Not hing to Wear

Local fashion/lifestyle blogger Chloe Reed shares the latest trends for spring. @nothingtowear.blog | nothingtowearblog.com MATCHY MATCHY

HOOP THERE IT IS

Wearing the same color from head to toe has never been cool until now. Match everything. Bags, shoes, accessories—any and everything. Pick a color and go for it. Bright pink, baby blue and yellow are just a few of the “it” colors that are going to be lighting up the streets this spring.

Hoop earrings are the easiest trend to try this season. Whether they are simple or out-there, you can find a pair of hoops in your budget to pair with any outfit. The bigger the better.

FLOWER POWER Floral has always been a big spring classic, but this year it’s going to a whole new level. The more floral the more fun. Designers have been using brightly colored, big, bold floral prints for the upcoming season.

FORTY BUT SPORTY Sportswear has become a closet essential. Not only is your tracksuit for running around town all day, but it can now be transformed to a datenight outfit. Joggers in particular have become a fan favorite. Pair your best sweats with heels for a classic look that will keep you feeling comfortable.

T he Big Day

Whether you’re newly engaged or hoping to be soon, we’ve got the scoop on wedding decor trends from Bronwyn Spain, owner and creative director of one of Oklahoma’s hottest wedding venues, Spain Ranch. MINIMALISM

WHITE

THE BLACK BARN

A shift to minimalism is everpresent in the wedding industry. More couples are choosing to forgo large weekend events for smaller unconventional celebrations like weekday weddings and elopements. The couples that stick with a traditional weekend wedding are opting for smaller guest lists and paring down details, like minimizing centerpieces in favor of a single large floral installation.

White is dominant in every detail this season. Brides are seeking a timeless look and white is undeniably classic.

Spain Ranch is currently in the process of constructing a new venue for small gatherings. The Black Barn at Spain Ranch is slated to open this summer.

METALS Silver will be making a comeback and black will make its debut as a hot metal now that gold and rose gold have had a few years of trending.

COMMUNITY

L ocal Style

We chatted with Bruce G. Weber customer and former Mrs. America, Michelle Evans, about all things fashion, beauty and community. Evans was a NICU nurse at Hillcrest Hospital South in Tulsa and became Mrs. America in 2015. She used her title to promote Drug Free Oklahoma, a resource for people seeking assistance or help to find local treatment facilities for prescription drug abuse. These days, she’s busy in graduate school, pursuing her degree as a pediatric nurse practitioner, and spending time with her family. She is still involved in community events around Oklahoma.

Michelle Evans Mrs. America 2015

What’s in my purse? Essentials: hand sanitizer because I’m a mom germophobe, snacks for my babies and wipes (not pictured because I ran out). #momlife The handbag: A classic Chanel Grand Black Caviar Shopper. What piece of jewelry do you never leave the house without? Besides my wedding ring, simple round diamond stud earrings my husband gave me. I wear them 24/7. What item in your closet do you wear the most? Right now, my favorite Lands End slippers are what I put on as soon as I get home to play with my babies. What are your go-to beauty products? L’Oréal Double Extend mascara. It has a primer that you can double coat before applying the actual mascara; I always carry some in my bag. I also love Soar lip liner from MAC. Essential. Beauty tip: Whatever lotions or serums you put on your face, also put on your hands to prevent aging. What was your favorite part of being Mrs. America? Getting to speak nationally on my platform of treating prescription drug abuse and my family being there with me. What charity is near and dear to your heart? I can only choose one? The Little Light House from Tulsa, Oklahoma will steal your heart. It helps special needs children - newborn to 6 years old - with free education, speech therapy, physical therapy, etc. You leave this place better than when you came.

Cooking Up Compassion

Bruce G. Weber was proud to sponsor and participate in several events around Tulsa this past year, starting with Tulsa’s Annual White Party last May. It was followed by the Painted Pony Ball in October, the Oklahoma Wedding Show in January and the American Heart Association’s Heart Ball in February. The most recent event was a new partnership with Catholic Charities at its annual gala, Cooking Up Compassion. Catholic Charities’ mission is “to be Christ’s merciful love to those who suffer in the community.” They offer 14 life-changing programs and six outreach centers aimed at helping neighbors in need, from feeding the hungry to providing general dental care, making Eastern Oklahoma a better place to live. DESIGNERS

Jewelry icon DAVID YURMAN talks inspiration, exploration and collaboration.

I

Theodore Roszak, Yurman designed a bronze necklace for Sybil that got picked up by a gallery and quickly sold out. This evolved into the Yurmans’ first business: selling their jewelry at arts and crafts fairs. David and Sybil got married in 1979, and a year later relaunched the company as David Yurman. Year one, a good omen: an award from the World Gold Council for the Starlight

t all started with a book on prehistoric art that fascinated 11-year-old David Yurman. In high school, he learned welding from noted sculptor Ernesto Gonzales, then lived an artist’s life in California before moving back East to Greenwich Village. In 1969, he met a beautiful young artist named Sybil (later to become his wife) while working for sculptor Hans Van de Bovenkamp. Then, apprenticing with highly esteemed sculptor

“Sybil’s works are lyrical with elemental forms, expressed with a poet’s subtle color palette.”

DAVID YURMAN

The company’s roots are based on the collaborative partnership between me and Sybil, along with our son Evan. We exchange ideas as well as artistic exploration. I’d like to think our success can be attributed to remaining true to our origins. When Sybil and I started the company, it was simply to make beautiful things to wear. The business was and is a vehicle for our creative expression.

necklace, precursor to the iconic Cable design. Known to be as philanthropic as they are creative, and now collaborating with their talented son Evan, the Yurmans’ designs are sold in the finest stores around the world, and their collections extend to one-of-a-kind rare gemstones.

HERE, WE CATCH UP WITH ARTIST/DESIGNER DAVID YURMAN TO BRING US UP TO DATE:

You and Sybil are a rarity in the fashion world; what’s the secret to being both business partners and life partners?

What inspires your designs these days?

I think because we’re both artists and view life creatively, we have become soul mates. Ironically, we never set out to create a business. It sprang from the way we painted or did sculpture: a private moment, dreaming with our hands. From the beginning, as a painter and a sculptor, Sybil and I responded to each other’s creative ideas. We work and collaborate together every day. I credit Sybil with bringing much of the beautiful color to our collections. Her works are lyrical with elemental forms, expressed with a poet’s subtle color palette. Also, the way she’s always worn jewelry has inspired the casual, bohemian elegance for which our designs have become known. The stacking, the layering, the bold scales. I realized early on that we didn’t have to separate the worlds of form and color, of sculpture and painting—they merge organically in our various jewelry collections.

I continue to draw inspiration from art. I’m always inspired by what is modern yet enduring, new pairings of materials or an unexpected combination of colored stones. My designs incorporate a wide range of cultural influences; we are not a brand driven by trend.

With such an extensive body of work, do you have a favorite collection or piece?

For the past 30 years, I’ve evolved the Cable motif in my jewelry, reinventing the twisted helix into myriad designs. Cable provides a textural contrast to smooth, polished metal. It appears in elements as small as a bead or a clasp, and can be used as an elegant setting for a gemstone. In essence, Cable is the DNA of the brand.

What do you consider the main reasons for your success in this highly competitive business?

Thank you David and Sybil Yurman, for reminding us that in jewelry, as in nature, components that evolve organically form a stronger and more perfect union than if forced or contrived. It's art imitating life.

We could never have imagined when we started the company in 1980 that it would grow to the size and breadth it is today.

r e k a M e h t t Mee

Randy Deere studied computer science and art at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College and Oklahoma State University. During college, he took a summer job in a jewelry store. Soon, a bench jeweler had taken him under his wing. “My minor in college was art, which worked hand-in-hand with the jewelry field,” Randy says. “My interest only amplified when I saw what I could create with my hands.” Almost 50 years later, he is now a respected jeweler at Bruce G. Weber.

MOST MEMORABLE PIECES There are many. I have set diamonds the size of quarters and beautiful stones of color. But for some reason, the unusual sticks with me. One example is a wedding set on which I very carefully disguised two turtles into the design of the ring. The customer was very happy with the result. MOST INTERESTING COMPLIMENT A very “country” customer once told me,

“You could make something beautiful out of a sow’s ear.” ON LIFELONG LEARNING I was offered tuition at Kansas City School of Watchmaking, where I learned about watches and jewelry. But my best education came from Ollie Marler, a local master on the bench. I have worked with seasoned jewelers and fresh-outof-school jewelers. I can say I learned something from them all.

“The precious stones selected by Rolex endow its gem-set watches with unparalleled prestige.

W

hat is it about Rolex that has kept it in a class of its own for 113 years? In addition to its mechanical superiority, consider the exceptional gemstones that enhance these timepieces. Starting with the most stringent selection criteria, each stone is sorted individually by hand and closely examined to surpass standards of carat, clarity, color and cut. Using only top-quality colorless diamonds in brilliant 8/8, trapeze or baguette cuts, artisan gem-setters then work their magic: bead setting, channel setting, bezel setting and prong or claw setting, all to create an ideal arrangement of perfectly positioned gems. Consider too the Rolex gold, ascribed to the absolute purity of exclusive alloys that Rolex creates in its own foundry by melting noble metals at over 1,000 degrees Celsius. It is at these foundries that its 18K gold (yellow, white or Everose) is cast and formed to ensure a peerless luster for its watch cases and bracelets. (In its 24-karat state, gold is too malleable for watchmaking, so it must be alloyed with silver, copper or other elements; since quality and properties of alloys can vary, Rolex chose to install its own foundry to ensure perfection.) Forever a symbol of purity and eternal brilliance, gold remains the stuff of legends, Rolex gold the crowning glory.

Opposite: After selecting the world’s finest stones, master gem-setters at Rolex precisely align the height of the gems, their orientation and position.

GIVING BACK

a s l u T f o y t e i c o Humane S

IF YOU’RE LUCKY, A DOG WILL COME INTO YOUR LIFE, STEAL YOUR HEART AND CHANGE

everything In 2017, the Humane Society of Tulsa saved the lives of 1,700 homeless animals in our community. While many were adopted into new homes right here in Green Country, over 500 of those pets found homes in other states like Wisconsin, Virginia, Illinois and Colorado thanks to its progressive transport program. Since 2010, Humane Society of Tulsa has built an extensive network of partner organizations across the country in an effort to help as many Oklahoma dogs as possible find new homes. The Humane Society of Tulsa promotes its mission of Keeping Pets and People Together by partnering with many other Tulsa agencies to provide free boarding, veterinary care and pet food to those facing difficult financial or family circumstances, so they do not have to relinquish their family pets. They also offer an ongoing community Pet Food Pantry program to anyone in need. Its Humane Emergency Animal Response Team (HEART) is the official Tulsa County Animal Response Team, responding to natural disasters and man-made disasters that leave animals in crisis. HEART is also dedicated to supporting law-enforcement in Oklahoma with animal cruelty cases. Its ability to shelter and provide care for animals allows law-enforcement officers to prosecute and stop animal abusers. The Humane Society of Tulsa programs and services are made possible strictly through private donations, volunteers and community support.

Bruce G. Weber is proud to join the cause!
