I am delighted to present our Fall 2015 Asian Art Auction. Bringing our auctions together is always a pleasure. We work carefully and thoughtfully to find the right balance of materials, always following our rigorous guidelines of quality and rarity. My trips to Taipei, New York, and across Canada from August to October resulted in an exciting variety of exceptional consignments. This fall we are pleased to offer over 330 lots from Vancouver, Montreal, Quebec City, New York, Taipei, and here at home in Toronto, covering Japanese, Korean, Himalayan, Southeast Asian, and of course, Chinese works of art. On Vancouver Island, I was privileged to accept for consignment a collection of fine porcelain. It was mainly acquired in Hong Kong and Beijing prior to 1940, and some is from respected Asian art dealers, including Orientique Hong Kong. This fall we are also delighted to introduce Waddington’s first Asian Art Reference Books section, which includes selected lots from the estate of Yukman Lai (1949-2013), a Chinese-Canadian artist, calligrapher and seal engraver. He was born in China and raised in Hong Kong, eventually immigrating to Vancouver in 1991 where he became a prominent educator and artist of ink paintings and calligraphy. He was passionate about fostering an integration of eastern and western cultures. His works have been collected by art galleries and museums in Canada, Hong Kong and mainland China, and his paintings and calligraphy were selected by Canada Post to be issued as stamps in 1999 and 2001. A small sampling of his comprehensive library is included in this sale, and more will be offered in the future. We are also thrilled to include another piece from the estate of Chen Zhaogong (19031996). You may recall the Qianlong blue and white Ming-style hu vase that we featured as our June 2014 catalogue cover, which realized an astounding 186,500 CAD. For this sale, we successfully secured another important porcelain piece from the Chen family: a blue and white bottle vase from the Guangxu period (lot 208). And in an astonishing and auspicious coincidence, our aforementioned clients from Vancouver Island consigned a matched mate! We are thrilled to offer these rare and exceptional pieces; and their cobalt blue certainly illuminates our porcelain section. The Japanese works section features a massive and fine painting painting of Mori Tetsuzan (1775-1841), which depicts the rare tiger theme of this 18th Century master. It was consigned to us by an important Dutch-Canadian family, with provenance from Christie’s Amsterdam, 1981. With such a variety of extraordinary works, the cover lot must stand out as an exceptional item to represent the entire auction. This fall we are proud to present a turquoise-ground shaped box with a Qianlong mark and of the period (Lot 157) as our catalogue cover. It is from a renowned French diplomatic family in Montreal, with distinguished provenance including C. T Loo and Maison des Bambous, Paris. The only comparable piece, which was possibly the other half of a pair, is now in the GuanFu Museum Beijing. It has been a privilege assembling this auction, and a true pleasure to work with numerous fine examples of Asian culture from our valued clients. Our heartfelt thanks to all our consignors, buyers and consultants for your continued support. — Chih-En Chen Specialist, Asian Art

Inuit Art

“Off the Wall” Art

Waddington’s is internationally recognized as one of the leading authorities in Inuit Art. No other auction house has been as intrinsically linked to the development of a market for this art form. From our first landmark auction of the William Eccles Collection in 1978, Waddington’s has offered thousands of works, set record prices, and expanded the market well beyond Canada’s borders.

Our Off The Wall auctions are a unique opportunity to offer accessible art. Drawing from our International, Inuit and Canadian Art divisions, Off The Wall features paintings, prints and sculpture in an online auction format.

Our legacy of successful Inuit Art auctions, our ability to achieve continually increasing values and our creation of an international market have been key factors in establishing Inuit Art as an integral part of the Canadian and international art scenes.

The monthly online auctions are always an eclectic selection of affordable works – a great way to learn, enjoy art and start building a collection. Working closely with all our other divisions, Off The Wall has developed a diverse and extensive network of clients.

Fine Wine & Spirits

Appraisals

Waddington’s is the only auction company to be able to provide fine wine and spirit auction services in Ontario. Awarded an exclusive contract under the authority of the LCBO in September 2015, Waddington’s presents its first auctions in the fall of 2015.

Waddington’s has been providing quality appraisal services for over 160 years. Our specialists are internationally recognized as experts in their fields. We create comprehensive written appraisals with objective, justified values that can be prepared to ISA and USPAP standards.

The popularity of collecting wine as an investment grows every year. Many wines offered at auction will appreciate in value, especially rare and acclaimed vintages, making auctions an excellent way to build a fine wine portfolio. Auctions provide an opportunity to buy wines that aren’t available through other channels and allow restaurants to build world-class wine lists. Waddington’s will conduct live and online auctions of fine wines and spirits providing client access to worldwide markets.

A Vibrant Age of Artistry and Innovation

Despite the relatively short production period of Iznik ceramics, their cultural significance, stunning beauty, and impact on the development of porcelain has endured throughout centuries. They are some of the most renowned aesthetic products of Ottoman culture, and their influence is evident across varied artistic mediums. From the 14th Century onward, there was a high demand for fine Chinese porcelain in the Middle East. It was pictured in the paintings of rulers as a symbol of status and of cultural sophistication. While there is much Islamic pottery predating that of Iznik, porcelain’s surge in popularity inspired progress and innovation in their techniques. While Iznik was once known to be a production center for rudimentary works, they developed a groundbreaking technique that established the city as a technical and artistic force. The discovery of underglaze painting meant that their ceramics were more resilient, and the vibrancy and detail of the works could be preserved for years to come. With this development, Iznik saw a marked increase in demand, and thus, fortune. They continued to innovate, and developed striking new glazes that have become hallmarks of their design. While Iznik’s artisans continued to use their renowned cobalt blue, they also developed a dramatic chrome-based black pigment, a translucent turquoise, a pale purple based on manganese – and their two crowning achievements: red and emerald green. With this rich variety of hues, Iznik artisans created striking designs on tiles, plates and ewers, often using nature as their muse. While some ceramics depict figures or boats, the majority of Iznik wares feature naturalistic motifs composed of saz leaves, honeysuckle, lotus palmettes, hyacinths, carnations and tulips, all depicted in a thoughtful balance and complimented by geometric borders. The production in Iznik flourished for a period, but due to a series of unfortunate events including fires in potters’ quarters and an endemic of malaria, their golden age was fleeting. Consequently, there is a scarcity of Iznik wares outside the collections of museums and galleries. The two lots we have offered are stunning examples of the fine artistry and technological advancements that Iznik artisans are renowned for. Each boasts an array of naturalistic blooms, all rendered in fine detail with the vibrant hues of red, emerald green, turquoise and cobalt blue that have endured centuries.

This extremely rare copperplate engraving is part of a set of sixteen that was commissioned in 1765 by Emperor Qianlong for his palace in Beijing. Entitled Les Conquêtes de L'Empereur de la Chine, the series served as a visual record of the emperor’s successful military campaigns throughout Central Asia that occurred from 1755 to 1759. This plate, number four in the series, depicts the victory of Khorgos in which the Chinese under Prince Cabdan-jab defeated Amursana. The engravings are based off master paintings completed by the Jesuit missionaries who were employed at the court, including Giuseppe Castiglione (Lang Shining 郎世寧), Jean-Denis Attiret (Wang Zhicheng 王致誠), Ignatius Sichelbarth (Ai Qimeng 艾啟蒙) and Jean-Damascene Sallusti (An Deyi 安德義). Small-scale versions of these paintings were transported from the court in China to Paris where the era’s most renowned engravers were working. The Emperor decreed that his pieces emulate the style of Augsburg engraver Georg Philip Rugendas the Elder (1666-1742), whose work he revered. Here, the paintings were transferred on to copperplates and printed under the supervision of Charles-Nicolas Cochin of the Academie Royal at the Court of Louis XVI. When a limited number of two hundred sets were completed, they were shipped back to Beijing in two batches – one in 1772 and the other in 1775. A small number were reserved for the French king, his ministers and court officials and precautions were taken to ensure none were left with the engravers or printers. A French version of the imperial edict concerning the commission is in the National Archives in Paris. The scarcity of these engravings has limited them to few exclusive collections. The Louvre holds a complete set of sixteen, and in 2009 they mounted the series as an exhibition with an accompanying lecture and publication entitled Les Batailles de L’Empereur de Chine. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts also holds a copy of La Victoire de Khorgos. The appearance of these engravings has been relatively rare on the market, with Christie’s New York selling a complete set in March 1997, and a partial set of fourteen in March 2000. A single engraving the fourth plate, La Victoire de Khorgos, was also sold at Bonhams San Francisco in 2007. This copy includes the full text of Emperor Qianlong’s poem in the upper right corner, which was written to commemorate his battles.

The Hundred Thousand Tantras – Buddhas in the Bingling Grottoes Situated approximately 35 kilometers west of Yongjing County in Lanzhou City sits the Bingling Thousand Buddha Caves, also known as the Bingling Grottoes. It is a renowned religious attraction, second in artistic value only to the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang. Bingling, meaning “hundred thousand Buddhas” in Tibetan, represents an image of Buddhism from different dynastic periods in China. Dating from about 420 AD to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the Bingling Grottoes feature statuaries and frescoes that were created throughout varying dynasties. This serves as a reflection of the developing cultures, changing clothing styles and differing physical features of their worshipped gods. The earliest carvings were created in the Northern Wei Dynasties (368-534) in natural caves at the top of the grotto site. With 196 niches, 694 stone statues, 82 clay sculptures and some 900 square meters of murals, Bingling Grottoes is of great historical and cultural value. Among the stone sculptures, the main characters are Sakyamuni, Guanyin, Amitayus Buddha and Maitreya Buddha.

Certificate of Authenticity Issued by Orientique, May 14, 1993

Buddha in Bingling Grottoes

The large Maitreya Buddha located at the base near the edge of the Yellow River was made during the Tang Dynasty (618-907; as shown in picture.) The style of this Maitreya Buddha is very unusual compared to other Tang Dynasty Buddhas, with double linecarved eyebrows, elongated eyes, a deep philtrum and flat lips. The current example in lot 108 is believed to be from the same period (or later) and by the same craftsmen due to the very similar stylistic features.

In Pursuit of Glaze – Turquoise Obsession and Emperor Qianlong Porcelain and its applied glazes have endured as a favourite artwork of Chinese emperors. It became a fundamental aspect of their character, expressing not only their general view of aesthetics, but also their political leanings or philosophical beliefs. As a result, workers of the imperial kilns constantly strived to innovate a variety of glazes and techniques. During the Qing Dynasty, the apex of innovation was reached, particularly under the reign of Emperor Qianlong. He was one of the few Emperors who gave direct commands to his imperial workshop regarding the design of porcelain. These edicts are contained in the Qing Court Imperial Workshop Diary, and demonstrate his careful attention to detail. When addressing an officer of the imperial kiln in his third year, Qianlong stated, “The claws of the dragon are slightly bigger than the original model. Leave the current example in court but make another one with improvement.” Because of this careful and exacting supervision, the porcelain fired during his reign possesses a unique and exquisite quality. This shaped box is a stunning example of the refinement and richness that was achieved by Emperor Qianlong’s kiln. Among the many glazes available, the low temperature-firing turquoise glaze is extremely special for emperors. Invented first by Emperor Yongzheng, it was one of his natural colour-imitating glazes, created to mimic turquoise stone. However, the colour control experimentation was perfected in the Qianlong period. It was used sparingly, and is mainly seen on small scale porcelain pieces such as scholar boxes, snuff bottles and teapots, which emperors traditionally kept in their studios. This elegant colour remained popular for generations during the Qing Dynasty. The current lot is extraordinary due to both its rarity and intricate design. The only identical turquoise-ground famille rose box is in the collection of the GuanFu Museum in Beijing, as seen in GuangXi Satellite’s popular television series ‘Collection of Ma Weidu’. This enamelling technique, particularly the use of gilt as an outline, is likely inspired by cloisonné enamel with a turquoise ground. The only other similar example was sold at Christie’s Hong Kong in 2013, with an identical box shape, but with a yellow-ground cover.

208 FINE BLUE AND WHITE BOTTLE VASE, GUANGXU SIXCHARACTER MARK IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE AND OF THE PERIOD (1875-1908) Painted in Ming style with simulated ‘heaping and piling’, decorated throughout with motif bands of varied widths, including a broad section over the globular body with a scrolling floral motif, bordered to the bottom by a band of petal lappets, and above by repeating pendant trefoils. A key-fret border encircles the base of the neck with upright leaves extending to a further band of trefoils, surmounted by a border of frothcapped waves beneath the rim, the slightly spreading foot encircled by a band of classic scrolling vines, height 15.6” — 39.5 cm. $20,000—30,000

Provenance: Property from the collection of Chen Zhaogong (1903-1996), Taipei. Acquired during the 1940’s and thence by decent to the current owner in Toronto. Chen Zhaogong was the owner and founder of the Xin Xie Ying Inc., a large bakery and candy factory located at 61 Nanjing West Road in Taipei. Specializing in Chinese cookies and sweets, the company employed over three hundred people whose jobs included operating the heavy machinery and hand-packing all the products. In 1937 the Japanese changed the company name to Xin Xie Rong Ltd. until its closure in 1957. Amongst other things, Chen Zhaogong was elected as Baozheng, the district chief of the Jiancheng area in Guanghua Village from 1942 until 1971, and the founder of the Taipei Bakery Association in 1949. Chen Zhaogong had many interests outside of managing the Xin Xie Rong factory. He was an amateur collector of Late Qing Dynasty and Republican Period antiques, with many pieces now dispersed to family members in Taipei, New York, and Toronto. From the same family collection, a Blue and White Ming-Style Hu Vase, Qianlong Mark and Period (1736-1795), was sold at Waddington’s, June 9, 2014, lot 187, for CAD 186,500 with buyer’s premium. Note: With carefully controlled bursts of ink resulting in small concentrated pools of paint, the “heaping and piling” method of decoration, as seen in this present example, purposefully recalls earlier 15th century techniques. Although potters had mastered the art of firing and painting underglaze cobalt blue by the 18th century, this stylistic reference, with its bold brushwork and sporadic bursts of ink, served as both a reminder and tribute to the highly prized and admired works of previous dynasties. An example with same size and design was sold at Christie’s London, November 6, 2012, lot 227; another pair sold recently at Christie’s New York, March 20, 2014, lot

About Tian Qing Li Yi

Each lot may be subject to an unpublished reserve which may be changed at any time by agreement between the auctioneer and the consignor. The auctioneer may bid, or direct an employee to bid, on behalf of the consignor as agreed between them.
