NEW MISSION STATEMENT At the National Leadership Conference that was held in Baltimore, Maryland, FBLA-PBL unveiled a newly updated mission statement! The new mission statement reads: “FBLA-PBL inspires and prepares students to become community-minded business leaders in a global society through relevant career preparation and leadership experiences.”

This new mission statement aligns more effectively with the broad goals and programs that FBLA-PBL focuses on, such as leadership and community development, academic success, and applicable business knowledge.

With it, community members and people outside of FBLA-PBL can now easily see what FBLA-PBL stands for.

IMPORTANT DATES As the school year is fully in swing, the Fall Leadership Conferences are right around the corner! The Fall Leadership Conferences, or FLC, is a place for members to: • Discover FBLA • Network with members • Listen to great keynote speakers and workshop presenters • Learn about leadership, job skills, and more Below are the dates for each region!

he National Leadership Conference of the 2017-2018 year in Baltimore was a raging success. We all explored the beautiful city of Baltimore complete with a stunning waterfront and its giant aquarium. The conference ran smoothly and was filled with great workshops and opportunities to meet amazing people from all around the Nation and some from foreign countries. There were over 200 members from Washington who participated and over 80 members who qualified for finals. Overall, we had many members receive an award of excellence. It was an amazing conference, and thank you for all who attended.

We hope to see you again next year.

TIPS ON PICKING EVENTS

F

BLA offers over 70 different competitive events that cover multiple career clusters and various types of events. To have the best experience you should choose the event best suited for you. The best way to do this is to first understand the types of events FBLA offers.

There are 5 main elements in each event: 1. Presentation 2. Roleplay 3. Speech 4. Project 5. Test Most events are a combination of these 5 elements. To make it easier to choose, events can be categorized by type and by career cluster.

There are 12 types of events: 1. Collaborative Objective Test & Team Performance (Role Play) 2. Interview 3. Objective Test & Role Play 4. Objective Tests 5. Prejudged Projects & Presentation

6. Prejudged Report 7. Prejudged Reports & Presentation 8. Presentation with Equipment 9. Presentation without Equipment 10. Production & Objective Test 11. Speech 12. Team Performance Next you must understand the various topics that FBLA events cover.

There are career clusters that each event can be categorized by: 1. Agriculture 2. Arts. A/V Technology & Communication 3. Business Management & Administration 4. Finance 5. Government & Public Administration 6. Human Services 7. Information Technology 8. Law & Public Safety 9. Marketing, Sales, & Service 10. S.T.E.M.

Keep in mind that some events overlap into multiple career clusters. When choosing an event ask yourself some questions, such as: 1. Am I comfortable speaking in front of a small audience?

2. Would I want to be a part of a team?

3. Am I in 9th or 10th Grade?

4. Do I use one or more pieces of software well?

bove all be willing to try new things and meet new people. Even if you are not completely comfortable speaking in front of an audience, try it out to break that barrier.

When choosing a team, find people that will compliment your skills, not just your best friend. A lot of national champions are a part of teams who did not even know each other prior to their FBLA event. No matter what event you choose, it will be an experience that will teach various skills that will benefit you greatly.

PROGRAM OF WORK Each year, the State Officer Team creates a Program of Work, or a POW, of what they want to accomplish for WA FBLA in their term. This year’s State Officer Team’s Program of Work focuses on four main goals for WA FBLA. • Chapter Guidance • Communication • Membership • Partnership Below is a quick overview of what these four categories are, and what they will accomplish over this year, and the years to come!

CHAPTER GUIDANCE

The Chapter Guidance committee is focusing on giving chapters, chapter officers, and chapter members easy access to FBLA-based guidance to enhance their FBLA experience. Some of the different tools that will be developed are: • A timeline with important regional, state, and national FBLA dates, and seasonal events • Weekly 60-second videos with Tips and Tricks to make the most out of FBLA Go to wafbla.org to find this helpful tool!

MEMBERSHIP

The greatest strength of any organization, such as FBLA-PBL, is its members! That’s what the Membership committee knows. The committee is focusing on increasing the number of active WA FBLA members by 10% across the state. Some ways this is being accomplished is through • Member of the Month award • State Officer Chapter Visits.

If there’s a member in your chapter who goes above and beyond to help your chapter, go to wafbla.org for more information and to nominate them.

Having a more personal, one-on-one experience can greatly improve a chapter’s year, and State Officer Chapter Visits are a great way to have that experience. Chapter can go online to the WA FBLA website and request a visit.

PARTNERSHIP

Future Business Leaders of America is more than just competing individually, or with a small team. It truly is about learning, growing, and exploring the world around. Competitive events are just the tip of the iceberg with FBLA, and the Partnership committee is changing that view. They are accomplishing many things, such as: • Coordinating the Sister Chapters program • Increasing the number of members doing BAAs and CSAs • Increasing the number of chapters involved in National programs • Increasing community involvement with businesses Chapters can go online to wafbla.org, or contact a state officer for more information on all these great adventures!

COMMUNICATION

The Communication committee impacts WA FBLA by continuing to give it a messenger. It is very helpful to stay up to date on new trends and dates through many different channels, such as: • WA FBLA Instagram • WA FBLA Twitter • WA FBLA Facebook • Seasonal Newsletters • Weekly Adviser Emails Also, the Communication committee is creating a new award, Chapter of the Month!
