2015 Annual Report

WELCOME

Welcome For 22 years the Washington Apple Education Foundation has existed as the charity of the tree fruit industry. Industry members have inspirationally led the foundation through board service, supported the work through volunteer efforts and ensured financial resources were present for the foundation to serve the charitable interests of the industry.

| 2015 Annual Report

Through this period the foundation has maintained its two primary tenants: improve lives through access to educational opportunities and reflect the tree fruit industry through its deeds and actions. Industry efforts have allowed hundreds of young people to gain access to college campuses and receive encouragement and support to achieve degree completion.

These young people are now making a

difference in their communities, families and the future. It is through involvement and giving that the industry directs the efforts of WAEF. On behalf of the hundreds of students benefiting from the work of WAEF, thank you! Rachel Sullivan, Chairman

Throughout the year students took part in WAEF sponsored networking and informational events designed to encourage degree completion and career preparation. Below are a few excerpts from students and volunteers about their experiences.

|

“ My favorite part was learning about how different companies support the agriculture industry, some that you may not even think about! “ - Madai Martinez “ Definitely Tree Top as I saw myself as a potential employee for a company I had not known of previously. “ - Vanessa Alvarez “ I liked the informal dialogs while moving from one visit to the other and during lunch time. Also the time it was given for us to ask questions. “ - Guadalupe Rangel

WAEF Career Tour in Wenatchee

“ My favorite part was visiting the different departments at Stemilt Growers. I have worked on the production line before, but had never even seen what the offices inside looked like! It was eye-opening to see that many of the people who are in that career didn't necessarily major in that. I was able to understand that there are many different paths that you can take with your career. I also learned how important it is to network. During lunch, we had a discussion about how employers don't always post job openings online, but offer them to people they know and are qualified. Of course, it is important to do good on an interview and application, but knowing someone that can help you get that job right out of college is important! “ - Natalia Esquivel following the WAEF Career Tour in Wenatchee

Students responding to the most beneficial aspect the WAEF Career Tour in Yakima

“ To see how everyone had a different path and how there were a lot of ups and downs, it wasn't a straight smooth path. As much as we have plans, they don't always happen they way we expect them too. “ - Yoselin Perez Roger Pepperl, Stemilt Growers marketing director, shares with WAEF students about careers in marketing

“ The exposure to true professionals who were at one time in our shoes. “ - John Haas

A special thank you to our volunteers that compiled nearly 200 care packages sent to students soon after the start of the fall term and then again right before spring finals!

Beyond the Scholarship

“ This year I had the opportunity to utilize my life experiences and contacts to mentor a WAEF student at a crossroads in his educational path. There is a lot of pressure on men and women in their late teens/early twenties to make smart decisions that will impact the rest of their lives. Through conversation, encouragement and favors from of a couple of colleagues, I was able to help him. Interacting with him has made a positive impact on me as well. WAEF is not just sending kids to college, it’s seeing through our investments. “

Students are invited to regional dinners soon after the start of the school year. Shown are Spokane Community College, Gonzaga and Eastern Washington University students in Cheney.

“ My scholarship through WAEF came through at a time my family really needed it and I’m happy I can be part of helping the next generation of kids on their journeys. ” - Amber (Thomason) Gunn, WAEF scholarship recipient, 2002

Ms. Sullivan began her involvement with WAEF serving on our scholarship selection committee. She had recently returned to her home community of Brewster and her family’s warehouse and orchard operation, Crane & Crane and Crane Family Farms. It took several “asks” before Rachel felt confident she could make the time commitment to fulfill the high expectations she established for herself as a member of the board of directors. She was elected in 2011 and began service as an officer in 2013. Rachel balances many roles. At home she’s the wife of Jack Sullivan and the mother of one-year-old Gregor. At work she is CEO of Crane & Crane with active roles in production, general administration and warehouse management. And at WAEF she leads the board of directors while still being an active volunteer on the scholarship and recourse development committees. With her busy schedule it’s a wonder why and how she makes the time for WAEF. “I believe the Washington Apple Education Foundation provides value to the industry by allowing industry members to honor family members, employees and the future by efficiently managing the scholarship program and making scholarships a practical option,” Rachel provided.

Kershaw Companies was selected as Group Volunteer of the Year. This year employees of Domex Superfresh Growers (subsidiary of Kershaw Companies) participated in all facets of WAEF. Members served on the scholarship selection committee, board of directors, student stewardship committee and scholarship luncheon committee. Additionally, company individuals utilized personal talents and experiences to add unique value to the WAEF student experience including taking headshots of WAEF students for each to use in developing their professional profiles, hosting the first WAEF Career Exploration Tour and creating and designing the theme and promotional materials for the annual Scholarship Celebration Luncheons held each summer.

Mallory Shindler, Prosser, Washington, was recognized as our Volunteer of the Year for the inspirational contributions she made to WAEF this year as an enthusiastic and caring volunteer. Mallory has been an active volunteer with WAEF for three years. She began with the foundation assisting with summer fundraising events. Her passion for the mission led her to dedicate additional time as a member of the scholarship selection committee and leader of her team from Rabo AgriFinance to raise money for scholarships through Team WAEF@Bloomsday. Mallory is employed by Rabo AgriFinance as a relationship support manager.
