), Aquanaut (middle) and Calatrava (bottom) styles are among watch collectors’ most sought-after timepieces.
here there’s passion, there’s life. Passion is a powerful force that, when combined with curiosity, can ignite a thirst for knowledge and experience. It infuses mere concepts and objects with a life of their own, whether it’s wine, literature or watches. The journey into watch collecting, as with any passion, begins with a spark of curiosity. As a budding collector, the first steps are to learn about the history, the technology and the artistry behind each piece you encounter. Eventually, you realize the journey has become a quest for the “grail watch,” the one that drives your passion. For many, this is a Patek Philippe wristwatch. The question now is which one. A Patek Philippe in any form is a horological masterpiece. The choice, therefore, must be made according to your personal sensibilities and circumstances. The Calatrava first debuted in 1932. Timeless and understated, it features pure lines and is considered to be the world’s premier round watch. There are 19 models available in platinum as well as rose, yellow and white gold. A flawlessly simple design, the Calatrava is best suited to the collector with a taste for classic elegance. For the sporty set, Patek Philippe launched its Nautilus line in 1976 and its younger cousin, the Aquanaut, in 1997. Both feature a rounded octagonalshaped bezel and a case design inspired by a ship’s porthole. With its horizontally embossed dial, the Nautilus has epitomized the elegant sports watch for more than 40 years. Available in steel, rose gold, white gold and two-tone combinations, one of the Nautilus’ 30 models is sure to be a great fit. For the more rugged collector, the Aquanaut is offered in
16 models in white gold, rose gold and stainless steel, all sporting a “Tropical” strap made of a composite material that is ultra-resistant to wear, salt water and UV-radiation. Either the Nautilus or the Aquanaut makes a fine choice for the stylish collector with an active lifestyle. Finally, there are the Complications and Grand Complications. With more than 70 models between them, these families of watches make up a robust collection of tool and specialty timepieces that feature a range of innovations, from the simple date window on an annual calendar to a dial that shows a rotating chart of the nocturnal sky in the northern hemisphere. Here, you’ll find the World Time, designed to meet the needs of the world traveler. The Perpetual Calendar and various other chronographs are feats in mechanical engineering. If you are so inclined, these watches—as well as the ones in the Rare Handcrafts collection, whose dials showcase some of the finest micro-artistry in the world—are the equivalent of wearing a 1961 Château Cheval Blanc or Leo Tolstoy’s original manuscript for War and Peace on your wrist. They represent achievements that have pushed the limits of human potential. Stepping into the watch world is as easy as perusing a wine cellar or browsing in a bookstore. Soon, there’s a glass in your hand, a book under your arm, a watch on your wrist. Whim turns to curiosity, which fueled by passion, becomes a drive to explore, experience and understand. Then suddenly your passion has a life of its own, most poignantly expressed by the beating heart of a Swiss-made mechanical watch. As you search for finer embodiments, you come across many brands until your experience melds with your appreciation for the principles of fine watch-making. When you find yourself buying a Patek Philippe, especially one of its hardto-obtain-models, you’ll know you have arrived.
London Jewelers proudly offers Patek Philippe timepieces in our Americana Manhasset and East Hampton stores.

VAN CLEEF & ARPELS’ Perlée collection is the ultimate in versatile jewelry. oyful, sparkling, feminine. However you describe Van Cleef & Arpels’ stunning Perlée collection, each ring, earring, necklace and bracelet created since the line launched in 2008 has embodied the spirit and craftsmanship of the maison’s long jewelry tradition. This year, Van Cleef & Arpels has introduced a variety of unique pieces to the collection—but two additions stand out above the rest. The new transformable long necklace combines a yellow gold chain with a pendant made up of three differentsized rings that showcase the collection’s iconic gold beads, each of which has been shaped and polished by hand before being strung in a falling line on a thread of gold. The pendant’s central ring can be easily removed and replaced by one of three other bands adorned with beads of sky-blue tur-
quoise, orange-red coral or deep black onyx. By adding color to the necklace, the piece can suit every occasion, from a holiday party to a wedding to a daytime luncheon or romantic dinner. Equally beautiful and versatile is the new Perlée diamonds collection of rings. These delicate and refined creations feature a row of diamonds surrounded by two rows of golden beads—available in yellow, rose and white gold—all of which sparkle to accompany the movements of the hand. Since these rings may be worn in pairs or as a trio, they are ideal for everyday wear or for special events. For each creation in the Perlée collection, the diamonds used by Van Cleef & Arpels are selected according to the most stringent gemological criteria: D to F ratings for color and IF to VVS for clarity. The intense sparkle on the Perlée diamond pieces is magnified by the openwork gold structure, enabling light to pass through. The semiprecious stones in the collection
also meet the maison’s high standards. Onyx stands out for its brilliant black color, turquoise displays an intense and harmonious blue, and coral highlights a bright and cheerful orange accentuated by a smooth and regular surface. Leave it to the masters at Van Cleef & Arpels to fully understand and embrace one’s deepest needs and desires. The new creations of the Perlée collection are without a doubt among this year’s must-have additions to your wardrobe. The new Perlée collection includes versatile, transformable necklaces as well as rings with diamonds ensconced in rows of golden beads.
These masterworks and much more can be found at the Americana Manhasset Van Cleef & Arpels boutique.

The new Clash de CARTIER collection shakes up the brand’s classic codes.
The Clash de Cartier rings, necklace, earrings and bracelet in pink gold celebrate duality—and make spikes and studs look elegantly sophisticated.
he influential style of great rock bands from the 1960s and ‘70s could be described as shiny, spiky and groundbreaking. Now these words apply equally to Clash de Cartier, a stunning line of earrings, bracelets, rings and necklaces from the legendary French maison. This exciting new collection simultaneously champions and eschews classic forms, balances clean design with an excess of energy and serves up a serious spirit with original charm. While ideal for today’s fashion-conscious customer, the Clash de Cartier line draws on the maison’s aesthetic heritage yet shakes up the classic formula. These gorgeous 18K pink gold pieces—some studded with diamonds—possess an innate sense of proportion that simultaneously honors the brand’s longtime penchant for geometry (which dates back to the 1930s), while also taking a swipe at the ideas of protocol, tradition and liberty. It represents a defiant clash of attitudes that the company completely embraces. The overarching idea of the Clash de Cartier collection is to play with the maison’s famed geometric codes—the picot, the clou carré and the bead—by arranging them together in an unprecedented way. Here the picot is pointed but not spiked. Most intriguingly, the picots are interconnected, yet mobile, thanks to a mechanism developed entirely by the maison’s jewelry workshops. Each piece is precisely calibrated to magnetize the forces in order to hold the picots in place. The clou carré is magnified and stands out as an integral element of the design, whereas in the past, it was often used essentially as a touch of punctuation. The buff-top domed clous carrés are each finished with a bright polish produced over a series of operations. The bead, meanwhile, brings a roundness and softness that contrasts with the clou carré’s square shape and geometric lines. In a final sophisticated Cartier jewelry touch, the inside of each piece is scalloped delicately for comfortable wear. It’s that undeniable craftsmanship and attention to detail that makes the Clash de Cartier a natural extension from the brand’s roots. Experience Cartier’s iconic creations at the Americana Manhasset Cartier boutique.

ROBERTO COIN Venetian Palace
The delicate architectural details that adorn the Palazzo Ducale are mirrored in Roberto Coin’s designs. The palace in Venice, the designer’s hometown, inspired the use of geometric shapes and the layering of materials and colors found in this collection. Black and white diamonds with satin-etched gold mimic the differing colors and textures on the ornate palace.

CHANEL’S iconic J12 watch has been subtly reinvented after 20 years.
equal width. Dimensional adjustments were made to the luminescent areas, in black Super-LumiNova for the white J12 and in white on the black models. The thickness of the case was slightly increased—though only discerning eyes can see the difference—and the bassine case and design of the new bracelet were modified subtly with extended links to accentuate this optical illusion. The original bi-material case with its steel bottom was replaced by a one-piece ceramic case equipped with a sapphire crystal. Admirers will notice and marvel at the J12’s new 12.1 caliber automatic movement, specially developed by the new Swiss Kenissi manufacture. The oscillating weight has been redesigned totally in tungsten to produce its openwork while maintaining efficient rewinding power. The caliber is chronometer certified by COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres) and offers a 70-hour power reserve. From these extremely fine modifications emerges an impression of lightness, intangible yet real. s the saying goes, if it’s not broke, don’t fix it. But that doesn’t mean even the greatest invention can’t—or shouldn’t—evolve with the times. Knowing that truth, Chanel has transformed its iconic J12 watch into a timepiece that speaks to yesterday, today and even tomorrow. When Jacques Helleu, artistic director, created the J12 watch at the beginning of the 21st century, he took inspiration from the two worlds he loved most: He greatly admired both the chassis lines of race cars and the regal silhouettes of the vessels that sailed the America’s Cup. Now, 20 years after the watch debuted, Arnaud Chastaingt, director of the Chanel Watch Creation Studio, has given the J12 a subtle yet important makeover. To increase the dial opening, the bezel and crown were refined, the width of the latter reduced by a third, like the ceramic cabochon that adorns it. In the center of the dial, indicators have been added to the inner railway, which itself also has been polished. To fully anchor the J12 in the brand’s codes, the “Automatic” and “Swiss Made” markings are now in the Chanel typeface, with “Swiss Made” integrated on the flange instead of the dial. The numerals applied to the dial are now ceramic, while the hour and minute hands are of
Chanel’s iconic J12 in highly resistant ceramic and steel has been reinvented but still maintains much of the original identity from its debut 20 years ago.

The LONGINES 1832 watch pays homage to the past but uses present-day technology.
The Longines 1832 combines a new house-designed movement with the brand’s longstanding elegance and style.
ew watch companies can stake their claim to the label “heritage brand” as much as Longines. Founded in 1832 by Auguste Agassiz in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, and led for many years by Agassiz’s nephew, Ernest Francillon, Longines continues to demonstrate a commitment to excellence that reflects the company’s long-standing devotion to tradition, elegance and performance. Today, the brand (owned by the Swatch Corporation) is known globally for its unique winged hourglass logo, which debuted in 1867, and is revered for its ongoing role as the official timekeeper of many elite athletic competitions and as a partner of several sports federations. Moreover, Longines has garnered international acclaim for its technical research conducted over the centuries. In 1945, for instance, Longines developed the first self-winding caliber movement, the 22A, which represented a technical breakthrough for both the industry and the company. So it’s far from surprising that technical innovation remains just as important to Longines today as ever. Indeed, new technology is one of the hallmarks of the Longines 1832. The timepiece features an exclusive house-designed movement—the mechanical self-winding Calibre L899—that can be admired through its transparent caseback. The 40mm watch’s other features are equally impressive. The Longines 1832 has a beige dial with a moon phase day and date display, along with applied indexes and silver polished hands, featuring Super-LumiNova technology. The scratch-resistant sapphire crystal contains several layers of anti-reflective coating. Like all Longines models, the 1832 is water-resistant up to three bars. This elegant timepiece looks particularly gorgeous on the wrist thanks to its brown alligator strap with contrast stitching. Given its unparalleled ability to combine the best of the past and the present, it’s no wonder that Longines has remained a favorite of consumers and collectors alike for more than 175 years. The 1832 is destined to be another brand favorite.

For the Love of
For over 90 years, London Jewelers has been the premier source for luxury jewelry and timepieces in the New York area. As a family business, we pride ourselves on our knowledge of the industry, our personal relationships with our customers, and of course, our strong partnerships with some of the best watch and jewelry houses in the world. Here, some of our longtime partners speak about our special bond and what makes London Jewelers so unique.
“Audemars Piguet and London Jewelers are both multi-generational family-owned companies that have a joint commitment to create unparalleled customer experiences with timepieces. This shared understanding and respect for the watch industry has led to nearly 20 years of successful partnership.” —Patrick Ottomani, CEO, Audemars Piguet North America
“For the past 43 years we have enjoyed a wonderful and genuine partnership with London Jewelers. As two family-owned companies that share many of the same values, we provide every customer with the highest level of quality and service. The Udells’ warmth and gracious hospitality are legendary among their clients and peers. We have always had trust and confidence in the Udell family’s ability to represent Patek Philippe to their loyal clientele with incomparable knowledge, pride and passion.” —Lisa Jones, president, Patek Philippe U.S.
“To us, the Udells are not only clients, they are a part of the Vhernier family. We celebrate every opportunity to work with them, whether it be on a yacht in Capri having pasta, at their East Hampton home for a farm fresh breakfast or in Manhasset sharing pizza amid the holiday trunk show. The London Jewelers business is more than just selling jewelry; it’s about building relationships and connecting our brand to clients who are passionate about art, design and craftsmanship. We consider this partnership a privilege, knowing that the company stands behind designers they believe in and continue to support wholeheartedly. This is one of many reasons we at Vhernier love working with London.” —Kate V. Hemphill, director of wholesale, Vhernier “London Jewelers is not only a great partner we have worked with for the last 18 years, but they are also close family friends. Our companies are very similar; both brands have been passed down from generation to generation. For that reason, working with the Udells has always felt like working with family. I moved to the U.S. in 2010, and they have always been very welcoming and supportive.” —Lucrezia Buccellati, creative director, Buccellati
“Jewelry aside (because we’ve had over 30 years of that), my special relationship with London Jewelers starts with my relationship with Mark and Candy Udell. We even have a clubhouse of sorts called St. Rocco’s Bakery where we meet on Saturday mornings to discuss life (and jewelry). I am always jealous of Mark because he orders everything that both my wife and doctor prohibit. However, I couldn’t find a more lovely family with whom to partner in business! Our Roberto Coin boutique at the Oculus is a testament to that relationship.” —Peter Webster, co-founder and president, Roberto Coin Inc.
“We absolutely adore London Jewelers—the Udells run this juggernaut of a company in a personable way, which makes it feel like family. The company is clearly founded in strong relationships and a keen sense for all that is in the domain of jewelry. It’s so refreshing to work with people who just ‘get it’ in one blink. They are an absolutely delightful partner to have.” —Mark Emanuel, co-owner, David Webb

Have Family, WILL TRAVEL While vacationing with the under-18 set brings a unique batch of requirements, it doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style, according to Kid & Coe, a purveyor of chic family friendly vacation destinations worldwide. Whether you’re seeking a loft in the heart of Chicago or a villa in Croatia overlooking the Adriatic Sea, Kid & Coe knows it’s often the little things that go a long way toward making a family trip a success. That’s why in addition to things like Wi-Fi and a washer/dryer, you can see in an instant whether a property has outlet covers, toys and sitter recommendations. The site boasts more than 1,000 curated locations—a range of apartments, condos, villas, homes and some hotels—in 50 countries. Each residence has its own well-appointed style and family friendly benefits: One might feature a stocked playroom, another a large gated backyard with swingset, another an organic garden from which to pick fresh figs and tomatoes for dinner, and another several kids’ bikes for riding to the local beach. In each listing’s detailed “Perks for the Parents” and “Why Kids Love It” sections, you’ll learn the scoop on neighborhood vibe, local shops and eateries, and ideas for activities the whole family will enjoy. Photos give you a good glimpse of the residence’s design, but for the stylishly curious, there are notes on that, too.
Nearly 160 years after the Duchess of Bedford began serving a meal between lunch and dinner, the appeal of scrumptious late-day pastries and savory bites—and tea, of course—is gaining popularity. Restaurants are taking note, infusing a modern take into this indulgence steeped in tradition. On weekends at Brooklyn’s Williamsburg Hotel, guests can enjoy tea tiers in the eclectic Lobby Bar, lounging on plush blue banquettes while listening to live jazz music. The menu is seasonal, featuring macaroons, tarts and avocado toast along with sandwiches and scones. While afternoon tea is often served with Champagne, The Williamsburg also offers tea-inspired cocktails and coffees, such as A Sunday Kinda Love: Singani 63, Aperol, hibiscus tea, honey, lemon and prosecco. If you’re traveling to London, Dalloway Terrace at The Bloomsbury Hotel is a must-tea. The menu and al fresco space changes seasonally, always offering delicious combinations of ingredients and the best tea selection in a modern, botanical setting. Its latest offering adds tropical fruits and spices to classic dishes. The sweets menu includes Mango & Coriander Tart with Pink Peppercorn Meringue, Lychee & Coconut Cake and Pineapple & Red Chilli Terrine. Dalloway Terrace also added some Sri Lankan options to their extensive range of teas by the Rare Tea Company. Now what was that about brunch?

THE London Jewelers GUIDE
Gorgeous Homewares ELEVATE THE EVERYDAY High-end homewares are anything but stuffy thanks to today’s designers who are constantly innovating to create products that marry style and function. A recent addition to London Jewelers, Lily Juliet’s colorful spice bowls are inspired by managing director Joel Levin’s time in the exotic East. “Walk down any alley in Hanoi, Bangkok or Manila, and you will inhale the aroma of spices,” he says. Shells, meanwhile, form the heart of Lily Juliet’s unique caviar dishes and the entire form of the caviar spoon, reflecting Levin’s passion for combing for shells on remote sandbars. Designer Tom Dixon is known for his conversationstarting pieces, and that includes his sculptural tableware. Something as simple as a glass of morning OJ becomes a stylish ritual when you use Bump short glasses. The Carved bowl featuring mouth-blown, double-layered black and white glass adds interest and beauty to any countertop, as do the Bone bowls, made of sculptural solid brass bearing a bone-like quality. William Yeoward specializes in handmade glass. Its Studio line features stylish pieces inspired by the Mediterranean. Bella Bianca and Bella Blue, with their spiral trails of white and azure, remind us of sparkling oceans, billowy clouds and that oh-so-refreshing sea breeze. Visit London Jewelers’ Gift Salon to find these and more creative, functional pieces that help make your daily rituals anything but mundane.

The Story, The Dream How did a hopeful and driven Greek silversmith evolve into a world-renowned Italian luxury brand, creating jewels loved by celebrities, royalty and fashion icons alike? Much of this mystery is revealed in the exhibition “Bulgari: La Storia, Il Sogno” (The Story, The Dream) displayed in two museums in Rome from late June to early November of 2019. Featuring jewels, historic photos, films and more, it follows Bulgari’s history. Woven throughout are anecdotes of the talent, passion and ability of founder Sotirio Bulgari and subsequent generations of his family. Bulgari first made a name for himself with English tourists visiting Rome who adored his silver ornaments. Later, his sons suggested focusing on high jewelry in order to grow, a decision that would secure the family’s place in Italian—and world—history. Pieces formerly in the collections of Elizabeth Taylor, Gina Lollobrigida, Ingrid Bergman, Anna Magnani and Audrey Hepburn are on display, illustrating the penchant of movie stars from the legendary La Dolce Vita era. The show also includes jewels from the company’s Heritage Collection, some of which are on exhibit for the first time. They were chosen to showcase the craftsmanship, taste for color, sumptuous shapes and rounded lines that are hallmarks of the Bulgari style. In early 2020, London Jewelers will unveil an expanded Bulgari presence in our Americana Manhasset flagship, showcasing the brand’s iconic collections including B.zero1, Serpenti and more.

We asked some of our favorite fashionistas how they’d style the hottest new arrivals from London Jewelers.
Rebecca Cohen of LOVESHACKFANCY LoveShackFancy was founded in 2013 and is inspired by vintage finds. “The collection is rich in detail, flattering silhouettes, soft hues and intricate lace, with an emphasis on whimsical hand-dyed fabrics and enchanting vintage-inspired romantic floral prints,” explains creative director Rebecca Hessel Cohen. The brand originated from Cohen’s desire to design the perfect bridesmaid dress for her own ethereal summer wedding at her family’s Bridgehampton home. From an initial collection of hand-dyed silk dresses, LoveShackFancy quickly gained a dedicated following for its romantic pieces that whisper of dream escapes and special moments.

Color my WORLD
PAOLO COSTAGLI’s brilliant use of colored stones is the designer’s trademark.
electing the right shade is of the utmost importance, whether it’s for a dress, shoe or piece of jewelry. The color you choose creates attitude for an outfit, but various hues can also grab another person’s attention or simply brighten one’s mood. Few jewelry designers know how to work as well with color as Paolo Costagli. The Florentine-born Costagli moved to the United States in 1988 to pursue becoming a graduate gemologist at the Gemological Institute of America and launched his successful brand in 1993. Since then, his work has been frequently awarded, most notably his cutting-edge, intricately shaped Brillante collection, known for its stunningly polished geometric gold. Nonetheless, it’s Costagli’s expertise with using colored gems—found in his Eternita, Florentine and Valentina collections—that makes him stand out in the jewelry world. Indeed, many of his admirers choose one of Costagli’s engagement rings that use vibrant gems, especially sapphires, instead of a more traditional diamond center stone. As Costagli notes, it’s his superior understanding of the three most important factors in choosing the right stone—hue, tone and contrast— that ensures each gem used is the best. To many, hue means little more than the basic concept of color, such as saying a gemstone is blue, red, green or yellow. But Costagli points out that every colored stone has both a primary and secondary color (and sometimes even a tertiary one). For his creations, however, Costagli insists on using gems that are as free of secondary colors as possible. Tone refers to the depth of color from light to dark, and Costagli, like most fine jewelers, wants gems that fall in the middle of that spectrum. To find a perfect stone, he’ll
examine it under a table or away from any direct light; if the gemstone still has life and brilliance away from direct light, then it’s worthy of Designer Paolo being part of the collection. Costagli says his understanding Lastly, there’s saturation, of hue, tone and which is the intensity of the gemcontrast ensures that the gemstones stone’s color. Costagli chooses ones he uses are the that are vivid, so that the color is simvery best. ply unmistakable. That’s true whether it’s a ruby, a tourmaline or a peridot. For Costagli, every stone, like every woman, deserves to be seen in its most beautiful form! Find Paolo Costagli’s colorful creations at London Jewelers’ Americana Manhasset location.

SHOW STOPPERS Red carpet jewelry so luxe it deserves an encore.
hen it comes to head-turning jewelry for your next big event, look no further than London Jewelers’ world-class selection of exquisite creations. Take the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, for example, where our brand partners—Bulgari, Chopard, de Grisogono, Messika and others—dominated the red carpet. We turned to our contacts for a behind-the-scenes look at how your favorite celebrities find the jaw-dropping baubles they wear when all eyes are on them. “We have had and continue to have the honor that 90 percent of the time, stylists and celebrities reach out directly to us to wear Messika for both red carpet events and for their everyday wear,” says Valérie Messika, founder of the French and relatively new high jewelry brand Messika. It took off in 2014 after Beyoncé posted a photo on Instagram in which she was wearing the Messika Glam’Azone double ring; she had discovered it in a window at the Royal Monceau Palace in Paris. “This gave incredible visibility to the brand, and as it is a small industry, many stylists started reaching out to Messika,” she says. Moreover, Messika keeps in mind the wearer’s personal style “by selecting and proposing pieces which we think they will
adore…. We are very reactive, and we make sure to always provide what they are looking for in accordance with their dress or their look.” This is one of many reasons why Middle Eastern influencer Lana El Sahely and model Olivia Culpo selected unique Messika pieces for Cannes, and why other notable ladies like Beyoncé, Charlize Theron, Sienna Miller, Emily Blunt and Kendall Jenner are such avid fans of Messika’s pieces. Another popular pick for red carpets is Bulgari, often chosen by stars who want to make a truly memorable accessories statement. Selena Gomez, for example, opted for a stunning oversized collar diamond necklace from Bulgari for her Cannes debut, pairing it with an ’80s-era Madonna-esque Louis Vuitton crop top and skirt at the premiere of The Dead Don’t Die. Bulgari is known primarily for its gemstone jewelry in rich, vibrant colors, but as Gomez proves, the brand certainly knows how to dazzle with diamonds, too. Then there are Swiss brand de Grisogono’s unique collections, which also epitomize red carpet style. When we spoke to de Grisogono CEO Céline Assimon about why the brand is so popular with actresses, models and more, she explained that “de Grisogono has become synonymous with the red carpet because of our colorful,
bold, one-of-a-kind high jewelry pieces. From the Cannes Film Festival to the Met Gala, the maison collaborates with Hollywood’s top stylists and stars, whether they are up-and-coming or established talents.” For the Cannes premiere of Rocketman, Eva Longoria gravitated toward de Grisogono’s ball-drop earrings in white and brown diamonds, which perfectly complemented her unique, embroidered chainmail gown by designer Cristina Ottaviano. Chopard, an official Cannes Film Festival partner for more than 20 years, continues to outdo itself when it comes to designing wow-worthy pieces. At the 2019 event, it had all eyes on actress Elle Fanning, the youngest member of the festival jury, as she made headlines in riveting fashion paired with Chopard accessories all put together by her stylist, Samantha McMillen. Chopard’s marketing team gave us an exclusive peek inside the storied brand’s design process, which originates in the mind of Chopard co-president and creative director Caroline Scheufele. Intended to adorn stars for their red carpet appearances, special creations take shape through a collaboration of
talented artisans, from those who create the initial sketches to stone cutters, gem setters and polishers. Chopard’s emphasis is typically on the necklace, as it puts the focus on the wearer’s décolletage and has the impeccably cut stones—including rubies, sapphires, diamonds, emeralds and more—on full display. Each year, the maison challenges itself to increase the number of unique jewelry pieces it creates to match the number of festival editions to date, so we eagerly await all 73 pieces to be released in 2020. The next time you need jaw-dropping accessories for a gala or other special occasion, visit us at London Jewelers, where our own in-house stylists will roll out the red carpet to make sure you sparkle and shine. Top, left to right: Eva Longoria steals the show in de Grisogono earrings with white and brown diamonds; Selena Gomez makes her Cannes debut in a Bulgari diamond collar necklace set in platinum; Elle Fanning tops off her hot pink Gucci gown with a 38.99 carat pear- and round-shaped diamond necklace and 18K white gold Chopard earrings. Bottom, left to right: Jasmine Tookes is a ray of light in de Grisogono’s statement-making earrings; Julianne Moore floats down the carpet in jaw-dropping emerald and diamond earrings by Chopard; Bella Hadid’s ruby and diamond jewels from Bulgari command the crowd’s attention.
With artisans who embrace Italian craftsmanship and new technology, POMELLATO creates an unmistakable collection of jewelry.
ino Rabolini stayed true to his family’s heritage when he founded Pomellato in 1967, combining fine Milanese craftsmanship with a fashion-forward philosophy. Today, the brand is renowned for its colorful, exuberant designs and its use of both traditional and innovative goldsmithing techniques. Among these techniques is lost-wax casting, also known as microfusion, which originated in Egypt thousands of years ago and involves meticulously setting semi-precious stones and gems. “Many new Pomellato prototypes are painstakingly chiseled from a block of wax as if they were small sculptures,” says Vincenzo Castaldo, creative director of Pomellato. But the 100-plus renowned artists who work out of the Milanese atelier also incorporate new technologies such as 3D printing into their work, especially into the chains, which are some of the brand’s most distinct pieces. “All our chains feature the Pomellato signature,” says Castaldo, “which involves
Pomellato’s Tango Collection is renowned for its signature Gourmette chain, which puts the brand’s expert craftsmanship and innovative use of stones on full display.
the pulling, winding and twisting of gold wire to create the links of the chain that are then hand-cut and meticulously reassembled one by one. For Pomellato chains, the style remains unmistakable.” Also unrivaled is the bond between the highly skilled goldsmiths at Casa Pomellato, a large part of the reason the brand has been renowned for its craftsmanship over the years. “A great atmosphere can help creativity find its best expression,” Castaldo says. “The expertise and experience are incredible. All are passionate, each with his or her own personality and individuality but united by the common thread of knowing very well, deep in their hearts and souls, Pomellato’s aesthetic.” Castaldo points out that one craftsman in particular has worked for Pomellato for more than two decades, and before that his father was a part of the company for 50 years. Talk about being steeped in Italian tradition! Castaldo adds that Pomellato employs a “360-degree vision” in its atelier, which means each goldsmith is taught how to finesse every technique and each step in the process. This allows for more collaboration and experimentation and results in some of the most exquisite jewelry in the world. Still (and not to discredit the know-how of the company’s artisans) Italy’s fashion capital, Milan, continues to serve as Pomellato’s biggest source of inspiration. “Milano has been able to wisely intertwine the various expressions of creativity, from fashion to design, from the arts to culture,” Castaldo says. “Milano, constantly reinventing itself, has been, is and will continue to be a great inspiration for us.” Explore Pomellato’s Nudo, Iconica and Sabbia collections at our Americana Manhasset and East Hampton locations.

A Beautiful HEART The Rescue Paw Foundation and Gizele Oliveira partner to save precious lives.
izele Oliveira, a Brazilian native, began her modeling career as a favor to her uncle, a bridalwear designer, but she was too shy to take it any further until an agent noticed her at one of his shows. Soon after, in 2014, she signed with IMG Models and moved to the U.S. to pursue that career path full time, making her fashion week debut at Dolce & Gabbana the very same year. She has since walked the runways for Elie Saab, Rebecca Minkoff, Tory Burch and Victoria’s Secret, among others; appeared in international editions of Vogue, Elle and Harper’s Bazaar; and was featured in ad campaigns for MAC and H&M. Now, the animal lover is partnering with No Dogs Left Behind and London Jewelers president Candy Udell’s Rescue Paw Foundation. Read on to learn more about this sweet beauty who’s on her way to becoming a top international model. On the day of our photo shoot, you had just returned from Hawaii and were leaving the next day for a job in St. Barths. How much of the year do you spend traveling, and where do you currently consider “home”? I feel like most of the time I’m traveling somewhere for work or vacation, which is the life I’ve always dreamed of! I consider New York City my home at the moment, but I’m always missing Brazil. How did you meet Candy Udell and Jeffrey Beri of No Dogs Left Behind? I was looking to work with an organization that loved animals

just as much as I do, and my public relations agent connected me with Candy and Jeffrey. A partnership with the Rescue Paw Foundation and No Dogs Left Behind is truly a perfect match. This fall, you will travel to China to help No Dogs Left Behind rescue animals from the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. Why did this cause speak to you? The Yulin Dog Meat Festival was one of the main reasons why I stopped eating meat, so to me, being part of this was inevitable. I hope my work with them will bring a lot of awareness about how horribly people treat animals, especially in the meat industry. I can’t wait to bring dogs back to loving homes. Your own dog, Bieber, is adorable and even has his own Instagram account, @bieberthedog. We’d love to know more about him! Bieber is a Havanese-Bichon mix, and I got him at an amazing time in my life. I was feeling super sad and lonely, and he brought me so much happiness! He’s the sweetest animal ever; I’m a really proud mom. I adopted him from a place in Brooklyn. He was so little and sick, but he turned out to be the best thing that has ever happened to me. How would you describe your own style, and what were some of your favorite London Jewelers pieces that you tried on during our shoot? My favorites were the diamond necklaces—they made me feel so glamorous! For everyday wear, I love mixing big chains with more dainty diamond pieces. London Jewelers has something for every style. Tell us about your upcoming work. Which magazines and runways can we expect to see you on in the near future? I’m so happy because this year I got to do a lot of magazines. I did an editorial for Harper’s Bazaar, and I’ll soon be appearing in Vogue Taiwan and also L’Officiel St. Barths.

GIVING BACK C
Best Friends Animal Society honors London Jewelers president Candy Udell for her ongoing efforts and work with her Rescue Paw Foundation.
andy Udell has been working tirelessly as the president of London Jewelers for decades, but for over 20 years, she’s simultaneously been using her own personal resources and connections to help a cause she feels strongly about—animal rescue. And all of Candy’s hard work culminated at this year’s Best Friends Animal Society’s “Save Them All” benefit, where the London Jewelers matriarch was honored for her self-sacrificing efforts. Held in April at Guastavino’s in New York City, the sold-out dinner drew quite a crowd, which included a who’s who of the fine jewelry business and a gaggle of New York socialites and animal-obsessed celebrities including Amanda Seyfried, Emmy Rossum and Justin Theroux. But the most important guest of the evening was undoubtedly Candy, who over the course of two decades has worked with her Rescue Paw Foundation and local adoption agencies to find homes for close to 4,000 dogs who were housed in overpopulated shelters down South. She also supports No Dogs Left Behind, a nonprofit which aims to end China’s heinous dog-meat market, and works with many animal welfare organizations, no-kill shelters and humane groups in underprivileged areas to help prevent dogs and cats from having to enter the shelter system. Moreover, for the past few years, Rescue Paw Foundation has partnered with HEART to fund and deliver humane education programs in Nassau County schools. The curriculum teaches students of all ages about social justice, animal protection, environmental ethics—and how the three are intertwined. In the coming months, Rescue Paw Foundation and Best Friends will collaborate again to host a conference with six of its partner shelters, exploring the challenges small shelters face and coming up with ideas on how the larger organizations can help. “Candy is such a joy to work with. In her mind, there is a solution to every problem,” says Julie Castle, CEO of Best Friends Animal Society. “Her generosity, her love of the animals and her collaborative spirit helped make this year’s benefit a record-breaking success.” Furthering her activist efforts, Candy also created a line of jewelry called Our Cause for Paws. The dog-inspired bracelets, necklaces and earrings are sold at London Jewelers’ six Join Rescue Paw locations and at londonjewelers.com to help raise Foundation funds for the Rescue Paw Foundation’s ongoing at its upcoming adoption event! work with animals. TWO Sides to Every (Love) Story
After seven years together, Justin Camirand and Allyson McGintee start their happilyever-after with TWO by London. Tell us how the two of you met and began dating. Allyson: We actually grew up in the same neighborhood just a few blocks away from each other, but it wasn’t until 2012 that our paths crossed. Unbeknownst to me, Justin and my brother Jimmy started playing on a softball team together. One summer night, I tagged along with my brother, who had plans with Justin. There was a spark the moment we laid eyes on each other. Fast forward seven years: We are happily in love and beyond excited to spend the rest of our lives together. Justin: Allyson’s brother Jimmy introduced us back in 2012, and ever since then, we’ve been in love. What is your favorite thing about your partner? A: I love everything about Justin inside and out, so picking one favorite thing is insanely hard. He has the biggest heart; he is the most supportive and respectful person and he has the best personality. He is there for me and everyone else (including strangers) at the drop of a hat. Justin’s positive vibes and advice inspire me every day. Justin is my very best
friend, and I’m so grateful to have him in my life forever. J: My favorite thing about Allyson is how compassionate and loving she is. She is strong, fierce and a great competitor. She is family-oriented, loyal and willing to help others no matter the time of day. She is such a great person, and the world needs more people like Allyson in it. Being in love with your best friend is the best perk in the world. I’m forever grateful. Tell us the story of your proposal. J: It was our anniversary, and we went to our favorite hideaway beach and caught the most beautiful view before the sun went down. We talked about all the things we love and appreciate about each other. I told Allyson how much I love her and how I want to spend the rest of my life with her, and proposed. I am one happy man. A: Justin laid out a blanket covered with rose petals at our favorite spot on the beach. We watched the sunset and told each other how much we love one another. I’m pretty sure I blacked out from shock when he popped the question, but I cried tears of happiness, and I will cherish that day forever.
Any funny moments? J: Well, before the proposal, we were coming back home from East Hampton, and I got a call that the ring was ready to be picked up. Allyson asked who it was, and I told her it must have been a telemarketer, but I thought my cover was blown! A: That was a close call, but Justin totally played it cool! What was the best part of your TWO by London experience? J: I ventured all over in pursuit of the perfect engagement ring, and every time I went somewhere else I felt disappointed and lost. The knowledge and experience of the TWO by London staff is unlike any other. I learned a lot from Andriana. We formed a bond during my numerous visits to the shop, and now TWO by London is family forever. A: This experience would not have been the same without Andriana. They are absolutely incredible to work with. They treat us like family and check in with us. Whenever I go to TWO by London, they welcome me with open arms and take the best care of me.

Your Diamond Does Good in the World DIAMONDS, FORMED BILLIONS OF YEARS AGO, ARE IMPROVING THE PRESENT AND CREATING A SPARKLING FUTURE
efore there was life, there were diamonds. In ancient Greece, they were known as “tears of the gods.” Created by rare natural conditions billions of years ago, they are the oldest thing a person will touch or own.
However, diamonds are not simply a connection to the distant past. Today, modern diamond mining supports the livelihoods of 10 million people around the world. Through skilled jobs, improved access to healthcare, and direct investments in local communities, diamonds strengthen communities across the globe as they travel from mine to jewelry box.
Kesego Jarona is one of the millions of people for whom diamonds tell a very personal, life-changing story. The first female electrical apprentice at the Debswana company in Botswana, Jarona saw first-hand that modern diamond mining offers opportunities for personal and community growth. “Mining inspired me when I was a schoolkid growing up in the mining town of Selebi Phikwe,” she says. Mining jobs are often highly skilled and are supported by extensive investments in worker training and education. The industry provided Jarona with educational opportunities that gave her control over her future. “I rose from being an artisan in a male-dominated field to become a fully-fledged mining engineer,” she says. In addition to providing tens of thousands of safe, well-paying jobs that often become lifelong careers, modern diamond mining creates $292 million of benefits annually for social programs, such as funding local hospitals and education. And considering most diamonds are discovered in remote regions—from the edges of the Kalahari Desert to Canada’s far north—where sustainable development resources can be scarce, these opportunities are often vital to communities writing their next chapter. Supporting the future of these communities also means aiding their children today. Around the world, families from remote regions often have to travel long distances to obtain the care their children require.

“The diamond industry is not just a fixture in our community. It is a part of our lives. Diamonds to me represent more than natural beauty. For us, they symbolize a future of possibilities.” DR. MOKGWEETSI E. K. MASISI, PRESIDENT OF BOTSWANA
In the Siberian city of Yakutsk, Russia’s ALROSA provided critical funding for the construction of a children’s rehabilitation center in 2014. The $12 million center now provides therapy for 3,000 children each year with a range of physical and psychiatric disorders. The center includes a hotel for those families that need to travel from other regions to receive care. For the mother of three-year-old Sasha, who has cerebral palsy and hardly walks or talks, the center is invaluable. “Today my son waved his hand to me for the first time in his life,” she said on a recent visit to the center. “The diamond industry is not just a fixture in our community. It is a part of our lives,” explains Dr. Mokgweetsi E. K. Masisi, president of Botswana. “Diamonds to me represent more than natural beauty. For us, they symbolize a future of possibilities.” For centuries, humanity has been captivated by diamonds. They connect us across centuries and nations; they communicate beyond language and between generations. Today, these links are stronger than ever, and are building a better future for all.

End of an Era
As Victoria’s Secret announces it will no longer stage its iconic annual runway show, we look back at our Fantasy Bra design partnership.
ondon Jewelers has been fortunate to be a part of some pretty amazing events over the years, but perhaps two of the most memorable are the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Shows in 2011 and 2012, when we were given the distinguished honor of designing the brand’s coveted Fantasy Bras. The Fantasy Bra was introduced at the second Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in 1996, worn by world-famous supermodel Claudia Schiffer. Since then, being chosen by the brand to wear this iconic garment is a career-changing honor for a model. Being asked to design it—and provide all the other jewelry on the runway—was just as big of an honor. The intensive design process began with the Victoria’s Secret team presenting London Jewelers with five themes from which to choose. For the 2011 Fantasy Bra, worn by Miranda Kerr, we explored an “underwater” theme. “We received the push-up bra, we dyed it the color of the sea, and from there we started brainstorming,” says Candy Udell, president of London Jewelers. “The centerpiece of the design were four large white and yellow diamonds totaling over 44 carats. Below, we added a large tassel made of pearls for maximum drama.” Candy explains that it took about six weeks from start to finish to complete the bra, a process that included choosing the theme, sketching designs, making the molds, fitting the model, sourcing the stones and then placing them by hand. The following year, the London Jewelers team did it all over again, this time for the garden-themed Floral Fantasy Bra worn by Alessandra Ambrosio. “This came out really beautifully because there were three pieces and it was more intricate with flowers and enameling,” Candy gushes. The bra was caged in gold and featured amethysts, sapphires, tsavorite, rubies and white, pink and yellow diamonds, all set in 18K rose and yellow gold. This bra, along with a matching belt and jeweled perfume bottle, eventually sold to a private client, making London Jewelers one of the only retailers to ever sell a Fantasy Bra. This year marks the end of an era. Though we’re disappointed that Victoria’s Secret will no longer be producing its annual fashion show, the entire London Jewelers team is grateful for the opportunity to have been involved. Says Candy, “It definitely was the experience of a lifetime.” Left: Mark and Candy Udell, Randi Udell Alper and Miranda Kerr pose with the 2011 Fantasy Treasure Bra.
