the delights of october m ay b e i t ’ s t h e way t h e
trees become a riot of color. Or the knowledge that halloween will soon give us an excuse to be silly and dress up in wild costumes. Or simply the fact that, while surely cold weather is on its way, there are still wonderfully comfortable days outdoors that rival anything in may. whatever the cause, i’ve always responded joyfully to the coming of October—and i gather i’m not alone. the pages of this Bergen Health & Life can’t help reflecting that joy. we celebrate the outdoors, for example, in “a Rock and a hard scape” on page 48, which offers lovely inspiration for designing alfresco living spaces with both practicality and panache. as for riots of color, you’ll find one in “a spectrum of Possibilities” on page 54, which presents ideas for flower arrangements that will light up a room, and another in our home Front department starting on page 30, in which we show how five popular hues can be as expressive in home decor as they are on the fashion runway. and we visit a beautiful Ridgewood home on page 44. there’s more in this issue, of course. in honor of breast cancer awareness month, we explore the benefits of 3-D mammograms (page 21) and check in with local specialists for the latest on the bRCa genes that increase cancer risk (page 26). and on page 84—on the lighter side of health news—we’ve got something we always enjoy sharing: good news about chocolate! here’s hoping this is your best October yet. enjoy!

Hope & Help for Low Back and Leg Pain Sufferers The Back Pain Center Same Day Relief Care If you’re suffering from back pain, don’t despair. Dr. Alfred Gigante, a Chiropractic Physician, has dedicated the last 25 years to specializing in the treatment of low back pain and low back related leg pain, commonly known as sciatica. With today’s new non-force techniques, many of which were developed by Dr. Gigante, along with laser, spinal decompression, ultrasound, and electro therapies, he states, “the probability of relief is better than ever for all back patients even those considering surgery”. Dr. Gigante, who has lectured internationally on spinal care adds, “our goal is simple, to get patients out of pain as quickly as possible”. “In fact, eight out of ten of all our new patients experience a significant improvement after their very first visit.” If you are suffering from low back pain and/or sciatica, give The Back Pain Center a call. If you are not sure if your problem requires chiropractic, physical therapy, medications or even possibly surgery, then call and ask for a no-charge consultation with Dr. Gigante. Together you can determine the right course of action for your condition. The Back Pain Center was founded by Dr. Gigante in 1995, as the first team of Chiropractors, Physical Therapists and Pain Management Doctors, to dedicate their skills specifically to the treatment of low back pain and low back related leg pain. The Back Pain Center works with most insurance companies.

In addition, fiberglass is designed to expand and contract at virtually the same rate as glass giving it the lowest seal failure rate of any window on the market. With a limited lifetime warranty, this window outperforms the big-name competition at a price that is better too. Renew your confidence in what a replacement window should be! www.MarvinWindowNj.com

BREAST IMAGING When it’s time for your annual mammogram, you may have a choice to make, depending on the imaging facility you frequent: 2-D or 3-D? Since the FDA approved three-dimensional mammography, or digital breast tomosynthesis, in 2011, hospitals and radiology centers in Bergen County have invested in the groundbreaking, potentially lifesaving technology. Unlike conventional 2-D mammography, which produces a single fattened image of the breast, tomosynthesis takes multiple images from multiple angles within seconds. These one-millimeter “slices” are then combined to create a 3-D rendering of the entire breast. The result? “We’re seeing increased detection of breast cancer,” says Jaclyn Calem-Grunat, M.D., director of breast imaging at The Valley Hospital Breast Center in Ridgewood. “Tomosynthesis makes it easier to see small, subtle, invasive cancers especially. It also eliminates a lot of problems with overlapping breast tissue and dense tissue masking other tissue. And architectural distortion, which has always been a very subtle sign of breast cancer, is much more readily apparent on 3-D.” (That’s distortion of the breast tissue with no defnite visible mass.) Unfortunately, not all insurance companies now cover the cost of 3-D mammography. “Some still view it as experimental,” says Dr. Calem-Grunat. “It takes time for everyone to get on board. But I believe it will be standard down the road.” (To read about the BRCA genes that increase one’s risk for breast cancer, see page 26.)
A COMEBACK FOR BEER HERE
When three-fourths of the states agreed on Prohibition in 1920, beer-loving New Jersey wasn’t among them—but the law applied here anyway. Hundreds of craft breweries closed, and beer making in the Garden State began a long decline. “For decades,” writes author and lifelong New Jerseyan Chris Morris, “not a single craft beer was brewed in New Jersey.” You can read that sad tale in Morris’ new book, North Jersey Beer: A Brewing History From Princeton to Sparta (American Palate, 2015). With 16 pages of color photos, his volume also touches on some of the colorful characters who didn’t let a mere law stop them from selling beer to quench Jerseyans’ thirst. For fans of craft brewing, the book has a happy ending. The industry began a resurgence in 1994, and today New Jersey boasts 40 craft brewers, writes Morris, “with half of them in the north. And it doesn’t appear that things will slow down anytime soon.”

A Perfect Fit with Customized Knee Replacement.
At 73 years young, Phyllis Teats is a grandma on the go. Whether hosting a poolside picnic or cheering at her grandson’s ball games, there’s not much that keeps her on the sidelines. Even with crippling pain from severe arthritis, Phyllis hobbled to activities with ice packs, creams, wraps and other remedies—until she realized that two bad knees had diminished her enjoyment of life. “My arthritis was so bad that my bones were rubbing together and I was in constant pain. I was walking like a soldier,” said Phyllis. “I could barely stand during the day or sleep at night, and began to fear that my legs would give out.” In May 2013, Phyllis consulted with board-certifed orthopaedic surgeon Robert A. Kayal, MD, FAAOS, who recommended customized knee replacement. Unlike traditional surgery, this cutting-edge procedure uses MRI imaging and computer software to generate a 3-D model of the joint. “Just as no two personalities are alike, knee joints are unique to each individual,” said Dr. Kayal. “With this revolutionary technique, Phyllis received two new and improved joints made especially for her.” Phyllis elected to have both knees replaced, and both procedures were highly successful. She can once again bend her knees without pain, and is noticing greater balance, stability and motion. With a spring in her step, Phyllis is anticipating this summer’s baseball games, barbecues and other family activities. “I’m improving every day, and life is even better than it was before,” she said.

GO CLIMB A ROCK
Tucked away in an industrial park in Northvale is a brand-new venue where you can indeed go climb a rock. In fact, you can ascend 42 feet at High Exposure, a state-of-the-art climbing gym frequented by 5-year-olds, competitors from NBC’s American Ninja Warrior and just about everyone in between. On a recent Sunday afternoon, my children (ages 11 and 9) test-drove High Exposure. The plan was to spend an hour or so there, but they were having so much fun that we ended up closing the place down! They started out in the parkour room. (Parkour is a training discipline inspired by military obstaclecourse training.) It was set up with boxes, bars, ropes and all sorts of other equipment designed to get you running, jumping, climbing, crawling, swinging, vaulting and (sigh) doing flips. Neither Zack nor Julia had ever done anything like this before, and it was great to see them go from cautious to confident in a matter of minutes thanks to the enthusiastic instructors. From there we moved into the enormous action/adventure area, where the kids successfully navigated about a dozen different and exciting climbing challenges. Among their favorites: scaling a 42-foot-high stack of cubes, climbing up to and then jumping off a 35-foot-high plank and negotiating a series of progressively taller columns and then leaping off the tallest. And we couldn’t leave without both children sitting on the toilet bowl (TP included) that was positioned at the top of one of the climbing challenges. The price for an afternoon of indoor entertainment, excitement and exercise: $25 per person. Owner Stephanie Shultz also offers a variety of classes for both kids and adults throughout the week. HAUNTED HOTEL Let’s pretend that on Halloween night 1941, three Hollywood movie executives scouting locations in Bergen County were brutally murdered at Hotel Fell in Allendale…and the killer was never found. That’s the back story for Haunted Hotel, an interactive play presented by the Park Players at the historic John Fell House on October 23, 24 and 30. The performance begins with a séance in the Gothic Revival barn to raise the dead and discover the identity of the killer. From there, the play proceeds to the interior of the house, where clues are revealed room by room—and audience members participate in the unfolding action. “John Fell House is the perfect backdrop for this type of event,” says Alexandra Nolan, managing director of Park Players and the Saddle River Youth Theatre. “When you’re in the house after dark, it’s really scary. I left a bag there once and had to go back to get it after everyone left—and I was not happy about it.” (The mansion dates back to 1760 and takes its name from its original owner, a member of the First Continental Congress.) Plan on spending 40 minutes at Haunted Hotel, including walking time to and from Archer United Methodist Church, where ticket holders gather. (John Fell House is just up the road from the church on Franklin Turnpike.) “Since it’s an interactive event, some [performances] will last longer than others,” notes Nolan. “We may have adults who really get into the action and drama, and then we may have a group of Girl Scouts who are so scared it’s hard to get them through the door.” Best bet if you’re a fraidy cat: Reserve the 6 p.m. time slot. know your
cancer risk
is screening for mutations in the brca gene right for you? when actress angelina jolie recently had preventive surgery to remove frst her breasts, then her ovaries because of her genetic risk for cancer, she explained that she’d lost her mother and a grandmother to ovarian cancer and an aunt to breast cancer. but some people wondered if she was being overzealous. no way, says cindy Parnes, m.d., F.a.c.o.g., medical director of the new jersey women’s wellness center in montvale. “she was being proactive, reducing her risk of developing a deadly disease by 90 percent.” jolie had tested positive for a cancer-related mutation in the BRCA1 gene—one of two genes, named for the abbreviation for breast cancer, that are associated with a sharply increased risk of breast or ovarian cancer, cancer of the fallopian tubes or a cancer of the abdomen called primary peritoneal cancer. Fortunately, her situation is a relatively rare one, as inherited mutations are thought to play a role in only about 5 to 10 percent of cancers. women with a family history of cancer should speak with their doctors to determine whether genetic counseling about possible BRCA or other blood testing is appropriate. (those of ashkenazi jewish extraction may have a higher risk than others.) generally, says sharyn n. lewin, m.d., medical director of the division of gynecologic oncology at holy name medical center in teaneck, women should undergo BRCA testing if they’ve had certain cancers themselves or if their families include anyone who’s had ovarian cancer; breast cancer before age 50; two breast cancers in the same person or the same side of the family; three or more members with breast, ovarian or pancreatic cancer; a male with breast cancer; or someone who’s tested positive for BRCA1 or BRCA2. Keep these four facts in mind:
types of cancer. others are more frequent screening and prophylactic surgery—such as jolie had.
3
there’s a new test to predict breast cancer risk. called breVagen, it uses a simple cheek swab sample to analyze seven genetic markers, known as single nucleotide polymorphisms, or snPs, that are associated with breast cancer. “it’s a good choice if you have a family history but your BRCA test was negative, or if your family history wasn’t quite grave enough to require BRCA testing,” says dr. Parnes. if this test is positive, a screening mri [magnetic resonance imaging] scan may be covered by insurance,” she adds.
4
Another genetic marker deserves equal billing. “the markers for lynch syndrome—an inherited disorder that increases the risk of many types of cancer in both men and women, including ovarian and uterine cancer—are just as common as the BRCA gene but are under-recognized,” dr. lewin says. —DAVID LEVINE
1
Not enough people get appropriate testing. all women who have had cancer of the ovaries or fallopian tubes or primary peritoneal cancer and many women who’ve had breast cancer should have BRCA testing, says dr. lewin, so the results can guide their future treatment and family members’ screening. “guidelines all support that, but less than 25 percent of patients nationally are actually counseled about it,” she says.
2
even if you test positive for a brcA mutation, you won’t necessarily get cancer. the national cancer institute says that by age 70 the disease affects an estimated 55 to 65 percent of women who inherit a BRCA1 gene mutation and about 45 percent of those with the BRCA2 mutation. but an elevated risk is worth knowing about so that you and your doctor can consider taking steps to protect you. one such step is chemoprevention, the use of medicines to prevent cells from developing into certain

What do you get When a french designer remodels an american dutch colonial? Quite simply, the perfect blend of traditional and modern.
Dutch REVIVAL
“It was important to retain the historic architecture of the home and keep the front of the house in alignment with the streetscape,” says interior designer Laurence Carr. “The home’s exterior originally had one gambrel, so we tried to incorporate the second gambrel during the expansion while also maintaining the brownstone front.” The custom mahogany front door is surrounded by antique glass, allowing natural light to filter into the foyer.
when InTerIor desIgner LaurenCe Carr and her husband Paul decided to add 1,000 square feet to their 1930s dutch colonial home in ridgewood, they had one goal in mind: to create a peaceful sanctuary where their family could reconnect in a calming environment. “we wanted to make the house more functional while modernizing the look and feel of the interior,” says Carr. “It had to be cozy, but it also had to have enough room for when our extended family come to visit. My husband is australian and I’m French, so when our relatives come to the states they tend to hang around for a while!” Carr also hoped to create a place where her three children would feel comfortable bringing their friends home. “It’s really impor tant for everyone to have their space,” she adds. First stop: the entrance hall. when it came to accessorizing the foyer (left), Carr chose the rectangular lines of a Chinese medicine cabinet—where the family stores everything from keys to jewelry to toys—as a contrast to the foyer’s original curved wall, staircase and handrail. “a stunning antique or piece of ar t [the paintings are by French artist Louise Franoux] can have a strong effect on a space that’s stripped of clutter, fabric or color,” says Carr. The dark chestnut-stained floor plays off the foyer’s pale blue walls. next stop: the kitchen, the command center of the house. “everything happens here— cooking, meals, parties,” notes Carr, “so it was impor tant to create a large, open space for all of these activities.” a champion of lightcolored kitchens, Carr chose to keep a monochromatic color palette: soft gray walls, ivory cabinets, sand-colored granite counter tops and a neutral-colored brick backsplash. There are French country counter stools along with

it was important to keep the music room uncluttered—along with the rest of the house—to create a sense of family calm.
Carr’s children play the piano, so it was important to her to create a dedicated music room in her expanded living space. Deep crown moulding and a modern version of a coffered ceiling (“I opted for three rectangular panels as opposed to traditional square blocks,” says Carr), along with deep blue walls and gold lighting pay homage to a 17th-century French interior. An ivory-colored sofa and armchair paired with a brightly colored Turkish kilim rug play off the room’s black piano. Neutral-colored nylon sunshades provide privacy while allowing natural light to filter in.

a loveseat in front of a gas fireplace and a table that seats six. To achieve a kitchen that’s light and airy, Carr created a bunch of skylights as well as 10 large windows that look out into the backyard. When it came to the master bath renovation, the homeowner wanted the look and feel of a modern spa. Large greenish/gray porcelain tiles on the walls and floor, vanities with curved faucets and frameless mirrors, and polished chrome faucets and light fixtures work together to create a calming environment. The window treatment’s geometric leafy design is her nod to the green outdoors. “My dream was to create a place where my family could connect, a respite from our frenetic lifestyle,” says Carr. “To accomplish that, it was important to maintain a minimalist and uncluttered style, fashioning an inviting space where friends and family could gather. I think we’ve done that plus a whole lot more.” There are plenty of places to sit and catch up in the kitchen (above), including French country counter stools that surround the center island. Carr wanted a clean, simple design in the master bath (right). “You won’t see any elaborate crown moulding in this room,” she says. “Just soft muted colors paired with sleek accessories.”

I take the time to educate my patients and the community about the importance of dental health. DR. DAYNA CASSANDRA owns a private comprehensive care dental practice which provides patients with a kind and comforting environment. When she was a young girl, her female dentist became her role model and Dr. Cassandra went on to graduate at the top of her class from the University of Maryland Dental School, studied under the expert clinicians at Beth Israel Medical Center and trained at the prestigious Pankey Institute. Dr. Cassandra’s training instilled in her a strong philosophy of excellence in dentistry, working in her patients’ best interests and never allowing her practice to fall victim to the impersonal and limited approach of larger volume-driven practices. Always staying ahead of the curve, Dr. Cassandra brings innovation and creativity to all aspects of dentistry, combining science and art using modern technology, new materials and techniques. As a woman in the lead, Dr. Cassandra approaches cosmetic and general dental care with a progressive, interdisciplinary approach. She screens for cancer and sof tissue diseases, sleep disorders, headaches and neck pain. Dr. Cassandra knows the importance of team care and she frequently works together with other physicians to address a patient’s overall health. Dr. Cassandra’s extensive and ongoing training puts her in a unique position to work with people in need through the Paramus Rotary Club’s Gif of Life program and the Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative. Today, she is a dedicated advocate of education and she is actively developing a program to bring awareness of the connection between dental health and overall systemic health to community programs and schools.

DIANE DUROCHER INTERIORS is an award-winning, full-service interior design firm that specializes in creating timeless interiors that encompass a wide spectrum of design aesthetics. Diane, the principal designer, founded her firm, Diane Durocher Interiors, in 1995. Her guiding philosophy is one that is refreshing, heartfelt and mindful. Diane believes that home is where our lives happen and where memories are made, and she considers it a privilege to design for each client with this in mind while treating each project with the respect and care it deserves. Diane has always been drawn to design. Growing up, she spent weekends browsing furniture showrooms and preferred House Beautiful and Metropolitan Home to the typical teen magazines. Diane soon came to realize that one’s surroundings exist not only as a lovely backdrop, but can positively infuence how our lives are lived and enjoyed. Diane is known for her keen eye for color, outstanding space planning skills, and her ability to design custom pieces that uniquely fit her clients’ needs. Prior to establishing her firm, Diane worked ten years with a general contractor. This experience taught her the importance of teamwork, scheduling, and deadlines. Today, her firm frequently works in conjunction with major New Jersey builders. From traditional to eclectic, Diane’s firm provides design solutions that garner high praise from her clients not only because of her creative abilities, but also for the utmost reverence she shows for the needs, desires and constraints of each client and their family.

why NoT sChedule A reNdezvous wiTh This sweeT, NuTriTious FruiT? As A kid, you mAy hAve rolled your eyes at a relative who called some dried fruit “nature’s candy.” But for the date—the fruit of a plant called the date palm, or Phoenix dactylifera—the phrase fts. it’s one of the few foods that can satisfy a sugar craving while delivering a host of health benefts. dried or fresh, this wrinkled brown fruit will never win a beauty prize, but as a sweet temptation you can guiltlessly give in to, it’s fawless.
um, important for blood-pressure control and kidney function. with upwards of 15 minerals and six vitamins, the date is a wellrounded food. its abundant fiber (more than half a gram per fruit) helps keep you regular, it contains fluorine that works against tooth decay, and a study at Jordan university of science and Technology even showed that date consumption during pregnancy may promote a more efficient labor.
Power uP
did you kNow?
Boasting a higher calorie count per weight than many other foods (about 80 calories to the ounce), dates are a convenient source of energy if you find yourself in need of a boost. And they have especially high levels of potassi-
dates are traditionally the first foods eaten after the day’s fast at sunset during the muslim holy month of ramadan; the prophet muhammad is said to have broken his fast
with three dates. in 2005, a 2,000-year-old date seed sprouted in israel after being uncovered in ruins; it’s now ready to pollinate other trees. Cultivation is going strong today; it’s estimated that more than 7 million tons of dates are harvested each year, with egypt, iran and saudi Arabia the world’s leading producers.
Buy/sTore/serve To select fresh dates, look for those with smooth, glossy skins and avoid the ones with white material on the skin—it’s just crystallized sugar that develops naturally, but it means fruits aren’t the freshest. Fresh dates can last in the fridge for up to a month. dried dates, on the other hand, can keep for several months in an airtight container. Nuts are a frequent protein-rich companion for dates; the fruit’s flavor pairs especially well with walnuts and almonds. But don’t be afraid to experiment! replace the pits with pieces of strong, soft cheese, wrap the entire date in a piece of cured meat, or chop dates up for a wonderful addition to baked goods. (Baklava, anyone?) if you enjoy the flavor, take some time to explore the wealth of traditional recipes and cuisines that use dates. —hArry dowdeN

WINE + SPIRITS
HIGH TEA HERE’S A CONCOCTION TO WARM YOUR HEART— AND MAYBE CURE WHAT AILS YOU. Fernet Branca, the Italian liqueur quaffed by Michael Caine in the 2012 movie The Dark Knight Rises, is said to be good for stomachaches. It’s made from a secret recipe with 27 herbs and other ingredients. But if you own some, you can combine it with English breakfast tea and honey, as they like to do in the Caribbean—and that recipe’s no secret! It’s happily shared by Warren Bobrow, creator of the Cocktail Whisperer blog, from his collection of “restorative” drinks, just in time for the coming autumn chill. (For more such recipes, see Bobrow's book Apothecary Cocktails.)
FERNET BRANCA WITH ENGLISH BREAKFAST TEA AND RAW HONEY Serves 2
INGREDIENTS
■ 3 oz. Fernet Branca ■ Pot of strong English breakfast tea (about 2 cups) ■ 2 Tbs. raw honey

EnchantmEnt bEckons at this hotEl in thE old south’s most picturEsquE city, a trEat for thE EyEs and thE spirit. by RITA guARnA charm. cheer. calories. a trip to historic charleston, the pedestrian-friendly city nestled between two rivers on south carolina’s coast, promises this trifecta, especially if you’ve picked a sure winner already by booking a room at the belmond charleston place. this is one seductive city, one where the past is everywhere present. in 1790 charleston was the infant nation’s fourth largest city—it’s the one that defied time and stayed fairly small. today horse-drawn carriages still loll along past pristine, pastel-painted antebellum mansions trimmed with lacy ironwork. that charleston’s architecture—colonial, Federal, georgian, italianate, Victorian—has survived the depredations of wars, hurricanes, fire and the earthquake of 1886 is a testament to the tough-as-nails heart within this proper belle of a town that oozes southern hospitality. do pull yourself away from the belmond charleston place to see the rest of the city—though we’re not saying that’s easy. the eight-story landmark hotel smack in the city’s historic district looks like a modern French chateau. it has 435 spacious, beautifully appointed rooms (many of which were recently renovated) and those facing south offer panoramic views of the city market. all rooms receive twice-daily housekeeping service. and service here is something the hotel has won awards for, so expect to feel like a lord or lady of the manor. indulge in a treatment in the amazing full-service spa, swim in the heated saltwater pool or sip a mint julep or a southern mule.
From top, the famous Pineapple Fountain is located in Charleston’s Water front Park; you can travel by horse-drawn carriage past historic homes.

Charleston is made for walking, and winter is not blustery here—daytime temperatures usually hover in the 60-degree range, so you can enjoy all the sights in comfort. Start your Sunday constitutional at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, where bronze bells ring at 9:40 sharp. Then meander through the residential streets—and into a daydream of what life was like before the War Between the States began right here in the harbor more than 154 years ago. There’s plenty to make you feel cozy. Visit during the holiday season and you can see one of the country’s most spectacular light shows—featuring more than 700 displays and 2 million lights—along a three-mile tour in James Island County Park from November 13, 2015 through January 3, 2016. Or stand beneath a 60-foot-tall tree in Marion Square, where lampposts are festooned in ribbons and wreaths. As befits a city that prides itself on gracious living, Charleston has an intense relationship with food. Gourmands abound, and you’ll overhear their broad, aristocratic vowels as they debate everything from the proper consistency of creamy grits to where to get the best fried chicken. Know that you will be engaging in acts of gluttony, feasting on the likes of chicken stew, pork hash, hush puppies, banana pudding and pecan pie. In a city of star chefs, Michelle Weaver of Belmond Charleston Place’s Charleston Grill serves up highbrow takes on Lowcountry fare. She mixes classics and nouvelle cooking, unifying them with intense flavors and producing such standouts as seared flounder with buttery grits and shrimp, sherry-country ham gravy and tomato-basil salad. Or you can give yourself over to the chef and enjoy the six-course tasting menu, where you’ll savor every last morsel. Save room for the strawberry rhubarb pie or the vanilla bean crème brûlée, then settle in for a nightcap while you listen to live jazz, performed every night of the week. By the end of your trip you’ll be well sated in mind and body and only too happy to comply with the refrain “Y’all come back now.” Hear, hear!

I ❤ CHOCOLATE
Folks who sipped a cacao-based drink daily for a week scored up to 32 percent better on tests revealing circulatory system function than abstainers did. A square of 70 percent dark chocolate will net 200 mg of the antioxidants, and that’s the recommended daily “dose.” —Journal of Hypertension
