WELCOME

Welcome $1 million in scholarships! What a fitting milestone for Washington’s world-class tree fruit industry! It should come as no surprise that members of the tree fruit industry are making significant impacts in our communities, as signaled by the awarding of over $1 million in scholarships in a single year. In

addition to generously supporting student access to higher education, the industry provided internships,

opened their doors to students for job shadows and encouraged employees to volunteer as mentors. In general, members of the industry demonstrated by their deeds a genuine support for and belief in the next generation. The WAEF board of directors continually assesses foundation operations and actions to ensure the tree fruit industry’s charity aligns with tree fruit industry values and mirrors the industry it serves in ingenuity, hard work and dedication to our mission. Thank you for allowing WAEF to be your charity of choice! Kailan Dunn, Chairman

Beyond the Scholarship Beyond the Scholarship | 2016 Annual Report 8

Throughout the year students took part in WAEF sponsored networking and informational events designed to encourage degree completion and career preparation. Below are a few excerpts from students and volunteers about their experiences.

Annual Career Tours

In December WAEF students participated in career tours held over the break in Wenatchee and Yakima. Career tours exposed students to oportunities in human resources, IT, research & development, finance, accounting, media, domestic and international marketing, sales, packaging, engineering and much, more more without ever leaving the tree fruit industry.

Students responding to the most beneficial aspect the tours: • Having the opportunity to talk to someone who is already working in the career I would like to in the future. • My favorite part was being able to see all of the jobs that it takes to get apples to grocery stores. Without this career tour I would have never been aware of it all. I will for sure appreciate my apples so much more. • The whole career tour was great but the fact that there is so much opportunity for a career within the tree fruit industry was eye opening. • My favorite part was the actual tour itself. I got to see different departments and how important each one is. The fruit industry is a ginormous puzzle and everyone plays a part.

CMI Orchards walked students through the process of developing a new product launch, including selecting packaging to fit consumer needs and wants

Students and volunteers participating in the Wenatchee Tour at McDougall & Sons

Care Packages

One of the largest undertakings coordinated throughout the year is the delivery of care packages to nearly 200 students in the fall and spring. Creative and generous volunteers custom craft each care package filled with encouragement and nourishment.

Campus and Holiday Dinners

WAEF stays connected! Each fall we host regional dinners around the state to introduce students to each other on campus so they can help support each other. Over the holiday break Christmas dinners are held in Wenatchee and Yakima to engage students with volunteers for discussion about career planning, summer jobs and overcoming obstacles. This year students competed in teams to learn more about dining etiquette.

Beyond the Scholarship

|

Kate Woods, vice-president of the Northwest Horticultural Council shared the following: “The level of engagement of the students was really impressive. It isn't easy to speak up in a group of your peers - let alone with those who offer the potential for employment - and their willingness to both ask questions and offer thoughtful insights showed a level of professionalism beyond their years.”

We also asked volunteer leaders of the career tours about their observations:

Scholarship Training Scholarship Training

The WAEF scholarship training curriculum was developed utilizing insights from our scholarship selection committee members. Through it, students learn how to research scholarships, successfully apply and stand out in the selection process. Scholarship training is offered to all of the high schools in fruit growing districts throughout central Washington. Additionally, workshops are offered on college campuses and to parents & students in participating warehouses.

Comments from Counselor Surveys

3 The students appreciated the combination of information presented by the guest speaker and video clips, along with the workbooks as a supplemental visual aid.

4 The workbooks are great filled with really good, easy to understand information. Once the

students realized the "bracelets" were flash drives they were thrilled since most of them did not own a USB drive.

5 Getting tips directly from someone who screens scholarship applications makes a difference; first-hand knowledge is valuable.

“WAEF does so much for students in need of financial aid help. I'm happy to contribute to such an amazing organization!” – Cristina Dickerson, 2011 Carroll College graduate 16

The Washington Apple Education Foundation is led by a volunteer board of directors. Kailan Dunn served as chairman of the board from May 2016 – April 2017. Kailan’s election as WAEF’s chairman marked an exciting milestone for the foundation; a former WAEF scholarship recipient now serving in the foundation’s top governance role. Kailan’s first official tie with WAEF began as a scholarship recipient in his senior year of high school. WAEF scholarships followed Kailan throughout his undergraduate years at Washington State University. It was during this time that Kailan took on additional roles with WAEF by volunteering at golf tournaments and attending foundation sponsored events. Following his graduation he began work with WAEF supporter Northwest Farm Credit Services and with employer support increased his volunteerism with the organization becoming one of our first alumni to join the scholarship selection committee. Kailan was elected to the board of directors in 2012. During his tenure Kailan Dunn presenting at the 2016 scholarship luncheon in Wenatchee with the board of directors he’s been a member of the strategic planning committee, investment committee, scholarship selection committee and helped to reestablish the resource development committee. He continues to serve with his current employer’s, HR Spinner Company, support. Kailan shared that giving back to the organization that believed in him matters: “It has been an honor to serve as the chairman this past year and to give back to the foundation that helped me get through college.” Kailan serves with eighteen other members of the WAEF board of directors, each contributing generous resources to ensure the foundation continues to move in the direction desired of the industry.

2016 Volunteer Group of the Year - AgroFresh Inc.

|

There are many reasons companies encourage their employees to volunteer in the community. Studies show it improves morale resulting in heightened performance in the workplace and reducing employee turnover, it opens promotional opportunities to new groups potentially increasing customer traffic and it enhances corporate image and reputation. Those are valuable strategic reasons to get involved. What we see at WAEF is that volunteers care about the industry, their communities and the future. In the case of this year’s Volunteer Group of the Year, we are so excited that members of AgroFresh Growers have chosen WAEF to support with their time and talents.

2016 Annual Report Emily Bautista-Herdt accepted the award on behalf of AgroFresh Inc.

18

AgroFresh volunteers La Verne Bergstrom (Wenatchee), Darrell Riddle (Yakima), Garret Babst (Wenatchee) and Emily Bautista-Herdt (Wenatchee) led the company’s involvement in 2016 with volunteer efforts including serving on the scholarship selection and farmworker education committees, assisting at the scholarship luncheons and golf tournaments, serving on the board of directors, posting training jobs for WAEF students, and coming together to raise funds from their coworkers to award their own AgroFresh employee funded scholarship award granted to a WAEF Wish List student.

2016 Alumni Volunteer of the Year - Vanessa Reyes-Romero A new award in 2016! Vanessa Reyes-Romero (Yakima) became a WAEF volunteer at her very first opportunity, the same year she became a WAEF scholarship recipient. Vanessa volunteered at the foundation’s golf tournament, one of the only activities at the time provided for volunteers. She continued each of the four years she received WAEF scholarships and has not missed a chance yet to participate in the annual golf tournament and help with the luncheons. Vanessa adds a spark to each of the WAEF events jumping in wherever she can make a difference. Since graduating as a WAEF student with her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, Vanessa has completed her master’s degree in criminal justice at Seattle University and is preparing for law school.

WAEF Volunteers and Leadership

Dee Schoenmakers (Wenatchee) began with WAEF while employed by the Washington State Horticultural Association and continued her involvement when she was hired by Van Well Nursery over ten years ago. For 15 years, Dee has been charged with handling registration transactions at the foundation’s Wenatchee and Yakima golf tournaments ensuring they are orderly and easy to account for. It’s been said that golfers lead us to believe they attend our annual fundraising golf tournaments to help the students go to college, but we hear they really come back each year for the homemade cookies and smiles from Dee! Dee also regularly helps at the scholarship luncheons as a seating host.
