SENIOR MATCH DAY PROGRAM

20th May 2017

One of my friends asked "Why do you pay so much money for your kids to do all their sports? Well I have a confession to make; I don't pay for my kids to do sports. Personally, I couldn't care less about what sport they do. So, if I am not paying for sports what am I paying for? -I pay for those moments when my kids become so tired they want to quit but don't. - I pay for those days when my kids come home from school and are "too tired" to go to their training but they go anyway. - I pay for my kids to learn to be disciplined, focused and dedicated. - I pay for my kids to learn to take care of their body and equipment. - I pay for my kids to learn to work with others and to be good team mates, gracious in defeat and humble in success. - I pay for my kids to learn to deal with disappointment, when they don't get that placing or title they'd hoped for, but still they go back week after week giving it their best shot. - I pay for my kids to learn to make and accomplish goals. - I pay for my kids to respect, not only themselves, but other athletes, officials and coaches. - I pay for my kids to learn that it takes hours and hours, years and years of hard work and practice to create a champion and that success does not happen overnight. - I pay for my kids to be proud of small achievements, and to work towards long term goals. - I pay for the opportunity my kids have and will have to make life-long friendships, create lifelong memories, to be as proud of their achievements as I am. - I pay so that my kids can be out on the field or in the gym instead of in front of a screen... ...I could go on but, to be short, I don't pay for sports; I pay for the opportunities that sports provides my kids with to develop attributes that will serve them well throughout their lives and give them the opportunity to bless the lives of others. From what I have seen so far I think it is a great investment! ~Unknown

WAIMAK UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB MEN’S CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIP LEAGUE V Parklands United Sports Club Saturday 20th May—2:30pm Kick Off—Parklands Reserve

Coaches Comment: Last week we went down 3-1 to University in an entertaining contest at Kendall. After a scoreless first half we conceded from the penalty spot. Hayden Sword equalised with a brilliant lob after spotting the opposing keeper off his line. We had an excellent period after that and only two excellent long range strikes from Varsity snatched the game away from us. This week we play Parklands at Parklands reserve. This is a fixture that we always look forward to and I’m sure they will be hurting form their first round loss to us. We will be looking to regain the form that has seen us unbeaten in the league since the third round and bring home another three points. We have a full squad to pick from with the return from injury of Matt Le Gros and some in form players in the reserve team pushing hard for first team places. WAIMAK UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE V

Coastal Spirit FC 20th May—Kick off 12:30pm—Cuthberts Green Coaches Comment:

Last week was a break from the league, with the girls competing in the NZF Women’s Knockout Cup against Coastal Spirit. Coastal started very well, with an energetic high press that caused our girls many problems as we were unable to break them down and that continued throughout the match, with the fulltime scoreline of 1-6 reflecting their dominance. The girls know that this was not our strongest performance, with too many individual and collective mistakes, but the squad have quickly regrouped and have responded excellently at training this week. We were all disappointed with our performance, after taking the game to Cashmere Technical the week before in our strongest performance of the year, so will be looking to bounce back this weekend. Again, we play Coastal this weekend in just our second game away from the Kendall Park turf this season. The girls know that they will come up against another strong performance from arguably the competitions strongest side. The competition for places within the squad is really beginning to develop well, with the same side not starting two weeks in a row yet this season – a fantastic ‘problem’ for Shane and myself to have! All the best to the girls on the pitch, looking to put together a performance for each other and themselves that we know they are capable of. Duncan Reed – WPL Assistant Coach “When people succeed, it is because of hard work. Luck has nothing to do with success.” – Diego Maradona
