Kokoda for the Kids The countdown is on, with only days left until the Renshis leave on their big Kokoda trek. They have been training hard in lead-up to their journey by running Jacob’s Ladder in Kings Park carrying 30kg back-pack’s . Channel 7 have supplied both Renshi Graham & Renshi Phil with a ‘helmet cam’ so they can document their adventure. We hope to have an adult film evening in August so everyone can watch their trek unfold. The countdown is also on for the fundraising, please support WAIMA on the Kokoda for Kids trek for the Starlight Foundation. Everyone can do

their bit, from donating goods and prizes to simply purchasing a raffle ticket. WAIMA raised a fantastic $479 from the raffle at the Honbu grading; both raffle winners were at the grading to support our WAIMA students, well done and congratulations. Once again a special thanks to Barb Whyte for climbing up and down the grandstand selling tickets.

Framecor have also offered a special 20% discount for any WAIMA member who wishes to frame memorabilia or special grading certificates. Contact: We also have a raffle running to win one year’s worth of training at WAIMA, please see reception for details.

A very special thank you to Don and Christina Wood from Framecor picture framers in Malaga, who so kindly donated five limited edition memorabilia pictures for auction.

Graduation Notification Changes Our longer term WAIMA members will be familiar with the Graduation Notification papers that were sent out each month as a member approaches a graduation from one belt colour to another. In order to do our bit for the environment and cut down on our paper usage, we will now be notifying students approaching graduation via email. This email will include information about graduation,

procedures and requirements. For parents of jr students it will also include a short questionnaire to give us some feedback on your child’s progress at home. It is important that we have your current email address and contact details. If you currently do not receive our newsletter via email, please contact reception or and bring us up to date. Hard copies of the paperwork will be available at reception should you require.

Muay Thai News Congratulations to Dina Sokol who won the WKA State title on the 16th of June. Dina fought a tough battle and managed to take the win on a point’s decision. This was Dina’s 10th consecutive win and we wish her all the best for the future.

GOING ON HOLIDAY? Don’t forget if you wish to place you membership fees on hold to give us plenty of notice. Contact Michelle Duffy,

Bully Busters Seminar Many of us have been bullied at some time, or at least witnessed others being bullied. Even now, with all the publicity about bulling and zero tolerance attitude of schools, many children who are bullied suffer in silence – in fact research suggests that 20% of targeted children say nothing. Maybe they are too ashamed, or more likely they feel too threatened by the bullies to tell anyone. These school holidays we are running a Bully Defence Program, this program is designed to develop verbal de-escalation

Congratulations to Gradees from Honbu Well done all our WAIMA gradees for your fantastic effort at the Honbu Grading in June. A special mention to Sensei Tom Roxburgh, for being awarded Gradee of the Day and achieving his adult 2nd Dan.

Courage: To face things knowing you are afraid. Courage is knowing you’re afraid, but not allowing the fear to stop you. No matter how challenging it may be, courage gives you the confidence to face it. For some, it may be going to the dentist or standing up in front of a group of people to give a speech. For others, it might be sleeping alone in their own room, or riding a roller coaster. Courage is also making the right choice even if you are criticised you for it.

Stranger Danger We have recently learned of a couple of worrying incidents in the local area, two men driving an old white commodore have approached children walking home trying to entice them into their car. As school holidays are approaching please remind your children about stranger danger. WAIMA kindly reminds parents to supervise their children while at the dojo. Children should not be playing in and around the car park or at the front of building.
