Washington Apple Education Foundation

2017 Annual Report

Welcome Compassion… Ingenuity… Family… Hard work… Honesty… Respect… These are values of Washington’s tree fruit industry that are central to the work of its charity. In name and in practice, the Washington Apple Education Foundation is the charity of the tree fruit industry and we strive in all of our efforts to exceed the expectations of Washington’s world-class industry. While always mindful of the value of each dollar spent, we seek to mirror the industry in valuing effectiveness over efficiency. This is especially true in the Beyond the Scholarship activities that provide WAEF scholarship recipients with motivation to succeed in college and graduate career ready. Hundreds of volunteers willing to invest in the promise of each scholarship recipient join the hundreds of donors that make scholarships possible through generous giving. In 2017, 252 students received WAEF scholarships. 77% of these students are first in their families to attend college. The tree fruit industry should take pride in the $1 million it invests in scholarships annually to driven men and women raised in tree fruit industry families. Thank you for believing in the work of WAEF! James Foreman, Chairman

Beyond the Scholarship Throughout the year students took part in WAEF sponsored networking and informational events designed to encourage degree completion and career preparation. Annual Career Tours Over the holiday break WAEF students participated in career tours held in Brewster, Wenatchee and Yakima. Career tours exposed students to the vast employment opportunities within the tree fruit industry. Human resources, IT, finance, accounting, media, marketing, sales, packaging, research & development, and engineering were just some of the topics covered. Care Packages Filled with encouragement and nourishment, care packages are one of the ways that motivate students through the school year. Generous volunteers send packages to nearly all WAEF students, approximately 200 or more, in the fall and spring.

Regional & Holiday Dinners Staying connected to students throughout the year is one of the ways WAEF differs from other scholarship providers. Each fall we host regional dinners around the state to introduce students to each other and check in! Over the holiday break, dinners are held in Wenatchee and Yakima to engage students with volunteers, WAEF alumni and staff for discussions on career planning, summer jobs and overcoming obstacles. “One of my favorite parts was being introduced to the variety of careers that the fruit industry has that I had never thought of. It was an eye opener when I saw that drafting/mechanical engineers were in the tree fruit industry. Now I’m considering maybe staying near my community to work at my dream job.” - Student participant on the December career tour

Beyond the Scholarship Summer Workshops Annually WAEF students gather prior to the scholarship celebration luncheons to participate in career development, college success and life skills seminars. Seminar tracks by college grade level ensure relevant information reaches students. In 2017, nearly 200 students participated in the workshops in either Wenatchee or Yakima. For incoming freshmen, seminars included budgeting 101, understanding financial aid and a WAEF orientation for students and parents. Students entering their sophomore and junior years were invited to workshops on social media awareness, understanding credit and the value of internships & job shadows to career planning. For students who are with WAEF for their final year, they were offered workshops on professional social skills, negotiating for their first career job and understanding credit. Much of the seminar content is uniquely designed for WAEF scholarship recipients by knowledgeable industry and community members volunteering their time to assist WAEF students.

Scholarship Training

2017-2018 School Year

Throughout the year students took part in WAEF sponsored networking and informational events designed to encourage degree completion and career preparation. Below are a few excerpts from students and volunteers about their experiences.

The WAEF scholarship training curriculum was developed utilizing insights from our scholarship selection committee members. Each year, the training is updated with new information: students learn how to research scholarships, successfully apply and stand out in the selection process.

Scholarship training is offered to all high schools and technical schools in fruit growing districts throughout central Washington. Additionally, workshops are offered on college campuses and to parents and students in participating warehouses.

WAEF Volunteers and Leadership Over 200 Volunteers supported WAEF events, committees, board leadership, award announcements and more in 2017. Time, skilled efforts, and the generosity of these individuals all contributed to student success!

2017 WAEF Chairman James Foreman James Foreman is the 23rd chairman of the Washington Apple Education Foundation. His commitment and contributions join those that served in the impactful role before him to mold the Washington Apple Education Foundation and its work on behalf of the tree fruit industry. James and his family own Foreman Fruit Company. An apple, cherry and pear production company with a presence in multiple counties in Washington and Oregon. Additionally, he is involved in the production of grapes and winemaking. James was a captain in the US Army and served our country in Iraq before returning to the Wenatchee valley to participate in the growth of his family's company. In addition to his involvement with WAEF, James is currently a commissioner for the Washington Apple Commission. His education path took him from Wenatchee High School to Harvard where he obtained a bachelor's degree in economics. While serving in the military, James completed his master's degree in agriculture science at Washington State University. Prior to returning to Wenatchee, James finished a master's program at MIT in logistics and supply chain management. During his tenure as chairman, James helped lead the board through a full-day retreat focused on board governance. The outcome of the retreat was a stronger direction in what it means to serve as a board member of WAEF and articulation of the priorities WAEF has for members of the board of directors. Additionally, stronger structure was put in place to ensure effective leadership into the future.

16

James and his wife, Allison, have four children.

Volunteer Appreciation Awards 2017 Volunteer Group of the Year- Northwest Farm Credit Services Northwest Farm Credit Services was one of the original donors to the Washington Apple Education Foundation. NWFCS was a believer in the concept of WAEF well before the foundation established itself as an effective organization. Soon after, employees of the company began contributing time and talent to help the foundation discover and then fulfill its mission. We were pleased to honor this company and its dedicated staff as our Volunteer Group of the Year. In 2017 alone, individual employees of NWFCS participated with WAEF on the board of directors, in our scholarship selection committee, through student mentorship & stewardship and at fundraising events. Our thanks to Carl Sohn, Craig Shindler, Dany Cavadini, Dennis Bigness, Jeff Fagg, Jesika Harper, Ken Ballard, Riley Mengarelli and Tom Howard.

2017 Volunteer of the Year- Colleen Malmassari WAEF students get the benefit of hundreds of volunteers willing to dedicate time to help them plan for the future and succeed in college. Colleen Malmassari has been a WAEF volunteer for several years providing a unique perspective to students through her experiences as a recruiter for Moss Adams and human resources professional in the tree fruit industry. For the last two years, Colleen has participated in our annual summer workshops and in 2017 developed a new course for students to help them refine their professional social skills. The workshop she developed touched on social media usage, attire, email communications and much more. Additionally, Colleen was also involved in sending care packages to WAEF students while they are away at college.

2017 Alumni Volunteer of the Year- Ruth Velasco Ortiz Ruth received her first WAEF scholarship in 2010 while a senior at Brewster High School and continued to be awarded each of her undergraduate year. As a student she was engaged with WAEF participating as a volunteer in golf tournaments and other opportunities to meet and thank WAEF donors. After her graduation from the University of Washington in 2014, she asked to continue that involvement as an alumnus. She was one of the first to join our alumni association and volunteers on the scholarship selection committee and student stewardship committee. She continues to participate in the WAEF golf events and sends care packages to students. Ruth also attends various student events providing a role model and potential mentor for students.
